'Overlooking' sin is an immensely important point. Overlooking a sin is different; you don't begrudge the matter, you don't harbor resentment.
The difference between 'overlooking' and forgiving is in the case of the latter you remember the sin no more. If you forgive then it is no longer remembered, you let your guard down, and trust is completely restored.

We must study to show ourselves approved to God (1 Timothy 2:15):
Anyone who first turns to God through Jesus is like a babe (Hebrews 5:13). We must come to Him as we are. The only way a babe can grow in God is by reading with the Holy Spirit, praying, and doing everything Jesus has said about God the Father and himself. Jesus has told the entire world what eternal life is: it is to know both him and the Father (John 17:3). Who can know the mind of God [the Father] unless God himself reveals it to him; even Jesus doesn’t know all of the things of God the Father until it is revealed to him (Mark 13:32, Matthew 24:36).
As we read God’s word, He will reveal more and more of His truth to us. As God has said through Jesus, for whosoever has to him shall be given, and he shall have more in abundance: but whosoever has not from him shall be taken away even that he has (Matthew 13:12). Those who listen and do the words of Jesus will know God, for all that Jesus said is from God the Father (John 12:49-50).
