- It's amazing what Mother Nature will do to a car that's left out in the elements. This Nova drag car has been sitting for at least 10 years, and I bought it from my neighbor. It'll make a great entry level drag car, and it was a SUPER QUICK transformation from crusty old abandoned drag car to a somewhat promising drag car project. Follow along as I blast this thing with Super Clean and follow it up with a blast of water from my budget-friendly electric pressure washer.

I would love to have another NOVA of this generation.
Had a '76 coupe, straight 6, 250, 4 speed on the floor
One of the best cars I've ever owned.
Hey the B-2 bumper stickers were from Lockheed in Marietta GA, it allowed you to park in the B-2 parking lot!
I just passed there the other day. Well lockheed at least
Good to know!
Facts because l worked there n l I LIVE IN MARIETTA!!!!!😂😂😂😂😂😂
Its crazy how expensive these Nova's have gotten over the last few years! Im glad you were able to get one back up and going again!
Penny Pinching and Elbow Grease are my favourite tools.
🇨🇦👍
I've been known to pinch a few pennies!
Yup agreed, nothing beats the jet wash then some 2500 wet and dry sand paper, finished off with a machine polish. It's no good just cleaning it, that top layer of oxidized paint has got to come off.
One of the best investments I ever made was buying an industrial steam cleaner/pressure washer when a truck shop closed down. You can use it as a high pressure spray washer with hot water, or lower pressure with steam. I haven’t had to use any cleaners on old projects since I bought it, just the water/steam alone cleans anything. You do have to be careful that you don’t burn yourself, it gets really hot and it does take up some room in the shop. I put it on a small trailer so it can be taken outside, but the trailer takes up even more room.
Some people don't like the mid 70s nova body style, but I'm a fan, they have underrated potential and I've seen them turned into absolute awesome rides
Right They are out their but really not seen 😐
@@mauricemccoy3228 I have a 76 Pontiac Ventura I restored..I have also seen a 75 nova in my area, but other than that no others
Glad to see you save this one, I bought a 78 that was a Drag/ Bracket Racer sometime in its past life, im now fixing her back up to make it my daily and do the same stuff with drag and bracket on the weekends.
Man I hated these cars in the day but love them now.... hope the frame was connected or one put in it..... lol. They always run down the road sideways💫
Nice find! Looks like a really good quick flip and a great starting point for someone.
Yes, I'm kinda tempted to put a simple small block in it and get it one step closer to being a functional car. We'll see...someone may snatch it up before I get a chance to fool with it.
Love the fact you cleaned the front tires and wheels only to replace them with different one
They might have done that so they could see how good the tires were as far as dry rot.
Haha yeah, gotta have clean garbage!
Great find, she cleaned up real good, I love it, thanks for sharing
Thank you for watching!
Great find and great that you rescued it before it rotted away
Congratulations on your recent purchase!!! You are off to an awssome start!!!! She came out beautiful!!!!
Thank you John! Now I just need to scrounge together some parts to build an engine for it.
This IS Hotrodding! My motto is the KISS method, Keep It Simple Silly! Made my Friday thank you.
Thanks for watching Mark! I love simple drag cars as well...definitely the most fun way to go drag racing.
When using degreaser on paint start spraying from the bottom up to avoid getting streaks in the paint
This brings back memories. In 1977 I bought a brand new 1977 Chevy Nova. I ordered the same color as this one (Aqua metallic) with a tan interior. The only options I ordered were automatic transmission & power steering (Which was not standard in 1977), and I got the stereo system from another place. Total cost; $4,100. It lasted for 10 years.
That's awesome! Crazy to think that Power Steering wasn't standard back then.
I had a 75 SS hatchback. 350 4speed. Loved that car and really wish I still had it.
..the skull and crossbones license plate is just ..just ..there !! that is absolutely brilliant whoever did that - thumbs up from New Zealand
I had a 76 nova "concourse" made in Canada drag car and man do I want that car back now lol. Great videos.
Love the car , would make a nice street car!
