That one guy brings up a really interesting point on how Koreans can't relate with the film too much but as a Korean American, despite the film being about black people, I felt like I could relate to it very much. And perhaps that's the difference between us. Koreans live in a largely homogeneous society where they are the main heroes, the main characters, but POC who live in America have always been the disenfranchised. In fact, due to the severe lack of Asian representation, from a very young age I was instantly trained to idolize black superheroes more. My favorite superheroes growing up was John Stewart and Luke Cage.
It's really interesting to see a non-American, especially a Korean's perspective on this. And at the same time it's really interesting to see him being up to date on the Academy Awards controversy, and the "white washing" issues. So even though he couldn't relate to the film, the fact that this guy is still aware, means a great deal.

As a Black person currently living in Korea, that was very interesting to hear what was said about Koreans perception of us. I've been that person on the subway who no one wanted to sit next to. I've gotten the stares. If I understood the Korean language I'm sure I would have heard some nasty things said about me from time to time. Being Black is a daily struggle. I get very emotional when it comes to issues of Black people and how we are so negatively perceived worldwide. I am not particularly a fan of superhero films but I was very proud of the portrayal of Black people that Black Panther provided. RIP Chadwick Boseman.

@@tattootony3918 it is very much because we are black if a white person or a non black person sits down in an Asian country of a subway then people would have no problem sitting next to them, it quite odvious that Asian people of every ethnic group are anti-black and the most racist amongst all races to black People. For what we don’t know and don’t care to know we don’t even have interactions with you all and y’all constantly culture appropriate our culture and even go to the extremes to blackfish, no race is more racist to black people than Asians and it very much shows! So don’t think that just because a foreigner that goes to an Asian country will be treated the same as a black person in an Asian country because y’all hav ethos weird obsession with white skin. Asian Boss, the Black Panther movie actually sparked a discussion on colorism in the Philippines. Recently, a Philippine TV show was the subject of controversy for having mixed actors play the role of native Filipinos. Locals argued that if Marvel could effectively cast Black people for Black Panther, why should a show about pre-colonial Philippines have lighter skinned actors? It’s very interesting. The response to Black Panther is overwhelmingly positive & it’s bringing these kinds of discussions to the forefront ❤️❤️❤️ There’s definitely a lot more love for darker skin now. Much love ❤️❤️❤️❤️

I think he worded that wrong. But I get what he was trying to say. Essentially they probably haven’t learnt much about black history and the black struggle in the US and western world in general. Probably just surface level stuff. In history they probably focus on Asian history like how in this part of the world we focus on our own history. Also, the scope of what they are exposed to is very limited. They mostly see Asian representation. And if they are exposed to anything outside that it’s white since that’s the dominant media narrative. This actually really opened my eyes to how powerful the media is. Given that blacks are always stereotyped in Hollywood and those images are sent out, it wouldn’t be weird for people with a limited exposure to minorities to form negative views of a said minority. Yes they can search it up, but most people won’t search up things that aren’t a problem or concern to them. That’s just my two cents and some things I’ve noticed living abroad.

This video is actually what I'd predicted. Anyone other than black people probably will not relate to the movie Black Panther and say "it's not their cup of tea." I also found it interesting that they were talking about the old lady speaking Korean and how they should have gotten someone who speaks proper Korean, this is actually how we feel when we watch K-dramas and/or Korean movies and they pick a Russian or someone who clearly doesn't speak proper English to speak English. Also, when the guy said I think "era of discrimination is over" I was caught off guard because that is the most untrue statement of the year! In the video, other Koreans clearly state that there was some racism and discrimination towards blacks. Remember when they said some Koreans does not sit next to a black people on public transportation and there's the calling of black people "black brother," which the lady clearly said was racist. In addition, it's very sad that it took a movie for people to start changing their perceptions of black people and to realize that black people are beautiful too. Black people are more than just slaves. We are Kings and Queens, survivors, leaders, trendsetters, go-getters, and so much more.
P.S: To those of you who says that black people continues to play the victim, this comment is for you. Black people DO NOT play victim, it is not a role we would like to play. We as black people face discrimination, racism, and colorism every day. No matter where we go there are people out there who hates us simply because of the color of our skin. It's actually hard for some blacks to be black and just because you clearly do not understand what we go through does not mean you can say we play victims.

