On the topic of Sunny telling everyone what really happened with Mari's death, a lot of people think that he'd be.. Straight faced. As always. When not a minute ago he woke up crying. I can imagine sunny breaking down and crying as he tells them.

I honestly never "got mad" at Aubrey even after my first encounter with her in the real world; I'd say "grief" would better summarize my initial reaction. In the back of my head, I always knew there had to have been a bigger picture I wasn't seeing quite yet.
Nonetheless, getting to the point of finally understanding Aubrey was still a roller-coaster ride.

Same. Even without knowing about Aubrey's horrible home life and the scribbled photos, I still felt appalled with myself when I watched her fall to the ground after attacking her with a knife. Moreover, it was apparent by the time we got the church scene that she had suffered a LOT in the four years Sunny had been isolated. Kel taking as long as he did to pick up on her pain and reasonable feelings surrounding the situation was frankly more frustrating to watch than Aubrey bullying Basil. Especially after she made it clear that Basil had "wronged" her in the past somehow.

Each of the (alive) group represent a stage of grief.
Sunny - Denial, He has denied so much that he has denied his own life.
Aubrey - Anger, The way she acted slowly broke her and caused her to act as such she did.
Basil - Bargaining, Simular to sunny, he has denied some stuff, but its rather more to bargain about it, rather than denial.
Hero - Depression, He normally breaks simular to aubrey (however not in same fashion) when opposed to something about mari.
Kel - Acceptance, He is the only one who was able to get over the death of mari.

I think something very worthy of note about Aubrey’s character is the side quest with Kim and Vance’s dad who was not able to fix the leaky pipes for 3 consecutive days. From the very first time you meet him as Sunny and Kel, he’s the only person that you can’t truly “help” like you help the other people in the neighborhood. You’re just forced to sit and watch this adult man attempt to do an adult thing. You don’t really think much of it. After all, what are these kids supposed to do? You can’t truly expect them to know how to fix a leaky pipe can you? Even the older Hero, the problem fixer, can do nothing more than to stand watch as these pipes break again. When you go in with Aubrey however, not only is she the first person to offer to help, she successfully does it pretty much instantly. I think this speaks leagues of how much she was forced to grow up due to her situation at home. She doesn’t have the adults in her life that the other kids have. She doesn’t have the luxury of not having to worry about adult things like fixing a leaky pipe. Mari was the closest thing she had to that. With the loss of her friends, she truly had no one to rely on but herself. Not just for emotional support, but for merely surviving. She had to force that tough exterior just to stay alive. But we also all know that she’s really a softie inside. Kel outright says that. This is further encompassed by the fact that she helped this man without even knowing who he was at first. She had nothing to gain and still helped and is embarrassed upon receiving gratitude, shoving it aside like it was nothing. Though (but real) exterior, soft heart, and unwillingness to openly admit that she has a soft heart. The 3 core concepts of Aubrey’s character are shown really well in this seemingly insignificant side quest.

About the track "It Means Everything". Listen closely to the song: There's 2 tracks playing. I'll call the one that immediately starts with the main riff, "Track A". This is Aubrey's "FIGHT!!!" urges, her anger taking over, she wants to lash out at Kel and punish him. However, about 20 seconds in, "Track B" starts to play. It kinda sounds like a wailing in the background. I think this is Aubrey's pain, remorse, doubts if what she's doing is right, and perhaps fear of the future. She pulled a nail bat on Sunny and Kel in church. She knows she's not coming back to that church again, and she knows that whatever was left of her tattered past is done, finished (or so she thinks at this point). There's no coming back from this. And so, her subconscious is wailing in despair as all of this is just wrong. How did it end up like this? There's no turning back from this, is there? That, and on the Swingset 2 days later, she admits to Sunny that she still cared about him and noticed that he looked thin and pale, so I wouldn't be surprised if she were also in turmoil over both attacking Sunny and she was probably still reeling from the fact Sunny brandished (and, depending on the player's actions, slashed her with said knife) a knife at her. A freaking steak knife.
EDIT: Also, doing some more thinking, another explanation for the two tracks, Track B could also be Sunny's thoughts. Maybe somewhere in Sunny's subconscious, he's in despair over how Aubrey is so angry and swinging a bat at Kel and how their friendship deteriorated.

