    I'm convinced that being a presenter at donut requires some of the widest skillets of any profession. You have to be an engineer, mechanic, fun speaker, driver, and be able to convey some complex topics in an easy to understand way. Good job guys (and props to the guys behind the camera as well, we don't see you but we know you're there)

    As some people have already brought up, without training wheels, at speed, steering will actually tend to be opposite of what might be intuitive. This is because it will cause the bike to lean. At speed, most turning is done by leaning. If that dummy isn't held more firmly upright, it will turn the bike itself as it bounces around and ends up leaning to one side. Hope this helps. :)

    • @ironized
      @ironized Před rokem +8

      Their whole concept of steering is flawed. The handle bars need to “wobble” to keep the hike balanced. So both options inhibit the bikes natural stability, like a rider who holds the bars tight…

    • @wingding7955
      @wingding7955 Před rokem +4

      Another thing that blew my mind - especially since Jeremiah is the one who said it- was the weight of the dummy. Weight is 100% a factor in the amount of damage done/injury inflicted ESPECIALLY in a motorcycle accident. The fact that they ignored this blew my mind. I love this channel but this one was clearly flawed

    • @motosk8er2
      @motosk8er2 Před rokem +5

      Glad someone pointed it out. Lot of flaws in this one. On top of the whole counter steering thing, they used the totally wrong servo for this. No where near powerful enough to move the bars with a longer control arm (which is definitely needed). Also needs a servo saver to decouple the servo from the bars.

  • @gordogato1379
    @gordogato1379 Před rokem +166

    I think your steel cable solution for the steering was actually quite good. Instead of using a flat bar as a lever on the servo, you could use a single spool. Have the cable from the right handle wrap around counterclockwise, and the cable from the left wrap around clockwise. That way, you can have much sharper steering inputs that are much more linear. You could even add some pulleys in front of the spool to reduce the force of steering feedback.

      @paulnorris1 Před rokem +2

      Guys!
      You don't steer a bike with handlebars you also use your body. You'll never be able to turn any corners with the dummy because the dummy is not leaning into any of its turns. When you're turning the bike the dummies weight shifts to the other side of the bike making even harder to turn. You have to keep the training wheels on. Also replace them with something smaller and lighter.
      Jeremiah have a look into the physics of riding a bike.
      What you find is when you turn a bike to say the left you'll turn the bike ever so lightly to the right to shift your body weight to the left then turn left. It's a really small adjustment but makes all the difference.

      It's almost as if the bike would drive perfectly fine if a human being was on it, but they're going to crash it into the side of the vehicle so they need to come up with a way to accomplish these tasks with servos and cables.

      @ricardocruz4235 Před rokem

      @@flyingtentacle7631 You don't need a rider's shifting weight to control the lean. The lean should be completely controllable by countersteering.
      That is not to say this would be easy.
      First for hardware: the steering system would have to be extremely rigid and responsive to initiate a countersteer, yet still allow the handlebars to move freely the other 90% of the time to let the steering geometry control the wheel orientation. The system would have to be robust enough for quick and powerful steering inputs--enough to upset the bike's balance--but also able to be completely disengaged and nearly frictionless most of the time so as not to affect the bike's self-correction of balance.
      Even if that hardware makes steering possible, it would be extremely finnicky and damn near impossible to actually control without being on the bike, feeling its balance, or being able to shift our weight. Controlling countersteer would be impossible guesswork. Here is where the software side comes in: the countersteering routines could be automated.
      For example, say the operator gives a left turn input. The algorithm would flick the handlebars right with a magnitude and for a duration calculated based on the magnitude of the operator's left turn input. Then the steering system would disengage to allow the front wheel to reach the equilibrium angle in the turn. While mid-turn, the turn could be made sharper by steering the wheel momentarily to the outside (right) of the path of travel, or made shallower / cancelled by flicking the wheel to the inside (left) of the path of travel. Translating the controller's intuitive inputs into the correct countersteering operations would require calculations including some constants: the specific steering geometry and weight of the bike, and variables: the magnitude and direction of the steering input, a gyroscopic sensor to know the current lean angle of the bike, and a speedometer to account for the speed-dependent drag characteristics of the bike and the speed-dependent gyroscopic properties of the wheels.
      Clearly there's no small amount of hardware and software work required, but the fact is it should be possible and if it works, oh boy. I'll be so excited!

    Awesome video! Looks like loads of fun.
    Suggestion for the remote steering system: if you attach the rod closer to the center of the handlebar, you reduce your leverage but increase the amount of steering you can do. Same goes for increasing the length of the piece of metal attached to the servo.
    The training wheels you could make a bit wider to stabilize the weight of the dummy, and you can increase the maximum steering angle by angling the wheels up a bit more.
