work for the Agartala-Akhaura international rail connectivity with Bangladesh would be complete within December this year. The project, which was scheduled to be completed by December 2020, was delayed due to land acquisition issues and the Covid-19 pandemic. Union Minister of State for Railways Raosaheb Patil Danve said he has asked the concerned officials to complete works on the schedule for the second Indo-Bangla international railway project at Sabroom in South Tripura and added his government has plans to build a multi-modal transit hub at Sabroom. In April 2022, Bangladesh Railway Minister Md Nurul Islam Sujon took stock of the project’s progress on the Bangladesh side and reportedly expressed anguish at the slow-paced work. He asked the construction agencies to finish the remaining works within December this year, failing which serious consequences would follow. The Agartala-Akhaura railway link is a 15-km-long stretch and would connect Akhaura in Bangladesh with an international immigration station at Nischintapur along the Indo-Bangla international border. The ambitious connectivity project is expected to reduce the time spent on travelling from Agartala to Kolkata via Dhaka to 10 hours from 31 hours by train since the route would effectively reduce the distance from the existing 1,600 km to 550 km. On the second Indo-Bangla international railway connectivity project at Sabroom in South Tripura, the Union minister said, “I visited Sabroom near the Bangladesh border. If the multi-modal transport hub is completed, people can travel from Kolkata in 16 hours instead of 38 hours. If the hub is built, it will be a huge advantage. Very good project indeed. Going through Bangladesh will, of course, have many international formalities --- like passport, visa, custom clearance etc. Almost all the countries of Europe are connected with this type of transnational railways, but they are more developed and prosperous, and are not suffering from terrorism.
Besides giving people to people connectivity between Kolkata and Agartala, this rail line will especially be very useful in connecting the North-Eastern states with the rest of India, and will contribute to the fast development of North-East.

3 . It will not be possible to travel from Kolkata to Agartala by train , without transhipment .
4 . Neither , it is possible to send goods rake .
5 . Bangladesh would be greatly benefitted from transhipment charges .
6 . Bangladesh is seeking foreign funding for conversion of 93 km Tongi - Akhaura line to dual guage .
7 . It will be a long wait .

You have not explained how and Akhaura Dhaka section will ve converted to Broad gauge from meter gauge..only then can Kolkata Agartala via Dhaka Rail link be feasible..

why are we not planning an expressway between kolkata and agartala via bdesh.
For security reasons and climatic conditions I guess. We know every year Bangladesh faces massive flood. And at times more than 50% of land is under water, so it will be costly to build any expressway. Second is security reasons, we already know that there is major issue of illegal migration and there are lot of far right islamist group in Bangladesh. So, expressway will require more security.
It is this very reason, building gas pipeline from Central Asia to India just a dream. In this case Pakistan is only major issue. Pakistani Government knows they can get lot of money but Pakistani citizens will not be in favor. So, their Government will never let it materialize.
Expressway is very very costly and also Bangladsh follody situation be like - stop baby

Even after competition of this link no direct train is possible to run between kolkata to Agartala. Because Dhaka Agartala section is meter gauge.
So building a meter gauge line is a foolish decision by the railway.
Dual gauged line (Meter gauged + Broad gauged)
This project is not profitable at all for Bangladesh. It will only benefit India. The traffic of Bangladesh Railway will increase.
On other side you dont have to spent much on it

India aur Bangladesh ke bich Passenger Trains ke liye 3 routes hai lekin aap ne yeh nahi bataya ki Goods train kitne routes pe chalti hai. Aur ek jankari aapne nahi diya. Kya Dhaka aur Akhaura ke bich broad gauge line hai yah meter gauge. Kyunki agar broad gauge line nahi hai toh phir yatrio ko Kolkata se Dhaka aur fir Dhaka sa Agartala tor ke jana hoga.
Bangladesh me special tarah ke track dale gaye hai kahan 3 rail hoti hai. 1 rail common aur 1 rail narrow gauge wali trai naye doosri rail broad gauge walo train. To wahan el hi track pe dono gauge chalte hai.
