    The mega cab actually is 11 inches longer than the crew cab short bed and 9 inches shorter than the long bed frame. So it's really in the middle of the two

      PNWreckage I recently purchased a new '17 mega cab. When washing it for the first time I noticed the alignment of the rear bumper to be off from left to right. The entire rear bumper shell is shifted to the drivers side. I've been looking at other newer rams and have noticed the same issue, some worse then others. Curious if you or anyone else has run into this?

      +kingx37x I had to go look at mine after reading this to make sure I hadn't overlooked that. This is my first time hearing of it and I don't see the same shift on mine. I'll be looking at others on the road to see. Have you contacted Ram about it?

    long bed is a must for me....or should have bought a toyhauler lol. 8 foot bed makes life to much easier to be able to load dirt bikes in the bed, shut the tailgate, then hookup to the travel trailer. IMO a long bed is just much more handy and beneficial. better to have it and not need it type deal.

    Long beds have there uses, I have had both over the years. My current truck 2015 Ram 4x4 6.7 Crew Cab 8' bed dually was bought just for our 5th wheel, without a doubt it's the only way to go for towing. My new truck is 2018 Ram 3/4 ton 6.4 Hemi crew cab short bed because I sold the 5th wheel and don't plan on buying another for several years. What I found during our shopping experience that the 1/2 ton is not near as comfortable at the 3/4 ton and up cab, I just felt uncomfortable, the seat would not go back far enough so we ended up in a 3/4 ton.

    Mega cab and long bed 2500/3500’s really help distinguish the truck from the 1500’s. I ended up going with a crew cab short bed 2500, but I found myself looking at the mega cabs and considering a trade. Maybe when the new generation comes out I’ll consider it again.

    That's true bout the megacab. My crew short bed with a 6.4 Hemi had more payload and slightly more towing but I like how the diesel handles the weight and how front heavy it is. I have noticed I've sacrificed my turns in woodlands hauling wood. Comparing the both of em but all in all I loved both trucks.

    I’ve got a mangled lumbar from an argument I had with a Mack 18-wheeler about 10 years ago. And I stand 6’6” tall. I got the Mega Cab 3500 for 2 reasons. First, the longer wheelbase allows me to hold up for more than just a couple hours of highway driving. Second, if I do need a break, that mattress over the back seat allows me to stretch out for a couple hours wherever and whenever I might need.
    I like that my fuel economy is 35% better with the Cummins 6.7 than it was with the 5.7 Hemi, too.
    Parking? Meh...I just got used to it. No prob.

      +hmglor word on the street is a mega has the same rear legroom as a crew cab! That really surprised me but it's from a guy who builds the cabs in Mexico. He claimed the extra room is all behind the rear seat. Glad you guys love it! My 6'4" father in-law prefers to sit in the back of my truck and says it's roomier than the shotgun seat.

  • @HalfCrazy520

    I just bought a '18 2500 Ram, Crew, Cummins. I really wanted the long bed, but I've been driving Ford's long bed truck for years and, although I'm used to it, I found the Ram's 6'-4" bed much easier to deal with in tight parking lots due to the shorter wheelbase and tighter turning radius... so I went with the short bed. I tow a 42' 5th-wheel a little and a bumper pull a lot, so this is probably better for me. Oh, I love the truck!

    Pull my boat (t-hitch) and lots of ski hill trips. We will be getting some sleds and deck.
    It is a lil bit of pain in parking lots/city etc. with the long wheel base, you just have to be creative. But it's worth it.

  • @claytonblachly4031
    @claytonblachly4031 Před 7 lety +15

    The trick with the long bed and city driving is to go really fast and jerk the wheel when merging in to traffic Ram pickups actually shorten when you do this so you can squeeze into tight freeway spaces. It's a standard feature only on crew cab long boxes. lol

    The other point I'd make about crew cab vs. MegaCab is that the current generation crew cab is really very generous. I had a 2004 Ram 2500 crew cab, and that was more like a slightly bigger extended cab for the rear seats. My 2017 Ram 3500 crew cab has enough room to easily put all 3 car seats in the back and still have plenty of room for my wife and me up front. It actually feels more generous than my previous truck (2003 F-350 crew cab long bed). When the MegaCab first came out, the stock crew cab was still of the "mini" variety, so you could either go with a tiny crew cab or the biggest crew cab available.