Yes sir, it shouldn't be too difficult to get a title for it. Our state laws here in Tennessee are helpful in those situations.
I had a really clean 78 nova about 10 years ago. Built a really stout 350 for it & ran it for about a year. Then put a cammed LS3 with 1000cfm carb in it. Had built 8.5 10 bolt, cal trac bars, th350 with 4k stall. Ran 7.20s on motor all day with full interior & street drove it everywhere it went. Super fun street car.
Oh man, that sounds like a lot of fun! I love a quick car that you can get out and drive. I'd love to put something together just to make it a cheap bracket car, but we'll see how it goes.
Awesome car 77 . Thank you God Bless
My first car was a 75 Nova LN. Four door with the little 262 v8. Factory buckets with a console. Midnight blue. A great car! Was my parents car first of course and my dad put headers and a small 4 barrel on it. You could make a nice little sleeper with these cars!
Love all 2 door Novas From 63 - 79 they all every year makes the best muscle car small block a good automatic and rear end and you are there .
GREAT VIDEO FOR THE FIRST TIME ,, I LIKE DRAG RACING ,,AND I DO AT THE QUARTER MILE IN L,A. CA. I just purchased a 57 f100 havent been move over 30 years. She need a deep cleaning.. this video help👍
Awesome!
Another awesome job my friend!!!
Thank you for watching Doug!
Just landed on your channel via the ‘87 K5 you painted. Always have a soft spot for Novas. Pretty sure I was made on prom night of ‘84 in a ‘69 Nova lol. Your sentiments on the electric power was are the same as mine. Love my SunJoe one I got from Amazon for about $90-100. If you haven’t, check out a surface cleaner for it for doing concrete and flat surfaces. Real handy. I also did a foam cannon as well a curved lance tip for spraying underneath vehicles. The real beauty of electric washers are you can put a kid of about 8+ on it and set em loose. Enjoy your content sir and I’m subscribed and combing through your videos now.
Also I picked up a ‘79 K5 that had about the same crust on it as this Nova. I used the super clean in the big jug put into spray bottles. Sprayed and let soak for about an hour then hit it with the power washer. That thing is rough but it has better factory coat than my ‘88 has. Luckily the ‘85 M1009 Blazer I picked up was repainted. If you can’t tell I’m a K5’r lol. Must be why CZcams suggested your K5 repaint to me. I’m thinking about doing the same to my ‘88 in all white until I get time and a shop built to do it high dollar back in the white and red 2-tone it is now.
My first car was a 75 Nova. Miss that thing every day
Always liked these Nova's. It has a 75 grill in it based on the rounded corners of the front turn signal lights.
That definitely had me confused before I ran the numbers. I assumed it was a '75 until I looked at the tag.
Definitely a viable drag car project, cleaning it up and adding a matching set of Weld wheels up front adds appeal big time.
I never really cared for this body style, but it's growing on me. The Welds definitely helped.
Hi I'm interested in buying it@@HotRodHoarder
How much$$
@@stephenward9969 Looking to get $1600 as a roller.
Badass! Love the body style and your clean up job came out great.
Thank you!
Wow!, brother, I freaking love it! I can't wait until I can find out what you do with it!!!
I like it, wouldn't mind having it myself. I remember when these were new.
I've never really loved this body style, but it's definitely growing on me.
Terry is a good guy and that thing cleaned up good be a killer street strip car
Turned out awesome!
I really love my electric pressure washer as well.
I never thought I'd like it, but yeah...very easy, cheap and quiet.
cool purchase and flip. someone will have a very cool nova.
Yes! Someone will fall in love with this thing and give it all the attention it deserves.
Damn, cleaned up pretty good!
I just had to have a look at this video because it reminded me of the 77 Nova that I used to have back in the day.. black with a red interior hatch back
Loved them Nova’s. Had two 73 SS and a 78 w/half landau top.
I've always been a Nova fan...this is my first one of this body style. It's definitely growing on me.
