badass man!
Thanks🎉
No problem. 👍
Nice striper you built. Do you need a bushing for each wheel or just where you welded on the flat steel?
Thanks! You just need a bushing where you weld the flat steel to the tube that holds the 3/4" rod.
Angle of the sun has to be in a prime spot when you shot this video.
Can you comment on how the mower turns at the end of a row? Do the rollers damage the turf while turning?
The striper glides across the turf while turning sharp. No damage at all to your lawn. Your tires will tear the turf slightly if mowing with a zero turn, so be careful there.
Can you still stripe with discharge chute or should you have a mulching kit instead?
Absolutely, I side discharge all the time with this striper.
$195 for just the roller tires? Aint no way
Approximately how long are your mounting arms, the 1” x 1/8” piece of flat steel?
They are 16 inches long.
It does provide very definitive stripes. How heavy is the kit? Btw, you accent sounds like you are in Minnesota area.
The way it is setup it weighs 35 pounds. If you wanted more weight, you could add a piece of steel support between the two attachment arms just above the wheels.
What happens when you turn around on the driveway or sidewalk? Does the striper drag across the pavement?
If you turn too sharp, it will slide across instead of roll.
Is your solid piece of steel tubing that goes through your rollers welded to your 1” piece of steel?
The 1" flat steel is attached to a steel tube with bushings inside that fits over the solid steel round. This way you can slide out the solid round steel if you ever need to replace the rollers. If you were to weld it directly to the flat steel, the rollers in the center would be permanent. Hope that makes sense.
Yes it does - thanks for the response! Like the design and my rollers will be in next week! Can’t wait to get started on making it!
Ok, one more question. The brackets that you made, where the bushings slide in. How wide are they? Did you use 4 bushings, two in each bracket (facing each other), or did you just use one bushing on each (two total)
Two bushings were used. I believe I have a link to the bushings used, in the description.
Just curious, wouldnt it work better if the rollers were not able to spin? It seems it would push the grass in the direction you want, better, instead of rolling over it?
Possibly. But I would think the rollers would wear out quickly and there would be a lot more stress on the lawn mower trying to drag the striper behind instead of pulling it. It does weigh a fair amount which is why it stripes so well.
Seems to work pretty well like he has it.
Where do you get the wheels from?
I get them from Amazon, I do have a link in the description. Watch for sales, they do get a lot cheaper at times.
Any idea if the ribbed rollers would work better than smooth ones?
I think either one would work fine. It's more the weight of the unit then the style of rollers used. The heavier the striper, the more pronounced the stripes will be. Enjoy!
@@DeanoOutDoors thanks, I just know you can get a smooth roller in 12” long so you wouldn’t need as many individual rollers.
Which bushing did you buy? The link in the description didn’t bring up a specific one. I’m assuming you bought a steel bushing to weld the flat stock too.
The flat stock was welded to a larger steel tube. That then has a Hillman 3/4” ID bronze bushing inside. The length of the bushing will vary depending on your own preference and build design. I have just updated the link to the bushings used in this build. Hope this info helped.
@@DeanoOutDoors make sense. Thanks for the update and posting this build. I hope to build one of these. How big of zero turn do you have? I have a small 36” scag and just trying to guess how many wheels I need compared to the the size of the one you built for your size. Sorry for so many questions.
Your welcome! I have the 50” deck. Feel free to ask any other questions that you have. Enjoy the mow 👍🏼
What kind of wheels/tires are these??? I don't know what they are called to shop for them and these wheels and heavy correct????
They are Wobble Roller Ribbed. Here is a link to the one's I use if you want to check them out: amzn.to/3f0AhnC
Do you have a video that shows exactly how you built it?
Sorry, I did not get that on video.
Canadian or minnesotan?
You should build and sell these!
Can you it on a push mower?
You sure can, just be sure to size it correctly to the width of your mower deck, and so it's not too close to your feet.
