"The Companions didn't celebrate the Mawlid" | Shaykh Walead Mosaad

  • Some people think the Mawlid is a reprehensible innovation and oppose it by the mere fact that the Companions of the Prophet, may the peace of God continue to nourish his being and our connection to him, didn't celebrate it. But there is another fact that they forget: we’re not the Companions. Those who lived with the Prophet, God’s Peace and Blessings be upon him, breathed his way of life and did not need reminders. Even the generations after them kept the Beloved, Peace and Blessings be upon him, alive in their hearts and in their consciousness. Why would they need a Mawlid or a weekly celebration to remember him?
As for us, we need to be constantly reminded and woken up from our forgetfulness and all the distractions that cloud our hearts and minds in our daily life.
The sicker you are, the more medicine you need. And we are full of spiritual diseases that prevent us from remembering God and His Prophet, Peace and Blessings be upon him, and that is why the great scholars of our Ummah prescribed us medicine in the form of awrad (litanies), Mawalid (celebrations of the birth and blessing of the Prophet ﷺ) and Majalis (sacred gatherings). Without such aides, he, Peace and Blessings be upon him, would rarely cross our consciousness.
If we simply want to gather together to remember the Prophet, Peace and Blessings be upon him, how can it be wrong? The real question to ask is not whether the Companions celebrated the Mawlid or not but what do we need to do to attain the same degree of love that they had for the Beloved, may the peace of God continue to nourish his being and our connection to him.

Spot on... my nephews and niece born in west and we celebrate Mawlid every year. this is how they stay connected with Love of Prophet Muhammad S.A.W. And people who dont organise such gatherings, unfortunately, thier kids seem to be distracted and depressed :(
