    MAHINDRA UPDATE - Roothy
    Mahindra testing one year later!
Righto, we've done a few things to our Mahindra Pik Up - still lots more to go! - and used it for what we intended a bit too this last year. It's only got 25,000km on the clock but we're really enjoying it. Anyway here's a clip that explains some of what we've done - and there's another on it's way that's got more details on the modifications, including the power upgrade, and my association with the new Ryebuck products that I'm involved with.

There is something very refreshing about a person who does not engage in the Toyota vs. Land Rover/other manufacturer nonsense. The best vehicle is the one you choose. I hope you both continue to enjoy your travels with your Mahindra. It certainly seems to be bringing you much joy already in getting you to the places you want to visit and enjoy. That, at the end of the day, is what is important.. Safe and happy journeys!

The Mahindra is looking great and nice to hear that it's holding up well.
My Highlux suffers the same drop in fuel economy when traveling over 90kph.
One thing about "wind resistance" is that when you double your speed, the resistance doesn't double, it quadruples!
That's why the fuel economy suffers at higher speeds.
Anyway, who wants to travel fast, you miss out on the views when you do.

Thanks Paul.

Looking good. I know what you mean about rigging up something that works whilst waiting to discover a good permanent solution. Painted steel wheels are definitely better in my book than alloys. If a steel wheel takes a dent which causes air to leak out, you can jam a rag between the wheel and tyre to support the tyre and keep the air in. The same impact on an alloy wheel could easily result in a crack or complete fracture.

Roothy, I recall back in early 2000s you were restoring a old Viscount Caravan. What ever became of that project? I recall laughing to myself when you kept referring to Karen as the "Handbrake", always holding you back. Loved it.
Aside from that, I have to say you couldn't have found a better camp to settle in and explain your choices, then kick back and soak up the location, impending sunset, but primarily what a location to snuggle up, yeah been there done that too 😆, K'gari west coast, yeah!
Now I'm sorta gobsmacked you are having difficulties determining how you want to set this thing up.
I'd thought a guy with your experience would have had a grand plan prior to selecting your truck.
You would have some of the best contacts in the business, why not utilise them.
In regard to batteries, charging etc. I'm a fanatic of Itech lithium. Why, well it appears to be really good product at an affordable price, something Joe average like me can afford. Have them in the Patrol, 3 X 54 amp (162 amp) auxiliary, 1 X cranking/winch, 1 X 120 amp in caravan.
    Yes they are affordable.
    You should approach them.
I'm a RTT convert also, it is truly the way to go, so simple to setup, pack down. Takes the drama out of camping, crawling round, rolling/folding, lifting, storing etc.
We selected the press button Bundutop as we are aged & wanted truly easy. Push up button, 18seconds it's erected. Likewise, press down, 15 seconds, stop, tuck in exposed canvas, press down, latch up, drive off, can't get any simpler than that.
So pleased to see you back, have missed Mahindra updates.
    Keep these up, regards.

G'day Ian - funny thing was by the time I'd finished the Viscount the family had grown up and there wasn't room for me! So I had to swag it under the awning. We sold it locally and put the money into a Trackabout camper which did great service until all the kids were sleeping in their own swags - Karen and I aren't vanners, we like to camp real bush and like our camping as camping. Re set up - don't be gob smacked, I've neve set up a new vehicle, just built my own stuff and then copped whatever sponsors were giving away - so this time around I'm taking my time and looking hard at all alternatives. And right now, having been downsizing from the farm, I needed tray space as much as anything. So once we're thru all that I'll get it sorted - but slowly, because I don't o anything in a hurry, apart from beer....
The Handbrake says hello - it was all her idea to be honest....

@@JOHNROOTHROOTHY Oh, wasn't aware of moving, guess some things just aren't shared.
Why did I remember the caravan build? Well I was a caravan salesman, hence had copies of caravan magazines to peruse to be sure we kept up-to-date with what was happening in the industry.
Initially that's the only way I knew of yourself, the DIY Viscount caravan man. Old Viscounts were so well built, aluminium frame just lasted.
(We used to supply Coromal Caravans to Isaac Boaber to do reviews on).
With time I learned you were a fanatic 4WDer, hence a new reason to follow you.
Your selection of a Mahindra has many people scratching their heads, but I can see merit in your choice.

Maybe check with Andrew St. Pierre White on what he did with the LC 79 Dream Tourer build and you can adapt that idea for the Mahindra.

Hey mate, great to see what you have been up to.
I'd hate to see you fall foul of the new laws that have been introduced, aimed at "influencers"....
Just in case you aren't aware, you now need to be really up front about freebies and sponsorships etc.
For example, you mentioned that you were approached by the roof top tent mob to get their upgraded model.
It would probably have been wise to spell it out....by stating that either they gave it to you free, or you decided to buy one at full retail price.
The fine is apparently up to $2,500,000- so might be worth knowing the ins and outs.
    Cheers mate,

Hi Roothy, I have had Triton and Ford uts for the last 8 years. I have bought a second hand Mercedes Benz x-class ute with a Nissan diesel. The Merc is wider the Navara so you can lay a palate down on the tray. The Merc also has disc brakes on rear, shockers rather the leaf springs, more functions like hill decent, cameras all around and a 5 star safety rating. I bought it from business chap who lived in Newcastle. Original cost 70 k and I 35k only 4 years old. Now they don't build MB ute any more, I think it is a collection item 😀
Hope you ute is reliable, I have herd shocking stories about GWN utes failed at 100k .
    Best regards Ray

G'day Roothy, great truck. If you have a "smart alternator", you should be running a DC to DC charger between your main and auxiliary batteries otherwise you could cause damage to your alternator. Hope not telling you what you already know. All the best on your next trip

New alternators have electronics(voltage sensing) built into them and they can burn out if there is too much load and battery stops charging. The dc to dc chargers have the smarts to protect the OEM alternator. I'm just going by my experience with Isuzu utes

    • @baronvonaux8294
      @baronvonaux8294 Před rokem

@@JohnLevitz sorry mate, not sure where you heard that but there’s no risk to the alternator. The issue that exists with smart alternators is that they tend to drop down to 12.7 ish volts which is generally not enough to trigger a voltage sensing relay or the DCDC charger inbuilt battery protection. Simplest permanent solution is an ignition signal wire to the DCDC, but you get the same outcome by turning on the headlights if prefer manual control or don’t want to wire in. DCDC chargers provide no protection to the alternator, not that there’s anything to protect it from.
