    ABOUT THE HIGH MOUNTAIN HOMESTEAD
    Hi! I'm PJ, and my family loves the homesteading life! It's something my wife and I have always wanted to do, but we grew up with ZERO HOMESTEADING EXPERIENCE!!!!!
    We grew up in beautiful southern California, 15 minutes away from the beach. As amazing as that was, we both dreamed of a life closer to land and animals. After getting married and moving to Utah, our family slowly grew. We had become a family of four living in a townhome with a small backyard filled with potted plants.
    In 2019 we dipped out feet into homesteading on 1 ¼ acre lot in Utah. In 18 months we were ready to do this for real. So in 2021 we packed everything up (including our sheep) and moved to North Carolina to 12 acres and we love every inch of our homestead!
    We raise Dorper sheep and have big plans for:
    • grass-fed lamb
    • fullblood Dorper breeding stock
    • meat chickens
    • laying chickens and ducks
    • heritage breed pork
    • honey
    • row crops
    • perennial food forest
    • and more
    I hope you join us on our journey, subscribe and ring the bell if you haven't yet.

    Long time listener - first time caller here... My husband and I have been watching your videos about Dorper Sheep for a year now. We truly enjoy your energy, joy and teachings. Like you, we are truly fond of the Dorper breed. A close second for us (as for as Hair Sheep) is the Painted Desert Sheep.
    We are about to start a herd of Hair Sheep ourselves (for meat on our Homestead), and we were wondering "Are there any extra 'tips' you could share with us that would sway us towards the Dorper breed?". We ask because we need some Dorper friends in our lives (hahaha).,. I am sure you completely understand the struggle.
    Thank you for your time and for continually being the positive light you are. "Happy Homesteading!" ✨🌱✌️❤️

      Haha!
      The painted desert are maybe the best looking adult sheep (Dorpers are the cutest lambs). But they seem very self sustaining and hardy. I don't keep painted desert, but from what I heard the PD rams are more likely to... ram stuff 😅.
      Dorpers not only seem to fill out at a higher dressing weight, but also produce more desire cuts.

    Yay! I'm about to start shopping for my sheep.
    I checked out the local dorper auctions, and they are CRAZY EXPENSIVE! Last year a ram sold for $45k (au). Lol. I can't afford anywhere near that 😂. Might have to speak to the breeders and see if I can afford their rejects.

    • @homesteadingwithPJ
      @homesteadingwithPJ  Před 3 lety

      Dang! I have a friend who took best yearling ram at a show and I think was offered 10% of that! (USD)
      If you look around, you'll fine something much more affordable. I see reject pure breed (not fill blood) going for under $500 often. Even seen them in the $200s.
      Best of luck! Let me know how it goes. Dorpers sound like amazing sheep in Australia, especially if you can find a market to integrate them into a merano heard.

    Nice Video, im currently looking for a new ram and was wondering if I prefer the dorper or the katahdin. Im probably going for kathadin or painted desert as I prefer the horns.

    • @homesteadingwithPJ
      @homesteadingwithPJ  Před 3 lety +1

      The painted desert makes a very handsome ram. But as I've heard the offspring don't reach as good of dressing weights as the Dorper, also you'll get fewer desirable steak cuts.
      I'm a big fan of a katahdin / Dorper cross for a ram. Makes for a very handsome ram who will also throw many good qualities in their young. Also they often have the horns you'd see on a katahdin.

    Good video don't get destructed by all the noise out there a lot of comments are from dreamers witch know nothing more than you follow your head and be open minded . . .nothing wrong with your dorpers on the end of the day it all comes down to management . Have you ever thought of buying commercial does and get them implanted with embryo's sell them after you weaned the lambs and then sell the mature lambs for breeding genetics in that way you can make good money for your small land..You can buy embryo's that are only male offspring...just a thought. Do you know why a well developed testicals is important ? It comes down to early sexual maturity.. Higher testosterone levels , higher fertility levels, faster grow rate with a better body conformation and a better feed conversion all that is carried over in its offspring. To think about it, the rams can improve your genetics by 50% .Seeing someone passionate in what he is doing is always a pleasure! Good luck

      I sell for breeding stock. I've never seen a Dorper at a show or sold for breeding stock with a tail, especially fullblood. We use bands, not crushers. Even though they are hair sheep, they can get messy back there.

    How do Dorper sheep compare to Katahdin sheep?

    • @homesteadingwithPJ
      @homesteadingwithPJ  Před 3 lety

      Great question! There's a video coming out soon that discusses that on more detail.
      Katahdin sheep are similar, maybe less "beefy" than a Dorper. They are more common than Dorper and almost always more affordable. The two make a good cross breed.
