God of War Review Reaction Video from Director Cory Barlog

  • First, sorry about the quality. Shot on my macbook webcam.
So, I thought a lot about whether or not to upload but then I thought of what my son, Helo, is going through right now. He doesn't want us to be around when he is sad, opting to run in another room and yell at us if we try to come in. It has been important to us to let him know that it is OK to be sad, it is OK to cry. There is nothing to hide. I thought I would try to set a good example and show him that papa can cry in front of the world, or at least the 50 people who end up watching this. :) This is for you, Helo. Papa loves you.

After playing Ghost Of Tsushima I'd thought I'd played the greatest game I'd ever play... then I decided to play God Of War 2018 not knowing anything about the franchise or the game other than it was good.
After losing my mother recently the game really resonated with me. I've always had a strained relationship with my father. I always felt like he thought I was a burden or a waste of space. My father meant well and it felt like I was seeing his perspective by playing Kratos. It was like the journey to the peak mirrored my own journey with my father and how we've come to terms with my mother's passing. It was therapeutic playing God Of War 2018. I am glad I played it. It is by far the greatest game I've ever played.

I just recently got a PS4, got a couple of hits w it, Modern Warfare, Uncharted 4, Horizon Zero Dawn, Fifa 20 but then there it was -- God of War. I have never, ever in my life been so happy to stay away from any gameplay/story videos, for over a year. What an amazing, amazing experience, not just a game, but an experience.

This is what we as gamers need more of. Developers who make a game first, and pour their heart into it to sell it as just that. A game they hope we love as much as them. While the number of publishers that start with the "How can we make as much money as possible" mindset grows, I'll be paying extra close attention to companies like this. Don't sell me loot boxes... sell me something you love.

Cory has talked at length about this, but as someone who has worked on both critical and commercial successes and failures, he says the difference is rarely on how passionate the developers are, but rather time, budget, the idea itself, and a thousand other factors that are impossible to predict. That’s why even after playtest after playtest, he didn’t know the game was going to do well, and that’s why he cried when he saw it did.

I doubt it’ll mean as much. Part of the reason Cory was so emotional here was because Sony Santa Monica was effectively banking on this game for their company to survive. Cory basically had a fan base, a corporation, a talented studio, and storied gaming legacy to appease with GOW 2018 and there were multiple times when he wasn’t sure it was going to come together.
Since the first game was such a resounding success, I suspect he’ll be pleased with a sequel ostensibly doing better, but I doubt it will mean quite as much. People are expecting greatness from the sequel, but the blueprint has already been laid. Here, Cory was a trailblazer.

People who say Rockstar put in more work in RDR 2 than Santa Monica need to watch this dog. Cory took a massive risk with taking a franchise which lets be honest was dying down and the only people playing were hardcore fans, and complete 180'd a franchise and somehow made a classic PS exclusive even better. I mean RDR 2 had a formula of success and took the best parts that made RDR amazing to next level with its new engine. Cory literally had to come up with a new story, characters, world, setting, gameplay, graphics, look, etc. I mean the only thing this new GoW has in common is its brutality, Kratos, and Kratos past.

@@waltershontz591 I'm not saying RDR 2 was a walk in a park, what Rockstar did was AMAZING! But a lot of people acting like GoW was easy since it's a linear game. GoW brought the companion AI system to the next level. Atreus never felt like a pain or a bore, and was vital to beating certein enemies. The combo and plays you can do with him as you progress really makes you feel like he is growing along with the journey. I mean to literally start from scratch and take this leap. I mean so many ways this could've back fired. They couldve chosen the ez path and just reshoot another GoW and make a quick buck off their fanbase, but to 180 a franchise, if it fails not only do you not have the casual market, you also lose the hardcore as well.

Until last week, I was completely unfamiliar with God of War. A week later and I've just finished this amazing game. Wow, just wow! As a huge Red Dead fan, in 2018 I couldn't believe how another game took Game of the Year. My fault for taking 2 years to finally play and see why but everything makes sense now. What a masterpiece, sir! Can't wait for what's next!

You and your team did such a fantastic job that getting the platinum trophy in the game was one of the easiest for me, not because it was a super easy game (F the Valkyrie Queen...) but because I couldn't stop going back to it's beautifully crafted world and story, even years after it's release. Fantastic job to all of you.
May the Triforce forever be with you all.

Dude the game is slated for a holiday 2021 release. Spiderman: No Way Home comes out this holiday as well and the trailer hasn't dropped. Corey and his team DO NOT go against the guidelines they set for a release, why do you think he was so nervous and conflicted about GOD OF WAR 2018. We will see God of war Ragnarok at E3. Sony might not be doing an E3 but that doesn't mean there won't be a showcase of new games coming out. Sony will show off games. But will not risk the a full blown operation such as E3 so soon after this pandemic is coming to a close. My uncle works for Sony and this is somewhat the answer he gave me
If you are reading this. I really hope you are doing ok. Life can be a drag. Just know that it gets better as long as you have that drive in you to keep going.