    • @PNWreckage
      @PNWreckage  Před 6 lety

      +Ted DuPuis you're absolutely right. There is literally 0% more legroom in the rear of the mega than there is in the crew. I didn't believe it at first but all of that extra room is behind the rear seat.

    • @teddupuis3893
      @teddupuis3893 Před 6 lety +1

      I didn't realize that, but that does make a lot of sense, and makes me more glad I bought a crew cab long bed. I probably would've gone MegaCab long bed if it was an option, though (although the towing capacity might have been that differentiator). I also live on 11 acres and where I live (in Kansas) parking is not an issue.
      I would argue that in reality the parking aspect of a long bed is overblown most of the time, it just takes some getting used to. I've got something around 140,000 miles driving long bed trucks (most of which is crew cab/long bed) and parking has never been an issue, even in New York City (where I grew up). Backing into spaces is your friend.
      Certainly everyone should buy the truck he or she wants, especially if buying new. No reason to spend all that money and not get exactly what you want.

    Hi PNW, great videos, still looking forward to videos 4 & 5 for the liar mpg.
    Beyond that, any videos about the optional Ram Box equipped trucks? I am a week away from taking delivery of my new 2017 RAM 3500 Mega cab Limited with Ram Boxes. I appreciate your comments about the slider hitches which I will be sourcing for my new truck. I will be hauling a 39 foot 5th wheel, and have pretty much settled on the Pull Rite slider hitch. Many say I will have problems with the Ram Boxes while towing a 5th wheel, but I have seen many doing just this with zero issues as long as I take into consideration, the height of the 5th wheel pin box to avoid any possible impact to inside tops of the Ram Boxes upon tight turns while parking the 5th wheel. I special ordered my ruck as well with the new rear leveling suspension. And yes, I opted for the Aisin tranny.

    I've always thought that the crew cab trucks (GM, Ford and RAM) with 8' beds look to be out of proportion. I understand why some guys want the 8' bed...need and function. As I've posted previously my 2015 RAM 2500 Laramie is a Mega Cab. For me, I would never have anything else again. There is SO much room in the back seat that my back seat passengers don't only ride comfortably but they "ride in comfort". That's important to me. I'm 6'4" and 285 pounds and I can ride back there for hours and never be uncomfortable. The back seats recline and there is enough leg room so that I can turn and face sideways if I want. With respect to sleeping back there I can tell you this: I fold those seats down flat and I sleep back there on hunting, fishing and camping trips and I sleep great. I have a custom cut 3" thick piece or firm neoprene that I put down and then a 5" thick custom cut piece of memory foam and then spread out my nice sleeping bag and I sleep like a baby. I also have a nice tent for the bed and I have the same neoprene and memory foam for the bed as well in case I feel like sleeping in bed if it's not too cold. When the rear seats are folded down flat the entire surface is roughly as wide as a full size bed and almost, not quite as long. When I sleep there I roll the front seats all the way forward so there's plenty of space to move around, have a small cooler and use my IPad to watch movies. One thing that I don't like about the Mega Cab set up is that you don't get the same in floor storage bins like in the Crew Cab. There is in floor storage but it's behind the rear seats and not as large or useful. I keep a couple of rolls of toilet paper and a spare pair of jeans and undies in them because I'm a man who has had every kind of accident that a man can have. You're also right about the turning radius of the Mega Cab....it took me about the first two months of ownership to really get used to it and master parking. It turns like a supertanker but, like everything you get used to it. Let me know if you go through with the debadging this weekend. Tom

      +METALITHrevetments That was a helluva comment man, loved the every kind of accident part. The first mod to my truck was adding a roll of tp which is an absolute must. I didn't realize the in floor bins were absent. That is unfortunate.. they hold plastic ammo cans perfectly.

