      +TheMultiGunMan 'Cancelled' is such a polite term. 'Sabotaged' is probably more accurate. Fox never really gave this show a chance. They shuffled its time slot so many times that it was almost impossible to know when it would be on, and during NFL season it was often pre-empted outright. Then they cried that the ratings were poor and pulled the plug after only one season, in the very middle of a story arc.

It was the series finale and my husband woke up and started screaming to 'save his shipmates'. I asked him what shipmates. He said, get someone in the water to save the pilots. @@youfuckingsuck3000 Not as unrealistic as you're probably imagining. Marine Corp police is that everyone is an infantryman first and Marine Corp pilots are, in fact, required to graduate from the Infantry Officers basic school before they ever go to flight school. That being said, the very idea that there would even be human piloted aircraft 100 years in the future is pretty unlikely. We're almost at that point right now. I do think it would have made more sense for them to be a special operations team of some sort than just pilots.

      @@chardtomp As is in the Army everyone has infantry training and have rifle qualifications. It isn't anything unique. You spend 6-10 Million training a pilot vs $15,000 for one combat infantryman. Also, in any service there just isn't a lot of them. Pilots are a small very finite resource so you're not going to waste them as ground troops. Look at WW2. The Germans and Japanese had more planes than qualified pilots towards the end of the war.

    • @chardtomp
      @chardtomp Před rokem +1

    I always found it interesting that Chiggy normally attacked from behind, taking out one or multiple fighters before they even knew what hit them... not in the fight against McQueen though.
    He approached directly from the front, in full view of McQueen... why?
    I like to think that Chiggy reasoned, after seeing just *one single fighter* coming out, that this was the Chig equivalent of throwing down your handcuff and demand a duel to the death. Maybe some form of respect for a pilot who dared to take him on alone, without any support.

    • @spikeep6141
      @spikeep6141 Před 6 lety +17

      SD501st I think it's because on all of the previous occasions, the fighter squads had been bounced and ambushed by Chiggy Von Rickhoffen, and either were caught completely unawares, or were completely on-edge and half-terrified by the anticipation of if and when he WOULD turn up, and so consequently, the whole squad went to pieces and he was successfully able to maintain the initiative and run rings around them.
      Whereas, when McQueen flew out alone to challenge him, he knew he was out there, because he went looking for him, and knew he had to still somewhere in the area, lurking just out of sight of the carriers.
      A big part of this is this whole Idea of Ace Pilots (like the original Red Baron), that really gets played up here is the fact of their reputation preceding them and the psychological effect it has on The Enemy, which can often be of even military benefit, if it causes wings of enemy fighters to break formation and scatter at the sight of it.
      Chiggy might be a great pilot of remarkable ability, and his fighter invisible to LIDAR but the Hammerhead still has firepower, rate of fire and rate of climb/acceleration superior to his ship, and all of his advantages of radar- invisibility and a faster, more manuverable craft are taken away and negated when faced by an opponent that comes looking for him, and flies straight at him.

    One of my favourite (and most missed) Sci-Fi shows ever. I first watched it on SKY at a friends' house and was then lucky enough to be able to record every episode when at a later date they were shown on terrestrial tv. Unfortunately, those recordings were on VHS and have now been 'lost'.
    I've seen DVD collections advertised, but I'm not sure any of them are 'complete' (it's been over 20 years, but my recollection of the last episode I saw...actually, on reflection I'm going to edit/move this next bit (scroll right down) so as not to spoil things for anyone who hasn't seen the series before.
    Also, to my recollection, there seemed to be two series/seasons, although I ever only seem to see reference to one. However, it's possible that over here in the UK, the series was split/broadcast in two parts, each with a different intro/title sequence (?)
    *** SPOILER ALERT ***
    *** SERIOUSLY, I DON'T WANT TO SPOIL THINGS FOR ANYONE WHO HASN'T ALREADY SEEN IT ***
    *** OKAY, I TRIED TO BE CONSIDERATE AND GIVE PEOPLE A HEADS-UP ***
    West ( together with Hawkes ? ) finds and rescues his missing girlfriend / Vansen sacrifices herself, and an unconscious Damphousse - I think Wang had been KIA at this point; to facilitate their escape).
    My favourite episodes:-
    The one where A.I.'s have taken over a mining facility, captured Hawkes and to buy time he plays to their fascination with odds/probability and tells them to "take a chance".
    The one with 'bad-ass' Ray Butts.
    The one where Hawkes has to cut power to the section of an in-vitro transport where his 'unborn' sister is, in order to save the rest of the ship.

    Always left comparing this alien to "The Red Baron" was a little unfair. Yes during WW1 the Germsns has SLIGHTLY better planes (not by much) and yes Richtophen used that advantage to do aerial surprise attacks from above...but he was also one of the best marksman and pilots to EVER fly a plane from the era. The man who shot him down, Eddy Richanbacher, said as much.
    Chiggy had radar jamming, superior speed and manuverability even for his races' fighters, his fighter's seeming ability to operate alone and away from a BoA for extended periods. A chassis all but immune to cannon fire that could take at least one direct missile hit before needing repairs. The list goes on.
    He was at best a slightly above average alien pilot who relied on his tech advantage...which got him killed once a real ace showed up.

    • @LibJumper
      @LibJumper Před 2 lety +6

      Agreed. Chiggy was closer to Erich Hartmann, who performed ambushes and shot at close range against poorly equipped and trained Soviet pilots (at the time they often didn't even have sights and just drew a circle on their canopy in pen), while not being anything special at aerial combat at all.
      Or disregarding flying aces altogether, Michael Wittman, a Tank Ace who used poor tactics and pranced around the battlefield as he pleased because his Tiger was nearly invulnerable against the Soviet tanks he was facing. Which is why he died to a US Firefly who could actually penetrate his armour.

    • @LtColwtf
      @LtColwtf Před 2 lety +2

      @@LibJumper Minor caveat regarding Mr. Wittmann, he cut his teeth in StuG IIIs and Pz. IIIs, being assigned to a Tiger in 1943. So from 1939 to 1943 he was hardly prancing around battlefields in an invulnerable tank. Far from it, in fact, bearing in mind that T34s and KV 1 and 2s - numerous in the Soviet arsenal - were equipped with better guns and were better armoured than either a 1941-42 vintage Pz. III or Sturmgeschütz. The long barrelled Ausf. F StuG being fielded in mid to late 1942 and the Pz. III‘s main armament never exceeding 5cm, in its medium tank role. In order for Wittmann to get a Tiger - let alone command a force of Tigers - he needed to have survived and excelled in the bloody fighting from 1941 to 1943 on the Eastern Front. Not exactly a cake walk. Allied tankers in Normandy were bloody lucky that the Luftwaffe was otherwise engaged and that air superiority was theirs as a result. Without it, they would have suffered significantly higher casualties than they already did. Against an enemy still mostly equipped with Panzer IVs, StuGs and even some late model Pz. IIIs. The lion’s share of Tigers only coming West late into 1944.

      History has proven it. Even with the most advanced toys of the trade. You are doomed to fail if you make an inferior enemy with superior numbers desperate ... Absolutely taking nothing away from McQueen . His determination was legendary. But at this point in the series Chiggy von Richthofen had to have been stretched thin fighting multiple fronts receiving few repairs if any at all . Especially after his whereabouts were revealed. The intense strain on Chiggy's ship had reached its breaking point. Then a lone Hammerhead arrives ....then leaves the scene with with one and a half functional engines and one more alien debris cloud left behind 🔥💯
