Ravel's harp writing is absolutely incredible. I don't think many people realize how hard it is to write for harp.
Yeah... it requires a deep understanding of the mechanics as well as the player's capabilities. I'm amazed how versatile his harp writing is. He's able to bring the best out of the instrument and let it truly shine.
What Ravel does with the harp is only excelled by what he does with the flutes - sweeps us into delicious tranport
This has to be one of the best performances I've seen of this piece. Everyone's dynamics/tone/levels were SPOT on. Also this was mic'd and video-d extremely well too the harp sounded very full. Kudos to all involved!
sounds great, i just wish i could be there. i have to have my mouse on the volume slider to strike a balance between being able to hear the quiets at all (100% volume) and not waking the neighbors (10% volume on the slider)... it's a striking dynamic juxtaposition.
Ravel and Debussy, Debussy and Ravel. I go back and forth listening and can't tear myself away, looking for pieces and instrumental combinations not heard yet. Losing sleep, not wanting to miss anything.
Dude you gotta get into some messiaen, takemitsu and lili boulanger
this too is my existence hello kindred french impressionist spirit

No matter how much I've listened to this incredible piece, the last chord always surprises me ! To me it's like fairy dust to dazzle me and leave me speechless.
The final moments of this piece are just breathtaking. Some of the most beautiful music I think I've ever heard.
So wonderful, and so nice to have a male harpist!
With the right hair and clothing, he could be Harpo!
Haha, the first violinist near the end:
10:08 - "There's something wrong with this pizzicato... it isn't nearly loud enough."
10:13 - "Okay. I need to play a bit louder. It's still not enough though!"
10:19 - "THERE we go."
They all play too loud, as everyone does nowadays, no idea how to play Ravel, or with a harpist.
@@nonenoneonenonenone just out of curiosity, what IS your idea of the only correct way to play with Ravel or with a harpist?
The Harpist is magnificent! All the musicians are superb. The understand this music!
Merci !
This piece has so many ranges and themes, yet everything is in consensus with each other. No one does harmony quite like Ravel, maybe Debussy, but they're distinctly awesome in their own right.
Definitely one of my all time favorites. Thank you for such a great performance!
I hold the common, but controversial opinion that Ravel > Debussy...
of course, Ravel is better but this fucking world never understand the real genius@@jmack8767
Ravel = Genius
When I heard this recently, I easily dismissed it as typical early Ravellian fluff, where he aims to impress with sudden sixths, doubled melodies, pizzicatos, and modulations, generally a weaker Daphnis, but I keep coming back to it, over and over again. There is something really very special in this work. 8:59

What wonderful music and what a superb performance. Vive Ravel !!!
Simply breathtaking!!! The overwhelming beauty of Ravel's music takes your heart and caresses your soul
Absolutely!
Word!
This is one of my favorite pieces, played with incredible sound, dynamics, and articulation. You absolutely nailed it. Bravo!
Wow!! I’m a beginner harpist and I hope one day to play such a beautiful piece.....
Do not give up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is the purest definition of what the perfect interpretation/recording looks like. If only every piece has this quality of recording- it would be incredible.
Beautiful
Amazing! So much feeling. A vibrant performance. You guys rock!
Very nice. Very fluid and terrific coda. I used to play this with Martine Geliot in Paris.
I feel like I am in the fairy's forest or sth. I really love every instruments' sound in this work.
a beautiful performance...love the violinist's smile at 7:40.....sublime!
legendary piece from Ravel indeed
Bravo.... so well played!
+Ilze Robertson Thank you!
A radio announcer once said this piece was written to show off the new "double-action" harp, so that must mean the chromaticism demands a lot of the harp's pedals.
1st of all I make a scrunchy ugly face when the progression is so beyond truly beautiful. I've played this piece on repeat for an hour or more. I am having blissful memories of music school.
What a glorious sound! Thank you, all of you, for this wonderful performance. Yours in Gratitude
Thank you. Applause from the world

What a beatiful piece. Great artists. Wonderful performance
I have NEVER heard a better performance of this work!!!!.... Absolutely PERFECT!!! Emmanuel you are FABULOUS!!!!!.... and the players you have with you here are incredible!!! Bravo Bravo Bravo!!!!!
Simply a beautiful performance. A true understanding of the piece. Bravo! and so happy the recording is loud enough to hear the well crafted colors of Ravel from each instrument -- Other harpists hide in this piece. Just magnificent.
Magnifique!
Tbh the clarinet is the best part for me and it sounded so beautiful at the end.
this video should have more likes for this outstanding performance especially by the harpist who plays at perfect volume better than any harpist I've heard. the fact that this video only has 63,069 views and 788 likes shows that people don't know good music anymore.
Try the recording by Ed Druzinsky with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Jean Martinon. That's the best.
Adorei...
Stunning
I love the 1st violin face at 10:09
this is one of my Ravel's fave :D
Esquisida interpretació i genial Ceysson.
Emmanuel ceysson maravilloso bravo!

Awesome!!!
+PussyJazz Thank you!
Preciosa música, suena a España y a agua😮
I just heard this piece in a faculty recital at FSU two weeks ago. The harpist was unquestionably way superior to the man in this video. She made the piece one of the best live performances I have ever heard in my life. I am 80.
I didn't know Elton John played Cello...
He moves the harp around so much while hamming it up, you'd think they were playing Un Barque sur l'Ocean.
Oh, what a wonderful performance of Ravel's swoony piece! And to think that it was a commission to show how the Erard harp was versatile enough to not be superseded by a double stringed harp. Ravel delayed holidaying with his friends for a week while he worked on it - hard graft I imagine, BUT LISTEN TO THE RESULT!
Excellent historical note! And what a result Ravel produced!
Must have heard it over a hundred times over the decades. No surfeit here.
The cellist's shifty eyes at 8:27 are perfect.
and what about the fleeting head movement and glance of the cellist at 10:05? worth seeing it too!
Wow, wow, wow, wow!
Harp. Lover. !!!!!
wow!
The faces on that cellist.
What a stunning performance of this Ravel masterpiece. Fantastically vibrant and rock solid harp playing and a lovely sound from the violist and cellist. This is a very difficult piece to make it sound effortless and rhythmically focused,. This ensemble might well have produced the most engaging version available. Wonderful clip so thank you.
Why would you put the camera at the 1st violinist while the harpist is playing solo passages??
WOW
Beautiful performance... cellist looks a little like Mark Hammill!
1:14 A cello players dream
My favorite harp piece...does anybody know of anything as good or better?
Danses sacrée et profane by Claude Debussy is the closest in style to the Ravel. You may also enjoy Concertstück for Harp and Orchestra by Gabriel Pierné, Concertino for Harp and Strings by Jean-Michel Damase, and Concerto for Harp and Orchestra by Reinhold Glière

Very Nice !
Where can i fond the CD of this wonderfull performance ?
Thanks.
It's a pity, but we didn´t record the piece...bust we have a nice CD "Classica Francese" (Label Dabringhaus&Grimm) with music from France (classic and Chansons).
Excellent, excellent ensemble performance! Excellent technical video & sound.
Question to all: is this piece what is also called Ravel "septet"?
I think it was written for a nine-piece ensemble wich might be called a "nonnete". But I've heard it as harp and piano only, which was lovely
All I have to say is... EARCANDY
The figuring on the maple on that harp though...
💞🕊🎶‼️

+AJ yeah totally into it ;)