    FYI, there is a company out in Salt Lake City that does an 8' bed modification to both RAM Mega Cab's and Toyota Tundra CrewMax's. It's a body shop and I have the guys card somewhere but basically he removes the 6'4" bed and cuts the frame of your Mega Cab over the rear wheels and then adds a prefabricated steel sleeve which is then welded at both ends. Once the frame work is complete he then installs a brand new OEM 8' bed from RAM. I met a guy who had it done to his 2016 RAM 3500 Mega Cab dually and he raved about it. Apparently there is no sag in the frame because the addition is over the wheels and not in the center of the frame. There is no reduction in payload capacity or towing capacity. I thought about doing it to my truck for about 30 seconds and then decided against it just because I think it would make parking an even bigger pain in the ass than it is now. I'll find the name of the company and post it here. Tom

    coming from a person who has used/owns the Megacab, it is hard to go back to normal size 4 door cab after using all of its class leading features. you said it best, the Megacab option really is best for family/pets, best for long haul trips, and just everyday use. I've hauled plenty of lumber and fire wood and you simple jsut rest it all on the tailgate, or build/buy a tailgate extender for $200 and you get the same use a big 8ft bed.

      I do not know if the 2016 and up have the storage that the crew cab has. I like the 2 storage/ coolers in the floor. Plus It seems much easier to access the extra storage under the seat than than having to slide the seat forward and down just to get to the only storage in the back. The other side has the sub woofer in it. I like storage for small tools, jumper cables and oh yea, cold drinks or food.

    Hey PNW, Mega Cabs run on a shorter platform than the 8' foot beds. Yes, they are longer than your Crew Cab. Also, published towing ratings for a RAM 3500 Cummins/Aisin are way under rated. They will tow way more weight with no problems, and safely. Happy trucking!

  • @1001011100101001
    @1001011100101001 Před 6 lety +1

    For a 5th wheel or a gooseneck, 3/4 ton trucks exceed cargo capacity (pin weight) long before exceeding towing capacity. Especially when considering toy haulers. I just traded my 2017 2500 Cummins (which had 2380 cargo capacity) for a 3500 for this very reason. You might be interested to know that when I was shopping for the 3500, the Big Horn had more than 1000 pounds more cargo capacity than the same truck in Laramie trim. If you weigh your trailer (loaded) and add in passengers, the hitch, etc. you may find yourself over your truck's ccc like I did. Your 2500 is more suited for a lighter gooseneck or a bumper pull due to it's low ccc.

    • @brynwhite5470
      @brynwhite5470 Před 4 lety

      C. R. I ran into that myself. My 13 2500 crew cab has 2400 lbs of payload (ish). My 5er toy hauler is 2400 tongue weight itself let alone the hitch and cargo. Crazy thing is the truck hardly squats. No where near the overload springs. I put bags on just in case but only ended up running 10-15 psi in them.

I am looking at buying a truck in the future and sometimes I look at short bed trucks and feel they look disproportionate with cab and engine bay, or on some trucks just the cab, being longer than the bed. For example I find the crew cab half ton trucks with the short bed absolutely butt ugly because of how disproportionate they look. Well at certain angles I feel that way about the short box 3/4 ton and 1 ton trucks. They just look awkward sometimes, and really the same goes for the long box. So I guess it comes down to which looks the least awkward and the most functional for the individual person.

      PNWreckage Unfortunately the way it goes right now it is really hard to find a 2004-2007 Duramax in the crew cab long bed configuration. And to be completely honest I feel that buying new is a much greater bang for your buck in recent years than buying a used diesel. Right now I'm looking at a 2005 duramax with 70000 miles on it and the guy wants 18k for it. Sadly that is a good deal right now in the diesel truck market. People want an arm and a leg for their truck in recent years due to the diesel and truck craze. It's pretty rediculous if you ask me...

