  • This conversation took place on July 9; four days prior to the assassination attempt on Donald Trump that took place on July 13. We have a discussion on the wisdom and appropriateness of patriotism in the context of a church worship service. In light of the atrocity that happened over the weekend, I want to make it clear that we in no way think it is wrong to be patriotic or proud of the country we live in, despite it's many flaws. Any concern or criticism that was communicated was only directed at the blending of Christianity and patriotism.

What are your thoughts on singing patriotic songs in church??

Separation of church and state is there for a reason.
    No patriotic songs in church.

I appreciate your comment! On the flip side, would you say no prayer from a political platform also?
I’ve always taken sep of church and state to mean the government shouldn’t push a specific religion, but there is definitely wisdom in churches avoiding pushing a political agenda.

I think they need to stay separate, always. Otherwise, you see the mess we have today... politicians telling us how to pray, etc, and churches telling us how to vote.

I think they dont belong. I think its like.. to what end? What is the gain? Would mexican christian sing mexican anthem? And so on? Like whats the point of it? I think that just helps to create that us not them feeling. Just keep it seperate.

@@PanaMaJwaaRd I’ve thought that also. What if there were a visitor from another country, or an immigrant/refugee who has come to hear spiritual truths, and they hear songs about our country instead. It just doesn’t fit.

@@jonathankurz yea, the relevance meter is very low for that.
