As Vox Machina prepares for their return to Emon, Grog demands a rematch against Kern to regain his honor. Keylith and Tiberius get into trouble with the law, as Burt “Scanlan” Reynolds mounts a legal defense. Percy has a series of unusual encounters while shopping, as Vax contemplates a tattoo. Upon returning home, the group has an awkward encounter with a fan, but there’s no time to rest with bad news on the horizon…

A few episodes back when the sovereign of Tal Dorei mentioned the name Lord and Lady Briarwood, Taliesin must have blinked 100times in a second while he processed the fact that those two are still a problem

Mercer says "sigil" with such confidence that I questioned my own pronunciation of it the last 23 episodes.
I've heard other D&D folks pronounce the name of the City of Doors that way, so I don't know whether (a) that's the correct pronunciation of the city, that Matt has confused for the pronunciation of the word, (b) enough D&D people have watched CR that the way he pronounces it has spread, or (c) he's just not the only person who says it that way and the reason I've only noticed it in D&D circles is because how often do you use the word "sigil" in everyday conversation?
@@johnnye87the canon way to say the name of the city is with a hard G, yes. However, wotc staff has said (in their recent Planescape videos) you're free to pronounce it however you like.

Taliesin is so good at being Percy. He always looks so genuinely stressed and upset when the Briarwoods are mentioned, as if he actually _is_ Percy. It's a sight to behold.

Can we talk how much Travis learned from the first loss? In the last match he was just throwing punches and trying to win by brute force, but this time he was using Grog's abilities, racial traits and using his rage in the right moment. If he had won in the first time he would never learn those things and the lost was a development lesson both to Grog and Travis. I loves this so much

I remember Travis saying in his Between The Sheets episode that he didn't care about role play when he first created Grog. Character development can happen in real life.

Considering how many dirty looks Travis shoots Orion during game (deservedly so), that really is great sportsmanship
Hes trying to teach Orion by example cause we all know Orion wouldn't do this for anyone else. He is more likely to try and steal the spotlight since he is the main character and all. Guy can't be kicked off soon enough.
@@bowserbrowser6559 honestly, I'm glad for comments like this. I nearly gave up watching this quite a few episodes ago because of him. Thankfully, I read comments like this and found out I didn't have to suffer him for _too_ long and I decided to stay.
Glad I did! I've even grown to like Tiberius for what he is, a little. I love the rest, though, and I don't want to give them up coz of a metamagic, metagaming douche!
@@NearlyH3adlessNick Yeah Tiberius as a character has a fair few really good moments and can bring quite a bit to the party, during those good moments we can get a glimpse of what Orion was probably like back before the streaming started (after all they played for 2 years before streaming, if he was like this the whole time I doubt he'd have lasted those years).
Sadly for a variety of reasons Orion's behavior devolved to where it is this episode, and a little worse later, and that pretty much ruined Tiberius as a character, I personally skip a lot of his "solo" dialogue now that I'm on a second watch through (mostly listen tbh).
Anyway if you've not made it there already then look forward to the end of Ep 27, that's Orion's last appearance.

I really love Travis in this! I mean, he is so into it and really scientific in how he approaches the fight. It's really when the "jock" comes out, as he's describing specific parts of the body that he's targeting.

I only started watching a week ago and I really enjoy it! I like travis and sam best, I think their interactions are so fun and natural!
Tbh I think what Vax did was both right and in-character. If that kid can be taken down in one hit there's no way he can travel with VM. Vax showing him what can happen when adventuring and then telling him to train and come back was a good lesson. Also Vax is a product of surviving with only Vex since being a teenager, as well as being part of a crime syndicate. In his mind learning the hard way is what gets results, no-one will hold your hand when you're fighting for your life.
And this is a world with monsters crawling over every square footage of the world that will tear you apart and eat you, and that's not including the creatures. XD

Yea, I felt that what he did didn't warrant the reaction he got from Keyleth and Tiberius. Vax really did the right thing, the kid wasn't ready for fighting at their level and they don't have the time to train him. He would've been toast if VM said yes. He had to fight because the guy believed he was ready to fight with them. Vax had to prove that they are on a completely different level than him.
I also don't think Vax wanted to place him in this dangerous lifestyle that he started out of necessity. There's probably an element of "If I were you, if I could go back, I would've done things differently."

Can we take a moment to appreciate Matt's talents? In about 20 minutes, he went from a slightly insane black powder seller, to a gruff ore salesman, to an excited teenager, a disheartened teenager, to a hopeful teenager, to their female housekeeper, and didn't miss a step.
And that was just his hair! The voices he did were even better! ... might be over-caffeinated

Yes, their little moments are often overshadowed by everyone else's showboating, but Marisha and Taliesin are the dark horses of this series.
Marisha's performance especially when she's describing the dream of her death was... chef's kiss.
I agree, Percy/Keyleth's friendship is beautiful, and the way Taliesin/Marisha portray them is wonderful. They are like siblings (not completely dissimilar to the twins), and though they are in many ways overshadowed by the other big personalities, the subtle glances, hand holding, and support they give each other is just amazing. ❤

It really bothers me when people genuinely think “men and women can’t be platonic”. This entire group is a testament to the fact that that just isn’t true.
I'm watching these for the 1st time, after seeing Vox Machina on Prime, and this was the MOST INTENSE fight. I was practically pulling my hair out when Travis started missing at the end of the fight. This was amazing.
I just realized that the stance Matt does when Kern first shows off his monk abilities is the same one that Marisha uses in campaign two whenever she says "I wanna do some cool monk shit." Coincidence?

