  • What makes a great drivers saloon? James takes this 1974 BMW 2002 for a spin to see if it deserves to be remembered as one of the greats.
    This BMW 2002 coupe is a head-turning, customised example, which has been meticulously built over a number of years to create a period-correct tribute to a 1970s race car.
    Under the bonnet is a fully rebuilt and vastly improved 2.0-litre four-cylinder M10 engine, fed by twin Weber 45 carburettors, which sends around 160bhp to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission.

    I owned a 72 2002Tii, for the time period it was an amazing car. I worked for a small BMW dealer(at that time) outside of Philly at the time. I purchased the car from the dealers son who was one of the mechanics. The car was Verona Red and he had the car painted Silver just above the trim piece just below the door handle to the top edge of the hood and trunk. After I bought it we added Koni shocks and a larger front stabilizer bar. The car was a real looker and runner for that time period. I would buy another, but I have a very well sorted '16 2 door GTI. I do agree that for the time, just being a stock Tii, it was a blast, also nobody even knew what they were back then.

    I've always loved the 2002. A friend had one back in the 90's, such a classy package.

    I have bought my first BMW.. BMW Z3 1.9 140bhp tuned to 160bhp. As a VAG guy ( previously ) I can not believe how well built these cars are made. Engineering at its finest and the older gen cars age just like a expensive wine. They just get better

      I just pulled the trigger on a black ‘76. A bucket list purchase for me as well. I had a black ‘74 in the 70’s/early 80’s. Drove it all over the country….best car I ever owned. Also had a ‘66 1800 as well. A total rust bucket…but ran well.

    Lovely car, it needs a E30 M3 engine 🙂

    I've got three 😊and obviously agree its the greatest driver's saloon! In the intro you say this car is a tii, but the engine spec you describe is more ti - the twin sidedraught 60's ETCC racers - still great but not the same greatness as the injected M10 (which, as others said, ended-up in early 80's F1 cars). The wheels on this car are a bit mickeymouse, a wide 13" wheel looks great on an 02 with arches, and the Nardi bits likely far eastern fakes, but its clearly a fun package. To really make your greatest drivers saloon point, try an original tii or the original, outrageous, turbo.

      The engine is the same, the tii kughelfisher is better um fuel economy, only.
      On performance there is nothing diferent, but in sound there is.
      Ti is more Rare too, but i agree with you, this car is no original tii.

    It's a bonnet mate.
    It's also not really a review of a 2002 is it?

  • @bmw128racer
    @bmw128racer Před rokem

    If this is a tii, shouldn't it have fuel injection and not a carburetor?

    Not sure that pootling along at low/mid revs demonstrates that a "track prepped" car is the ultimate drivers car. Bring picky, the Marlboro branding is tacky in the cancer-aware era, the front bumper delete with token air dam looks chinless and low profile tyres are not period correct......
