- Here it is! I was asked numerous times about showing what I carried on trail this last summer on the PCT. My gear absolutely changed slightly as the trail went on, but most of my core gear stayed the same. What was shown in the video was mostly what my kit looked like for the majority of the trail.
My camera would not focus when I brought various items up close to the camera, I apologize! I hope the lack of focus on some items doesn't affect your enjoyment of the video.
First thought: HEY THATS IRISH FROM THE ELINA VIDEOS!!
Second thought: Hey I like Irish’s videos too, nice!
I can't believe you just glossed over the cold soak jar like it was NBD. How about a video on "finding the perfect cold soak jar"? ❤️
P.S - MISS YOU ❤️
Next video from Irish- my journey and fulfillment in cold soaking. I miss you!! I want to skip a week of work and come to NZ...
@@paulborash409 YESSS.
Can’t beat Cold soaking for lunch.
@@paulborash409 You need much more than a week in NZ!! Try a year. 6 mo. at the least! I was there two + years and still cry when i think about having to have left. (And I now live in southern Oregon near Ashland and Crater Lake)
Love your calm voice - could listen to it for hours :)
Thank you :)
the BEST what to pack video I've seen. And best presentation also simple and calm
Most stylish man of the 2019 class! Go ☘️ Great post.
What a great idea, a cold soak jar! Something so simple, yet so ingenious, never even thought of it.
Great video. Thanks for sharing your gear setup.
Nicely done: lots of valuable information
Looks like a great setup!
All that stuff in one backpack! Very impressive.
Great video! Thank you for sharing, lots of great info.
Nice job. I respect the amount of time you must have spent to dial it all in.
Nice job..simple and efficient
Nice content man, thanks. Great gear.
Thx for the excellent video. Incorporating many of your ideas into my setup as I whittle down my base weight. XRay
Enjoy watching this ☺️👍🏻
Great video. You hikers have gear down to a science.
Thanks for sharing, great to get an idea on how to prepare.
Of course, hope it brought some value to you!
@@paulborash409 Absolutely, really clear presentation of your setup. Since you mentioned in the comments that you might do a video on your pack, I wanna say I'd love to watch that too. I looked at the Hyperlite website and I'm curious whether you missed load-lifter straps on your pack at all, since the 3400 doesn't seem to have them.
Thanks for this Irish, getting ready to head out myself. Last minute as im downsizing and realizing my osprey atmos 50 is super overkill. Looking at that HMG 3400 as soon as my rei dividend comes in
Great gear loadout. I love my HMG pack. I also have the EE Revelation, and it is great. Well done. New follower here. Crow
Great Video👍
Well done
Thanks for sharing
Some folk take an ultralight umbrella for those downpours that never seem to stop .... Saves getting your jacket soaked through and also offers some shade from the sun. Even useful as a wind break in camp. I bet you could even use some duct tape and a stick to secure it to the top of a trekking pole so that your hands are free ?
Quality Content. 👍😎👍
I too would love a cold soaking vid!
Good video thanks
tyvm for the tips
nice video man! thanks so much for putting it together! I liked the little spoon/toothbrush pouch you made. I wish the products came with it. I'm thinking of maybe using a sunglasses pouch or something for the same thing (i'm not as skilled as you are with sewing :P )
Also, if you find the time, it'd be really cool if posted links to the gear :D
Thank you. Of course, I will update the video description with links.
Thanks Irish.
Great video. Why complicate things? Good job!👍
Very cool. Thank you for creating this. What shoulder pouch did you use for your sunglasses?
Paul nice and simple just subscribe all the best from UK
heeeyyy I recognize you from a certain somebody's channel :)
Mind if I ask what pack you were using?
How many liters?
Great gear list.
Nice vid.....I bought a GG THE ONE. Took it one trip and bought a Duplex. I am only 5-8'' and weigh 145 and I thought THE ONE was too small. Glad it worked out for you.
Oh very interesting. Yeah I felt like it was very spacious for what it was! I am 5'11" ish and 170 lbs. I am actually planning on trying to switch to a smaller, lighter shelter for future hikes. How did you find it to be to small exactly?
Hi Irish, thanks for the great review. Just wondering if you had any thoughts regarding getting the 2400 over the 3400. Did you find it handy to have the 3400 for the longer carries over the Sierras etc? Thanks in advance :)
How did the Gossamer Gear The One tent fair above treeline(like in the Sierras)? Was it comfortable?
Great video Paul. When did you start and finish the trail?
Started april 25th finished September 11th.
Hey Paul !! What kind of tent did you use on the PCT? Thanks :)
Did you use the strap system with the revelation or did you just roll with it
Love the video, I’m sure I probably missed it but what pack is that?
Thank you! It's a hyperlite mountain gear windrider 3400. I intend on making a video about it in the near future!
Also, do you just pick up TP as you run out? Thx!
Great video! Where did you get the shoulder strap pouch that you used for your sunglasses?
I made the stuff sack out of a pair of swimming trunks. And the sun glasses I got on craigslist!
