I graduated from college in 1977. I ran track. That year the NCAA Division 3 championships were held at my college track. Edwin was running for Morehouse College. I got to watch him rim about 6 times over the weekend. TV pictures can't do justice to the power, speed and beauty of his running. It was an act of worship just to watch him run. I've always been thankful I lived to see it.

I recall a Sports Illustrated article about Edwin Moses where sport scientists measured just about everything about him. This was rather early in the whole concept of advanced testing for athletes, and what was absolutely astonishing was Edwin's near balanced strength on both the left and right side of his body. His legs, his arms, everything... perfectly in-synch. I don't recall the specific numbers, but they were within a few hundredths of each other, right and left. That was part of his excellence and one of the reasons why he switched legs over the hurdles; most hurdlers use the same leg to stride over the hurdle, but not Edwin. He re-wrote the book on how to run the 400M Hurdle event.
I suppose it was the exacting scientist mind of his. After all, he has a degree in physics. :)

Not too many know this: had a secret technique that was born out of his educational background in physics. He was able to deduce that riding the inside line of his own lane as close as possible could save him several meters of distance around the 400m track. He facilitated this by going over the hurdles with his left leg. He also was able to calibrate his 13 steps to achieve a very consistent streamlined hurdle step every over every hurdle. He did this for his early success in the 70s. Eventually everyone else started to notice and adopt those techniques… which is testament to how he was able to stay head of the competition into the 1980s. Best hurdler of all time and probably one of the most cerebral athletes
