Installing an ACT clutch into a 2005 Subaru WRX. This video is to show some problems I am having getting the throwout bearing to seat into the clutch retention system.
I made the video for ACT, as I was on the phone with them earlier. It is pretty clear to me that the retention ring on the new clutch is spread out to wide, preventing the thrust bearing from re-seating into the ring. I just have been without this car too long, and I need to get moving on getting back together.
I just installed a clutch set on a 03 WRX and worked great for about 3 days. Then the throw out bearing let go of the snap ring as shown. I was able to push it back in but it only made it 1 day before it let go again. Had same prob on an ISUzu. we ended up welding throw out bearing to the pressure plate. Will prob do same to the WRX. Sucks because I have to pull the motor AGAIN. This is just a bad design!
The update from ACT was to take the ring out and squeeze it in some pliers. So far it seems like it will do the trick. If you are using this for reference, be careful when doing this, as the ring has notches in it and will quickly bend in the thinner areas of the ring. Go slow, bend evenly.
I had this on an '04 wrx. The shop that installed it said it was a nightmare because it would keep falling off etc. It's a known defect and only really affects ACT for some reason. I mean I bought a kit from them sealed in '12, so I'd just avoid them... You'll save money on the product but spend double on install. Or if you do it yourself like I have in the past you'll just pull out your hair instead. You may want to buy everything else from them and get another brands pressure plate with the same rating.
My clutch was actually a Brute Power purchased from O'rielly Auto Parts, and had the same prob. Im going to weld it to the pressure plate to make sure it dosnt let go again!
@jun19020987 You should be able to use a stock clutch bearing, but I would check with Exedy. I wouldn't use the same bearing you have in there, as it is a bearing that takes a lot of wear. The idea is if you are in there replacing the clutch, take the time to put a new throw-out bearing in as well.
Just called ACT and they said to adjust the clutch pedal height so that it is slightly pushed in, eliminating the sound. Does this not mean that the release/ throw out bearing is always, in my case with my WRX, pushing against the pressure plate " vortex" forks? It did eliminate the sound, but Ive already had to adjust it several times today, could mean that its loosening off, or just more wear is occuring... Subaru dealer guy says hey, do what ACT says, and if problems occur later, ive nowCMA
i had problems with my new stage 3 Gforce clutch on my 03 wrx the stupid ring around the throwout bearing pop out for the 3rd time so i just had it welded and installed the clutch on and took it for a spin, launch it and ever since no problems at all.
Ive been driving on my ACT HDSS clutch in my 2010 Subaru WRX now for at least 30 000 km now and Now the little squeak I had on day one is minor to the noise that im hearing now and I really f'cking hope that my transmission is ok
Honestly after 15k miles it sounds odd to have the ring start failing. I would take pictures and document as you go in case you uncover something else.
I really wish I would have saw your video two days ago.... fuck. My new ACT HDSS is doing this in my 2010 WRX. I now have no warranty coverage from Subaru... My TO bearing seems to be the culprit, noise when in neutral, goes away when clutch is depressed
ACT will walk you through bending the ring with nothing technical to offer. Just bend the ring and test it a few times by hand before putting it all back together.
What did you end up doing ? Did you install the ACT TOB and bend it to make it sit in a litttle? Did it squeak once installed? did you see my video? > watch?v=_H3_K8xGvhg

Where did you weld it? Did you weld just the ring on or the throw out bearing and the ring?

Then your pulling your transmission a year later, ask me how I know.
@0011STEALTH
? WTF????
@0011stealth
You make me laugh! This has nothing to do with breaking the clutch in. Wow...
