Julia Lezhneva, soprano Helsinki Baroque Orchestra dir.
She has a surprisingly large and pure voice for someone who is physically so tiny. Clearly, her technique is superb and she also takes care to place emotional emphases at the right places in the text which many Baroque singers fail to do.

I love all the comments about how happy and effortless she makes it look... let me assure you, as someone who does this, she might or might not be loving every second, but she's a professional and working her butt off! She's not only a great singer, but a great actress. Even when the continuo crashes at 1:41 (I think somebody jumped ahead to the da capo) and she has to IMPROVISE and wait for the beat to find her again, she's right back on the horse in under 3 seconds as if it never happened - and until I looked at the score, I honestly had no idea. Also, I love the way she ornaments the da capo - enough to make it fresh but also stay within the style and not just show off. This is what an experienced professional looks and sounds like, folks. Exquisite!
What I love bout this singer is not ONLY her amazing timbre & technique, but her manifest enjoyment of what she's doing. So many singers furrow their brows & look agonized as they produce their finest notes & trills, but Julia's having a great time, enjoying every second of the music & of her own virtuosity. And the fun she's having spills over onto the accompanists---just watch the violinist at 3.06! The sound is divine, but just watching her brings a smile to my face. Thank you Julia.
@Janet Rizvi I’m no opera singer,in fact I’m not even a singer/in choir, but after reading your comment I’ve realised that she really is just having fun singing and that just brought a smile into my face. Thanks for pointing this out and making my day better :)
Astounding. She was 21 here? What a talent, and what a technician. She's a musician's musician. One of the most enjoyable parts of the video was seeing the musicians in the ensemble exchange looks of sheer delight and wonder-the little smiles that can't be hidden, the lively eye contact during pauses. It's exciting to be part of something like this: her singing is truly of the "I didn't think it possible" level. How lucky for those who were there to hear the performance live!
@@jeankim7758 I could listen to her all day! Wish she'd come to Madison, WI and I could see her in person--only if we don't have to wear masks. I think she sings as close to perfection as is possible on this earth.
Another reason for the conductor to be at a harpsichord is because of the layout of the keyboard part for the piece. Leading into the B section of the Aria, the main harpsichordist switches to the continuo organ, and someone must take over the harpsichord part whilst she switches. Baroque music is not just beautiful sounding, it’s beauty is in it mechanics of perfection and performance.
@@Paulsonof Keyboard is arguably a much better term, and people generally prefer it when talking about period music. And that is because they could have very well been sitting at a positive chest organ instead of an harspichord, or really whatever instrument available. Don’t go off and immediately compare it to the modern piano, that doesn’t really work well. Translating the harpsichord as the piano of our time is not very correct. Keyboard instruments were much more diverse than now, and people had also different ideas and such around them.
Encore merci Julia. ❤❤❤🎉🎉🎉.
Even though I get that this is extremely technical and difficult, there's this playful effortlessness about it which makes it just charming. I find that quite rare in classical music (but then I'm just a pleb).
You are perfectly right. If the 'experts' spent less time being pretentious, they would enjoy your freshness of perception. And if you listen enough, you'll be a genuine expert anyway!
I came here because of TwoSet. I've been a singer my whole life (not operatic, though!) and god, I wish I could sing like this....!!!! Definitely got a new favourite singer thanks to this!
I’ve been studying opera for 18 months and it’ll take me several more years to even get close to what she is doing if I’m lucky. My voice teacher is learning this song right now and it gave her a run for her money.
Her voice is out of this world, couldn’t believe such a big sound could come from a apparently small size person who was just 21years old during this recording. I also observed how the other musicians are enjoying her performance very much……..!!!
I was lucky enough to meet Julia in Vienna after a concert in which she was encored at least six times!! She is almost exactly my height (tiny!!) and incredibly sweet in person. It blew my mind hearing her live.
Everything about the comments here! I don't know if it was mentioned, but when your first violin shows such unbridled appreciation, it's not just another concert!
This girl stepped-out of a fresco somewhere in St. Petersburg; even her physical appearance, along with her voice, seem cut right out of the mid-1700s. The way she commands every note without belittling the accompaniment, and the way the latter doesn’t compete with her voice, is so cool to see on video. Thanks!
As well as admiring her skill I also find myself chuckling when I watch her-she seems to sing a passage of astonishing difficulty and then looks as if saying 'well, that was easy'. Even the violinists laugh admiringly.
I also feel happy looking at her face's happy expressions.. Listening to her voice was like listening to the birds of paradise's joyful tweets.. So rare..
This is actually the performance of Julia that I enjoy the most. Her voice control and her registre always amazed me. It is a real joy for the ear and soul.🇨🇷💖💞🌹
Thanks to twoset violin (or more specifically Sanna Iljin) for recommending this one. I just finished watching 29 videos of Julia Lezhneva. I've discovered a new favourite! Amazing.

sooo beautifully sung with crystal clear coloratura and graceful expressive phrasing but also can we appreciate the harpsichordist/conductor absolutely rocking out
Well, I was wondering how Miss Julia Lezhneva can be half way between a woman and a bird, a celestial one strolling high, so lightly on its wings up there. This all the way through this wonderful Haendel piece. It's amazing, since she's amazing ;-) !
So glad someone provided a reference to that part!! I've never heard anything like it. Also check out that little flicker of light in her eye after she turns her head at 1:26.........

I've listened to other versions and none compare. There is a connection to the music, lightness, easiness and joy she brings to it. She sounds like like she is playing an instrument not singing. Amazing
I was watching in awe.... like-literally! My mouth shaped in small "o" and when the video suddenly stopped because the wifi is fudging garbage!!!!!! Well, I had to set down my phone for a minute cuz I kinda broke one of our glasses while violently throwing my arms around in frustration.😅
Good Grief! I had this on background but her voice was so compelling I had to "investigate!" Julia Lezhneva is to Soprano as Cecilia Bartoli is to mezzo! What agility! Vocal acrobatics, so effortless and so charming...She is in love with music and transmits that love to us - and yes, as ebaytime expressed it, like a little uccelina! Thank God for all singers, but especially this great little one! Wow!
You're sold before she even sings a note. She looks at the audience and everything about her says 'you're going to enjoy this"and then she just soars. Benjamin Zander in his classes always has an uphill struggle to persuade young performers to connect with the audience and he should just show them this.

Well, she sure can trill!! I don't love everything about her sound, but my oh my can she deliver the Baroque style appropriately. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
She is really the thing that we call soprano it is. My Lord!
You know you're really good when them violinists smiles as you sing 👏💐 Bravo!
I think that if Handel was there... he'd be happy to hear his piece.
This is an incredibly difficult aria technically and this is one of the most brilliant performances I have seen. Bravo!
The male violinist at the back is so me HAHAHAHA but only his stare is so different while he steal a glance on Leshneva HAHAHAHA
OMG! Perfection and mega goosebumps - that't the test for me.
I’ve never heard such an amazing sound. It’s so very fabulous!
I've seen this video a thousand times just because I like it. But I never realized what happened at 3:00 I know there's something wrong lol
Wow!
Eine tolle Darbietung. Händel würde sich freuen. Danke.
Che voce angelica, meravigliosa, incredibile!!!
You're sold before she even sings a note.
She looks at the audience and everything about her says 'you're going to enjoy this"and then she just soars. Benjamin Zander in his classes always has an uphill struggle to persuade young performers to connect with the audience and he should just show them this.
Auszeichnung für Deine Technik Julia Lezhneva! Die Bögen sind vortrefflich angelegt!Wunderschöne Stimme!Unglaubliche Schönheit!