You’re right buddy, a little soap, some times rattle can and a set Cragers and you’ve got instant Hot Rod great job again 👍👍👍👍👍✅
I love a quick and easy job that totally changes the appearance of an old car.
Amother excellent video !!! You really amaze me !!! You are greatly appreciated and i lool forward to all your videos....hotrod hoarder is number 1 by far !!! Keep up the great work and just saying hi to all my gear heads from quebec canada !!!!
Thank you for the kind words George!
Was suprised to see something that new! lol
Yeah, definitely a little bit too new for my taste, but couldn't pass it up haha.
I am sure you find plenty of old small block motors. just install a starter small block and cheap trans and give someone a builder that runs! You, your dad, and a Saturday is all you need! I once bought an old street drag car (no cage) from a farmers field. It was a 76 Monza Town Coupe. It had a 72 400 4 bolt from a caprice in it. Was quite the car and I am sad that I had to sell it. Orange with a black vinyl top and never registered as it was used for racing at our local-ish track for lower et (no cage needed) type of stuff. It still had the original comp cams box from 1977 in the trunk lol
That's kinda what we're thinking. Put together a decent small block from some of the parts we've gathered up over the years. We could assemble it without spending a lot of money and it would definitely add value to the car.
@@HotRodHoarder I think that would be the easiest choice. I’m sure you guys have a stash of parts even from the period. I have to admit I’ve never been really fond of that body style of car or the 1973-1977 ElCaminos. But it would definitely not take you very long to throw together a small block and shove it in there. Would love to see the project come to fruition.
i like it. i owned a 76, and a 77. nice cars imo
I'd love to have that nova!!!! 😀
Definitely a good score and something worth building! 👌
I'm tempted to put an engine in it and get it going again, but we'll see if someone swoops in here and buys it.
I really like this car ! I had a '77 with a pretty stout small block in it. Mine was maroon, but had a bunch of body filler under that shiny paint. It was a real tire burner, until it started losing oil pressure. I traded it for a '66 F100. Turns out, the pickup tube for the oil pump had fallen out, and was laying in the pan. I still have the F100 !
Ahh man! I hate it when that happens...I like to put a little weld on my pickup tube.
Super clean is great stuff, buy in gallon jugs and use in garden sprayer
Nice looks good
When I'm out snagging up old stuff, I typically hose em down with a full strength "awesome stuff" from the dollar store and come back over top with full strength purple power, makes all that nasty tree sap, pollen and stuck on mold/scale lift real easy, typically no scrubbing at all!
Awesome stuff definitely works well. I've used it and Mean Green, Purple Power...lots of different types of cleaner. Mean Green used to be the absolute BEST but they toned it down quite a bit so it's not quite as potent as it used to be.
That stuff is great.
Gotta be careful with full strength.
It will streak or stain the paint if it sits on there to long.
im gonna have to go to walmart pick me up a spray bottle of super clean for my 87 foxbody gt, the nova looks good btw.
It would be nice to see it race again looks to be in good shape I had a 1977 nova it was a fun car
It would be an easy one to get going again. I originally thought I would just do a quick sale on this thing, but I might go ahead and stick an engine in it.
My neighbor gsve me some of that superclean stuff. I can say that is some good stuff, cuts through just about anything, even ate through a little bit of wheel paint!
Yeah, it's pretty tough stuff. You definitely don't want it to sit on paint for very long when its at full strength.
I had a 78 hatchback dark metallic blue. Had a 68 396 and was a ripper!
Awesome! I love how much room is in the engine bay...big block sounds nice!
Cant wait to see it done
Thanks for watching James!
Another great video 👍🏽
Thank you for watching!
Really cool Nova! And very intact! The clean up turned out very well, I think too. This might also make a good pro street car too. (is pro street still in style, I don't know...lol.)
I love pro street. I think it's making a comeback...and yes, this car would make a cool one.
Nice little Nova, I have a 77 myself, the 75-79 models aren’t super popular but they’re good cars, pretty light and work well with simple bolt ons. I’d love to see yours with a big block and nitrous. 😁👍🏻
Now you're just trying to break that 10 bolt haha. I kinda thought a budget-friendly nitrous combination would be fun though.
