  • @paulw858
    @paulw858 Před 6 lety +24

    I've been a hardcore fan of the franchise from the opening weekend of the very first film. You could call it an obsession. I have a dozen props from the movies, I have so many different shirts and hats, shooting scripts for the second and third movies, signed DVDs, and multiple copies of the movies on home release... the first one takes the cake, though, since I have the Fullscreen DVD, Widescreen DVD, Uncut Edition, UMD, Blu-ray, SAW Trilogy DVD box set, and another trilogy box set, but this time with an included Billy the Puppet bobblehead.
    Suffice it to say, I was obsessed with the movies, perhaps an unhealthy amount. I loved every one, but SAW VI was the absolute pinnacle of the franchise for me. SAW V took two viewings for me to enjoy, but now I do quite enjoy it. SAW VI, though... aside from the opening trap, that movie is perfection and a complete love letter to the fans.
    But saw 3d came around, and oh boy, that movie was a disaster. I don't know if it was all the behind the scenes director drama, the breakup one of them was going through, or just the apparent need to cram two movies worth of traps into a single one, and then strip the story out to a bare minimum... whatever the case may be, it was a devastating blow to anyone that enjoyed the franchise for its complicated story, complex characters, traps with metaphorical and emotional weight, and suspense. saw 3d was the most basic bullshit they could have pulled to appease the people that just watched the trailers for the movies and thought they were just about the blood and gore and traps. It was offensive to me. All these years I had been defending the franchise, saying, "It's not about the blood and gore. It's about the characters and story." But saw 3d completely validated the detractors, and that pissed me off so much, you have no idea.
    Anyways. Upon hearing of a new film, I wasn't terribly surprised, but I was frightened. Not having Melton and Dunstan back to write, none of the previous directors to film it... Looking at the crew compared to the previous films, it really does feel like a skeleton crew of what used to be. You of course have the big three producers, Koules, Hoffman (RIP), and Burg. And the executive producers of course (Wan, Testro, and Whannell). And the composer and editor are the same people as usual (A little surprised Greutert returned given the drama that occurred after SAW VI). On paper, it looks like someone is trying to embark on an old ship but with only an infinitesimal fraction of the original ship's crew.
    The fact that the movie was apparently shot in October last year and we didn't see any official footage from it until, what was it... July this year? That was a terrible sign. And the lack of marketing up until the release today has been discouraging. 9/10 people I talked to didn't even know a new SAW film was coming out, and this is as of the last few days! It's insane. I feel like they are really trying to make the movie fail, which is unfortunate. I would love for it to be rekindled as a franchise.
    So now that I'm done with that ridiculous tangent, I want to give my thoughts on the movie: It's not offensively terrible to the morals of the franchise like 3d, but it is probably my pick for second worst SAW film. Unlike saw 3d, however, I am completely fine calling this one JigSAW. I will capitalize the letters. That little note should help you understand that just because it is the second worst SAW film for me, I am still comfortable enough to give the title respect.
    The movie definitely feels different. There are flashframes, random footage speedups, or whip-pans to be found. This feels like a Hollywood production. Which isn't necessarily bad, but one of the things that make a SAW movie a SAW movie is those elements. The music is all over the place. I enjoy the few selections that tie back to old films (especially "Baptism" even if the scene it's used in here is not worthy), but the music very rarely fits what's going on. It is almost like Chucky Clouclou was told to write some basic SAW music and incorporate some of his favorite themes, but he was not given the footage to match it up. It feels like a mad lib, where they just took his score and places it wherever. It works in a couple scenes, but for the most part there is a distinct lack of connection between the visual and the audio. That could have to do with the lack of visual editing tricks seen in previous films, however. I don't know.
    The acting I was actually pretty fine with. I thought it was some of the best acting the franchise had to offer, even if the dialogue was not the best. The guy that I thought I would hate (The one that says "No, that's not creepy at all" in the trailer) was not too bad. And the police procedural actors were all great, in my opinion. The people in the traps were pretty good. Better than I would have expected.
    The story... hm... I will try to not give anything away, but while the story overall is okay and does the franchise proud, I'm not sure some of the revelations that occur make all that much sense. The best way I can say this without spoiling anything, is that the franchise has slowly evolved from really intimate and simple traps that could easily be set up by one person to overly extravagant traps that would absolutely require more than a few people to pull off. JigSAW seems to ignore that sentiment. And they do something that is kind of neat at first, but upon further reflection, it really does not work. It does not match up.
    As far as stuff that happens just in this movie alone, I think this one reeks more of contrived than any other film in the franchise. Like Jeremy says in his review, there are a lot of moments that are precipitated on the right person doing the right thing at the right time. Slightly spoilery here, but how does pulling a tape stop chains from pulling you? How does putting a syringe in yourself stop the chains from pulling you? What if a different person got stuck in the trap? What if that person didn't follow the other person in there? There are loads of questions like there in this one. I know it's something that happens frequently in SAW movies, but I can usually forgive it and don't even mind. But the plot inconsistencies are definitely more apparent here than before, I can tell you that.
    I echo my friend's thoughts that JigSAW does not work for the franchise as a whole, and it's best to view it as a competent attempt to bring a fanfiction to life. He hated it, I did not. I think there are things to enjoy in this movie. But a lot of the stuff that happens as far as things connected to the franchise, does not work at all upon closer inspection. But I do not share my friend's animosity towards it.
    This got a little long-winder, sorry... But thank you for reading!

