3d printed air raid siren

  • Tried 3D printing another siren, and this one turned out a lot better. The motor is a bit underpowered (although I think it's an issue with my power supply) and it doesn't really get to full speed unless the air intake is blocked.

    Finally, an STL that has a ratio that will produce the 'carter' sound. 10/12=5/6 so that will need double the RPM, I make it about 5800 but I'm cool with that.

      I'd love to see it when it's done. One thing I am not sure about though is the motor fitting. I designed the stator to fit a certain size DC motor and if it's scaled down it might not fit. You could "fix" it with a few different sized drill bits, though.

    The reason it doesn't get up to full speed unless you cover the intake is the same reason a vacuum cleaners motor increases the speed and subsequently the sound frequency when the hose is blocked. Without the resistance of air the rotor can spin freely.
    It is advised not to do this on a vacuum cleaner as the motor run the risk of overheating when it runs amok.
    This is why the siren gets mostly silent and speeds up when covered. It sucks air in from the big opening on the side and throws it out the slits radially. The movement of the air limits the speed of the rotor. Without the air the rotor spins freely but can't make any worthwhile sound.

    How do you assemble it

    • @Snowcube
      @Snowcube  Před 3 lety

      You push the motor into the hole for it, then push the rotor onto the motor shaft. You might have to drill out the hole a bit to make it fit.