To be honest, for each race/ethnic group there will be some type of discrimination. Also the point of the movie for you was to entertain you, the point of the movie for me and some other people is much more than that. Again, another point I was trying to make. I'm white but I actually care a lot about black people being represented, I care way more than like 99% of white people honestly. I don't beleive in "race" it's all a lie but not enough people do their research. I'm literally the only white girl I know who is genuinely concerned about how dark skin tones are seen as ugly or undesireable in most of the world, like even in Africa they do skin bleaching. Hollywood doesn't like to cast dark skinned black women, just the lighter ones. I notice this stuff and genuinely care, so I'm not one of those people who is like "it's not my cup of tea" just because discrimination isn't their problem.

East Korea, A lot of black people in the US are often denied their right to due process. There is a prison in NYC called Rikers where a lot of young black men are detained before it's even been proven that they are even guilty of the crime they've been accused of. The detainment of a black teenager named Kalief Browder made this case especially egregious when he was placed in solitary for over a year and a documentary was created about him after he committed suicide. A lot of black people are denied the right to a job just because their name sounds stereotypically black and racist employers don't want to hire black people. There's been little to no justice for unarmed black people who are killed by the police (which started the Black Lives Matter movement). A lot of innocent black people are imprisoned and placed on death row and often, they are not exonerated. Black children are often denied the right to be charged as or seen as minors when they are charged for crimes because white people often believe that black children are never innocent and black children are still being given life sentences without parole or rehabilitation (though this was deemed unconstitutional) for the same crimes committed by white children who often serve little to no time at all. A lot of black people are denied the right to walk around a white neighborhood without being harassed or arrested by its residents or the cops just for being there. Black people are often denied housing by racist real estate owners (like Donald Trump). Little black girls are often denied the right to wear their natural hair in schools and prompted by white people to straighten it or wear it however their white teachers are comfortable with. Black people are arrested/convicted at a much higher rate for the same crimes that white people commit. There's still a lot more that I can list but these are all off the top of my head.

I’m Korean American and it’s so rare to see a superhero movie that stars a POC lead and I felt like it shed a bit of light on the oppression/racism that happens to black people around the world. Wakanda and it’s culture was so greatly imagined. I saw a little black boy at the theater and he was just in awe afterwards. I hope to see an Asian superhero one day and see Asian kids in America also have that look of awe.

That person that said that they thought white people were better looking than Black people is why movies and media are NOT just "movies". It took a movie where Black people aren't reduced to stereotypes and are just being their great selves to make people realize that yes, we have been and always will be just as good looking as anyone else.
Also, I find it interesting how certain questions and requests are asked after Black people have success in something. It seems like every time a Black person (or people) get a little bit of recognition, everyone else wants to basically be like "what about us?" I hope you all wanted an Asian hero before BP came out, and aren't just saying that now after the success of the movie 😒. You all should have been asking these questions long before Black Panther. Non-Black people of color have an elitist attitude towards Black people and I'm sick of it.

The problem is when you see an entire race as ugly and unattractive. When black people (men mostly) are brainwashed into thinking anything other than their own race is better, something's very wrong

Black Panther set the precedent for non-white movie leads, which puts other minorities in the discussion for major roles. Any success for any minority is a success for all.

RNRENTPROMO I think she didn't mean that Lupita's pronunciation was bad because I laughed at the scene too, because she was saying in Busan's regional accent(which shows that Lupita tried a lot for the scene) and that was so unexpected, not because of her incorporate pronunciation. I loved that scene because we Koreans know that English speakers could not learn Korean easily and speak that accurately, even with the regional accent, but Lupita did it, and it was kind of touching thing to me that the actress and Marvel think Korea as 'not just a small country'. So I think the interviewee thought just like me and laughed, because Lupita's korean and her accent was unexpected.