      @lancescreepyreading Před 3 lety

      I do agree that some things that happend are very convoluted especially with how the traps are set to go off and stop. But I enjoyed the movie for what it's worth. It's a very confusing film when trying to piece (ha get it?) together the story. But at the end of the day it still felt like a saw film to me. Honestly, I feel like it's one of the better saw films in the franchise but not the best nor the worst in my eyes. But your thoughts on it are interesting. Well put man. Well put.

Its not the rating that matters, it’s the review,” and I honestly thought, wow that actually makes sense. As in, I get excited for things with a few good ratings, but then never really focus on the review sometimes, and then when it’s time for me to get personal with the movie or game, it’s got things numbers/ratings can’t really to you. • @dennett316
      @dennett316 Před 6 lety +75

      The "mystery" revolves around a bunch of ludicrous twists for twists sake and lots of dumb character motivations. The movies were heavily marketed around the traps, there's no getting away from it. They sold this shit based on the gore and the imagination of the traps...the fact that they were ludicrous didn't matter. The fact that the plots intertwined and overlapped in ways they realistically shouldn't have done due to Jigsaw's near God-like abilities to predict and know so much about so many people...it makes the "mystery" pointless because the shit that happens doesn't need to make sense, it just needs to be a twist or a reveal. That's not a good mystery, it was all about keeping that money train running, and that was done with the traps and gore. Like it or not they are, and always were, the point. No matter how deep you want to try to pretend it is.

    It's funny - Cause I've never seen a Saw movie before this one, mainly not a fan of the torture porn idea, But I walked away really enjoying this one. The execution was mostly predictable, the characters aren't really likeable, but I was still intrigued with how they were going to pull it off. I'm actually going to go back and watch the older ones, cause my homies tell me they're even better.

    To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Rick and Morty. The humour is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the jokes will go over a typical viewer’s head. There’s also Rick’s nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation- his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these jokes, to realise that they’re not just funny- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Rick & Morty truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn’t appreciate, for instance, the humour in Rick’s existential catchphrase “Wubba Lubba Dub Dub,” which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev’s Russian epic Fathers and Sons. I’m smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Dan Harmon’s genius wit unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools.. how I pity them. 😂
    And yes, by the way, i DO have a Rick & Morty tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It’s for the ladies’ eyes only- and even then they have to demonstrate that they’re within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand. Nothin personnel kid 😎

      Dalyl Lachkar he’s speaking the truth. Rick and Morty is for the higher class of society. It takes hours to understand one episode for most people because they just can’t understand the clever humor . Rick and Morty is 10 years ahead of everybody , and it’ll be remembered as the first show to achieve perfection. All thanks to Dan Harmon’s original ideas and high IQ.

    Fantastic review as always Jeremy. This film was an interesting experience for me. I realize there were a lot of problems. (The performances were pretty dull, the detective element of the film was by far the most boring part of the movie.) And the traps weren't really all that interesting to me, save for one. The most enjoyable part of the film for me was definitely the twist at the end of the film. I didn't see it coming and it brought a big smile to my face, as someone who has likes the previous Saw films. I also gotta commend the cinematography for looking different and not so grungy as the previous Saw films had. But as before. Great job with the video Jeremy keep pumping out the great content.

    I have an idea for a Saw movie. Police or other people discover other Jigsaw traps and have to dismantle, as it turns out Jigsaw just made a whole bunch of traps. But the thing is, these traps are still dangerous, but over time they get faulty and don't work as well. People get caught in them, but they're not in the position the trap was meant for (like someone's arm gets caught in a leg shackle) and they have to get out of them in a way that the trap wasn't meant for. Might be an interesting and different idea.
