Things To Consider Before Purchasing The Ruger Lcp MAX.

- The Ruger Lcp MAX, a beloved pistol fo how small it is. Simply a video that i made for others to make a more informed decision. Things that i noticed only after purchasing the pistol.
Don't disassemble a handgun beyond your ability to reassemble. You could have used dental floss tied to the spring and pulled it over the bar. Using the wrong tools and criticizing the manufacturer is wrong. Ruger makes quality products but they are not user proof.
Did you watch the video? I've clearly explained that this product was a good gun. I'm simply stating that these are things that were noticed while disassembly. If someone was to not feel comfortable with this said purchase because of how the mechanism works, then that is there choice. Didn't bash ruger, as well stated could put 1000 rounds through this ans probably not have an issue.
I have the Max and it has worked flawlessly. I had to give the 12 rd mags time to break in. Before I took the gun apart to clean I watched a video on how to disassemble and clean. It fixed any issues I had.
Kinda like my thoughts exactly
@@myspectactical5890 wow you're butt hurt. I got the LCP Max last summer and have 1,350 rounds thru it with no problems whatsoever. Awesome little .380 filled with Underwood Extreme Defender 12+1 and a spare 12 round in my other pocket..
Bottom line, the video title is very misleading.
To condense your video: First, the "problem" can not be duplicated. 2nd "problem" was your lack of craftsmanship/knowledge in disassembly. On top of it all, it sounds like you aren't going to replace the spring you damaged. Why should anything contained in your video make anyone hesitant to purchase that firearm? I would've been embarrassed to post this video.
Bob: you beat me to it with this post. This video makes no sense and is a whiney waste of time.
I know these comments are old but you are 100% correct. He damaged it and ran to CZcams to low key complain. That's a big problem here, some creators know what they're talking about, most do not and they post dangerous advise. Seems today, just having a camera makes someone a instant gunsmith.
I put in an MCarbo trigger and a spring kit in less time than it took you to put the trigger spring back in. You should have been embarrassed.
Ditto what Bob Gaylord said - is the green spring factory? If so, why were you removing the spring?
The tool for that job is a strong (not Chinese) steel shepherds crook pick at 180° - with that tool you will not damage the spring again.
I wasn't going to say anything but 🫣
I would urge you to reconsider posting this video. First, suggesting one put what is essentially a single action pistol that has no manual safety in a pocket with no holster (or at least none mentioned) is questionable. Second, relying on a firearm with a damaged spring is also questionable - and I am being polite with that word. Finally, I don't see the relevance to anyone who is considering this firearm, that you damaged it following disassembly beyond what the manufacturer recommends.
Very well stated!
Mine came with a holster in the case. I would 100% recommend using the holster for saftey reasons and also if the outline shows up in your pocket it makes it look like a phone outline. The ruger holster it comes with is a perfect pocket holster for me and my experiences
By the way unless I am wearing a jacket the ruger lcp max is by far my favorite CC gun. Sometimes I forget its even in my pocket because it is so comfortable. In colder weather the P365 is my personal favorite choice for CC.
@@BassPlayer9000 I like your choices! I keep the Max in either a DeSantis or Vedder pocket holster. Depending on season and situation, I have a p365 with a straight trigger, a P365XL Spectre (I shoot this gun the best out of the 4), or a Beretta Compact Carry in some form of IWB holster on my hip.
The "not having to have a holster" bit perked my ears up. I am giving benefit of doubt in that the intent was no belt holster. However, for the sake of new gun owners, I second your concerns. I have carried an original LCP for years and never, ever in pocket without a holster. If I ever decide to forego a hoster in pocket, I should probably cut to the chase and just shoot myself in the leg. Saves the suspense.
Was this made to just post something on CZcams? You messed with something you shouldn’t have and broke it. Not a defect. Hopefully no one would base their buying decision off this.
What you said.
What a Chimp..lol
Yup, I posted the same thing.
Dude says the Mags don't fall free then proves multiple times on camera that they do... then says HE screwed up his gun and then used the wrong tool to fix it screwing up the spring all on his own. Then makes a video telling other people not to buy the gun. 🤣
I have the same pistol, at first I was worried about it being a 380, but I wanted something i can carry everywhere unnoticed and comfortably during the warm months, I took it out to the woods and shot it and its impressive, I use Sig Sauer Elite V Crowns so I'm confident that if I put all 11 rounds in someone they're not bothering anyone ever again, Keep your pistols clean, oiled and carry one everywhere everyday,
I love mine. Have had zero problems with it. It's the only gun I have carried for over a year. Due to multiple surgeries on the shoulder of my dominant arm.
