Both sound great but I prefer Warren's because it takes advantage of the room sound. What would John Bonham’s drums be without the stairwell at Headley Grange, on Led Zeppelin, When the Levee Breaks? I LOVE when engineers take advantage of the environment they're recording in. It makes the performance special and showcases the signature sound of the studio. In other words, you can't get that exact sound anywhere else. AWESOME VIDEO!!! 🥁🎶🎹🎶🎸

As a drummer into my 51st year of playing, this was extremely enjoyable and educational. To cut to the chase, as presented, I would most certainly go with Nolly's approach and final sound. First of all, great drumming. That makes a huge difference. And the kit is well prepared for the session. Again, very important.
I always want my drums in the most wide-open space it can be. It would have been nice to just hear the drums, even with just a two-mic setup as to how it sounded naturally in the room. My guess would be that Nolly's location would afford a more expansive and dynamic location vs. being closer to the back wall approach used by Warren.
I am very impressed with the backwards approach of recording the kit from the batter side. His description of having basically three levels of sounds, each with specific characteristics, is brilliant. The snare drum, I haven't used a wood shell drum since I was in Jr. High in the mid 70's, exploded to life when those rear remote mics were engaged. While I would prefer the Black Beauty snare...what Nolly got out of a very high-quality snare drum is very nice.
It just feels more "alive" to my ears. And as a player, that is inspiring and will most certainly contribute to me wanting to deliver the best tracks I possibly could!

Wow! This was one of the best drum production videoa Ive ever seen. Its like technique, philosophy and idea overload! But in my humble opinion I think there isnt one that is better than the other. For what I like and am hearing they are both absolutely great drum recordings but they both belong to different genres. Which was totally expected to me. Warren captured an AMAZING pop rock/classic rock drum sound to where Nolly got an AMAZING modern rock/metal sound. Not that Warrens couldnt be used on a modern rock song. When I hear them back-to-back for some reason I picture Warren's as the Valhalla Vintage Verb 70's setting and Nolly's as the Modern setting. 😂 Thank you both so very much! You are both incredible.

Actually I think Warren's can easily be turned into a Foo Fighters type of sound. You'll need to do a bit of parallel compression to bring out the close mics and what not, but they already have so much personality that with fairly standard mixing techniques you can achieve a pretty unique drum sound. Nolly's sound more "balanced" overall, but also a bit boring maybe? You can do great work with both approaches regardless

We recorded at Electrical Audio w/ one of the house engineers and he used the E22s, surprisingly he also had them angled/not parallel. They were just perfect at mix time. Cad M179s and Audio Technica ATM450 are really good poor man's substitutes. The latter in particular because it's so small and side address. The bottom end is just huge on them too. I wish it had a little less output like the E22, but it does sound great, and I rarely have to do much to my toms in mixing. Switching to condensers on toms was a revelation for me.

Right of the bat you can clearly hear the difference engineering makes in a recording. With no mixing whatsoever Nolly's approach sounds punchy and modern while Warren sounds vibey an old school. Great video! I hope you do more of these!

I’m glad I watched this for several reasons. But firstly, Nolly mentioned (more than once) the importance of getting the record levels of each mic roughly the same. Which I would agree is an axiom of recording drums.
Especially if you like using the mic, it’s type and placement before ever touching an eq.

Funny how everyone is different. Two total different mixes by professionals, and yet I my ear would have shot for somewhere in the middle. Less room in Warren's mix and more high end in Nolly's is what my ear was thinking. Felt like my preference would have been a combo of the two

This video was great, it would be interesting to see how you both would make decisions recording drums in a smaller, less than ideal room and with perhaps either some cheaper equipment or even user suggested equipment to fit a budget (for example Nolly mentioning the Behringer B19a as a budget version of the 91a). I think it would be valuable for a lot of people to see how you would make decisions in a situation similar to theirs but with this videos level of depth :)

Regarding that tom mic thing: those mics have only 3 mV/Pa sensitivity + a trafo making the bleed/transients closer to dynamic with the flatness/bandwidth of a condenser.
You are free to look for a cheaper replacement with same features!
Lauten LS208 has 5mV/Pa and narrower polar pattern (but no trafo and more coloured freq response)

  • @SecretMetalFromAbyss

About panning drums I personally prefer drummer perspective because it's easier to airdrum the coolest grooves and fills and I kinda think that fills should go left to right like text. :D That left to right reasoning thing for me might be a little weird but for some reason I think that left to right feels more like going forward and right to left feels like backing up. :D