    • @Dhalin
      @Dhalin Před 3 lety +110

Also, about the Confession..... if you water the flowers properly, you see a small cutscene in which Sunny is standing at Basil's bedside. This could only happen _after_ the Confession. Sunny is standing there with a calm expression, and when Basil wakes up, Sunny _smiles_ at him and Basil smiles back. I like to ask people: Do you _really_ think that Sunny would be standing there calmly, and even smiling at Basil if his friends refused to forgive him? At the very least, the friends would be like "this really hurts... but hey I understand... I just need some time to process this, ok...?". But to outright refuse to forgive him... this would surely wreck Sunny and he would have surely just broken down at that point. He had just gone through a brutal mental battle with his subconscious (Omori) about this very thing... if he defeated Omori and then went on to confess to his friends and Omori turned out to be right, that should have wrecked Sunny. The fact he's standing there all calm and smiling tells me they did actually forgive him.

But I am of the opposite opinion with her taking long to forgive them. She might have ended up the same as Sunny had it all been a lot more unlucky and she was already having a bad reputation for being a bully who terrorizes her own community and that fate could have been Sunny's had the accident not be covered up. Call me a romantic but I think Aubrey had a thing for Sunny too. Before they head to the tree house IRL she tried to pull him aside to ask him if they could keep in touch after he moves. Yes, this could be just a friend thing but she didn't have to wait till the others left to do so. In contrast to Hero doing it out in the open explicitly as a friend thing. I do think her advances could've been a little imploded in DreamWorld but nonetheless that's what I think. We don't actually get a lot of IRL Aubrey like we do Kel so I just took her interactions with a grain of salt and common sense, and shipped them before I knew it.

I do get a small impression that Aubrey may have liked Sunny back, but I saw that dialogue before the treehouse as Aubrey's reluctance to be vulnerable in front of people. It's true that Hero is very explicit in front of everyone that he cares about people, but Aubrey's obviously a pretty outwardly tough person in the IRL segments who actively chooses to be cold and emotionally detached the majority of the time. She likely wouldn't feel super comfortable showing care for Sunny in front of everyone because it leaves her feeling emotionally open and vulnerable, I'm sure most people prefer to say sweet caring things when it's just you and the subject of your care. It also mirrors the little scene in the park on the last day, Sunny and Aubrey sit on the swings like they used to as kids with Hero and Kel off doing their own thing. Aubrey seems much more comfortable being open with Sunny, saying things that were a complete 180 from her antagonistic scathing words to Sunny a couple days prior in front of everyone.
I totally think your interpretation is valid don't get me wrong, I agree with your stance but I think it probably says more about her character and how she feels safe expressing her emotions. What points to her potentially liking Sunny in my interpretation is moreso that she shows individual care for Sunny in particular multiple times even after all these years, as well as some of what we see in Memory Lane.

And i honestly agree that Aubrey is a really well written character, she goes through her own arc that is very well made and really makes her feel like a proper central character, i believe the screen time and story Aubrey got is probably what Basil needed, something deep and impactful, i'm not saying Basil isn't impactful and isn't well written but i believe that, compared to Aubrey, Basil being treated as such a main subject in the story despite barely appearing makes it kinda underwhelming

Every time me and my friend would play OMORI together, we always ended up feeling so close to Aubrey's emotions and actions, to the point of making random unintelligible noises. We see her personality so insanely gorgeous due to her so many imperfections. She is insanely relatable, and you can never know how many real life people are somewhat sailing in her same situation. Despite her being so violent, once you manage to understand the reason, you can forgive them. And, when you manage to do that, the veil of anger gets removed, only to show such a loveable, and cute, forgotten girl. You really wish you would have the power to make change in someone's life like her.

What i love about her is that she isn't just violence after grief, ofc she were mad cause of all sudden Sunny and Kel came back to tell her she's doing wrong after being appart for 4 years, but she really cared about her new friends and tried to move on. And that's just my personnal opinion but i don't think the whole photo album thing was 4 years ago, if it was she would have already throws it. I think it was a bit before Sunny's appareance, like you said she was probably ashamed of what she became while visiting Mari's grave, so i think she tried to reconnect with someone of her group friend with who she has a strong connection, aka Basil. It was the last thing she could rely on but when she saw all the photos being blacked out she broke down and started bullying him.

