    Thanks for the info JOM. It is interesting (and logical) that Garmin is adding solar to the Edge units. I have a Garmin Instinct Solar smart watch and the solar function does truly add to usage levels. Not sure that I am ready to drop the money to upgrade from my 830 but I do think the improvements are pretty slick.
    Seems to bring the Edge much closer in functionality to its market competitors.

      I have been wondering about those Garmin Solar watches, nice to hear it is working out. Agreed with your sentiments on the 830, I love that device, so much power and functionality jammed into such a small space. Of interest, my original 705 is still kicking along here!

    They've had an option since the 1030 of "Return to Start - Follow Existing Route", which essentially creates an out and back ride from whatever route you've ridden to that point.

    When you migrate from 1030plus to 1040, the IQ plugins works in the 1040? or every developer has to release a new version? I use "old plugins" and don't know if developers release new versions of it....

      Hi Paul, definitely some glare, but it wasn't enough to bother me, other than in really direct sunlight.

    I use the 830. Would like to have something with a slightly bigger screen but the 1040 is just too big overall. I mean being that size I might as well use my smartphone. Thanks for showing the size difference compared to the 830.

      It does! Cycling weekly just did a review and said it does. Essentially it will charge leaving it by a window or something

    The other thing you want to get to protect the unit is a screen protector, just like for your phone.

    Hum...not quite sure. From to Edge 830 to Edge 1040 seems to me like it is not worth that amount of money. Display is huge, software is new but all that metrics I have on Edge 830 with the different view and for me it is quite enough.

      Check out the 840 Solar, similar form factor to the 830, just a little bigger. Less $$$ than the 1040 Solar.

    I regret buying the 1030 Plus back in 2022 without any discount, hard to justify the cost of this 1040, the 1030 Plus is quite devaluated at this time.

      I generally turn the touch screen off in the rain. I haven't had false triggering, but with wet fingers, switching between screens can be difficult at times.

      If I recall, I showed setting up a custom profile. I use that for all of my riding, no matter what it is.

      @@GravelCyclist Thanks looks like the 530 I have has that as well but also have not used, not sure why with Zwift but maybe other applications. Great review JOM, my eyes may appreciate the bigger screen while my wallet may not ;)

      @@jasboehlke Not cheap for sure. As an FYI, the 1040 is also available sans Solar for close to $600. Still not wallet friendly for a lot of folks.

      @@GravelCyclist Noted and my local shop is doing 20% off everything today, Independence Sale so sold. $480 out of pocket sans Solar. Sell my 530 which has few rides for a couple hundred and Bob's your Uncle, $280 out of pocket....how one's mind rationalizes purchases. Will be using the cover and laniard on this bad boy though. Schnikes that was an investment!

    Everyone thinks the metal quarter turn is a good thing. You can make EXTREMELY durable plastic. But the fact is you're now putting a metal male end into a plastic female end. I really wonder if it's going to wear out the mounts.

    why nobody says that if you wear sunglasses(common ithing),is too difficult to read anything in the screen!!!Too low Brightness!!!

    Most important question. 1040 working in rain ? 530/1030 .. nope. Touch Screen not working when I riding in rain, I not say have problem, or have low precision. Its not working

      See review from DC rainmaker - seems to be working ok in rain, better than say iPhone. I also use 830 in the rain and it's working well enough , especially swipes.

      @Piotr - I have a 1030 plus and had a 1030 before it bricked on me (after years of mtb crashes). Both screens work/ worked well in the rain. I think you have a unit needing a warranty claim

    IMPORTANT: The older devices (830, 1030, 1030+) will NOT receive any of these new software features / interface improvements. In my opinion this is a shit way to treat your customers who bought a 1030+ a couple of months ago and goes against the way they have handled updates in the past. Bad move Garmin

      Hello there, I sincerely hope you are wrong, as those new features are very very nice. I've only scratched the surface of everything thus far within the 1040 Solar.

      From what I understand it is a new UI, so retroactive updates may be available longer term but take a lot more programming of code due to different dev UI.
