How Amazon Returns Work

  • Returns take a major toll on retailers' bottom line and on the planet, but Amazon is taking big steps to change that. Free returns are now offered on almost all Amazon orders, with a new option to bring unboxed items in-person to any Kohl's store. The majority of returned Amazon items are resold to other consumers or liquidators, returned to suppliers, or donated through a new program Amazon hopes will cut down on waste.

As a heavy Amazon user, I avoided purchasing clothes just out of concern of returns being too much effort. Now that they have the Kohls return option I notice that I don’t hesitate to purchase clothing since they have removed that perception of difficulty returning small items. I also like that Kohls offers a coupon with all returns and I find myself picking up additional items while there. Before Amazon partnered with Kohls, I had not been to a Kohls since the late 90s. It truly is a win win for both Amazon and Kohls.

When working in retail, one really begins to understand just how disgusting, rude and trashy people truly are. When I worked at Gucci, people would buy a shirt on Friday, wear it for the weekend and return it on Monday smelling of cigarettes, alcohol and sweat. One lady wanted to return a headband she purchased 15 years ago, so we had to get out the archives because it was no longer in the system. The worst is a woman who defecated all over a fitting room after we refused to return a shirt. I don’t work in retail now, but when I did, I really began to wonder how the hell we’ve made it this far as a species. There’s just so many idiots out there.

Depends on how you look at it. You got dressed, got in a car and drove dealing with traffic/stoplights etc, walked around a store finding what you want, spent time in dressing rooms, the list goes on. I use Amazon wardrobe. I get to try it on before I buy it and what I don't like goes back in the bag with a provided return sticker and gets tossed in a mail box. It's way less of a hassle than going to the store and trying stuff on. Plus I get to use the availability of the internet with vast options opposed to a single stores stock and I get to do it naked. Capitalism for the win.

My best two Amazon issues I’ve dealt with was,
Once I bought my $250 gaming desk, once I opened the box I was in shock that the back lady corner was damaged like it was dropped on that corner during shipping, so I called and complained to Amazon,
Well they didn’t wanna bother having me return the entire desk so they just refunded me my total $250 and I got to keep the desk anyway, then I used the $250 refund to buy my ultrawide gaming monitor so essentially got the desk and the monitor for that $250
Then more recently, we moved into our trailer house back in May, then we bought a crib guard on Amazon for our now 1yr old daughter and they delivered it to the wrong trailer house in our park,
We had to walk around the park trying to find the house that matched the picture of the house Amazon actually delivered it to, we found the house but the package was gone and no one answered the door, so we went home and called and complained to Amazon, we ended up getting over $200 gifted to us to cover the loss from not getting the item we bought plus extra for having such a difficult experience, then like two days later the neighbor who got our package came walking around the block and found us and we finally got the item after we had already got the free $200 from Amazon lol

I always write a review, especially if the product is good. But on the rare occasion that I buy a product through Amazon and it is poor or the seller customer after sales service is bad - then I write a one star review. Time and again I am told my review is not acceptable and cannot be published. I never use bad language or unacceptable commets. But the bad reviews stay hidden.
I wonder how many other Amazon customers have found this "selective" review policy. Not a good reputation for Amazon to have after all their years of hard work creating the best on-line company in history.

2 possibilities for returns "Wall of Shame". 1) Resell and ship it direct from the local "store" or warehouse. People buying on Amazon don't know or care where it came from. If the return was catalogued correctly eg. "Women's blue blouse size 7" and someone orders a 7 blue blouse, repackage and ship it from the return location. Or 2) set up a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly sale at the warehouse where customers can browse and buy the returned items at a discounted price. Everyone loves a deal. It's not really rocket science. When companies become so large, they tend to forget the HUGE problems are really just a whole bunch of small problems that appear to be much larger than they really are. Simple solutions work for all sizes of problems.

Exactly. These people think it's a great thing when it's about burning money to increase your market share, which is really bad for a healthy economy, your company loses money to supposedly win customers loyalty, just like another scams like Uber, wework, etc. : earn billions in funding in the short term by giving an image of success while you are actually losing money. Of course nobody can compete with the unicorns strategy of burning money.

I buy stuff off Amazon so often they would probably do a wellness check on me if I went a week without buying something. The few times I have had to return something it is usually easy to do. There have been a couple of times that the cost of returning something made it impractical to do so. I am more careful now and I buy stuff in stores that have a higher chance of needing to be returned.

I've gotten several items from "amazon warehouse" that were misrepresented as "like new" or "very good" that should have been labeled "acceptable" or not resold at all due to poor condition. It appears that no one ever actually opens & looks at these returns. So how they arrive at a condition label, I've no idea. I can see how you could just return a box of dirt which then is resold onto another customer as a used item.

for me it's quite the opposite, a few things i got are brand new. like a keyboard piano. everything was in its original packaging, probably a returned gift or buyers remorse. i got it for an excellent discount. there was also a coffee machine that supposedly had scratches, but the one I got was brand new. i presume there were too many of them and they just shipped one from the pile.

They can sell it all if they care to do the work, but intelligent consumers want to evaluate items, and be assured that anything which doesn't meet spec will be replaced at no cost. They can easily start/extend their own auction systems, if they don't want to support competitors, but they'll need to pay humans to evaluate, describe, and handle the items. Open-box auctions are effective.