My memory kinda sucks but I'm really sad that Aubrey thought Basil scribbled over the pictures with sharpie but it was actually Sunny who did that because he didn't want to get more trauma and remember Mari's death and what is worse is that Aubrey and Basil used to be friends and I'm pretty sure Basil first-ever friend was Aubrey and Aubrey first-ever friend which was Basil which even hurts even more but then after Mari's death cause big pain in the friend group Aubrey started getting really far away from Basil and caused them to not become friends anymore and instead made Aubrey bully Basil

Anyways, I have a piece of lore that hopefully could help with a Sunny/Mari video. During the Faraway town section of Two Days Left, if you go to the church while searching for Basil, you can talk to the priest who will mention something about their being a strong energy in the graveyard behind the church. Going back there, if I remember correctly, you'll find Mari's grave surrounded by a ring of light.

One thing I found cool about Aubrey is that she didn’t have the generic and cliché character development where “oh my god i was acting like a whole different person this is not who I am” then suddenly changes and denies her current friend group. Instead, she made things right with who she should’ve and continued her normal life with her friends.

To think of it , OMOCAT really loved and caried about Aubrey's character development more that any of the them , i dont think is just because he plays a big role in real world parts
Like c'mon , Kel just described entire Hero's coping process in one dialogue
And Kel's story is straight up "Just living my life, lol"
Off topic i really love how OMOCAT pulls the strings with Aubrey/Sunny dialoges , it seems Aubrey more that cares about Sunny , but why? Because of sympathy or because she tries to apologize for not understanding the whole situation with Sunny's copping stuff?
And it's some specilations that some of the words said in backstage scene was from friends(right after good memories highway)and it wasn't Sunny's imagination but some wishes while he was unconscious and Aubrey's one was most cheerful ...no, actually Kel was most cheerful..
But anyway OMOCAT is huge poo poo for doing that with my heart , i used all my savings too commision a few Sunburn arts and start drawing by myself . Like *really* , that game hits hard man!

I left a comment somwhere about Aubrey, Basil and about thier inteactions somwhere at a Omori related video and its EXACTLY all the stuff i went over, its nice to see somone else talk about how Basil was brought in by Aubrey, also i can't help but think that since Hero wasn't there to mediate between Aubrey and Kel that this is why thier connection was severed. Kel really tries his best to be happy, but i also think hes the least affected by Maris death. All the other charecters have a strong connection to her except him.
(I mean still a strong connection, but you know what i mean)
Oh and another thing, Aubreys parents didn't treat her very well and Basils parents were always out traveling and seem distant aswell. Maybe thats why Aubrey brought Basil in, she made friends with him becaus they both knew what it was like to have parents who were distant. Also Basil probably knew that Aubrey was an outsider in her school, so they both knew what it was like to be out of place. This must have made it that much more painfull for Basil when Aubrey started bullying him, he knew that she knew how hard it was to be alienated and yet he kept his ground not telling what had happend to Aubrey to protect Sunny even at his own expense (or i mean out of fear, you know the story).
Its interesting in the picture with Aubrey and Kim she has her hair coloured but not her eyes showing they have been friends for a long time, this can be seen in dreamworld aswell as Berly (Kim) interacts with Aubrey alot, probably showing that thier friendship went quite far back. The reason Kim is a dinosaur in dreamworld is becaus she likes dinosaurs which can be seen in her room. Also Kim is short for Kimberly, Kim + Berly = Kimberly.
I could go on and on about all the stuff ive found in this game its just so good, the years they spent on it truly shows in the little details.

It wouldn't really make sense, seeing as OMORI is basically the main puppet master of Headspace. And, aside from Basil and Mari, none of the other Headspace friends seem to have any autonomy. I may be a bit too late to the party to ask, but where does the game imply that Aubrey had a bad home life before Mari's death? As I remember, in the raincoat scene she mentions that she probably wouldn't be able to dye her hair since her father was strict about that. She says this after mentioning that they bought her a new raincoat, and on the day of the recital she went out to get her hair cut. Unless I'm missing some context, I figured her home life was at least decent before Mari's death where her father provided for her and kept some kind of order.
And side note; I also got the feeling that her squabbles with Kel were kind of exaggerated. You can see them dancing together when Mari and Sunny are playing the piano, and from the pink pinwheel dialogue it's hinted that Kel teased her because he thought she was cute.