I’ll never get that 8 minutes and 14 seconds back
Lol! The spring needs to be replaced now. Nice 👍
My question to you is, why would mess with that spring retainer in the first place? It doesn't have anything to do with cleaning of the gun that I can see. In the Navy, we have a saying. Don't fix it, if it's not broke!
I agree. Even in the army, as soldiers we were taught to disassemble up to certain parts for cleaning.
Do not pocket carry without a holster, like he insinuated.
Not with a round in the chamber, anyway.
@@EricAnderson58 what's the point of carrying an unloaded gun? It costs $10-50 to get a decent holster, if one can afford to purchase a firearm then one should have no problem affording a decent holster to go with it. To own firearms is to be competent with handling them. If you can properly carry a firearm in a proper holster, then don't own a firearm.
@@SauerKream yada yada yada. holster is no faster than racking a round.
@@EricAnderson58 negative, are you for real? You have to draw and rack the slide, vs just drawing. It may only seem like it takes a moment, but it takes additional time nonetheless. If you're in a situation where you need to draw, why add time and a step to that process? No matter how you look at it, you're putting yourself at a disadvantage, objectively, and that just doesn't seem ideal. A loaded gun always wins versus an unloaded gun...I mean, that's obvious, right? And that's assuming "normal" circumstances, what do you do if you can't use your other hand or arm for whatever reason? What's to be worried about with one in the chamber anyway? If you're worried about carrying a loaded gun then I think carrying and possibly ownership as a whole isn't for you. Perhaps you may be better suited with a BB gun.
@@SauerKream pocket carry. Somebody sneaks up behind you you lose. relax. It's going to be ok.
It would not have occurred to me to mess with that spring. It's not mentioned in the cleaning instructions, and I've never tampered with it in my other two similar guns that have them (Taurus TCP and Kel-Tec P32.)
Otherwise, takedown for cleaning is the same.
I just use little paint brushes and q tips to oil and clean things like that,I clean my gun like its an ancient artifact 😁 might be a little unorthodox
Why would you pull that plug out in the first place?
I carry one of these everyday, in my opinion it is the best concealed carry handgun ever invented. Freedom by me homesteading has uploaded some really good videos and reviews on this pistol. That's what made me decide to get mine.
Having taken one of these completely apart to install an aftermarket trigger, my method of relaxing the hammer spring is to take a paper clip, bend the end of the paperclip into a hook with needle nose players, and use the other end of the paper clip as a handle. Hook the paper clip onto the spring, pull the spring off the pin, and settle it down. First, relax the hammer spring by easing the hammer down with your thumb while pulling the trigger.
What aftermarket trigger did you install? Are you happy w it?
@@cashmoney9256 It was a Galloway Precision Sigurd Max Short Stroke trigger. I absolutely recommend it, it feels great and eliminates all the initial take-up of the factory trigger.
@@BertieW0oster Galloway’s trigger also cures the finger pinching issue some owners have experienced.
I come away from this video thinking the problems are more yours than the pistol and it’s not a fair representation of the pistol. You have a responsibility to your viewers to do better. You’ve unfairly planted seeds of doubt. I’m disappointed.
@@gregggruse2522 what are you commenting on my post for if your problem is with the original video?
You mangled the spring and now the mangled area on the spring sometimes grabs the magazine. You need to replace the mangled spring with a new non-mangled and perfectly straight spring. After that, no more worries mate. Thanks for sharing how important it is to be careful when messing with that spring. Use the proper tools or don't do it at all.
I have the LCP II and it’s great. No function problems at all. I painted the front sight which helps a lot. I also my added a viridian E series laser.
I've been carrying one of these everyday for about 8 months and I've done three reviews on it as well as posted several shooting videos. I really like it, but it does have some flaws that will hopefully be corrected with future blocks.
One of the best pistols in the market
I’ve never had any issues with mine. Interesting observation. Isolated problem for sure. Like all things mechanical anything is possible. I would send it back to the factory for a replacement spring. Ruger makes an awesome carry pistol. Thank you for sharing. Great video.
Way to long and minimal feedback
I have one and love it haven't had any problems. One thing I noticed was when you were removing the piece were the hammer spring is you just were pulling it off look at the back of the grip there is a hole to release that you don't just yank it off the gun.
I have nothing bad to say about my LCP Max. After nearly 500 flawless rounds (tried every type I could get my hands on) and cleaning after every range trip, it is now my EDC in a front, right pocket Alabama Kydex holster (no affiliation). I use Precision One ammo. I've probably seen most of the videos on CZcams about the effectiveness of the .380 and I'm comfortable in believing it will do the job. I should mention I purchased a stainless steel guide rod as well as a tougher take-down pin, and wrapped the grip in the Talon rubber grip but there have been no other modifications. 11 rounds? Awesome!
