Did not know this pen even existed, thank you.
Great video. Amazing review. Well done!
Thanks so much!
Great info. I ordered yesterday a 3 pack of these in demo colors with a M nib. Looking forward to getting them Tuesday. 🙏✅👍😊. I have the EF and F in the X159 so I can interchange but I do prefer M generally if B isn’t available.
Thanks! I was impressed with the M nib I received.
I’m very happy with my Jinhao 9091. It’s a great pen for the money. Excellent video. I appreciate your effort. 👌👍
Thanks!
Great affordable pen, great nib and very large converter. Great review.
Thanks!
Nice review. I've got the black/gold version in M nib. Lookig to get the transparent in EF based on your review.
Good tip: I've started to fill all my converter pens with a syringe so the small neck size on the Diamine 30ml bottles is never a problem. Also, no issues with not drawing up enough ink.
That is a good tip! Actually that’s how I originally filled this pen, but I wanted to demonstrate the challenge during this video so people knew about it.
Very good review. I have the transparent version and like it quite a bit. I absolutely agree with your suggestion for a Japanese Eyedropper version. For this pen's shape and size, that would be the ultimate filling system.
Thanks!
@j.b.5291 you could barrel fill it using a liberal amount of silicone grease, but the metal finish on threads will eventually breakdown. But no simple way to add a shutoff valve that I know of.
Great pen, I love using it and I agree with the quality of the nib and the obvious upgrade to their QC.
About body-filling, I have not tried, but the issue here is not the metal threads of the body screw, but the thin plastic of the body, I'm certain my hand will heat up the air way too quickly and the pen will keep sneezing ink while writing.
As for the size, it's almost a perfect match to the Namiki Yukari Royal, the Emperor is way way thicker....
I haven’t seen the Yukari Royale before, but from googling it I have to agree. Thanks!
With regards to eyedropper filling, the finish on the threads will wear down over time if submerged in ink, and you are right about the pen likely burping from the heat in your hands. That’s why I suggested a Japanese eyedropper style, which uses a shutoff valve to help regulate ink flow.
I always like the cigar/torpedo shaped pens, already own two of these in black and deep blue solid versions... i have also ordered "Beena Antic" fountain pen as well recently for its great review and value for money...
They are an incredible value!
Thank you for this clear, helpful review. I have an EF clear demonstrator 9019 and I love it. So smooth and comfortable in my hand, with perfect ink flow with no tweaking needed. (You were right about the quality control nib inking by the manufacturer; when I did my usual pre-wash, a little blue ink came off.) I’ve loaded it with Platinum Carbon Black ink, something I would never do with a more expensive pen. I use this pen for both writing and drawing. I plan to get a couple more for other inks and nib sizes.
I LOVE the massively oversized new converter. It basically makes this pen a piston filler. (A CZcamsr measured the capacity by weight and it was about 1.3 ml, more than any other converter.) I disagree about preferring making it into an eyedropper-type filler. That much ink would be heavy and the ink might not be in good shape by the time it finally was mostly used. This huge, gorgeous converter, held securely in the pen and screwing into the section, is all I need. I look forward to seeing this newly designed converter introduced in future Jinhao pens. It’s a great answer to the universal wish for greater ink capacity. Also, an oversized converter should be easier to maintain than a piston-filler: just get another converter if issues arise.
I highly recommend this pen unless you have small hands. I didn’t expect it to be so comfortable but it’s been addictive. (My hands are not big in width but I have long fingers.)
I hope a compatible #8 EF flex nib becomes available. Wouldn’t that be fun?
Thank you, I’m glad you found it useful! I really appreciate the larger converter, but was a bit disappointed it isn’t easy to disassemble. I hope Jinhao continues to use them so they become more commonplace if you do need to get a new one. The eyedropper suggestion was something similar to the Opus 88, which still has a shutoff valve to control ink flow…But you have a good point, if you use ink with shimmer it may become very difficult to work with. Also I agree, a flex #8 would be quite something!
