    How to install third party plugins in GarageBand using 3 different install formats like packages .PKG, .DMG, and where to put the .component file manually. That way you're prepared and know what to expect when downloading plugins. Along the way in this tutorial I'll show some issues you might run into while installing. There are two important things to look for when browsing online for new plugins: 64-bit and AU (Audio Units). That way you'll be sure they will work with the latest version of GarageBand.
    Sometimes plugins don't work. Don't be sad, simply find a different plugin that does a similar thing.

    Just a quick tip for unverified packages : Ctrl + left click, and select "Open" from the drop down menu. You now have an option to override the security setting for this particular element without the need to completely turn off your Mac's security protocols.

    Perfect, clear, understandable instructions, the best tutorial I've seen. The issue I have in GB 10.1.2 is that the "AudioFX" box only appears with "Empty Project". When opening a project any other way, or adding a new track, or changing the current track from the default piano to (for example) guitar, there is no "Audio FX" box. A "How To" vid explaining how to access 3rd party plugins from screens other than "Empty Project" would be excellent. Thanks for what you do.

    • @TobyRyan
      @TobyRyan  Před 8 lety

      Hello! The feature appears to be working for new tracks, older/newer projects etc. but I did notice that sometimes the Audio Units box in Preferences can't be selected when opening other projects, however if you turned it on in an empty project prior to opening any others, then it's still active and 'on'. After turning it on once, it should stay on forever unless an OS update or Apple changes that. You might check a project or guitar track and select your 'Smart Controls' button (top left, third button) and then click the little letter "i" button (found at 3:57) then click the word 'Plugins' to drop down the area with Audio Units. From there you can add instrument plugins or audio effects depending on what kind of track you selected. Instrument tracks for example let you use both Instrument (Piano, Strings. Synths, etc.) in addition to Audio FX, but guitar tracks and live audio tracks only have Audio FX (compressors, EQ, reverb etc.). Hope that helps.

      +Paul Godina drag the song onto an empty track in GarageBand, set up a cycle region of a smaller portion of the song and then use the Share menu up top to Export song to disk to save that portion to your desktop or folder you'd like it to be saved in. The choose .AIFF format and you're good to go. In the sampler video I made, there's a small example at about 8:15 that shows exporting loops.

    • @TobyRyan
      @TobyRyan  Před 5 lety +2

      Hi! GarageBand and Logic Pro only support 64-bit Audio Units (.component files) so there’s no need to install VST unless you’re looking to use a different DAW software, like Ableton or Reason, Reaper, etc.. If that’s the case, the VST files are installed this same way. Installer packages will do it automatically, but some developers still give the individual VST files so you’ll drag them into this similar location like in this video, but instead of the ‘Componenet’ folder, you’ll drag the VST into the ‘VST’ folder.

      @TobyRyan  Před 7 lety +7

      +owen hasty Hey! The new OS X Sierra that just came out updated a few things and made your Mac even more secure. You'll now select "App Store & Identified Developers" and keep that window open because we'll use it again. Then open the Plugin Installer. It'll say "Can't Open" etc. select Ok. You'll now see a button appear in the system preferences window under those selections of AppStore etc... that says "Open Anyway". Click that and you're ready to install like normal. Thanks for bringing that up!

    My Audio FX box is only visible for a Software Instrument track. It is not there in Audio or Drummer tracks, and if your chosen plugin window is already open, it closes when a new Audio or Drummer track is selected. In those types of tracks, the only thing visible is the window listing the default GB effects according to your amp choice.
    I've searched hours online for a tutorial on adding 3rd party effects in a guitar track and just found one which indicates that only GB effects can be used on guitar tracks in Version 10.

    • @TobyRyan
      @TobyRyan  Před 8 lety +1

      +Matthew Sharpe hello! You might check and see which macOS version you have installed. I've been hearing some plugins aren't compatible yet on the latest macOS 10.12 Sierra, if you're current. What you're describing sounds like that could be the case. Each developer addresses compatibility eventually, some are quicker than others. Check Air's website to make sure you have the latest 64-bit AU plugin installed and that their products are supported on the OS version you are using. Usually found under a "System Requirements" tab. To test and make sure it's that specific plugin, I would install another plugin from a different developer and see if that plugin works or crashes GarageBand. If not, then you'll be able to rule out a few things and be certain it's an issue with Air's plugin (I've listed a few choices of plugins in the description.). You might also file a Support ticket with Air and ask a few questions, tell them what happens when you select it and how it crashes GarageBand. Most companies I've dealt with are super friendly and want to help resolve any issues.

