Den Haag: Gevangenpoort en sloop panden langs Hofvijver in 1925 in kleur! The Hague in 1925 in color

- The "Gevangenpoort" is a medievil jail near the Dutch Houses of Parliament in The Hague, The Netherlands. In 1925 the city council decided to demolish a row of houses in from of the Gevangenpoort on the edge of the famous pond, called the Hofvijver. The main objective was to widen the road in order to cope with the increased motorized traffic.
This film shows the situation near the Gevangenpoort just before the demolishment started as well as footage of the demolishment activity itself
This area of the Hague is well known because it is nearby the entrance to the square of the Houses of Parliament, where the Dutch government used to be housed in the Ridderzaal building.
The orginal B&W film has been motion-stabilized, halved in speed, restored, enhanced and colorized with state of the art A.I. software. Please note that the original film was very dark. It was hard to bring out more detail without introducing ugly artefacts.

I know! it seems no matter where these are shot in Europe pre WWI looks incredibly peaceful and happy and healthy and prosperous compared to anything post WW2 and it just keeps getting worse and worse and the world is an increasingly ugly and depressing place to live since then and I'm convinced these wars were engineered for that very purpose.
I look at these and I think wow what I wouldn't give to know a life like that today! and people always say "the past was the worst"...I don't think so!
i love old architecture, no glass and concrete towers, old designs, different window sizes with pretty designs around them.

progressie voor mobiliteit.. een van de pijnlijkste ingrepen in Den Haag. Goed om nu te zien en dat het nog duidelijker is wat er verdwenen is. Het was wel een magistrale bottleneck in een stadscentrum.

I love the little guy standing in the middle of the road, staring at the camera.
This video shows pedestrians, cyclists and hand cart operators safely sharing road space with horses and motor traffic. We will have to revert to this civilised way of life, not just for the health of the planet, but also for the health of our cardiovascular systems.

As I am amazed at the inspiration of looking back nearly 100 years, imagine if THEY could imagine they were looking 100 years into the future. As I look at 1925, imagine them knowing as they looked into the camera that they were looking at, or projecting themselves into 2021. A truly fascinating time travel.

De hofvijver komt zo beter tot zijn recht en zo mooi waren die huizen nou ook weer niet. En een enorme bottleneck voor het verkeer.

Ik weet niet of ik je mening deel. Het deels ronde gebouw op de hoek was prachtig. De gevangenpoort heeft nu een rare uitstulping en is lelijk afgeknot.
liever een bottleneck , dan een zee van verkeersborden met snelheidslimiet en diesel verbod. Maar inderdaad, met wat uitgekiend geplaatst plantenbakken volgestouwd met geraniums en petunia's komt de hofvijver nog beter tot zijn recht (???...). trouwens, de behoefte een betere, veiliger route voor speciale rouwstoeten werd weer actueel. Mogelijk dat dat een reden was voor "renovatie"

Het witte kioskje op het Buitenhof was er één van vele in het land van dit type. Er is er nog één over in Nederland : op de Buurtweg te Wassenaar. Dichtbij de Landscheidingsweg. In die buurt waren er meer.
Ja die ken ik: het is (was?) nu een theehuisje.
@@Rick88888888 Als ik het goed zeg was het een koffiehuisje, maar oorspronkelijk een limonadehuisje. Na verplaatsing en restauratie zou het weer open gaan, maar de restauratie bleek zo omvangrijk dat dat uitgesteld werd. En dat moet nog gebeuren. Het heeft wel een nieuwe eigenaar. Vanwege dit knelpunt reden er tot 1924 trams dóór het Binnenhof ! Daar zijn geen(?) opnames van bekend. Speciale lage trams waren dat, die dan ook "laagdakkers" werden genoemd. "Bij toeval" is nr. 164 bewaard, en staat in het HOVM. Rijd zelden. Er is er één te zien naast de witte kiosk.
Boeiend! Ik ken geen opnames van trams die door het binnenhof rijden, jij wel?

Gek is dat, als ras-Hagenaar zat ik in het begin te kijken van; waar is dit in hemelsnaam maar verderop bleek dat dit reeds lang voor mij gesloopt was !

You can see the rails around 01:05 and there is a tram at 01:33 (on the right). Also there is a three-coach (!) tram passing in the background at 03:31 and a tram can be seen through the Gevangen Poort at 03:45. At 04:37 there is another two-coach tram as well as a single coach tram at 07:04 in the distance on the Lange Vijverberg. Are you sure you really watched the video?

00 50 uur. De tijden dat wij bij de schoeplaan hebben gewoond was er links van de portiek deur bij binnenkomst een woning aan de overkant daar aan de linkerkant woonde destijds een hindoestaanse moslim hij was altijd in zijn eentje. die man die daarzo in die woning is overleden. daar hebben deze mensen het over in mijn gedachte
dus nu ik hierover praat en zei dit mij vertellen in mijn gedachte weten hun van handeling tot handeling wat ik zou gaan doen.