@@fortheloveofpens : I went back to the video where the ink volume of the converter was reported and found I had misremembered. It’s at least 1.6 ml!

Excellent review
Thank you!
It is a great pen but I had a problem with the nib and feed drying quickly. I think it may the ink but I am not sure.
I also like the lengthened turning knob on the converter. It fits into the end of the barrel which holds it in place. No rattling. This is a well thought out design. The quality is excellent.
Ink and paper can definitely make a difference. I would use an ink you are familiar with that has good flow on most pens. I’m also starting to plan a “nib tuning 101” to help troubleshoot issues.
Thanks again for your wonderful videos! I know these are good pens, but they are comically large pens. I can't see myself having one of these popping out of my shirt pocket 😂
People would be teasing me! Hi! I see that you're happy to see me lol
Thanks! I completely agree. For me this is more of a desk pen. I could also see people preferring these thick grips if they have arthritis.
X159 itself was a little too big for my hands, so I didn’t bother re-inking it..
But I’ll still buy this one - the gorgeous demonstrator model - just to add to my collection !
I did find the section on this one a bit more comfortable than the X159. Hope you have good luck with it!
Mine works great and doesn’t dry out with a few days no use. I love the ink capacity.
Great to hear, I’m impressed with the capacity too. Hopefully they’ll use this converter on future models 🤞🤞
I didn't see the square on the feed and collar. I did exchange nibs with the X159 as I was not happy with the original nib (needs smoothing). I wonder if that would affect the dryness.
In any case did you notice the X159 nibs are marked X159 on the bottom?
I did see that, and some people have 9019s with nibs that say X159. There’s a slight chance that not having the squares in line will prevent the nib and feed from being fully seated, which would reduce ink flow. I’m also planning a little “nib tuning 101” video to help people troubleshoot issues.
Where could I find a flex nib to fit this 9019? Thank you!
I am not aware of a flex nib offering as of yet.
This is my favorites pen. Its CHUNKY nd i LOVE IT. for referance ive got larger than average hands xxl-xxxl glove size so finding a pen that is affordable yet feels like a real useful item, instead of a like a toy ment for a child is nice.
Glad you like it! I’ve also heard the Majohn Q1 is a good pen for large hands. Haven’t personally tried one.
@@fortheloveofpens I'll check it out. If it's as well writing as the C1 it's gotta be good
Regarding the pen not writing well, I had the same problem. I realized that it was because the nib and feed were not aligned properly. I just removed the nib and feed unit, and aligned them. Once I did that, the pen wrote beautifully. Mine is the clear demonstrator and it is beautiful.
Glad you were able to fix it! Were they misaligned out of the box?
@@fortheloveofpens Yes. Very little ink flow. Out of the box, it was unusable. It was an easy fix, but I can see it would be frustrating for someone who was new to fountain pens.
@@janisstewart2217 i completely agree. I didn’t see this issue on any of the ones I bought, but I could see quality control being an issue (especially at this price)
Thank you your review and showing how to disassemble and reassemble the pen.
Clip is more similar to the Sailor pen.
Thanks! I haven’t noticed a sailor pen with this style clip, which model do you have in mind?
Sailor 1911, King of Pens, Professor for Profit seem to have the clip.
@@jerryw255 those are bent metal clips with some taper to them. Personally I see more resemblance to Pilot’s Custom series (74,742,743,823). These all have triangular clips with a ball tip.
Mine required quite a bit of fine tuning the nib and the feed. The nib is a stiff nail despite its larger #8 size. The plastic feels like... cheap plastic, unlike those better quality, thicker plastics with a tad of resilience and plasticity to prevent sudden cracking once you accidentaly drop it... but you get what you pay, so you have to manage the expectation here. Despite the cartridge being a screw type, with motion, it hits the barrel producing a rattling sound. As a writing experience, it takes a while to get used to it because of its larger girth, it feels like writing with a child's big, fat crayon.