Look at the "bar" you had trouble getting the spring back on... See the notch? Isn't the notch supposed to be on the other side, so the spring can catch itself in that notch? Otherwise, what is that notch for?!!
Very possible, appreciate the tip.
Nope nevermind, it's the sleeve for the insert. Only place I can see the "bar" goes
@@myspectactical5890 You are not understanding. The "bar" goes in the same place you have it, but turn it around, so the spring fits into that notch. The notch is there to keep the spring from sliding around.
Yes Sir. Saw the same thing, the spring is supposed to ride on that notch. I just looked at mine to make sure.
@@davidkachel bar has 2 notches. Good to go
LCP Max and GX4 are my go-to 2 carry guns. Sometimes I carry my G3c. My house handgun is the Canik TP9 Elite SC. All function wonderfully with any ammo I've tested including my self defense HP ammo.
My daughter was wanting a GX4 until she tried it. She (and I) didn't like how it aimed compared to the G3C, but I think it may just be the backstrap that was on it. The G3C just comes up in perfect sight alignment when I draw. The GX4 comes up pointing low (I think). Did you notice anything like that and did a change in backstrap fix it?
Good choice I got with max and G3c for mines
@@guruthossindarin3563 Sorry, just revisited this video. I didn't experience what you did with the GX4. I think it's a person-by-person thing if a certain gun fits them. I did put Tritium sights on my GX4. I chose the TRUGLO, daylight white dots for the Glock 17,19,22... and they fit nicely with no overhang side-to-side or on the back of the slide. I tried the Glock 43 sights but they hang over the back of the slide. My point of impact is good.
Same I carry gx4 just picked up a lcp max today. Got the 75th anniversary edition stainless steel slide with a aluminum silver trigger she is a beauty.
How would you compare the Max and GX4 recoil wise? I carry the GX4 and am fine with the recoil, but want something smaller to rotate with it. @@molonlabe9602
I bought this gun a few months back and still undecided on. I had some jamming issues with it last time I went to the range. I'm going to try it out again since polishing the feed ramp. I'm going to go back to my shield 9mm for now. The only pistols I trust in my collection are my shield 9mm and glock 17.
I don't think I will be messing with that spring ever. I would think that anything in that that needs cleaning would just be better using a can of compressed air. Thanks for the video.
I own one. The only issue I have had is the sharp edge above and in front of the trigger on the bottom of the plastic frame. Occasionally, when releasing the trigger, the skin on my finger got pinched between the trigger and the sharp edge of the frame. A small piece of 400 grit sand paper fixed that problem in three minutes. I also found that trying to get three fingers on the handle pushed my hand higher on the gun and pushed my trigger finger up into that conflict.
I’m sure you know sometimes weapons need a break in. I personally don’t start worrying too much about performance or reliability until after 500 rounds. No science to back that number up of course, just something somebody told me forever ago, and it’s been pretty accurate for me. Your mag issue looks like it’s worked itself out now?
As I said in the video, I'm sure I could put another 1000 rounds through this with general cleaning and have no issues. Still a great gun for its intended purpose of always having a defensive tool on you. Just if the spring is to shift then the issue happens. Will see If in the future causes the spring to shift and tighten the magwell
Love mine, great for summer carry, reliable, accurate!
The issues about the spring can happen to everyone who disassemble an object for first time, I'm sure if you buy a new spring you can install it perfectly, because now you have the experience to do so. Good video
This is my 3rd Ruger pistol. I have the .22, the Max and the 9 MM. I have had problems with the 22 and sent it into the factory for repair. I just got it back and have not had an opportunity to take it to the range. The LCP Max works flawlessly for me. No jamming and no misfires. I have used both the 10 and the 12 rd mags. I like its size and weight and just how it feels in the hand. I also like the 9 MM, but it is a single stack and only loads 7 rds, which should be enough. It seems to me that Ruger has some quality control issues and lets handguns out of their factory that have some defects as the complaints go across the board on different pistols from different purchasers.
What are the things to consider? What was the point other than pointing out unecessary disasembly and ignoance of reassembly of a fine firearm?
A dental hook could have helped you get the spring on it. Also, why would you take the spring off?
Sorry if this is stated before, but since that spring helps actuate the hammer, I'd get a new spring.. It being sprung, may lead to a light hammer strike at the worst possible moment. Nice gun.
I used a pair of needle nose pliers and super slowly pulled it up and rotated right onto that bar. You must have really torqued that spring...