Where did you get the wheels?
I got them on Amazon. You can find them here: amzn.to/3f0AhnC I also have a link in the description where you can find these and a couple other things you will need. Good luck with your build!
how are they different color what causes that ?
It's the way the light reflects off of the blades of grass, the angle the blades are laying will determine whether it is light or dark in appearance.
Couple of questions? 1) How does it do on hills or diches, when mowing on an angled surface? Will one side be u in the air while the other is on the ground? 2) I have to drive across a sidewalk and concrete driveway while mowing, does it transition across that type of surface ok?
It will make full contact with the ground on hills, if it were to come off the ground, you are mowing too steep an angle and better hold on 😃. You will have no problem crossing sidewalks or your driveway, the wheels roll across any surface.
@@DeanoOutDoors Thank you!
What kind of grass do you have? It looks really nice 👍🏼
Thank you! It is Midnight Kentucky Bluegrass.
@@DeanoOutDoors freaking awesome I was looking for a video like this. I was debating to plant turf type tall fescue or Kentucky blue grass midnight and this video made my decision thanks
Your welcome! You will love the Midnight KBG. It takes some time to get established but well worth it!
@@DeanoOutDoors good to know thank you
Kentucky Bluegrass is a really nice turf. It can be high maintenance, but worth it. I had it for years until my trees got big with lots of leaves casting lots of shade on the lawn. KBG just didn't do well with the shade. KBG loves sunlight, although there are some variants that can tolerate the shade. TG if you have direct sunlight and irrigation, KBG would be a good choice, especially midnight. His environment is perfect for KBG. Man, I miss KGB. I'm mostly Turf Type Tall Grass now.
I don’t see how this design works when it turns. I feel like the force of it when it turns makes it pivot and apply force to pop out the bushing
It's the same design principle as CheckMate stripers. I haven't had any issues with the bushing coming out. I'm not sure that they could, unless you removed the wheels first. Thanks for watching!
If we continue "feeling" instead of thinking, we're doomed.🤡
Could u put a list of the parts nice video
Thanks, I have the parts that I used up in the description.
@@DeanoOutDoors oh I see thanks also about how much does this cost. Also your yard looks amazing!
Thank you! At the time I built it, I had roughly $160 into it. I purchased the wheels when they went on sale and used some scrap steel lying around. It would cost around $250 depending on your total width if you had to purchase everything.
We're did you get the wheels from
From Amazon. Wobble Roller Ribbed: amzn.to/3f0AhnC
what is the exact width of each individual roller ?
23/4”
Where do you get the wheels?
I have a link in the description. Unfortunately, the price of these have gone way up since creating the video.
Where can I buy the rollers
You can find the link to the rollers at the top of the description. Watch for sales, I’ve seen them as low as $8.99.
You don't need any rollers going past the inside edge of the rear tires because the tires themselves will stripe. That would have saved you $40-$50.
It looks like it works great but dang.. it would be $220+ in materials, might as well put an extra $100 into it and buy the big league rollers that are ready to go
Yes, but it was more enjoyable building it then purchasing one. Plus if you have the scrap steel lying around, you really only need to purchase the wheels which cuts the cost in half. Thanks for watching!
What was your total cost on the build?
We used scrap steel so I just needed to buy the wheels. I got them on sale, the total cost was $160. The highest expense are the wheels, watch for them to go on sale usually for $11.96.
How wide is this?
This one is 40 inches wide.
How much do you think it weighs?
This setup weighs around 35 pounds. You could add weight by using thicker steel or adding a piece of steel support between the two attachment arms. The weight of this striper is just about perfect for my grass type.
@@DeanoOutDoors ok thanks. 🙂
Where did u get that 8th inch arms that attach to the mower
It was scrap metal, but you can purchase it here as well 1/8"x 1" Flat Steel: amzn.to/47NIJBa
Would I need a bushing for the way I'm going to do it
Yes, a bush will be needed where the arms attach to the round bar.
