Forged Down Under | Ep1 | Part 1 | BBQ | Battle of the Blacksmiths Australia

- "Forged Down Under" is filmed in Queensland, Australia, at the Savage Custom Creative workshop. Savage Custom Creative specializes in knife making and blacksmithing classes. Our goal is to get as many people interested in and participating in our hobby.
"Forged Down Under" was created to showcase the Australian talent we have in the knife making and blacksmithing community and hopefully get more people interested in our hobby! We also aim to make the industry more friendly, as we're all here to help each other.
Each episode is split into two videos - Part 1 & Part 2. Each episode has a theme and is made up of 3 rounds. Contestants receive a challenge that they must start in round 1 and finish in round 2. Each round is judged based on a rubric and the final score from both round 1 & 2 combined, will decide who moves on to round 3, where they will get a new and more advanced challenge. The winner of round 3 will become a "Forged Down Under" champion.
"Forged Down Under" is unique, as we only give the contestants a theme to follow, and the creativity of how they interpret the theme is wholly up to them. This creates a much more fluid and entertaining approach. Sometimes, giving fewer guidelines is better, as contestants have to battle the urge to overcomplicate the build in a time-constrained environment.
Our judging is also different. We judge the contestants on a rubric for Round 1, based on three categories, with a 1-5 points scale per category, per judge. Then, in Round 2, we judge them on a more complex rubric of five categories. This gives the contestants who think about their approach a more strategic path. If you're smart, you can guarantee high points in a couple of categories or maybe aim for an average across all categories.
We hope you enjoy our show, "Forged Down Under"!

I loved watching it with everyone made it all worth it
You guys need to be commended for this effort. Seriously professional production. Congratulations and good to see us aussies producing.
Thanks mate a lot of time and effort on everyone who was involved part
Love the format of the show and having a RUBRIC to allow the makers to shine on different aspects. All the contestants are an inspiration to this new maker. 🔥🇦🇺
It's much fairer on the contestants and allows for some strategy
hell yea cant wait to see more. "IT WILL OPEN A BEER" classic, ha ha.
It opened it very well.
Love seeing Aussie makers not just in the show but watching along too! Such great camaraderie. What an awesome bunch of people. Well done everyone involved! And all those people who are just starting out- welcome down the rabbit hole....
Oh yes our very addictive hobby
I am enjoying this a lot more than forged in fire. Liking how you interact with contestants
We're glad you liked it we wanted a relaxed atmosphere
@SavageCustomCreative that's what i like Is like a bunch of mates in the shop Is awesome
Been waiting for this since it was announced, thoroughly enjoyable. Loved the banter between the contestants and judges and just how involved Shane and Nick were with the contestants constantly giving feedback and checking how they were progressing throughout the competition. Eagerly awaiting part two.
I'm glad it was worth the wait =D
A truly authentic Aussie knife making show!!! The laughs being had and all the contestants and judges interactions came across as genuine and sincere!! So keen for the next episode 😁
Great work everyone. Loved the show and I am looking forward to the next episode
Forged In Fire got me into blacksmithing... It was fascinating. I can't wait to watch this and see more about the process.
I watched the shit out of it when I started as well
Absolutely brilliant how the whole show has been conducted. Love the layout of the show and how the judges interact.
Cannot wait to see the next one!
Part 2 is a real banger
After watching forged in fire and never seeing them properly temper a blade , I just saw them quenching. You brought me back to reality. well done. Such an important step!
We want to be more educational and still entertainment
Anticipation building 3 minutes to launch... Woot!
Excellent display of sportsmanship about the craft not the competition
That's what we wanted to focus on.
That was awesome. I really like the fact that the show is more focused on the actual work the smiths are doing instead of trying to make it overly dramatic like a lot of competition type shows do. Plus the fact that it's Australian is a bonus too. Well done guys
Exactly what we were going for show off the contestant work and get more people interested in the hobby
@@SavageCustomCreative Very good. I'd say you nailed it for sure. If I win a new grinder I think I'd become very interested in the hobby 😜
Thanks @Savage Custom Creative, this is a great "Forged in Fire" for us down under, great start looking forward to see were this goes!
Thanks, you will love the part 2 it's awesome what they do!
Really love the way the judges interact with the constants throughout the process. Great first episode can’t wait for more!
Thankyou =D
Like how the judges got involved even offering a bit of advice
We couldn't help ourselves haha
Bloody well done by everybody involved! Really enjoyed the banter between everybody :)
Thanks a ton!
Knew this was going to be awesome when I saw the forge. Great to see the work from our local well known smiths and shops. Well done guys. Epic!
Glad you enjoyed it 😁
Cool show guys. Well done. I was impressed by the talent and knowledge of the guys, both the contestants and the Judges.
Good to see knifemaking and bladesmithing gaining more popularity in Australia, and hopefully your show will help that more to. 👍 🙂👏
And for your shop too.
Fellow Queenslanders too?
Cool.
Might have to stop in for one of your courses or something sometime.
I'm based more North in central region but travel to the Brisbane are alot.