@@HotRodHoarder
Hell yeah nitrous is always fun, 8.5 10 bolt is a stout rear end, I have Moser axles, Strange spool, and C clip eliminators obviously, in mine, I’ve been beating on it for ten years with no issues. 👍🏻
@@shitbox7413 Hot Rod Magazine had an article YEARS ago, where they talked about upgrades. IIRC, the guy who either wrote the article or the guy who they followed as he built the rear end had a 2nd gen Camaro with an 8.5 in it running 8.2 quarter mile times. That is what keeps me from putting a Ford 8.8 in my S10...I still hope I can find an 8.5 for it.
@@shitbox7413 Mine's an '89. Getting a 6.0L LQ4 with a 4L80E.
@@jayinmi3706
Right on man, I’ve done the LS deal 3 times already, I’m anxious for something different, I’m thinking 408 SB, or a big block...
SuperClean is good stuff, I’ve used it for a long time but I would suggest using gloves. I got into it one time too many and started having a reaction to it. I had used it on my 3/4ton diesel pick-up and 5th wheel trailer on Friday and Saturday morning I woke up with red, burning, itchy hands and feet (I was wearing flip-flops while working with it). It got pretty bad and I went to the doctor and it he called it dishydrosis. I’ve never had a reaction to anything, soaps or medicines or food but apparently it’s possible to develop a sensitivity to something like this if you contact it too often or too much at one time. I still use it but I wear shoes, thin rubber gloves, and pay attention to the wind so I don’t breath the spray. The best plan is to not “overdose” on it in the first place and avoid the hassle of a reaction.
Oh wow! Yeah, it's pretty strong stuff...luckily I didn't have any type of reaction with it.
Cowl tag breaks down as ST77 for 1977 model year, 1XX27 for Chevrolet Nova two door sedan, W is for Willow Run, MI assembly, 64R for Light Buckskin vinyl bench seat interior, A52 is for front bench seat, 44 44 is upper and lower Medium Green Metallic exterior paint, 11D is the fourth week of November 1976 production, some of the codes on the bottom are for things like steering column color, among other plant options. The cowl tag had items of interest to/concerning Fisher Body which although part of GM, sometimes the plants were separate from the assembly plants.
Thank you for the information!
Nice man love the nova
Thank you Tommy!
I had a '76 Nova so this car is really cool for me. People really didn't know that it is on a Camaro platform. Or the Camaro is on the Nova platform.
It is really cool that Chevrolet used that platform on two iconic cars.
I am going to look 👀 in my neighbors yards tonight for hidden race novas 😂
Dude I had one in highschool , was a sweet car and one day I want another one 🤔😊
This is defiantly the perfect budget build hotrod for teenagers.
My first car exact same color!!😎
Man if it wasn’t so far away I’d make you an offer on it cool little car 👍
It has some potential, for sure!
I think I would have power washed 1st but still turned out great 👍 !
Yeah, I probably should've loosened up some of that junk before I started scrubbing, but still happy with the results. Thanks for watching!
I love the Nova. People hate on the disco Novas. Not me. They might not have big blocks but the SS cars just look so mean. I've owned a lot of these cars. They are great driving cars.
Of you had a running small block laying around that would be a fun 1/8 mile weekend toy.
TOTALLY unrelated but I couldn't help but notice the sticker on the right quarter glass which says DD 743. If you are a Marine or sailor, you automatically know that is a destroyer. In this case, the USS Southerland. She served from '44 until decommissioned in 1981; from '72-'80 as a training ship in San Diego. My thinking was this may (or may not) help you in your research. I like the car, do they still do bracket racing? I haven't been to a drag strip since 1988.
Watching from Erie Pennsylvania
great video you proved ya dont have to throw the bank at a project to aubstantially increase profits and or appearance ....
This model of Chevy Nova was beautiful, because they were a medium car in the 70s. In my country Dominican republic my father's was looking to buy one. And nobody sald that car in the 90s.
