Fun Fact: When this scene was first shown the test-screening audiences hated it. Until the DeLorean showed up again and they all cheered. The reason they hated it was because they thought Einstein was just killed.
That's what I thought when I first saw the scene, until Doc mentions that Einstein and the car are intact.
Old audiences were just too naive, it's obvious there's going to be a catch on it.

I love the pure enthusiasm Christopher Lloyd portrayed playing Doc Brown. He has maxed out charisma stats.
He was born for that character similar to Arnold being the t-800 terminator, Harrison Ford being Indiana Jones, Richardo Montalban as Khan, etc.

This movie singlehandedly made the Delorean one of the most iconic cars of the 80s.

I actually remember hearing about the DL 2 yrs before the movie came out -- my 6th grade teacher told us about DeLorean himself and the gamble he took, losing a shitload of money, etc. When the car was first brought out of Doc's truck I muttered to myself "That's a DeLorean!"

This is the perfect “feel better” movie to me. I love this friggin film.

I love this trilogy too! I thought it's gonna be another time travelling movie, where things will get confusing, because it involves time travelling from one year to another. But no! I genuinely love this trilogy! And the songs! There's a Broadway musical too!
The ending is still kind of tragedy when you think about it. lol.

Both actors have incredible lines deliveries throughout - Michael J. Fox’s “are you telling me…you built a time machine…out of a delorean?” Still one of the best lines in movie history.
Fun fact, this was the first scene they shot with Michael J Fox after getting rid of Eric Stoltz...there was general nervousness in the air on whether or not this was still going to work, but when he gave the line about the DeLorean, it got the first on-set laugh that alleviated crew concerns.

I prefer: "When this baby hits 88 miles an hour.. you are going to see some serious shit." Closely followed by: "Roads? Where we are going... we don need roads" From BTF2. But this whole sequence is magnificent. It feels now in hindsight like history being made.
@@suzunakuraki3747 I don't think Stoltz was happy at all! They had filmed a good chunk of the movie with him and midway through he was let go of the production. It must've been incredibly hard for him to swallow that pill, since he was approaching the movie on a more tragic standpoint, because when Marty returns, the characteristics of his family has completely changed due to his actions in the past.
For those "worried" about anyone remaking these movies. Please note that both Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale already said No many times. Some actors have also agreed on that as well

What I love about Doc Brown is that he's actually a lot more grounded than people tend to think of him when they recall this movie. In fact he's essentially a pretty normal guy, he just gets very excited sometimes. That's a tough balance to strike, but the writers and actor pulled it off.

Back To The Future is my all-time favorite film. Nothing will ever beat it, because nothing CAN ever beat it. This film never gets old, even after watching it hundreds of times.

80s movies are the best. Why does only stuff that is "modern" has value? What kind of mentality is that? The charm of the stuff that was made in a particular era is the fact that it couldn't have been made anywhere else. The stuff that was made in the 80s is awesome and they're not doing anything like it today. Boring uninspired music and aesthetics and comic book adaptations (and I say this as a comic book fan) or ironically, rehashes of 80s stuff. I didn't live the 80s but there will never be another era like it.

Doc Brown starts off as the film’s hero in my opinion. He stole the plutonium from the terrorists to fuel the time machine and likely saved countless
lives by preventing them from making the bomb they were looking to have Doc build for them.

5:17 There is just something about the little nuances of how Michael J. Fox reacts to "plutonium" that only Michael J. Fox can do. Such a gifted actor, even today. He's got some screen time with Denis Leary in "Rescue Me" that hit me the same way. There will never be another like him.

Michael J. Fox has this uncanny ability to both sound like the smartest, wittiest guy in the room, and also switch gears to sound as smart as a door knob but also convey enough street smarts for a typical suburban white kid. Fox played intellectual smart ass and know it all Alex P. Keaton in his TV sitcom Family Ties, and then played several regular intellectually average Joe characters like Back to the Future or Teen Wolf. The charm probably lies in him never becoming too goofy, and making you feel like you the audience is in on the joke while the characters around him are oblivious. The only other actor that came close to being that way was another 80s teen star, Matthew Broderick, who was the only other actor I could have seen pull of Marty McFly if he was given the role. Broderick played a whiz kid in Wargames, and then switched to play a slacker cool kid in Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
He was in a Vietnam War movie. Casualties of War I think. Wasn't to bad actually.

When this scene was first seen by the test audience, the crowd was silent at first. Because they thought Doc had killed his dog. Then once the Delorean reappeared the audience went insane.

I love the energy wave that appears in front of the car. It's the first indicator the DeLorean is starting to tunnel through the time barrier.

This sequence is all pure magic. But i would like to give a small nod to the bit of subtle comedy on 0:24 as Marty cowards to the right, doc looks at him, looks at his feet. He comes back. It's hilarious on it's own and excellent bit of acting/directing.
Imagine if Doc miscalculated something and instead time-travel, the car just dunked them.
There's a whole theory around that. Doc spent his entire life working on this, even going as far as to steal radiation from terrorists. If it didn't work, he was going to be dead anyway, so he was going to kill himself, taking Marty with him.

