      So you mean the interpretors they hired? They were paid to do this. While you are right it wouldn't have been possible without them, that'd also be like saying it wouldn't be possible to watch this without the producer, the film crew, Jo, the cameras, the creators of the cameras, etc.

      I learned from baby einstien videos and my parents (yes they hear I was just to little to talk) they always knew exactly what I wanted because I knew sign language up until I could actually start talking. It is possible.

      You don't actually need to really teach your kids to talk. They'll more then likely pick up on just about everything they need. Especially with things like TV, preschool, and so on. I'm sure other family members have also helped.

    It's so refreshing to see that their deafness was not used as an excuse for their parenting. I love the focus on open communication through an accessible language and showing that Deaf people make good parents as well. Additionally, it gave insight into the lives of many CODAs who become more like an interpreter for their parents rather than their child. Really tastefully done and very informative.

    The older sister hit my heart so hard. It really sucks when your parents just throw their responsibilities on you for being the oldest and you just have to grow up. It’s the same for me and People would think it’s cute your youngest siblings call you dad but it’s messed up because they think it’s mine because I look way older than 19 because of trauma and being surrounded by pollution.

    I feel so bad for Melissa. It isn’t her job to take care of the children, and even though the parents are deaf it doesn’t give them an excuse to not try harder. They do try, they just need to be firmer with the children.

    I think this is my favorite episode so far 🥰💕 Just the way that Jo came in and helped bridge the communication barriers for the kids, and helped rebuild things between Melissa and her parents. And everyone did the work they needed to do! Just beautiful 💕✨

      Theres ways to say uh and um in sign language, spelling it out or letting your hands go slack but the interpreter was probably just thinking of the translation

      I’m not fluent at all, but to my knowledge “Uh” ‘s and “um” ‘s are usually just facial expressions in asl - like furrowed or raised eyebrows to show contemplation, confusion, and so on. I’ve never seen someone spell them out in asl unless they were directly quoting something that was written down or something.

      Interpret sometimes use expression, spell it out or it just ignore them if the deaf person want to. (I know those bc I am deaf)

    That interpreter is really good! She speaks just like they are the person saying it. And its sad that those 2 girls tease their deaf parents. They should have empathy and want to be helpful

    It’s so interesting going on Facebook to look up these past families. Some of the children are in their 20s now! Some look like they turned out well adjusted adults who were just brats as kids.

    If they had actually bothered to teach their kids sign language, it would have solved so many problems. If my kid was deaf, I’d automatically teach myself and vice versa. Communication between parents and their children are so important.

    This reminds me of another show I saw that took place in the UK where both parents were blind and had like ten kids and the two oldest had to do everything . At least these two seem to care about learning how to be better parents.

      Not incapable, unwilling. These parents were perfectly capable of parenting and teaching their children, they chose not to because it was easier to parentify their oldest daughter. Big difference.

      None of the families are the worst since they all at least asked for help. I'd say the best way to do it is ranking them by who was most willing to change and kept the changes rather than best/worst.