*THIS SHOW IS EPIC*
Raw, uncut, honest work. Brilliant.
Love all the interactive footage between judges and competitors, and thorts and processes that we all get to to see.
Cheers
really great show guys, loved watching everyone try and figure out the flame temper.
It's not a common technique to do these days
USA beginner bladesmith here to say I love the show guys, best thing since forged in fire! 🔥
Glad you enjoyed it!
My favourite part by far was the true blue Aussie attitude that the guys brought to the competition. I loved seeing how they were constantly giving each other advice and assistance. Just like the judges said it's what makes the Australian knife making community so great. As a new blacksmith it was amazing to watch these experienced guys work and forge, definitely seen some things I would love to implement in my own workshop. Overall a fantastic first episode and am so eager to watch the next one! Well done gentleman
Tell me about it they were a great group and loved to show the Aus spirit
Good to see some Aussies having a go
Hell yeah! So stoked to see this come to fruition, great work guys!
Much appreciated!
Congratulations on the show, guys. Finally, an Australian forging show. Here's to many, many more shows to come.
We hope to keep this show going
Loved the fact all contestants got to hand in a finished knife for testing. Actual information of what and why things are done is great for us beginners. True blue Aussie knife show complete with bottle opener.
We're going into more detail on processes on the next episodes as well
Well done guys. This format is great!!! Everyone got to show what they can do and how they work around problems as they arise. Good fair competition. I felt like I had almost as much fun watching as the smiths had working. Can’t wait to see the antics in the advanced round
Thanks so much!
Amazing! Loved the theme and the bottle opener. Hats off to all contestants to producing such great results in such a short amount of time.
Thank you so much 😀
Awesome work guys! Great workmanship from all of you 👏 Can't wait to see the next episode 😀
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love the fact that is all Aussie makers and that they’re offering each other advice and support. Loved the suggestion of adding a bottle opener when Steve was drifting the lanyard tube hole
They showed off the real aussie side of the community
Loved it so much went through google password recovery process just to be able to comment :) Well done all around to contestants judges and the production team. Looking forward to more.
Nice!!! Watching this now!!!
So excited to find something new to watch! This looks like it's going to be a great series. Good luck to all of the contestants!
Well done. A hell of a jump from making resin handles in your garage Shane. Great to see some Aussie makers in action
We've been very lucky with how we've gone
Awesome program! Congratts on a great produced show!
Thanks so much!
Well done guys on an Australian first.
I really liked the knowledge shared by the judges and their interaction with the contestants throughout the whole process.

Ep1 Part 1 was awesome and looking forward to the continuation in a few hours! Great to watch, enjoy and learn!
Unfortunately we've had to delay the next release for the 22nd due to editing issues =( much better to delay then rush them out half assed.
Congratulations on Ep1 Shane, Competitors and Savage Team. Really enjoyed the watch and looking forward to Ep2.
It was a team effort to get this all done
Can't wait for part 2! Bottle opener beer handles are the bomb!
22nd is our next release
Awesome 1st episode can't wait for more
Not long left before part 2 drops
I'm going to watch the heck outta this show when I get home!
Hope you enjoyed it =D
I've been waiting to see the Aussie version.
I watched it with a mate and his son , hopefully more prospective knife makers.
People that live in a place that constantly tries to kill you making things to kill back, I love it!
Keep up the great work!
Loved the show team - great to see that you care about the local industry and the knife makers community in Australia
Makers support makers is what it should be
Great first video, loved it! I appreciate the longer form (guessing it will be 1.5h total for Ep1) and you made good use of the time. I enjoyed the dialog between judges and contestants, and I also liked the details provided during scoring.
Thankyou, each part will be around 45-60 mins
Awsome work on the 1st episode looking forward to the rest.
Glad you enjoyed it
Absolutely brilliant production. Loved it. You guys really know how to showcase the talent in the Australian knife-making community.
Thank you very much!
I like this show more than forged in fire. Good interaction between contests and judges. Will subscribe.
Thankyou =D
Thank you gentlemen! Competition shows are very important for all professions!
Good work. Its great that you guys chat to the boys about their ideas and techniques throughout. Good luck with the success of this. Give the yanks show a run for their money
It's the teacher in us we cannot help ourselfs
What I like about this is that so much of blacksmithing/bladesmithing is personal preference. Where FIF was so set on the technical aspects, you guys are a little more forgiving because of that person preference aspect. And then during your filming you were getting more discussion with the smiths about what they were doing. Glad I found you.
Well done to all that put the show together. Going to be an enjoyable series to follow.
Also a bold move on the judging table. I dare say all those blades are sharp enough to create a memorable scene if they knock the edge of the glass. 😂
Keen for Episode 2!
haha thanks, the glass was a second hand purchase if it breaks we will get a new one, it's in a workshop after all I don't expect it to live long.
Well done everyone great watch
Great show! Loved the attitude they brought, the skill and the comradery. Not to mention, they were some mighty fine knives
Great show of the Australian spirit
Nick made my custom knife for me a while ago! Great to see him as a judge as he has a wealth of knowledge about blacksmithing and knife making.