The moment I saw that church fight, it clicked, she was amazing, the common case of "don't judge a book by its cover", no one likes to think they were the bad guy, for all she knew, everyone around her had hurt an innocent little girl and ruined her childhood, and that it was all their fault she turned out like that, that feeling of being misunderstood but not being given the chance to explain is a painful experience, especially when it's the people closest to her that think of her that way, it hurts to hear people talking about you in a way that you would talk about someone you resented because you know its all true, all those people at the church whispering things about her being irredeemable made her feel like she wasn't a person to any of them and that whatever she said would be disregarded as another excuse and that maybe she was just a horrible person to begin with and that people would be better off without her and vice versa, I hadn't finished the game yet, but all her interactions with sunny and Kel and the rest made me feel bad for her, her dialogue made me wanna go back and comfort her instead of taking basil to his house.

Aubrey is a very tragic character, her surrogate sister and potentially one of the only positive influences in her life dies, naturally she gets very emotional and starts lashing out, no one recognizes her lashing out as grief and merely writes her off as a good for nothing thug, including her own friends, which just forces her to take on the persona that everyone see's her as. It creates a vicious cycle where peoples perception of her shapes who she is, which in turn strengthens their beliefs about her.
Aubrey is ultimately a good girl who was immediately written off as a "lost cause" because no one could recognize she was hurting.

I think the most fascinating part of Aubrey is she's not introduced as this typical rude bully character. Because she was introduced as such a sweet, albeit sometimes fiery charicature, it makes her re-introduction pack such a devastating punch.
Headspace Aubrey may be flanderized to a degree, but the reveal is drastic all the same. Kel's reveal was bittersweet and hopeful, while Aubrey's was tragic. People talk about the themes of trauma and grief, but I think the growth of these characters is fascinating. What happened truly impacted them, and there's a sort of distance to them now. A heartwrenching tension, because they'll never really be the same as they once were.

Wanted to know what the game was about so I can build a connection to the piece (Or any piece in the ost) to learn it because Iike to do that when learning pieces. Saw some amazing videos like "The Psychology of Omori" and some others, then I started looking into the lore, yeah probably a bad idea because now:
    A. I just can't stop watching Omori videos
    B. The Ost just hits different now, and you can just feel the emotions in EVERY track
    C. The lore is amazingly built and goes WAY deeper than I expected and touches on very deep psychological issues and dealing with trauma. It's really good and shows how people deal with trauma differently.
Also, this game was made in 6 years and had a rewrite aswell?! That's mindblowing!

1:30 it's the reverse. Aubrey very clearly had feelings for Sunny but he never showed signs of reciprocation due to his shy and quiet nature

Really? I always thought in Headspace that Sunny was projecting his own feelings onto Aubrey so he could live out his own personal fantasy of having Aubrey fawn over him.
Also, during the Memory Lane sequence of the game, Basil says to Sunny "You always ask to look at my photo whenever I take any pictures of AUBREY. Do I... maybe... sense a little crush?" Followed by narration, "You feel your ears turning red..." hinting very obviously at Sunny having feelings for Aubrey.
Furthermore, in Black Space 2, the small scene where a group of Aubreys fight each other to be Sunny's girlfriend could represent Sunny's hidden desire for validation from Aubrey, and how he secretly enjoys the prospect of Aubrey fighting over him (Black Space is the realm of corrupted and repressed thoughts, after all).

By the way, after the good ending, you can get a secret cutscene,
if you watered basil's flowers in the dream world every day.
i found this out on accident on my omori playthrough!

I recently finished the true ending of Omori. I was pretty impressed with how much I liked Aubrey.
I think the moment I saw how she was acting, I knew what was up. Her old self still there, but buried under her new persona.
As a side thing, I like to assume she does know about Sunny's feelings towards her, but doesn't know how to respond to that. At least, not until she's matured into the 16 year old she now is.
But still unlike Mari and Hero, it's not as explicit.