Yeah, very cool. Turboed big block will make it move. Lol 👍
That sounds like a broken rear end in the making lol.
I like it..lots of potential!🤔
Thanks Johnny, I'm tempted to hang onto it and put a cheap engine together.
i use pressure eashers to clean engine blocks...subframes...etc.
That is a nice car I'm from Michigan and they just don't last like that around here have fun with it if I didn't have my S10 I would be interested to come and get it keep up the great vids Chris
Oh yeah, I'm sure these cars were rotted out after just a few years up there. Not exactly the prime time for GM when it came to steel quality and primer/paint quality.
Some time's you get lucky and find something we picked up in the last year an 1984 S-10 regular cab short bed with 64000 miles and had been well taken care of and rustproofed were just building a street rod for my wife and I small block and turbo 400 for fun . But that won't be the last my son's like to drive and build keep looking and making good videos Chris
Nice car
Thanks for watching Eddie!
Look good be good daily driver lot people dint like that year but u fix look good
Surprised the super clean didn’t take the paint off lol
Nice find! I had a 77 Nova Hatchback as my first car. Loved it! I drove that car for over 10 years. I do know pretty much everything about the 5th gen Nova. This one here has the 75-76 grill. That 8.5 rear IS factory equipment. They never put a 7.5 in these cars. The 7.5 come out in the "metric" years starting in 1978 into the g body (Malibu, Regal, Cutlass, Monte Carlo.)
Wow, I had no idea! Very cool that it came with the 8.5. I assumed GM had already made the switch to the dinky rear end. I noticed the early grille when I was trying to figure out the year of the car (before I looked at the numbers). Thanks for the info!
A couple of corrections. First, the grill in that car is a 1975 grille. 1976 thru 1978 all has the same “standard” grille. There were other grilles those years (SS, Rally, Concours, Custom).
Second, the 7.5” rear absolutely was used in 4th gen Novas (1975-79). Mostly in 6-cylinder applications but also in some 305 equipped Novas.
Cool!!!!!!!!!
Thank you for your continued support!
I have a built LSA right out of my ctsV that you need for this car 👀👀 1012 to the wheels. Have all dyno sheets and receipts for work on the engine
That would break that 10 bolt REAL quick haha.
@@HotRodHoarder yeah, probably lol. Thats half the fun though, right.
My first car was a 78 nova custom.my parents had a 76 nova when I was little.
Very cool! I remember seeing these cars on the road when I was a kid, but you rarely see them any more.
Lot's of potential, i'd go on jegs and purchase 4 drag wheels from them, they are very affordable and it would afd so much value to vehicle. That super clean stuff works great the only thing is ya can't leave it on for too long or it will almost strip paint. God bless.
Oh yeah, those Jegs Spike wheels are my favorite...they make ANY car look good!
All old novas always have the front bumper pushed up just enough to make it look like a goon. My step father had one this color and a chevy orange one and they both had the bumper shoved up just that little bit.
Every one I've ever seen is like that lol. I always assumed it was caused by using the bumper jack.
I had a Snap-tite model kit of this era Nova.
Nice! I used to build model cars like crazy, but I don't think I ever had one of this body style.
@@HotRodHoarder I found it - Revell Snap-Together Chevy Stock Car Racer No. H-1124 | 1:32 scale. Red with decal #23. There is also a cop car version. Came out in 1978
I'd like to have it lol it could be cool budget racer
It would definitely be a good budget drag car. I'm tempted to put a small block together for it, using parts we have laying around.
Do you have any .03 400 .500 dome piston for 6 in rod
That would make a great sleeper car
That’s a great car, slide a small block in there with a bump stick and just try and make it go 12s and be able to drive it on the street
It would be a fun budget-friendly project. I have enough junk to stick together a small block for it...might just do that if someone doesn't swoop in and buy this thing.
@@HotRodHoarder Well now that you have cleaned it and put shiny wheels on it I bet your gettin ideas, and whats your asking price