Great Australian made show, throughly enjoyed it till the end! You guys knocked it out of the park and can’t wait to see more 🙌🍻
Nicks great
Loved it, great to see an Aussie show and some exposure for Aussie smiths. Good format and editing. Can't wait for the next episode
Much appreciated!
As a new blacksmith, shows like this are the best!!! Thank you for making this it helps me learn and grow!
Our pleasure!
I enjoyed that it wasn’t over produced and dramatised, good solid show where you can learn heaps and get some cool ideas. Will be following.
Thankyou we hope you enjoy the newer episodes as well
Very enjoyable to watch, looking foward to seeing the next show!👍😀
More to come!
Great work, love the aussie banter. Cant wait for part 2
Us Aus are great at the banter
Awesome first Ep. Loved the comradeship shown by all the smith's. Nice looking knives too
Couldn't of asked for a better first group
Love all the little tips and tricks. Can't wait for more!
Thanks
Whoohoo! Can't wait to see the guys smash it
"I chose this bit because it said made in Australia" hahaha love it 🫶
100%
It actually did too! ❤ 🇦🇺 All of my work is made with Aussie laminated steels either at home by myself and primarily Jezz at oblivion blades laminates 🤙
Can't wait!
Absolutely awesome work by everyone involved! Definitely can’t wait till the next episode.
Not that much longer before part 2
Nicely done guys, Love the points system for judging. Great production and editing quality.
It makes it anyones game and is a game changer
Awesomeness Shane.loved it keep em coming.
And @ Matt legend. 🤘❤️💯🍺 RTFO
Thanks mate
Awesome, well done to Shane and the rest of the team. Congrats to the contestants, you all done a great job with what you had.
Thanks mate glad you enjoyed it
Brilliant guys! Loving it so far. Great work setting all of this up. Cheers, Kris.
Thanks mate glad it's finally live
@@SavageCustomCreative I’ve been looking forward to it since you first posted up about it. Loving the interactive commentating. Great idea!
It was great to meet 2 of the judges when we did a 2 day course. Great instructors.
Awesome work from all. 4 awesome knives, amazing production, solid judging and just top content.
Glad you enjoyed it
I've been looking forward to this since it was first announced. The positive attitudes and helpfulness between contestants and judges is a breath of fresh air compared to some free to air TV channels where it is more about winning at all costs. Plus you cant go past anvil, forges, and knives with a BBQ theme!!!
Thanks for the feedback Tim, we hope to be picked up by a streaming service and still keep our style
Amazing show doing great things for Blacksmithing and Bladesmithing in Australia! Great work again thank you!
After finishing watching, id like to say that as someone only a few months into knifemaking, this was really cool to see. So far my experience with the Australian knife making community has been awesome and its really demonstrated in this also. Cracking jokes, helping others out, teaching and explaining and nobody seems to have a too big ego.
Keen for next episode, I just wish there could be some editing done to get a better look at the awesome creations when scoring them at the end. Good work all who are involved. 😁
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for the feedback!😁
Awesome work guys, loved how laid back it seemed with everyone having a laugh while working 👌
You will find at in a few days ')
Well done folks. Some lessons to learn, but I'm sure you're on top of them. On the plus side the skills of the smiths were able to shine and the judges made some good calls.
Everyone did an awesome job
Been looking forward to watching this, all the contestants were super down to earth, great to see a show featuring Aussie makers! 🔥
Glad you enjoyed it
Great job! Bring on the next one (or 20) 👍👍👍
We have 6 in the making =D
Only every seen maybe 2 forged in fire from america, but been seeing this mentioned on facebook a bit and had to watch, loved the comraderie between the contestants, and that rhe chalange/task wasnt wildly beyond tye ability most smiths
Great job guys
Yes Shane. So keen for this show.
Congratulations on the first show guys. 🥳
Love it. Looking forward to see more episodes.
Maybe organised sharp drill bits for the contestants? Lol😜
If it was me I would have sharpened it on the grinder =D
This is awsome!! Love it! Now another rabbit hole i can go down, great having inspiration and to see.local guys doing such an amazing job!
Love this guy's can't wait to see the rest and I'm doing another course
Oh nice, which class are you coming back for
Loved the first episode good mix of showmanship and information/tuition. Would be cool to see the points breakdown from each judge to see where they picked up or lost points in each category. Great effort Shane and the team.
Hopefully we fix a lot of this up for next episode
Just awesome. Love seeing it be more about the process and less about the show. Great contestants and definitely something to work towards!
Glad you enjoyed it!
What a great show! Really enjoyed it, start to finish. Looking forward to more episodes!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Loved it guys! Was great that we got to see more of the process with some explanation along with some banter.
I really liked how the scoring was done to, that there was points and an explanation on how that was decided from each of the judges, rather then nay or yea like some other show.....
Also that all the guys the got the chance to go through to the end of the comp rather then getting voted out.
Well done, and can't wait for the next one!
Awesome, thank you!
