How I Pack My Bag For Trails In The UK

- Many have asked now, which makes me happy so i thought i would put out a one and done comprehensive gear video (including how i load my bag and my camera gear) that would cater for beginners and experts in this area of ultralight or lightweight backpacking.
i hope its of use to you guys are you can pick up on a few things and or maybe let me know ways i could improve (which i know there would be lots)
Just be kind as i don't a great deal of money to ship on the best and latest equipment.

Definitely cotton pants are a no for sure but can definitely recommend any kind of running boxer. I’ve got some under armour ones but decathlon do some super cheap running underwear for about 3/4£ 👍🏻 both quick dry and zero chafe

Super similar in so many ways! Just a few tiny differences here and there, like 0.3mm closed cell foam mat instead of tivek, things like that. And no camera gear! So glad you carry that, so we don't have to lol
I use synthetic summer sleeping bag. Then compensate with Xtherm.
Mostly works out.

A whopping 1.2kg on the camera alone, us viewers are lucky bastards. Nice gear list, completely agree about the USA-centric content, not to mention the eye watering import fees trying to get hold of that stuff.
Yeah my camera isn’t the most efficient that’s for sure, but I do love it’s hybrid capabilities so I dunno if I’d ever change it

@@lamboways ;) may i ask you why you wash your socks every day even if they are made from merino wool? I thought the main reason to wear these socks is to not be obligated to wash them everyday…
@@Pasequale100 ah, you know they’re ok for the first couple days but they always get extremely crusty and uncomfortable so I do it to reduce my chances of blisters and infections 👌🏼

Nice. Used be agree on the toothbrush cutting but more than anything I find cutting it means it fits into my stuff sack better. Fingers don't tend to end up in my mouth

I have found it really difficult keeping pack weight down, but I tend not to be walking huge distances (I prioritise camping - tent or hammock - over trekking), and am often out in Scottish autumn/winter where heavier hear is a must. As a fellow 6'3" sweaty dude, a link to that shirt would be ace - looks good! Keep up the great work - I've subbed and look forward to more content! 👌

That's what I was thinking. What's the difference? The pack is made in England but it's almost identical to packs made in the U.S. There's some Rab stuff, but the stove and sleeping mat are the same. The list of items are the same. I was expecting a bomber tent and heavy waterproof jacket or something.

Great to see another person thinking about camera gear while doing this a well. I have currently been trying to tweak a camera bag into a hiking bag (The 35L). I haven’t yet come to a definitive setup, but I do think a couple of days with it is fine. I am just like you in that I don’t just want to bring a GoPro or my phone… I often have my camera and if the weather looks good, a drone. Currently looking at a potential extension pack that i could strap to the bag for that little extra room. The peak design clip is an absolute must for anyone who hikes with a camera though, those things are a god send for ease of use.
To note on the camera bag.. I am really starting to realise how little I use the side access pocket (for getting the camera out easily). I worked it well by having the camera out using the clip and where the camera sits, I have my rain jacket etc.. as I will have the camera out + nicer weather or jacket out and camera away.. Downside is I’m sure there it a better layout internally if i sacrifice the access. (Food for thought if anyone else ends up in the same boat 🤷🏻♂️ )
hey :) @@Cowley33 i wonder if using a dry bag over the camera whilst staying on your peak designs clip during rain to help out with storage in the main bag? also, i never know whether or not to get a bum bag

had my atom pack for about 4 yrs now, really recommend them for UK hikers. i'm also of the 'wear high visibility stuff' school of thought, and the nice thing about atom packs is you can request custom colours, so mine is bright orange with reflective piping! 🤣

Watching this in 2024 again, getting close to my dream set up also haha...slowly but surely.
I fancy thing those Atom or GG Mariposa 60L pack but these are so expensive ;/ Maybe later on one day.
Ah yes and you dont have any spare clothes for sleeping etc hmm...I dont think I could do that, my merino leggins, top and down booties kinda saved my ass from freezing at night when was close to 0 outside ;/...but yeah in the summer I could ditch that I guess.
Yeah in the colder months I definitely vary the clothing, this baseline set-up is usually set-up for my ‘fair’ weather hiking trails usually between May-September :)
thanks for the perspective. i live and hike in Israel and cant seem to find any gear reviews for warmer weather hikes.