@DeanoOutDoors where can I get the bushing from
You can find links in the description for the bushings.
how much does it weigh?
This setup weighs around 35 pounds. You could add weight by using thicker steel or adding a piece of steel support between the two attachment arms.
at 16.00+ a tire you have a ton of money in that setup.....chearper to buy one online
Yeah, these were once only $10 per wheel and affordable. Unfortunately, everything has doubled in price over the last few years.
No mest way to kill time you need to show how to build the dame thing like you have it advertise not how you mow your yard
He did show how and showed how it works in a five min video. Your nuts

I have a great idea that I think will work the best! Use a little common sense and ask yourself what makes our hair sit down? A Comb! So build a comb like structure built at an inward angle so it replicates combing your hair. This should be guaranteed to work the best. When I run a bunch of rubber tires over my hair it does nothing. But a simple comb lays it down.
Lol, great analogy. I've seen a few people using garage broom brushes as their striper. They work about the same as the roller setup, but the brushes can tear and hurt the turf easier.
You spent more building this than the actual kit cost...
It was a bit cheaper, I bought the wheels on sale. But it was more about the satisfaction of using something I built then the money.
but pretty sure the striping kit doesn't work this good wow those are some heavy ones
That's the nature of Midnight Kentucky Bluegrass, very heavy stripes. My front lawn is perennial ryegrass, although it stripes very easy, they do not last more then two days. KB stripes will last until the next mow.
There are 13 wheels, it looks like. From your link, they are $17.98 each. That's $233.74 just for the wheels. I can get my Factory kit for $135. I don't see a savings.
The wobble wheels are now available for $8.99. If you watch for a sale, you can get them cheaper at times. But to me, it’s about the satisfaction of striping my lawn with something home built.
A mower stripes without any attachments, I use nothing but a mower and my stripes look just like that
No they don’t. That’s why stripe kits are made and pros use em.
I've never had a stripe kit on any of my mowers and always had dramatic stripes. I can honestly say I don't know of anyone who uses one. I get compliments on my yard all the time
@@davidharden9410 you got a simplicity?
@@craigbok9889 no, I have a spartan
Unless you have pics, I don’t believe you can make stripes like these in the video with ONLY a mower deck. Yeah I’ve seen some striping but none like these. Pics for proof or it ain’t so.
Those rollers are $25 each! It would have been cheaper to buy a stripper, no?
The price using my link is currently $13.55 each. I bought them under $11 on sale. It was more about the satisfaction striping with something you built then the price of the build.
That isn't tubing. It's round stock.
Yes, you are correct. I was thinking of the steel tubing that slides over the round stock I used to attach the 1" flat steel to while I was recording. Thanks for correcting me.
Where could I get the round stock from
What inch size is that round stock
@DeanoOutDoors what size is that round stock
3/4” plain round.
I like your idea here. I disagree with one thing though. The striper should be wider than the rear tires. It should be almost as wide as the mower deck or blade tip to blade tip if the deck is wider than the rear wheel track. If not you will see the tire tracks.
Yeah that's a no go there bud. The striper needs to be at the very least in the middle of the drive wheels. The wheels make stripes from the weight of the mower already. Your idea would roll the grass one way and then roll it the other way. You are not including the idea of overlapping. Big league stripers explains this perfectly
People that run stripes on their lawn have mental problems…!!!
Thanks for watching, and remember to get Outdoors with Deano.
I see 13 rolls tires 🛞 there not cheap another maybe 100 bucks depending on what zero turn u have safe your self the time n buy the Real Check Mate stripping kit n go I was planning on doing one my self when I price it all out wasn’t worth it just went n bought one from Big lawn league 🤷🏽♂️🥴🤙🏽
I waited for the rubber rollers to go on sale to help save some money. It's more about the satisfaction of striping your lawn with something you built. The Check Mates are great as well, happy striping!