I love mine… a well lit area and knowledge of the code of arms is very important.
I have never had reason to remove the trigger spring cover/plug. Never even thought of doing so. I have the 10-round magazine and two 12 round magazines for my LCP Max.
This shoulda been a maximum 2 minute video .......
Finally someone said it
Have you had any trouble with the slide not locking back on the last round?
What did you take the cap off?? There was no reason to do so.
Most complaints/critiques about these 380 micro pistols involve FTF/FTE, failure to return to batter, etc... For less than 400$, this dang thing runs like a top....
Hello, could you tell me what color is the slide on this?
You can go to Harbor freight and buy a set of pick tools for less than $5.00 that have many uses . One of the picks has a hook end that you can hook the end of the spring and lift up up off the cross pin while holding the pin down with a finger of your other hand . Then it won’t fly anywhere except down in the grip frame magazine cavity . When putting the spring back you can hold the pin with a finger and take the pick tool with the hook end and hook into the end of the spring and lift it up over the pin holding it down with a finger . Put the hook on top of the pin and and wiggle and work it out of the end of the spring then slide the end of the spring into the little notch on the pin. Using a pick tool with a hook end it only takes a few seconds to release the spring or to reinstall it on the pin.
I have one i havent fires yet. I appreciate all snd any info
What was the reason for removing that piece for anyway ? Seems like you kind of created a problem 🤔
He lost me when he said it “isn’t something you would go into battle with”. Too many people these days fantasize about being John Wick.
If I load all 10 rounds it won’t feed the first one same with the 12 round mag so I have to load 9 rounds or 11 rounds
Same for me. i can carry 10 only by having 1 in the chamber and 9 in the mag. 10 in the mag causes problems.
I hope that you ordered a new hammer spring because that spring is stretched out, and watch a video of how to strip down and assemble your LCP MAX. Also get the Proper Tools, and a Universal Bench Block before you try to strip down your guns. You don't want your gun to fail when you need it the most because of something you did wrong. Good video and a great micro compact choice, I chose this one over the S&W Bodyguard.
AND YOU TRUST THIS GUN WITH THE MODIFIED SPRING ?
Run 200 rounds through a new gun before you have a problem unless it does not fire. If it doesn't fire, send it back to the factory! I have not had a single problem since the first round.
Get a new spring and spring bar or contact ruger and have them fix it
Did it go bang every time you pulled the trigger 😳
Could you have one in the chamber since it doesn’t came with a thumb safety
Like John Correia requires, a good holster will cover the trigger while allowing you to get a full firing grip on the piece. J & J makes a great leather pocket holster that isn't a joke like the included fabric one.🌞
Why would you want to take that out ?
Definite QC issues with this pistol. I’ve seen multiple videos showing flaws and yet I have a separate issue. My slide practically locks in the closed position sporadically. Basically, when you want to rack the slide it acts like it is locked in place. You have to manhandle this tiny pistol. Also, it will only lock back with an empty standard mag maybe 1 out of 10 times.
Love my Lil MAX.
Any time I've had an issue with a Ruger, I've called customer service. Guess what happens when I get in touch with Ruger customer service? 100% of the time they make it right.
a cheap shepards hook and to make sure the hammer wasnt on the sear and it goes right back in. I would get ruger to send you a new spring. Its not a hard replacement. Had to replace the hammer spring on my lcp2 22lr. I made the mistake of trying to put the spring back in with the hammer still on the sear. It was a breeze once i let the hammer down.
If you damaged the spring I wouldn't recommend carrying it. I'm sure they would send you out a new spring if you asked. Maybe they can give you some tips how to install it correctly as well.
I haven’t read the manual on the LCP, but I bet removing that piece of polymer isn’t part of routine maintenance. It’s like removing the main spring housing in a 1911 every time you clean it. You just went a little too far. Now replace the spring, it’s out of warranty otherwise and unsafe according to anyone’s spec.
You have exceeded your skill level😂
So what’s the problem?
I got the same gun. I bought the 12 round magazine for it and it’s garbage. Took it outta the pack and wanted to start loading it and the top of the magazine round loader just pops off and won’t stay in the magazine and just pops of the mag spring. Not to pleased with the 12 round mag but the 10 round is fine. I heard it i reach out to Ruger they will send a replacement mag but I’ll try that. Just sucks buying something and when you wanna use it, you can’t… nice video sir… stay safe…👍👍👍
the 12 round mag works fine for me.. might have been a fabric issue. i hope the one they’ll replace it with will works fine

Both of my 12 round mags function great. Hope you get it resolved.