I’m sorry you experienced so many issues with the nib. At this price, QC can certainly be a factor. I agree that it doesn’t feel extremely solid and the grip takes some getting used to. But I think a lot of this comes with the price and the oversized design.
Does Jinhao have any #8 nibs in piston fillers or vacuum fillers?
Not to my knowledge
@@fortheloveofpens I think they should
@@Overonator I agree!
My converter rattles when the body is securely fastened to the section. Such an annoyance.
Sorry to hear that, mine is pretty silent. You may want to consider putting some felt tape around the piston knob to help muffle it.
The clip in mine is so stiff that I'm afraid it breaks one of these days. Unusable. The tines in my unit needed some tuning for the nib to write properly. It also took me some time to make this beast not to hard start and to pass with flying colors the quick writing test.
Greetings from Europe.
Sorry our experiences were so different. Unfortunately Quality Control on such an inexpensive pen isn’t going to be bullet proof. Glad you were able to get it to write well, I’m planning a ‘nib tuning 101’ video to hopefully help others troubleshoot issues.
@@fortheloveofpens That would be great. Please do!!!
Some reviews have said that the clip is very stiff and that if you use it, you will cause cracks to form.
Mine is a little stiff but not overly so. I haven’t used the clip much because the pen is too thick to fit through the loop on my notebook. I haven’t noticed cracking either. I suppose if you are nervous about this you could try to loosen the bolt that holds it in place.
What is the point of reverse writing with a fountain pen ?
@@Ren-ITe you tend to get a thinner line which is useful if you need to write on low quality paper or are sketching/note-taking and need a thinner line. Personally I rarely do this.
I got mine today. It's just trash 😢. Maybe I got a faulty units. The ink flow is extremely low. It's M nib but still no wetness at all. I was really looking forward to this pen. Mine doesn't write even close to how your M nib wrote
I’m sorry to hear that! Quality Control at this price could be a factor. Have you tried carefully spreading the tines? Often that can be the fix.
@@fortheloveofpens It's working now😃. I completely disassembled it, cleaned it and carefully spread the tines. Now it's writing perfectly. Thank you for your suggestion❤️
@@Siam69 great to hear!
Why would you want to eyedropper a pen which holds a huge amount of ink like the big Daddyo does
I like cartridge converters but also like the option of holding a big ink supply in case I’m going on a trip and don’t want to bring ink bottles. If it was a Japanese eyedropper it would also not have the typical burping issues of most eye dropper pens, and could go on airplanes without issue.
While it has seen some minor enhancements, this pen remains quite feeble. If you find yourself without any other option, you might manage to use it for writing…
Did you find it developing cracks? Or are you just referring to the overall design?
@@fortheloveofpens
I got one two weeks ago, it had to be returned, because it couldn't write.... Ink flow was not sufficient... an absolutely disappointing experience. The improvements are OK, but the fountain pen should be able to write... You have to be lucky to get a copy that more or less works
@@michelgolabaigne595I'm sorry to hear that! Quality Control can certainly be an issue, especially at this price.
I would say that too…:)
Thanks for showing the hole at the bottom of the barrel...makes it ugly to me....most reviewers never mention this...and I would not have bought this...due to the hole in the barrel at the end.
Glad you found it useful! Just to be clear, it isn’t a pass through hole but a recess from the injunction molding gate. Other companies may polish this off in a secondary process, or conceal it better by gating near the threads. But I agree, it is a little unsightly.
It is a decent pen, nothing more nothing less. Tbh, I would suggest to save the money and buy a better pen.
I think it’s in the realm of the ultra affordable pens. Personally my favorite in this price range is the Jinhao 82 at the moment. But these don’t really compare because of size.
@@fortheloveofpens i prefer the hongdian black forest max or the majohn a1... Slightly more expensive but imho much better. I received the 9019 last week, but wont use it
@@karlgozo different use cases for me, but I prefer those as well.