The only way to see foriegner(in detail) is watching a video or youtube. So there can be lots of misunderstanding. As a person who felt discriminated by my race, I hope there is no racisism in this world. Thank you for reading my poor english comment😊

I think Black Panther was a well needed movie, it showcased African culture and black people in a positive light. When I watched it, I felt proud to be black and I am grateful for it doing as well as it has worldwide because it's showing a different image of black people that isn't necessarily showcased in movies and people are quite receptive to it. One of the main reason why non-black people especially those that have never interacted with a black person in real life have such a negative image of us, is because black people are always shown as "gangsters" or "hip hop artists" or criminals or just poor and illiterate in movies and western media overall. It's was nice to see black people being portrayed as equals and not sub-par in anyway to other races.
OT what they said about the "Korean" lady in the movie I thought the same lol. I am in no way semi-descent Korean but I thought that was some of the most awkward Korean I've ever heard they should have just have her speak English lol.

And no Marvel isn't African and the director isn't African but this movie was made from the point of view of a BLACK person which really changed the way people viewed it. As for relevance to real life culture, I really can't say but just look at how black people from all over the world are embracing their African roots through support for this movie. Tbh I've never seen so many people where a dashiki in all my life until Black Panther premiered lol. Now it may all just be a trend and will die out eventually but I see all this as progress.

Obviously if a social issue does not effect you or your people, it's fair that you will not pay much attention to it or care about it. But in the age of globalization and almost unlimited information sharing, to say "after watching black panther I've realized that beautiful black women exists " is baffling to say the least-ignorant is bliss-but yes it's crazy to see how media can change perceptions

I hope you and others pay closer attention in English class where they explain the importance of media and wording. Ex: during a hurricane a news cite called black victims looters for finding scraps in flood waters while white people we're refered to as survivors, the kicker is that this was all in the same area but different captions. Media play is not done without purpose

Even the famous American tv show fresh Prince shows Will Smith telling Carlton he is not black enough wherever Carlton is concerned with education, being responsible with finances. Does being black in America mean be poor and stupid? Clearly they have a point. The entire black identity in the USA is built around glorifying a negative lifestyle.

Icarüs 5440 not entirely true, at least in the American sense. To be cool, is a connotation of maintaining a level head in times of stress or being level headed. This concept was born out of the jazz movement in America (prominently made up of black musicians) when musicians would improvise and anticipate the next step. This had to require an immense amount of clear and creative thinking to keep calm, cool and collected while the music changed in real time. Since then it's morphed and twisted and turned into this amalgamation you see today.

    • @DSan-kl2yc

lizvlx that doesnt mean its remote. That small peninsula holds more people than California. It also supplies the world with samsung LG and Hyundai....just becauss its all the way in Asia doesnt make it remote.

As a person of color in America I would say the ONLY major complaint I had about the film, particularly the parts in Korea were that they didn't pick up more Korean actors and actresses while there. I am so ready for an asian super hero to team up with the black super hero. Like, that would be so so sick!

Malgorbia I know right. I’m reading a comic about how the Dora Milaje are trained and it would be cool to see them learn some Asian fighting styles, which could lead to introducing an Asian character and eventual super hero.

Having an Asian Superhero & African Superhero fighting side by side as main leads in a film would be super lit, I would go see that movie in a heartbeat.

Jenna D no one of the cool things about Dora Milaje is that they use indigenous African martial arts. To make them have an Asian person train them would take away from it and also be a total cliché.

A lot of people hating on Koreans for not feeling strongly about the movie and/or knowing about black people, but how many of you actually know an ounce of Korean history lol 😂

For those saying, there are no Asian superheroes. It's true, we don't but let's not forget.. in Asia Japanese anime/Manga is quite famous.
So basically Goku, Luffy, Naruto, Toriko, Gon etc are our Asian superheros.