Was it a Ruger mag or a off brand
@@rickperry240 it was a Ruger factory mag
I’m glad you showed me what Not to Do.
Sounds like you damaged the spring. It is silly to blame the manufacturer for your mistake
Just FYI. Just grab a small spring puller for something like that. They are five bucks or so.
Looks like you put the pin in backwards. The spring should rest in the detent of the pin.
Literally a 2 min preamble…
I don't want to be critical, but unless I missed something, the only thing I came away as far as "Things To Consider Before Purchasing..." is to consider not taking it apart any further than recommended or one's abilities to put it back together. I don't understand why you initially took that little piece off at the bottom rear of the grip. I don't yet have an LCP Max. (This video popped up in my research.) Was that part of the maintenance procedure?
In any event, I would not be comfortable continuing to rely on a gun with a known damaged spring. Consider having it repaired properly before betting your life on it. ;)
That little plastic piece is supposed to pop out without pulling the spring. In fact it pops out so easily that 4 o'clock carry somehow popped it off and now it's missing altogether. 🌞
Agree a new spring is in order.
i wouldn't be dry firing it that much or you'll run into more issues you can warn us about.
Do not consider any of these things in this video before puchasing the Ruger LCP Max. Thank you.
M-carbo sells upgrade kit
Hope by now, you changed out your spring. Mcarbo sells lots of upgrades for the LCP Max. Better than the other competition. 20 min to put it back in? Shouldn't take more than 3 or 4 tries with a punch or needle nose pliers.
Good video Forrest.
Anyone know what are we talking about? I have no clue why this video? I'm lost 😅
The only reason to take that part off is to change the hammer spring. No need to remove for normal cleaning.
I bought this with high hopes of replacing my venerable S&W Bodyguard. Higher capacity, similar size. While installing the Talon Grips that this gun desperately needs, I popped that pin out by massaging the grip to set the Talon properly. Took me a few minutes to figure out the problem and fix it, but left me wondering at how thin the grip frame was. Took it to the range and it was snappier than my Bodyguard. Good capacity, but I ended up selling it and keeping the Bodyguard. IMO, the S&W is just a better made gun. YMMV.
Remember this gun is a sub-compact/micro-compact. Your hands look thick, so I bet two things (or maybe one of two things) are happening. 1. The bottom of your hand is rubbing on the mag plate creating enough friction that is making the mag “stick.” 2. When you have a full grip on a pistol this size and you push the mag-release, the side that the mag-release pops-out from (right-side in most cases), it’s covered by your hand. This does not allow the mag release to fully disengage from the magazine, which can cause it to “stick.”
This is not a gun problem, as this gun was designed for deep concealment. So these types of guns are meant to be used as backups or as a last ditch effort. If you will be practicing emergency or tactical reloads with this gun, you will need to slightly change the position of your hand before you go to release the slide.
Hope this helps!
Best of luck, and thanks for sharing.
Bought mine in February and it jus keep Rusting on the front of the slide changed it twice and it does the same thing jus keeps Rusting.. I carry it in the holster it came with.. idk what is up with the Rusting

Need To Replace That Spring Tho...
Don't see a need to remove that. Ruger will 110% send a spring for free or repair if u want to mail it. I have used CS 3 timed and even screws i stripped and was willing to pay for they sent for free.
But why?
Pretty decent gun.....seems it's not the highest build quality. Prefer my sig p238 over the Ruger LCP max.
The 238 is an excellent gun, but it is a cock-and-lock carry gun like a 1911. I had one and loved it, but now I have an LCP MAX to carry. Both very small and concealable.
You talk like a politician circles
I don't think he was lying (politicians), but he was talking in circles and JUST as confusing as any politician
The spring was a nightmare to re-attach in the Ruger Security 9, too. It looks like you have the bar in backward - the spring should be on the detent on the bar.
There are two detents on the bar. ruger-docs.s3.amazonaws.com/_manuals/LCP-MAX-g4Swq28Jb5f.pdf page 41 part # 10. He does not have it in backwards.
My 3 issues with this gun is the magazine button sticks out too much I don't like the hammer being in a full cock position and it only come with 1 magazine.
You broke the weapon! That's not a gun issue.
If you don't like a hammer fired gun and the big green spring, buy a Glock 42. It is striker fired. You pay for the smaller size.
Or a Sig p365. But he probably wants hammer fired since he shoves it in his pocket with no holster. Which is still dumb but even dumber with a striker fired pistol.
You must have extremely large pockets!

The damage to that Green spring is most likely from inserting the mag incorrectly I doubt removing that cap caused any damage to that spring, and try to think about what you're going to say before you get on camera, get the right tools