    I can speak for both sides. I had a f150 extended cab short bed and now I have a 2500hd crew cab 8ft bed. There’s days i wish I had the short bed but 9/10 the long bed is more useful. Again I think it depends on what you do with your truck. I’m a carpenter so I use every bit of that 8ft

    The Mega Cab also looks weird and I don't think it adds legroom at all because the space is all behind the seat. I wish Ram would simply make the cab bigger like the F-150 and now Super Duty. I love my Ram but gave up a ton of room trading in the F150.

    Decisions decisions decisions. I will soon be ordering a 19 Ram dually. I love the look of the mega cab with the short bed. And I would like the extra room in the back seat for my Son. But , I would have to get at least the Big Horn trim level in order to be able to get a mega cab , while I was planning on getting the Tradesman. Don’t really need all the other high dollar upgrades , I just want the HO Cummings with the Aisin tranny and a 4:10 finial drive. While I don’t like the look of long bed single wheel trucks , I do like long bed duallys. And , I’ll be hauling a 44’ toyhauler , so max payload and towing capabilities are a must. So , I guess I’ve answered my own question. I’ll be placing an order for a Hill’s Green Tradesman in another month or two. Thanks for doing the video !

    I always thought that the short bed trucks looked out of proportion. Almost like the bed is an afterthought. I had a short box on my 2003 Ram 1500 Single Cab, and it wasn't enough to get my work done. Now I have a long bed on my 2013 Ram 3500, and it works great. Parking can be difficult at time, but at the grocery store, I just park out in the boondocks and get a nice walk. Now I just need to pay down some balance on the note, so that I can get an RV.

I already decided the small box is for me thanks =)

    Having a 2003 Ram quad cab long bed I can agree with a lot of this. The long bed is very stable when towing a 5th wheel and when drifting 😂. I daily drive that truck and I CONSTANTLY have issues with parking as I live in a very urban area. I owned a Ram 1500 quad cab short bed and it is much easier to park and steer. You think the 2 feet of extra bed length doesn't matter but it's really because the wheelbase is extended too, the actual rear axle is moved another 2' about.

    • @PNWreckage
      @PNWreckage  Před 7 lety

      +Eric Reno it's crazy how much difference wheelbase lengths make. I have a 2+2 300ZX and it is much more stable at speed than the 2 seaters, but way less nimble. Thanks for weighing in

    • @ericreno4501
      @ericreno4501 Před 7 lety +1

      PNWreckage No problem. Nice truck btw. I also forgot to mention that the driveline balancing is much better as well in the long bed. My 2500 with the long bed actually has a 2 piece drive shaft and it seems to roll a lot smoother at the higher speeds vs my 1500. I don't tow too much with mine. I bought the truck off my dad who tows a fifth wheel and upgraded to a 2014 Ram 2500 Cummins long bed. I still need to length though when me and my buddies go riding our off rosd vehicles. I can usually fit my Yamaha Banshee and two dirt bikes in the bed alone!

      +Quang Nguyen fair question. When we haul it is often over long distances and with heavy tongue weight. @PNWreckage  Před 7 lety +1

      +AJ Pataialii Hey AJ,
      It was really hard to not get the G56 in this truck. I went with the auto because horses are whiny and the shifting is apparently hard on them. The G56 is a "leftover" from rhe Daimler-Chrysler days and I've heard random reports that they're 50/50 on being either bulletproof or grenadine when you pull out of a parking lot. I have no firsthand knowledge of that happening and would guess that it is likely superior to the 68RFE.

      @vsTerminus Před 7 lety +3

      The G56 has better longevity than the 68RFE, but it can't handle the same amount of torque due to the dual mass flywheel, single disc clutch, and aluminum housing. If you replace the flywheel and clutch you can tune the engine for more torque just fine, but the aluminum housing will bend or crack sooner than it would have at the factory tuning. (For reference you lose about 200lb.ft. of torque with that option).