@@paulborash409 Lol. Nice!
Wow...you're hard core! So a T-shirt, fleece and rain jacket that wets out in a downpour is all you had along for your upper body? What was your back up plan for if you got soaked and hypothermic...put up your tent, strip down, put on your sleeping pants and socks and crawl into your quilt shirtless? Honestly not trying to be facetious at all, I'm seriously curious. What was it like in northern Washington? That can get pretty cold, wet and gnarley (somewhat) like the Sierra Mts too. I don't think I would be comfortable with that spare of a "closet," but I'm trying to learn and stretch my comfort zone whilst staying safe. The older I get, the less I want to carry! So can you elaborate? Much obliged!
I mentioned in the video that I didnt include every piece of gear I carried on the entire trail, as what I included was what my kit looked like for most of the trail. I got rained and snowed on more in the desert than I did in WA, and just had the kit shown and was quite fine. Just had to plan things out more. Got maybe a little wet and cold at times, but never felt unsafe. In Leavenworth, I picked up an emergency poncho. Though it was fragile, it kept much more dry.
@@paulborash409 Very good! BTW, when you sent home your warmer gear from the Sierra did you have the option of having someone send that back to you if needed or would you have had to buy them again?
He said Patagoia ultralight jacket for first 1k miles, swapped for Melanzana for remainder.
How much did your total pack weigh including food and water?
Thank you for sharing.
I missed the name of the backpack, sorry. Could someone tell? Thank you.
I'd love to get details on the tooth brushing powder you've made!
The backpack is the Hyperlite Mountain Gear Southwest 3400. The tooth powder was actually found at a heath food style store.
All of the seat pads you’ve lost are now on the PCT 👍
No not necessarily.
"wear at your own risk to be seen as a tReNdy individual" idk why I found that so funny xD
Good thing to know for extra bad pain, try taking Ibuprofin (Advil) and Naproxin Sodium (Aleve) at the same time.
Taking 2 NSAIDs at the same time is not a good idea. Take acetaminophen (1gm) w/ ibuprofen (600mg) for moderate pain not controlled w/ ibuprofen.
Hello! What camera did you bring for the pct? :)
I only watched to see what trail shoes u wore!
Great setup, just wondering what temperature rating the quilt has?
I saw that it was a 10-degree quilt. :)
Nice layout. What is the washer for in the first aid kit?
Rubber washer is spare for Sawyer Squeeze water filter.
What was your average base weight? I looked through the comments, but couldn't find anyone else asking. Would love to know! Nice video!
Thank you. Average base weight was approximately 10.5 pounds. In the sierras with all extra gear, I would guess maybe 15?
How tall are you? Did the normal length neo air ever feel too small?
Did you not have a down jacket for the sierras?
Thats right
What size pack did you use?
Could you tell me the name of the zippered stuff sacks?
PCT are closed now 😭
How tall are you? I'm 6'2 thinking of the one. How did it do in the rain and wind?
I have The One and I'm 1,70 meters (no idea how much that is in feet and inches but definitely shorter than you) and on my x lite sleeping pad the footbox of my quilt sometimes got wet when it was raining (or from heavy condensation) and windy bc it pushed the tent down on my quilt.
Maybe it would be better when using a z lite or similar thin foam pad because you'd be closer to the floor of the tent and not 2 inches high on an inflatable pad.
It's a great tent, I'm just not sure if it'd be as good for someone significantly taller than me!
What did you use yo cook with?
So no puffy at all? Even in the Sierra Melly was your warmest layer?
I started the trail with a patagonia ultralight puffy, and had it through the sierras. Switched it out for the melly in Bridgeport, CA.
@@paulborash409 ah that makes more sense. So puffy no Melly up until the Sierra. Added Melly post Sierra. Makes total sense. Thanks again man it's been great following your journey!
Thanks, Paul! How did you like your HMG 2400?
It's actually the 3400, I loved it. Had everything I wanted, nothing i didn't need. For most of the trail, I was most likely using under 40L, and the 2400 would have absolutely worked.
Paul Borash nice! I have the 2400 and love using it here in the swamps of Florida:)
Oh boy thank you so much for these couple comments!!! I’ve been contemplating which size to get and seeing how tiny yours rolled down to I think I’m sold, because I’m not UL ... yet. Super helpful info! Thanks a million I’ll for sure be looping back to this vid as I collect the last odds and ends for my first thru hike attempt this late summer/early fall!
Hi! Will you be doing any other long distance trails? AT or CDT?
Not in the immediate future, but I do not doubt the CDT may be in my future!
@@paulborash409 That's super cool! I want to do PCT but I have a fear of brown bears.😬😬🤦 But I mean who doesn't?😂
Did I miss a down jacket or some kind of warm jacket?
Ricardo Mehr he used one, watch his pct video is one of the best out there
Did you mention your base pack weight? Thx!
Its fluctuated throughout the trail, but without all extra sierra gear, just under 11 pound base weight! Maybe 10.5 lbs.