I love the thermodynamics of the car. It put out so much heat in the jump that it had to become so cold to absorb it back whenever it arrives. Otherwise, the net energy of machine will be positive.

3:37 - Amazing how just the sounds of this scene spark emotion and nostalgia.....
So, something I just noticed about the special effects in this film, at 2:12, just as you hear the three blasts of the DeLorean. In full speed it looks like the car just appears with lightning around it, but if you slow it right down, you can see the car acctually appears 3 times in 3 different pieces before fully appearing, the bonnet, the mid section and the rear all appear seperately and slam into each other and they match the SFX of the lightning *perfectly*.
For late 80's special effects that is some incredible attention to detail, they could have easily just made it blurry or hard to see, but it's all there and it's awesome.
Watching at .25 speed helps.

@@StarWolf2199 how I live where the temps go between minus 40 up to plus 30 and never see my car go air cold from going fast down the road atleast the metal ones my i3 has go some ice build up at the side mirrors in front of them for some reason but it's a carbon fiber car to from a winter trip but I have never seen a car get completely frosted over from simply driving down the road and the engine bay shouldn't freeze since the heat coming off the engine would melt any ice buildup so how do you fix something that cannot happen is my question

As a kid, I loved this scene. As an adult, I still do but I wonder how in the hell Doc made a manual transmission car into a giant RC car which would logically require some automated process to work the clutch and gear shift, yet when the Delorean gets driven by Marty immediately after, he has to actually work the clutch and row the gears.
Dont you know Doc invented SMG transmission before BMW did.
Would of been a dual transmission with the ability to switch between manual and automatic.

In retrospective, Doc knew what to specifically say to Marty in order to prepare him to go back in time. He made him record everything, gave him all the info needed, how the car worked, what to say to his 1955 counterpart, how the pine mall looked in 1955. After all, he knew what was going to happen since 1955 and that the experiment would be a total success, at this point in life he already knew who Marty was for 30 years. He even knew Marty went to alternative 1985 and that they'd end up in 1885, assuming this is the main timeline.
It's an interesting analysis what you wrote, but I think that the Doc of this timeline didn't know what it is going to happen to him. I think that Marty change the future, probably he create a new alternative time line. What is interesting is that Marty recalls everything of his original past, but have to keep it in secret specially with his parents. Man! This movie is so great that make your heads hurts of its time travel theories. 😁
@@RealStevenStifler Agreed. It is 'stated' that a timeline ends/ cease to exist, when the person/object shifts to another timeline and that is also the start of the new timline and events occur altered who were influenced by Marty's arrival in 1955. All other events will not be altered.
The conflicting theory is that the Marty who is seen leaving by the end of the film is well aware of these events and the Doc knows Marty for 30 years.
And what about Marty's parents: They must having a shocking recognition by the time Marty grows up and looks like the Calvin Klein Lorraine met in 1955.
This is where the Theoretical Physics comes in with the plotholes/time paradox/ loopes.
As a Physics teacher this is sooo fascinating stuff for my students..

@@KTLam well the star trek philosophy is don't try to understand it. "Temporal Mechanics" is beyond us. The series has countless episodes on this topic. Including the series finale of TNG, where Q Compliments Picard on realizing the paradox, where picard's efforts to Avert the catastrophic spacetime anomaly were actually the very cause of the anomaly in the first place
According to Q, it was all just a test to see if humans could think outside the box, and accept that there are things about the universe that they might never understand. Picard passed.
Anyway Back to the future is a good movie. It's hard to make a time travel movie for the whole family, and not just sci fi nerds like me. (That's why the studio initially passed on the BTF screenplay). But Michael J fox and Lloyd are warm enough characters to suck everyone in. In other words, the movie transcends the genre, largely due to the acting of McFly, Doc, and Biff
They said one of the hardest parts of making this whole movie was getting the time on the clocks exactly right 3:10 haha

I saw in an interview that Christopher Lloyd was so nervous having to go back and reshoot all the "1985" scenes word for word, shot for shot after Stoltz got canned. If he was nervous it sure as heck did not show, he was so great in all of these scenes.

I haven’t seen this movie in awhile but the way Doc said he will look up Marty in the future warms my heart. Amidst of his revolutionary discovery he still thought about his friendship with Marty and had hope for him being big in the future.

