Charlie Wilson came up with played the bass line on keyboards for this song in the studio. He also came up with all of the funky bass lines for The Gap band what Robert Wilson use the combination a bass guitar with keyboard effects on stage.

This song came out around 81'. That means that someone had did the moonwalk(the backslide) on camera before Michael Jackson. Even though the LA Breakers and other LA Dancers had been doing it for years before it had been filmed.

An extra tite burnin' out reaction 👨🏾‍🔧! The car 🚗 revving sound at the beginning of the song was dope! Charlie Wilson did a funky backslide 🤠. I see 👁👁 that you have reacted to The Gap Band before: You Dropped A Bomb On Me, Outstanding and Party Train and Early In The Morning. Burn Rubber (Why You Wanna Hurt Me) was the lead single released from the Gap Band's 1980 album: The Gap Band III. It was written by Charlie Wilson, Lonnie Simmons and Rudy Taylor. It was produced by Lonnie Simmons. The song reached #1 on the R&B chart, #19 on the Dance chart and #84 on the Hot 100. Billboard magazine ranked it as the 12th biggest R&B single of 1981. This performance was from the Dutch TV show: TopPop, on April 18, 1981.
The lyrics are a composite of two true stories. Lonnie Simmons had a girlfriend in college who left him abruptly, and a roadie for the band had a girl who sent him to the store and moved out while he was gone.
When you burn rubber, you drive away so fast that the tires leave some of their rubber on the road. There's often a cloud of smoke left behind as the car takes off. In this Funk classic, the girl makes a quick exit, burning rubber and leaving the guy behind after she sends him out for a soda. The poor dude can't figure out what he did to deserve it.
"It could have been a love story if you slowed the track down, because it talked about this girl leaving this guy and running home to mother, and burning rubber out the back door and taking all of her clothes and leaving only hangers and bows in the closet", Lonnie Simmons explained in the book: Billboard Book Of #1 R&B Hits. "Part of that was a true story".
The song opens with the sounds of a car burning rubber and driving away. They used two cars to do it. The revving noise was a Volkswagen owned by Cavin Yarbrough of Yarbrough & Peoples ("Don't Stop The Music"). That car didn't have the horsepower to burn rubber, so they used another car for that and combined the sounds. Both were recorded in the parking lot of the Los Angeles studio where they were working: Total Experience Records.
It's a very memorable open, but it almost got nixed. According to Lonnie Simmons, their record label asked them to remove it, fearing that radio stations wouldn't play it. They took it off, but some copies accidentally went out with the car sounds. Those got a great response, so they made sure the sound effects stayed in.
According to studio engineer Jack Rouben, the foundation of the song started with its bassline: "[The track] was a musical idea that Charlie came up with on the Minimoog that turned into a groove, then a completed arrangement, and then they put the lyrics at the very end...This song was built upon that one repeating bass track, and that was the jam that blossomed into a whole complete song". Jack Rouben also remarked how the title for this song, along with many other hits by the band, was a phrase coined by co-writer Rudy Taylor.
The song has been used in the films 📽: Boss Level (2020), I'm In Love With A Church Girl (2013) and At First Sight (1999).
The song has been used in the television shows 📺: Insecure (S2/E5 "Hella Shook" 2017), Cold Case (S7/E13 "Bomber" 2010) and Entourage (S2/E3 "Aquamansion" 2005).
    Lyrics 🗒:
Woo, gave you my money, I gave you my time
Why you want to hurt me, girl
Are you serious, I'm just curious
Why you want to hurt me, girl
Just because you're not for real
    Why you hurt me, girl
Just because you're not for real
    Why you hurt me, girl
    Never, ever had a lover
Who put the peddle to the metal
And burn rubber on me, Charlie
    Oh, no
You took my money, you took my time
Made me think everything was fine
Then you upped and ran away
And made me just go crazy
I never, ever had a lover
Who put the peddle to the metal
And burn rubber on me, Charlie
    Oh, no, no, no
Just because you're not for real
    Why you hurt me, girl
Just because you're not for real
    Why you hurt me, girl
I never, ever had a lover
Who put the peddle to the metal
And burn rubber on me, Charlie
    Oh, no, no, no
Just because you're not for real
    Why you hurt me, girl
Just because you're not for real
    Why you hurt me, girl
You told me to go up the block
To get you a strawberry pop
When I got back to the flat
You had burned rubber out the back
I went to the closet and saw no clothes
All I saw was hangers and poles
I went to the phone and called your mother
And told me that you had burned rubber on me, Charlie
Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no
Just because you're not for real
    Why you hurt me, girl
Just because you're not for real
    Why you hurt me, girl
I never, ever had a lover
Who put the peddle to the metal
And burn rubber on me, Charlie
Oh, no, no, no, no, oh, no, yeah, yeah
Just because you're not for real
    Why you hurt me, girl
You took my money, you took my time
You made me think everything was fine
Like the clock on the wall said ding-ding-dong
Got to find another lover that won't be gone
She won't put the medal to the metal
And burn rubber, burn rubber on me, Charlie
    No, no, no, no
    Never, ever had a lover
Who put the peddle to the metal
And burn rubber on me, Charlie
No, no, no, no, no, no
    Gap Band Info 📰:
The Gap Band which consists of 3 brothers- Charlie (lead singer), Ronnie & Robert Wilson, is from Tulsa, Oklahoma (Black Wall Street). The three Wilson brother started out singing in the father's church and stayed involved in music throughout their school years. The Gap Band's name "GAP" is an acronym for 3 main streets (Greenwood, Archer & Pine) from their Tulsa, Oklahoma hometown. Charlie Wilson attended Langston University and would go on to become drum major in the Langston University Marching Pride.
The Gap Band officially formed in 1967, based around the three Wilson brothers, but often included other musicians as well. The band received its first big break by being the back up band for fellow Oklahoman Leon Russell's album: Stop All That Jazz, released in 1974.
Early on, the group took on a funk sound typical of the early 1970s This style failed to catch on, and their first two albums: Magicians Holiday (1974), which was recorded at Leon Russell's historic The Church Studio and The Gap Band (1977), not to be confused with their 1979 album of the same name, failed to chart or produce any charting singles. Afterwards, they were introduced to Los Angeles producer Lonnie Simmons, who signed them to his production company: Total Experience Productions (named after his successful Crenshaw Boulevard nightclub), and managed to secure the group a record deal with Mercury Records.
On their first album with Lonnie Simmons: The Gap Band (1979), they found chart success with songs including: "I'm In Love" and "Shake", with the latter becoming a Top 10 R&B hit in 1979.
Later that same year, the group released the single: "I Don't Believe You Want To Get Up And Dance (Oops! Up Side Your Head)", from their album: The Gap Band II (1979). Although it did not hit the Billboard Hot 100, it soared to number 4 in the US Billboard R&B chart, and the album went Gold. The song, and the band's musical output as a whole, became more P-Funk-esque with expanded use of the synthesizers and spoken monologues within songs. The song: "Steppin' (Out)", also reached the top 10 on the R&B chart.
The Gap Band reached a whole new level of fame in 1980 with the release of their number 1 R&B album charting and number 16 Billboard Hot 100 album: The Gap Band III. That album had Soul ballads such as the number 5 R&B chart song: "Yearning For Your Love", and Funk songs such as the R&B chart-toppers: "Burn Rubber On Me (Why You Wanna Hurt Me)" and "Humpin'".
They repeated this formula on the number 1 R&B album Gap Band IV in 1982, the first album released on Lonnie Simmons' newly launched Total Experience Records, which resulted in three hit singles: "Early In The Morning" (number 1 R&B, number 13 Dance, number 24 Hot 100), "You Dropped A Bomb On Me" (number 2 R&B, number 31 Hot 100, number 39 Dance) and "Outstanding" (number 1 R&B, number 24 Dance). It was during this time that former Brides Of Funkenstein singer Dawn Silva joined them on tour.
Their 1983 album: "Gap Band V: Jammin'", went Gold, but was not quite as successful as the previous works, peaking at number 2 on the R&B chart and number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100. The single: "Party Train", peaked at number 3 on the R&B chart and the song: "Jam The Motha'", peaked at number 16 on the R&B chart, but neither made it onto the Hot 100. The album's closer song: "Someday", featured Stevie Wonder as a guest vocalist.
The group's next album: Gap Band VI, brought them back to number 1 R&B in 1985, but the album sold fewer copies and did not go Gold. The group's single: "Beep A Freak", hit number 2 on the R&B chart while the group's single: "I Found My Baby", peaked at number 8 on the R&B chart and the group's single: "Disrespect", peaked at number 18 on the R&B chart. That same year, lead singer Charlie Wilson and singer Shirley Murdock provided backing vocals on Zapp & Roger's number 8 R&B chart song: Computer Love.
While the group's 1986 cover of the song: "Going In Circles", went to number 2 on the R&B charts, and the album it was released on: Gap Band VII, hit number 6 on the R&B album chart, the album almost became their first in years to miss the Billboard 100. While they were beginning to struggle stateside, the group found their greatest success in the UK when their 1986 single: "Big Fun", from Gap Band 8 (1986) reached number 4 in the UK Singles Chart. The group's 1988 album: Straight From The Heart, was their last studio album with Total Experience Records.

