    After many years of high quality consistent playing, going up against so many diverse and challenging opponents (especially the Egyptian 3 being Farag, Shorbagy and Asal) I can think of no one more deserving than Paul Coll to be world #1 currently!

    The way Coll was bossing the T gave me flashbacks to Gaultier, the French General. He just looks so comfortable on the T, punching balls back with just a little more purpose and precision than Makin. Never seems off balance. The Kiwi Commodore!

    • @ewallt
      @ewallt Před 2 lety

      Indeed. This makes Coll a difficult opponent for Makin because they play a similar game but Coll is a little bit better at it.

    Coll just schooled Makin the entire match, hopefully Makin is taking notes, Paul is like Makin's future self if he plays his cards right.

    I can’t think of a better retriever than Coll from the standpoint of recovery. There are other retrievers that could get to more balls, but in terms of being in position for the next shot, it’s hard to think of any better, except perhaps Jansher Khan in his prime. Coll is almost never out of position for the next shot. You used to see him scrambling around a lot, but now if he’s in trouble, he hits a shot to give himself time to get back to the T. His game is much better integrated than it used to be.

    Coll and Makin have a similar style of play, but Coll just that much more complete. Do think that Egyptians have a better chance of upsetting Coll's play. Can't beat him with athleticism, consistency, and line and length.

    • @123Jacktu
      @123Jacktu Před 2 lety

      They do the same but coll just a bit better overall, particularly on the attack.

    • @PrashanthRaoNDZ
      @PrashanthRaoNDZ Před 2 lety +9

      Someone like Asal or Ibrahim have better chances of beating Coll than Farag (doesn't attack or speed up the play the way Asal and Ibrahim do) or even Shorbagy (Mohamed simply can't keep up with a player like Coll anymore who's a physical anomaly but unlike Makin, has a much more precision and consistency to his game making him a complete player through a different route that majority of Egyptian players take.
      This is all so good for the sport developing different play styles to reach the top, there will be much more diverse pool of players in the top in the coming years.

    • @andrewcutler4599
      @andrewcutler4599 Před 2 lety +2

      @@PrashanthRaoNDZ I definitely think Farag can raise his game and be better than Coll. Farag has spent so much time optimizing against the top Egyptian players, give him some time to learn Coll's improved game. With his fluid movement he spends less energy, can actually keep up with Coll. And when he does control the game he has a lot of attacking options. Better at switching things up than Coll IMO
      Do agree it is wonderful for the sport (even if Coll's style is comparatively boring). Variety is fun.

    • @PrashanthRaoNDZ
      @PrashanthRaoNDZ Před 2 lety +1

      @@andrewcutler4599 Yeah for sure, not just Farag but all top 5 players keep/need to adapt according to newer players, conditions and Ali thrives at it.
      When Asal jumped into the scene most players were not prepared for that kind of athleticism, accuracy and speed, but now Ali, Coll, Momen, Elias etc have adjusted to match and hold there own against, only time before Ali or someone else decodes Paul's weaknesses, its a dynamic game!

    Paul Coll is playing beautiful squash. He is not hitting outrageous winners. But playing beautiful error-free squash and moving his opponent around and in to submission. His lobs are the best I have seen. He uses it to best effect almost as the winner in many cases. Need a change at the top from the Egyptian stronghold. That will be good for Squash in long term.

    • @andrewcutler4599
      @andrewcutler4599 Před 2 lety +1

      He's more of a threat than Coll was a couple years ago... at 27 years old he's still got some years of peak physical performance where he can improve his shotmaking.

    • @B1J0D
      @B1J0D Před 2 lety +4

      @@andrewcutler4599 agree he has time and Makin is arguably the fittest athlete in the PSA. But we've seen Coll do a full 180 on his game that had no threats. Makin seems to not be making any proactive changes to be more aggressive.
      Even just throwing in a similar shot Momen uses. Volley drops to apply pressure and force movement. Right now everyone knows you don't need to worry much about drops with Makin.

  • @sghazi
    @sghazi Před 2 lety

    Coll has come up with his own brand of squash...its more like the 80s squash with advanced movement of today's squash.....he is very unique in his approach....he relies more on not making errors and keep the ball in play and if there is a imprecise shot he covers it with his speed....Makin was clearly frustrated by Coll's tactics 😊

    Can someone clear something up for me? What speed is the ball they play with at this level?
    I’ve watched so much PSA and I always feel like the ball is so much faster (bouncier) than the double yellow Dunlops we play with at my club.
    Maybe it’s misleading to how hard they hit with relatively less effort but that ball comes off the back glass far more often than typical rallies I’m used to.
    Thanks in advance.

    I can't see Coll losing when he's playing at the moment - It must be like playing The Borg from Star Trek - relentless ! Makin looked pissed off which is good because he's still got fire in him but he has the shots and should have really be on the front foot more - he started to move Coll and it unsettled him but it was too little, to late. As a shot maker I think Makin has more in his bag than Coll - but he's got drawn into this battle of fitness and it's just not happening for him. He's a top 4 player but he needs to break up his own rhythm to create something stronger.