Just stumbled on your channel via the algorithms...subbed.
Very similar concept in my setup except Duplex tent, 2mm foam instead of tyvek (helps stop sleep pad sliding about too), I do use quilt until winter so also carry OMM Core leggings to sleep in. Just got a new pack from Blind Banana that I’ll be christening on Tuesday & switched from Altra LP’s to Topo Pursuits. Squirrels nut butter for the win if chaffing an issue.

Oh nice! How big is your foam sheet?
It's 2mm (instead of everyone's go-to 3mm) & I cut it to pretty much upper-torso, giving me extra protection for my inflatable mat from hips to shoulders, the biggest weight bearing points & when folded up provides plenty back padding & shape for my pack. I got a sheet from online builders firm for about £6...I'm not paying silly money for a "camping company branded" product that does exact same thing.
@@wishdarkstalkaz4050 oh yeah completely agree, the reason I tend to use Tyvek is because I’m a carpenter and it’s usually free for me to get cut offs on job sites 👌🏼
Tyvek is great stuff...I'm an ex- site chippy myself. Used to use as a footprint when I first got into hiking.
Freeness is THE best price. 🤣
Maybe ask the lads who do the pipe work on site...normally used to give upvc some light insulation or protection. I'm sure they could spare a bit.
Great video! Really interesting to see what you have in a lightweight pack for UK trails - that all seems very practical in terms of the level of redundancy you have bearing in mind the trail types :) Do you vary the kit list much based on the time of year?
Hey :) thank you. My core is very much the same I usually just add or remove layering systems like a merino base layer when colder and maybe add a beanie, or remove the down jacket for hot trips :)
Just re underwear, I recently picked up some Uniqlo sealmess boxers on sale that work really well. They're synthetic so don't hold onto the moisture like cotton underwear.

Consider an Exped Snozzle bag? You would get a triple use item! It will be lighter than your current pack liner (but does the same job), it will then mean you don’t need your Thermarest pump-bag and will still work for your pillow booster too. You do need to modify the valve to work (exped vs thermarest), but you can either just buy a silicone adapter or if you are a cheapskate like me you can bodge one yourself. Nice British take on the ultralight 👍🏻
Do you need the Tyvek for a footprint? If not so much then you could switch it out for some of the 3mm foam pad stuff instead. Makes for a warmer sit pad, will boost your sleeping mat slightly, will help prevent small thistle type air-bed punctures, stops your mat slipping around and will be about half the weight of the Tyvek. Slightly bulkier pack size but has the advantage of being a softer back support in your pack. I actually use mine under the groundsheet like a footprint rather than as a 2nd sleeping pad. I find a piece 500x1500 to be adequate. Toothpaste tablets were a great find too, about 0.5g per day,

For the tyvek sheet I do still use it as a footprint when I’m not on a decent grassy surface so I still find it’s multi use brilliant
Wow, u get ur pack weight right down, me, about 12 to 15kg normally 😢. I do carry a purpose made sleeping bag for my border collie and her food, but I've just bought a ruffwear approach bag for her..basically her own rucksack so she can take a little weight off me. I don't do long distance hikes, preferring 2 night max so more weights not so bad. Good video though and really like the look of the Atom packs
Yeah I can imagine it’s abit more intensive when you’re carrying to 2 bellies!
Also my pack weight is definitely abit heavier if I’m just going over for a wild camp weekend or whatever it’s nice to have those comforts. This is purely my long distance trail rig :)
I loved my Katdyn for the first 6 months or so but eventually it got clogged to the point that it was taking 15 mins to filter 1L and no amount of rinsing or soaking in bleach could get it flowing again. Have switched to a Sawyer and loving it so far. Miranda in the Wild made a really good video about the Water Women of Honduras who manage to keep them working for 10+ years with regular back-flushing, so I'm confident I won't have the same issue.
I do always have the regular sawyer squeeze, I switched to the Katdyn because of how easy I find it… it’s defo slowed up for me the last few adventures! For some reason I struggle finding bottles that fit the sawyer in the UK?

