  • If you are into "girthier" pens, then you may want to look at the Jinhao 9019. I tend to enjoy oversized fountain pens and the latest Jinaho release is definitely that.

To unscrew the nib housing, you'll have to remove the converter first.
The cap only unscrews from inside if you remove the small brass screw from the bottom of the inner side of the cap.
Nice collection of big pens you got there by the way!

Thank you for this review! I find that a rigorous rinse and flush for all Jinhao pens does wonders. In fact, I do this with all my pens to keep them in good writing order. I have to admit, I now have all of the Jinhao 9019 colors including the just released turquoise one. I tend to favor fine nibs but I also have extra fine and medium nibs. It is nice that the9019 nibs are interchangeable with the later issue x159 nib units. Having an extra-large converter is a fantastic idea. All the benefits of a piston filler but easier to maintain.

Another great review and very accurate as well, Troy. Truly an excellent, unbiased review. Thanks Troy! You are a better man than I am, as my bias about Chinese pens is painfully obvious: I have had a several Jinhao's and have disposed of most of them in one way or another, and swore up and down I would never buy another one. But, after conversations with fellow fountain pen lovers, I decided to go ahead and pick up one of the new 9019's. I didn't really want it or need it, but wanted to be able to join in intelligent conversations about it. The one I bought was just like the "red" one in your video, except in an EF. The price was beyond unbelievable, and I think with shipping it was still around $14. In my opinion it is the best Jinhao yet and as you said, they really stepped up their game. I have nothing negative to say about the pen. It was great right out of the box. A comparable pen would run in the neighborhood of $150+ probably. A great pen. But I am ashamed that I own it, knowing how our Chinese friends across the water steal technology of many kinds from us and others. The way I see it, others have done the heavy lifting and have invested years of research and tons of money, just to have their products pilfered by the Chinese. All they have to do is research the market, take the measurements, replicate the the details, and create the tools necessary. And did I mention cheap labor? The word "espionage" comes to mind for some reason. Yep, a great pen and at a super unbelievable price. However, I don't keep it with my other pens. It deserves a place removed from the rest.

I have 3 9019s. I enjoy the girthiness of the pen. I have medium sized hands and have no problem with cramping. It is very comfortable to use.
You can remove the nib and feed and assembly. Be warned to remove the converter first.
I can exchange nibs with the X159. You may not be able to swap the shell. Some of the earlier versions of the X159 have a different threading. The newer models do not the same problem. I swapped nibs as I found the X159 nibs to wrote smoother. Did you know the nibs from the X159 have the model stamped onto the nib?
    Great overview.

Good review. I really like the x159 pens, but I like these 9019s even more. I bought all the colors plus several of the demonstrators (which, like you, I love). Also like you, I love big pens. My only disagreement is that I much prefer these posted, as I find the balance perfect when posted. At the risk of sounding like a heretic, I find these pens to write just as smoothly and enjoyably as my pair of MB 149s. Pretty amazing considering the price.

I purchased a bunch of these 9019s, because they are large pens. All demonstrators, they now join the Lamy Vista demonstrators in my visually boring "collection". These are so cheap at $11 AUD, that I can different colors of ink and each color will have its own pen. I took mine apart, unscrewing the nib housing from the section, to change the nib from a medium to fine.
The problem I have now, anything that is smaller than the 9019 is no longer acceptable.

They really did step up their game on this pen, especially the converter.

Standard international cartridges just push in. No need to screw in.