The Gap Band caught a small break in 1988 with the Keenen Ivory Wayans film: I'm Gonna Git You Sucka. They contributed the non-charting song: "You're So Cute", and the number 14 R&B chart song of the same title as the movie: I'm Gonna Git You Sucka. Their first song on their new record label: Capitol Records. The group's single: "All Of My Love", from their 1989 album: Round Trip, is to date, their last number 1 R&B hit. The album also produced the number 8 R&B charting song: "Addicted To Your Love", and the number 18 R&B charting song: ""We Can Make It Alright". They left Capitol Records the next year and went on a five-year hiatus from producing new material.
During the 1990s, the band released three non-charting studio albums and two live albums. In 1992, Charlie Wilson ventured into a solo career and has had several moderate R&B hits on his own accord. Charlie Wilson's vocals were credited in part for inspiring the vocal style of new jack swing artists Guy, Aaron Hall, Jodeci, Keith Sweat and R Kelly. The Gap Band reunited in 1996, and issued the compilation album: The Gap Band Live And Well, a live performance greatest hits album.
On August 26, 2005, The Gap Band was honored as a BMI Icon at the 57th annual BMI Urban Awards. The honor is given to a creator who has been "a unique and indelible influence on generations of music makers". "Outstanding" alone remains one of the most sampled songs in history and has, astonishingly, been used by over 150 artists.
Charlie Wilson aka Uncle Charlie has has a very successful solo career. He is still active in the music industry as he just finished touring with New Edition & Jodeci this past summer (2022). In 2008, Charlie Wilson was diagnosed with prostate cancer and treated successfully with implants. He has since worked with the Prostate Cancer Foundation, encouraging Black men to be tested for the disease as one of its National Spokesmen.
Charlie Wilson still performs his music live on stage in 2024.
