I raised my son listening to Frightened Rabbits first album. Through the years both of us would be excited to hear new albums coming out and listen together. My son picked up a guitar due to his love of frightened rabbit, and related Scott after hearing about some of the anxieties Scott had growing up. Having to tell tell my boy that his favorite artist is now gone, has been his first real case of a loss and has opened his eyes to how fragile life is.
We never met Scott, but his voice is a piece of my fatherhood and my sons childhood. Although we aren’t related, we feel this loss like a brother. We thank you for giving us something that will always live on in our lives, and for playing such an awesome role in creating good memories.

RIP Scott. I loved you like a brother, though I only knew you through your beautiful heartbreaking music... I've never been this devastated by the death of someone I didn't actually know. You were a beautiful soul, a talented musician, and one hell of a poet. You put how I feel about life, about heartbreak, and about depression into perfectly stated words and songs that will last until the last vestiges of humanity.
Rest easy, my friend.

This is hard to watch knowing it was right before he passed. I love the question about his drawings at the end. You could see him perk up about something he really loved to do. And interesting to know Things is his favorite. Oh how he is missed. I caught him live anytime I got the chance. He got me through some dark times and I still love him dearly.
From 20:28 onwards, it's haunting to listen to what he had to say. I'm so sorry we couldn't have helped him. Rest easy Scott.

Sometimes, it's only after a mental break that we discern what is real and what isn't.
A lot of what we say these days has little meaning in actuallity.
Take love for example.
Do you know what it *means* ?
When everything's just a little unreal, and you cannot feel anything - How do you know you love someone?
How do you love a person when you do not *feel* the emotion we ascribe to love?
How do you love when you're hollow hearted?
Is love simply an emotion?
Simple chemistry of the mind?
Are we simply creatures ruled by CHEMISTRY?
Do we only love when we *feel* like it?!!!
Is this what man has become?
.....Or is it an action?
A thing that we DO?
An act that we perform?
What would such an act be called?
It's such a shame Scott was lost to us when he lost all faith...

Aww Scott I miss you so much man, I miss seeing you play live, I miss the feeling I got when listening to a new record you've put out, I miss how funny you are and I miss that everything you wrote was just like you get me man you really do. I dont want to patronize you and start up the whole 'it's such a shame, what a waste' because you deserve better than that but I will say thank you, for the music you gave us, for the amazing lyrics you wrote, for being so open and honest with us through your songs, for getting me through some seriously hard times and for giving me music that I could really just sit and listen to for hours. Winter of mixed drinks is still and always will be in the top 3 of my favourite records ever. Jesus I'm actually crying. Rest in peace man, fly higher than the rest of us and I hope that one day in the afterlife I get to shake your hand and then go in for a huge man hug. You're the best Scott and I miss you so much.

I've suffered from mental illness most of my life. He is struggling through this interview.
Let's consider something. When
someone is extremely artistically
talented, it is many times a double edged sword. The extreme sensitivity that enables him to be
to create such beauty,also leaves the door open for emotional angst.
With artists as gifted as he was,
his end was almost inevitable.
Still, he gave more more to us in his short life, than most give in a life time. I wish I knew him. I'm determined to go to Selkirk and sit on his bench, and mourn in my own
way. Miss you more than you know.
There are some dark parts of this interview that are now haunting. May his memory be eternal
I grow up with anxiety and indie music like Frightened Rabbit and Death Cab for Cutie was my rmotional sanctuary.Hard to living with oversensitivity like lots of artists have and this can be a gift and weight too.
These guys are absolutely fantastic artists, and have a uniquely personal stage presence. Any insight into their creative process is an absolute priviledge. Thanks for posting.

So scary that someone who is so talented and seems to be so together could kill himself! Surely there was enough in life for Scott to draw upon. Oh my god, I'm devastated. Mark Linkous suicide hit me more because I'm besotted by Sparklehorse, however this was more of a surprise as I never knew he had such demons. Scott, you are beautiful and the world is less of a place without you.

I was at the same Max Richter concert. I was also too star struck to speak to Max at the merch desk after the show, and much too awkward to speak to Scott when I saw him in the car park across the street from the venue.

Yes, of course I've listened to Scott and Frightened Rabbit otherwise why would I have commented. Depression is a mad thing. The other band members of Joy Division never realised that Ian Curtis meant every word of the lyrics on 'Closer', they just thought it was some cool shit to say. Anyways, the greatest musical artist out there now is Gregory Alan Isakov and long may he live!

What a charming and talented man he was.
As much as I loved M.O.F. when it came out, I loved each subsequent album just as much. There's so many great songs on each, I couldn't say definitively that this record was better than the others. Each had the same painful lyrics. He's a bit flippant about the 'heartache' laid bare on that album but every song on this and other recordings speaks of his pain in relation to other matters, mostly himself and his struggles to cope. Very painful to listen to at times, knowing now what happened but the music was always great and so glad to have been along for the journey. (A great shame we'll never know what those new songs were or hear how self produced music would have sounded. They had more albums in them, and I wouldn't be surprised if Owl John made another surface or two).
One of the greatest bands of the last 20 years. No other artist like him. May his legacy build as the years go on, but it's still incredibly sad that he was in so much pain.
Recommend his solo project too, Owl John.
RIP Scott. And peace to all those who suffer from depression, and addiction.

Just a year roughly after his passing, my family went for a house viewing and the sellers were actually the parents of the Hutchisons.

He looks fine, stop being retroactive. His face rubbing etc was just due to being on camera as an interviewee rather than performer. He settles pretty quickly.
agree - people are projecting. He looks tired, but tired is just... tired. Granted, as someone who has struggled with both insomnia and depression, the former can aggravate the latter significantly, but there's no way anyone could have predicted what happened just from watching youtube videos. :\

1) I kinda hate how he keeps saying at various times (here and in other interviews) how unattractive he is and how people aren't showing up for his, or the band's, looks. I mean, I know people are into them because of the music and lyrics, and i know he's just got a knack for self-deprecation, but I find him to be handsome and adorable.
2) this interviewer is really good.
3) it is REALLY heart-rending to hear him talk about the work on the 6th album, and how they'd set up their studio, etc. :(
4) I wonder if the documentary-filming was completed. Who knows if that'll ever see the light..:(
