This year (2019) was kakaposâ best breeding season ever-over 75 birds were hatched! That brings the population over 200!

Vlaw Kakapo are quite fascinating they have some quite odd behavioral differences from other bird. You essentially made this judgement off of it walking towards some food in the guys hand and called it boring from just that, unlike what youâd expect they still display a high amount of intelligence. Iâd take a kakapo over many other parrot species not because itâs rare but because of its behaviors. That essentially molds how someone will choose an animal.

Animal personalities are usually more visible once you get to know the animal but just looking at this chunky bird heâs full of personality

I just found out about this animal yesterday and its already my favorite animal.
I just discovered the kakapo and so hope they can save them from extinction. They are so adorable.
There are no words for the 'visual calories ' i just witnessed. So precious..so sweet . You mister are pretty special too. You both are so fortunate to have met each other.
I normally don't agree with any type of captive wild animals but this is unique.

darren snook New Zealand was basically the land of birds, having all niches of wildlife being filled by them other than fish, that's a lot of species, then people came along with cats, opossums, skinks, ferrets, cows, and otherwise and took most of 'em out. It truly was a beautiful place. Look into how dominant the birds were for a real spite of depression.
Yeah NZ had almost no mammals, only birds taking all the niches until maori came less than 1000 years ago.

They a lekking species. The females only mate with the males and then leave them to raise the chicks on their own. They do not form pair bonds...

I really wish it wasn't illegal, but it's good it is. There are under 200 kakapos on the entire planet. They're only found in New Zealand

These animals have been intelligent for millions of years longer than anything resembling humans have even existed. They are every bit as self aware as we are, and have earned a much larger piece of chicken at the dinner table than any of us can claim.
Not intelligent, but existing in an environment that doesn't have predators. But since we introduced them they started to get close to extinction

Some fun facts for my fellow kakapo lovers. Every bird has a name - at the start they were usually given names in English and sometimes named after important people - for example, there's one called Attenborough but, now they're usually given MÄori names. They 'boom' when they're looking for a mate - Male kakapo have a large air sac which they are able to inflate to make their loud booming noises. They're the only parrots with these sacs and these capabilities. If the air is still enough, the sound can be heard from as far as 5 kilometers (3 miles) away. They have their own special smell - Kakapo have kind of a musty smell, especially when they drop their feathers. Biologist Jim Briskie of Canterbury University in Christchurch, New Zealand, told National Geographic that kakaopo smell like "musty violin cases." Others have said that kakapos smell kind of pleasant and even sweet. TerraNature describes them as "sweet smelling like honey or flower-like." Having such a distinctive smell makes it easier for the birds to find each other. But that's why it's so easy for predators to find them too.