Great video. Seems very light on clothes. I have dry merino wool leggings and top for the evening but I do use a quilt. I’ve also been taking a micro fleece recently to keep warm on breaks so as not to get the down jacket damp. I also carry a wind shirt. I’ve got a feeling I’m overdoing it.
When I had a quilt I used to take a full merino base layer, now it’s kind of useless to me with a warmer bag so the weight has worked out similar + my rain gear doubles as wind protection :)

Great video and some good tips and ideas. But throughout the video i was thinking how does the pack affect the breatheability on your back, and then you revealed how much you sweated!! I had the same issue with the first backpack i bought and soon changed it to sn Osprey backpack with a frame and netting, the trade off of course is added weight with the Osprey but i considered it to be a worth trade off as my back, like yours was like a waterfall when wearing my original backpack!
ive used an Osprey Kestrel in the passed (airspace backrest) but its literally the same for me, i find just being more lightweight helps abit but i suffer even when im not carry a backpack to be honest haha
Good breakdown bud! How do you get on with that tripod, do you find it limiting? I have a manfrotto befree carbon one which is handy cause its full height, but does irritate me having to carry it (in my hand the entire time) 🤣
Hey man, thanks again for watching my stuff :) so I also used to take a fully erecting carbon fibre one also but I usually found I couldn’t be bothered to set it up for shots often so I switched to this little one, it’s super easy to just chuck on the ground or I tactically use a boulder/tree/stile or whatever to gather some height :)

It sits horizontally :) I stack everything like a layered system
And Ive over 11kg base weight(~14-15 total) and just finished walking 150km in 5 days of John Muir Way here in Scotland.
But It also fucked my knee and ankle and need to rest for a week to recover haha...need to change and tweak few things to say the least haha

i think there needs to be a balance between carrying stripping down and carrying luxury items, for me i always just try and carry 2 things id consider 'luxury'.. reason being kind of like you is that i just end up causing injury through excess weight
@@lamboways haha I know, you are right, yeah my tent is quite luxury bigger tipi hex peak v4a 1.7kg total weight with groundsheets pegs etc but bombproof here in scotland...and osprey exos is another 1.4kg...plus other items for hygene and just in case if something brakes lol...but yeah money is another issue I dont want to get those super expensive backpacks or tents like x-mid just now, maybe in the future when I save some more money etc.
I will try my best to cut weight slowly hah

id definitely go for quite airy trail runners like some Altra's theyve also prob help you avoid blisters
I found that merino socks ( I use darn tough) take over 1 day to dry out, even when hung from the outside of my pack, so I have to take 2 spare pairs. Do you find you're having to put damp or wet socks on?
Hey Phil :) yeah so it seems my mid weight socks seem to dry much slower because they’re more dense, but I think obviously depending on the weather and the amount of wind they usually dry by the time I’m done hiking for the day in peak season👌🏼

Oh I’d definitely recommend! In fact I’m planning on making a fully featured video about the atom+ in the next couple months 💪🏼 mines the 40. I spend a lot of the year with it fully stripped down (no frame or hip belt) but it’s really nice to be able to slide those features back in when it’s needed

depending on the trail ill usually carry either a 100g or a 250g. tbh you could stretch out a 100g can for a week :)
Hi, I’m wanting to start this kind of stuff with a couple of my mates and I’m wondering if there are any decent trails you know of which aren’t too long and might take 1-3 days of unhurried walking? Preferably Lake District but I’m based in the north east so ig I’m pretty close to Scotland. Cheers
Hey, I’d definitely recommend getting out in the Lake District. There’s an unbelievable amount of footpaths and hilltops to enjoy around grasmere, buttermere and dereentwater. Gives you a chance to hike up into the fells also :)
If you want more official trails you can always pick up sections of the Cumbria Way or Wainwrights CTC! It’s always nice to plan a start and end point

I'm 6ft2 and use the similar gatewood cape fine. I use a 2nd short pole & guy rope to lift out the head end and it is plenty long enough.

No I generally have just 1 set of hiking clothes and then my rain gear
Exact question I was going to ask. I always take a spare t shirt and shorts or thermal leggings if colder weather. They are my dry clothes and sleep clothes always good to have one set of dry clothes. I am fairly light weight as well 6.5 kg base weight. But good content and what works for you. Just the safety aspect of an extra 250grams 😊

Yeah (apart from my camera) my gear is definitely somewhere in the mid range between budget and highly priced goods. I can’t really afford any DCF equipment so I’m somewhere in the middle