Did Elina finish the PCT in 2019?
Yes
When you gonna hike the applachian trail
How did you carry the bear canister with that pack?
I put in inside my pack, standing up, in the center of my pack.
How much did all of this weigh?
Did I miss the name if pack itself?
Hyperlite Mountain Gear 3400 windrider
But the real question is: How do running shorts with a lining work with underwear on a thruhike? Or was the lining sacrificed in order to use underwear? Or did you just forsake underwear for the consistent support of an ever increasingly nasty shorts liner? Hmmm 🤔
I cut the liner out immediately when I started hiking with said shorts, and didn't run into any issues.
@@paulborash409 Figured you must have done so. I'm always overheating on my hikes, gonna follow suit . Thanks!
What was on top of your sawyer and how does that help?
That blue piece is a coupler to connect the sawyer to a bottle on the front end, so you can backflush! I chose to use this instead of carrying the backflushing syringe as this if much less bulky.
Cooking set?
Any tips on packing watermelons?
Hello scott, thank you for the comment. Watermelons are of the most technical fruit, requiring tactical planning if you want to take on packing them on trail. I would recommend de-shelling, dicing, and diversifying load to have the highest likelyhood for success. ;)
Yes! And any tips of meal soaking times? I think I heard you were a cold soaker...?
I've actually dehydrated watermelon. Spoiler: its in the name: it's lots of sugar; think fruit roll ups, is what it comes out like.
I've completed the PCT in 1985 and 2014. I always made it a rule to carry no more than two with you at a time. Place under each arm and use your hiking sticks according.
Did you hang up your food ?
Why carry scissors when you had that sweet custom knife? That seems like overkill. Also I would have went with a lighter fleece like a Kuiu Peloton under six ounces and combine it with a lightweight down that combioned would be about the same weight as the Melly. Or better yet ditch the rain jacket and get a Six Moon Designs carbon fiber umbrella and handsfree kit for the same weight and then just get a 2-4 ounce wind jacket to combine with the above combo. The umbrella would work in all but the highest winds and doubles as a sun shade in the desert.
The scissors offered lots of value for me, for precision cutting I found it to be much better than the knife. I would almost rather carry the scissors over the knife. I have owned the melanzana for quite awhile, and though the KUIU may be lighter, the melly is what I had. Great thoughts though! Thanks for the input.
Are the tights intended as a alternative to rain pants?
No they are a warm layer for sleeping, and cold mornings.
Were those your only pants?
What's the benefit of a quilt over a sleeping bag?
less weight. smaller pack size. more versatile. easier to temp regulate. i'm fine with my sleeping bag, but my next bag will be a quilt
What pack did you use?
HMG windrider 3400
No warm hat, gloves or puffy jacket?
In the sierras I had those, but sent them home in bridgeport.
but what was the pack and what size!?!?!? most important part
Hmg windrider 3400.
"... i don't think the torso length was worth it" just based on your tone, my guy, i'm gonna go ahead and stick with a full length.
Neck gaiter? = buff?
Yep carried one. I trimmed it down from full length.
Where did you get your food bag?
Amazon
May I ask which bag? Brand size model?
@@danaanvari. granite gear zipsack 16l
Base Weight?
Nice calves
That hat looks different ,did u use another ?
Same hat from the trail!
@@paulborash409 thank you Paul 👍
Did you pack a puffy jacket?
I had a puffy, for the first 1000 miles, and swapped it out for my fleece in Bridgeport. I ended up keeping the fleece for the rest of the trail. I personally thought the fleece was absolutely a superior option for my hiking style.
Is the fleece synthetic? What kind was it? I saw the capaline pants , any wool base layers?
@@techguy9023 it's a melanzana. Believe that's syntethic. Just the capilene tights!
you don't even give credit to the pack itself
I realise that oversight now, sorry! It is a Hyplite Mountain Gear windrider 3400. I am intending on making a video about the pack soon!
That has got to be one of the most non-first aid first aid kits I've ever seen.
All thru hikers have kits that look like his. It’s minimalist and they take only what they actually use.
i offer my assistance, i live around mount lassen , and burney. I have a van i can transport ppl or i could deliver a meal or something
What tent did you use?
7:35
Where's the dress?
Bro... you cold soak all your meals... hardcore.
Weren't you cold? No rain pants, or hiking pants; just leggings and shorts. Top was just a Long Sleeve, a Sweater, and a Light rain jacket. It seems like hiking in cold, rainy and windy weather may have been super rough for you.
Thanks for the comment. I found that my system worked quite well. I felt mostly comfortable given bad weather. At the point I was at in the trail in WA when the weather was bad, I was nearly completed with the thru hike. If I was going to be on trail for a more substantial amount of time in cold weather I would have likely added layers. Did not feel ill prepared though.
@@paulborash409 wow! Mother Nature was sure nice to you. When I went out on the PCT in the middle of August one year it rained 3 days in a row and snowed on us.
Way to trendy
Dude, you carry way to much stuff. A sleeping bag is a luxury.