It doesn't matter what they do or who they cast the first bttf trilogy is unique and can't be repeated. Michael J. Fox & Christopher Lloyd already earned their place in film history and our collective memory with those films. Now if I could just get Dr. Brown to drop me off at Time Square - NYC, on Dec. 31st 1969, at 11:55 PM, it would be awesome to watch the ball drop, and enjoy the 70s and 80s all over again, then as the new millenium approached, and having future knowledge, using whatever means necessary, to make damn sure neither 9-11 nor Covid 19 ever happened, would be a nice thing to do as well.
When Marty says “Look me up”, and Dr Brown responds instantly with a “indeed I will.” You can tell how much he’s been a part of Marty’s life, and is probably one of his only and best friend.
The sounds that car makes just before travelling through time is as iconic as the sound a lightsaber makes. IMO they are tied for best movie sound effect of all time.
That and the Ghostbusters lasers when they shot the ghost.
That beginning part makes me laugh every single time. Back to th Future theme song is my notifications on my cell phone. Never gets old, just gets better.

Back to the Future fans, let's all make a promise - let's protect this gem of a movie because it truly is the definition of a TIMELESS. Say NO to any modern remake that will try to earn money off of this masterpiece while making a cheap, empty copy of the original. Back to the Future requires NO remakes, there literally is nothing to be re-made. Studios, if you want to make money off the franchise, just re-release this in theaters and it will be a win-win for everyone. But PLEASE don't touch it. Let it be.
Classic scene from a classic movie. I know there are better other ways to travel through time as shown in other time-travel ventures, but I just love the DeLorean given it is just so cool to hit the gas pedal, get to 88, and instantaneously travel through time. It is a fun and exciting way to time-travel. Just love the BTTF trilogy. I hope Universal Studio will not ever touch this classic to reboot it in the future, even after Robert Zemeckis and Bob Gale are gone.

Saw it in the theater with my summer camp when I was nine the day it came out. So crowded. Remember being entranced for the whole movie, never saw anything like it. Good times.
I was already into the movie when the clip ended.
I adore this trilogy! I'm a huge fan; I can literally sit there and say every line along with all the actors of every single one. I've watched these movies so many times, and I never tire of them.
I’m going to sound unpopular. I like the sequels but they were good one and done. They don’t beat the original movie

There aren't many perfect movies out there but I have always thought Back To the Future was definitely perfect.

I was so excited when this movie was released in 1985. I thought the theaters were going to be packed plus I was eager to see it. I went to the early show..... I was the only person in the theater watching it. I couldnt believe I was the only person to show up. So I sat in the exact middle of the room! I love this movie.

Clearly, the best time machine created for a 1980s science fiction film.
Watching this clip of the first test of the time machine reminds me of the Back to the Future ride that used to be at Universal Studios in Hollywood, California and Orlando, Florida.
I wish the people who runs Universal Studios nowadays had still kept the ride around to this day, because it's those kind of theme park attractions that today's generations should be enjoying when they and their families go to Universal Studios.
They have absolutely no idea what they're missing out on.

question how come this is the only time jump that put ice on the Delorian during a time jump? every other jump even the one from this very parking lot does not leave the outside of the car iced up why is that?
@@raven4k998 The first time jump was wearing the time machine in. After this the components calibrated and don't waste the energy used to make the ice anymore and I completely made this up because I didn't know the answer and it pokes a hole in the story so I chose to ignore that because im a huge bttf mark.
@@raven4k998 Just watched it again and you're a liar! Lol. It does get icy at the end with the hobo on the bench. Can also see wetness in the barn but you're right there, hardly any ice buildup there

I could only imagine this getting rebooted like Ghostbusters (2016), change the cast into female and changed the Delorean into a prius.
If that ever happens I would be having nightmares.
Why would changing the cast into women in of itself be a nightmare? What hurt the Ghostbusters reboot was just not having a particularly interesting story. And really, no matter what they do with the gender or race of the cast, any Back to the Future reboot would be pointless and inferior.
Honestly adding women is whatever, but if they make everyone female then imma beat everyone up, and Prius is by no means "Stylish", they oughta do it with a new supra or that one DMC-12S that I heard rumours about
If that ever happens they should just destroy Hollywood and burn down all the studios. Because that's the end of life and the world.

Notice that he was wearing the radiation suit to remove the plutonium from the case and drop it into the DeLorean from it's little canister, but then when he puts the lid on and says it's safe because everything is lead lined he then removes his hood then he takes the empty one, OPENS THE CASE WHERE ALL THE OTHER PLUTONIUMS ARE WHILE NOT WEARING THE HOOD. With his foot mind you, all casual like he's picking up a sock that fell out of the laundry basket. OH BUT HE REMEMBERS TO GRAB HIS LUGGAGE THOUGH. Cause he's not, you know, completely batshlt insane.

In an alternate universe: the delorean doesn’t go back in time. Doc and marty both get hit at 88 mph. Doc dies from his injury’s and marty becomes paralyzed from the waist down.

Technically the delorean went FORWARD in time. The alternate universe is where Doc and Marty fail to get out of the way one minute later and dies. Biff finds the delorean.
There is a theory about Doc being suicidal from his failure of Inventing, therefore trying to kill himself, and Marty is forced to be a part of it.
We definitely do NOT need a Remake of this Movie it is Perfect just as it is! and it Stands up to the Test of Time