@@kaleidoscope942 No, I believe Kern have this feat called tavern brawler, thats why he can go grapple and deal damage without sacrificing attack move
Ken Silverwood I’m not too sure. Tavern brawler wouldn’t necessarily grant him the narrative back flip kick that Matt made a point of stating was a new martial ability for him. To me that confirmed monk. Not that the flip kick is a skill of the class, but it being a martial skill set leads me to believe it is definitely martial arts.
While watching, I thought/assumed that Kern was "just" a Barbarian back during the first fight, but then trained as a monk after the 1st fight and before this one. taking the dodge action, and rolling d4 for melee, seemed to hint monk also - but ofc could be wrong

Mercer's sense of timing is AMAZING. Whenever the players start interacting amongst themselves he let's it go on the perfect amount of time then effortlessly pulls them back into the story. I'm in awe. Also, Victor the black powder merchant is now my favorite character.

I actually started crying from laughter when Scanlon introduced himself as Burt Reynolds, Esquire and put the finger over his lip. As much as I love the whole group, everything is 10 times funnier when Sam is there!
Scanlan is amazing, and I love his wit and his improvisation skills. I find that he goes too far sometimes. I personally dislike the scatological humour, and a certain tendency to break suspension of disbelief.

It's a little odd that so many people notice that Orion uses the same phrase each time without ever quoting it properly. It is always "=Hi,= I'm Tiberius Stormwind". He isn't announcing who he is, he's introducing himself (if you are familiar with that concept)
That scene with Vax and Kynan was so beautiful. What a letter from the future to young Vax - it felt like Vax was pouring out his own journey towards self-understanding to that kid.
Watching this far in the future on that crit-role binge, and I gotta say the, "I just wanted to be a hero" hurt so badly to hear.

6 years later, rewatching this... it still pains me how Travis went to the trouble of getting the Stone Giant Strength potion... only to keep forgetting to use the adjusted modifier for several of the hits involved (he kept low-balling himself on some of the blows, adding his STR:19 bonus instead of STR:23... lol...
Exactly, and he doesn’t add rage damage throughout either. These two fights are honesty some of the hardest parts of all of C1 for me, as a number cruncher. He should have won the first time, and he should have won WAY easier the second time. I love Travis, and Grog, but I just have to turn my brain off and enjoy the drama of it lol.

@@donkeyshins7715 Since both Grog and his opponent were both raging the two abilities were effectively canceling each other out so they were just rolling as if they weren't raging to expedite things. Matt actually broke character right at the start of this fight to explain this to the audience.

and not to mention the constant forgetting of inspiration dice, effects like the feast, effects of armor, weapons and other misc stuff... its been very painful to watch sam give 5 people inspiration dice at the start of a big fight and only one person use it... or the previous episode when everyone forgot they had advantage on wisdom saving throws in the fiery plane...
The whole scene involving Percy and the Gunpowder and ore merchants was like an episode of Monty Python's Flying Circus.

Vax's tough love spared Kynan from an early grave by showing him he's far from ready to be adventuring out in a world where danger lies around every corner; most especially when traveling with such battle-hardened adventurers like Vox Machina. Yes, while he could have easily demonstrated this without bringing harm to the boy by sneaking up behind him and holding a knife to his throat, Vax certainly got his point across, and Kynan understood him. Vax did not do this as to "bully" him, but to teach him that the life Vox Machina lives is not as romanticized as the stories he hears or reads, but is dangerous and ready to kill without sympathy or care. Vax did not disregard his dreams or desires, but was empathetic in telling the boy he was once like him, and that Kynan first needs to gain more experience and understanding, to train, and then Vax will mentor him as to become a member of Vox Machina.
The opposing argument from Tiberius/Orion was just from his frustration in the party wanting to roleplay and pursue personal errands instead of doing what he wanted right away. It was just an excuse to vent that anger out on them. While I understand, I disagree with his behavior.

I appreciate what Mercer did at the end of the pit fight... Grog missed 3 attacks on what should have been the final blow.
Instead of having the champion attack 3 times, he used the dodge action and only attacked once to give Grog a chance.

Teej Duff sometimes that’s what a DM needs to do. They sometimes need to make the wrong character choice, not the right choice... because people make faults so the NPCs should as well.

When things go south, people don't always make the most rational decisions.
Plus, good roleplay includes remembering that characters (and NPCs) themselves don't see the numbers and rule-sheets behind it.
He went defensive because he saw that Grog toughened up since their last bout and that he just kept fighting when by all means he should have been out cold. Of course we players/audience know that this gets more difficult with each use and that 2-3 extra hits would have been very hard to counter... but the characters themselves do not.
It was a fair decision. In favor of Grog? Possibly. But that's not necessarily a bad thing.

As someone who came from campaign 2, seeing the moment he got the dm screen was a very big WOW reaction. He got it as a gift from a fan and STILL uses it to this day and it's become iconic, imagine being the fan who gave it to him!

@@izstrella Yes, after campaign 1 ended they all at some point got the tattoo. Liam, Laura and Marisha's are on their forearms. Matt's is on his wrist, usually covered by his wrist bands. Those 4 have the same design. I think Travis, Sam, and Taliesin got theirs later with a different design - the one that looks like the circular VM pin. Sam's is on his shoulder blade, Travis' is on his calf, and I think Taliesin's is on his shoulder, but I'm not sure I remember correctly. Ashley has a different design on her forearm.

I have never even considered playing DnD in my life. I only started to think about playing it with my wife (as we are both big fantasy readers) as an idea for a date night. So, I started searching on CZcams for tutorials on how to play and stumbled upon this channel. This has been so enjoyable that I have been listening to the campaigns while I work. So fun! GROG!!!