I had to restart my computer and then it finally noticed the new plug in. I find that to be annoying and would like to know the reason why that happens.

    • @TobyRyan
      @TobyRyan  Před 5 lety +1

      It wasn’t always like this however, from what I’ve read and experienced, Apple’s latest macOS is the culprit. Something changed in the code a few versions back which require a restart for AU, .component files. It’s a pain, because it’s not just an issue in GarageBand, but also in Logic Pro X and other DAWs that uses AU files - system wide.
      I recommend, installing as many .component files as you need first, then restart after to save time.
      Interesting note: DAWs that use the VST file, on the other hand work instantly.

    • @TobyRyan
      @TobyRyan  Před 7 lety

      Hey Joseph! Make sure Audio Units is enabled in the Preferences Audio/MIDI tab. Then check that the instrument you've installed is a 64-bit AU version. GarageBand is now 64-bit only, so any older 32-bit synths, samplers, drum machines etc floating around the internet won't work unless you can find and install their 64-bit AU version. I would suspect that might be the case since nothing is showing up in the menu except for Apple Instruments. That's often an indicator that the installed version is incompatible with GarageBand.

    Do you think this works with Antares autotune?

    • @TobyRyan
      @TobyRyan  Před 3 lety

      It depends. Some plugins by Antares may or may not work in GarageBand, as some plugins do not support GarageBand. The biggest reason is because GarageBand is limited to individual tracks, and does not currently have a way to route audio or bus audio to a specific track. Logic Pro, on the other hand is supported and can use all current Antares plugins at their fullest capacity. I own a lot of Antares plugins and love them, but have to use a full DAW like Logic Pro or Ableton Live to fully take advantage of them. You can verify this information here, by Antares and check which DAWs they support. Most developers include this kind of information on their website (search “company name, product, and DAW compatibility”) so you don’t waste your time on non-supported plugins. Check it out: www.antarestech.com/host-daw-compatibility/

    I'm trying to download U-He's Triple Cheese software and it shows up just like that yellow box thing and I press install and the program says it installed but it doesn't show up in my garage band no matter what I do. I've tried redownloading, restarting garage band, but it doesn't show up. HELP.

      Hey Rex! I just tried it out and noticed the same thing. I got it to show up after restarting my Mac. Try restarting your Mac from the Apple menu (top left). With the more recent versions of macOS, I've had to restart my computer so that it forces a folder scan of various audio plugins. Not sure why that is, but that should make it show up. Hope that helps!

    Hey! Thank you for the video!! I am really struggling with getting the plugin "MidiO" to work with Garageband 10 - any advice? I drag the component file to the correct place on the HDD but it doesn't show up in garage band. (I have looked around quite a bit on the internet and can't find any solutions.) Thanks again!

    • @TobyRyan
      @TobyRyan  Před 8 lety

      +Tim Martin Hey Tim, it appears the MidiO plugin is a 32-bit plugin. Apple has made the switch to 64-bit in the latest versions of GarageBand 10, which unfortunately means 32-bit plugins will no longer work. There doesn't appear to be an alternative plugin solution at the moment.
      Depending on your final goal, if you're looking into exporting MIDI out of GarageBand, this process might get you where you want to go: scotttroyer.com/2014/05/export-midi-from-garageband/

    • @TobyRyan
      @TobyRyan  Před 7 lety

      +SunnySideUp hello! This process does work on the latest version. Is it not showing up? If not, double check that the Plugin you want is 64-bit Audio Unit (.component), as GarageBand only supports that. Be aware that there are a lot of older 32-bit plugins floating around out there that won’t work. Lastly make sure that Audio Units is enabled in GarageBand Preferences, like in the beginning of the video, sometimes it can untick and default back to off for whatever reason.
      If it’s not installing, the latest version of macOS Sierra locks security pretty tight for a lot of unsigned free plugins, so a quick tip is you’ll need to hold the control key and click on the installed packages to select “Open” from the control-click menu when installing those package files. That’s possibly the easiest and quickest way now. Thanks for watching!

      +StatPlayer2301 make sure you turn on Audio Units in the GarageBand > Preferences > Audio/MIDI tab - Effects: and make sure it has a check mark. Just like at the beginning of this video. Sometimes it's off by default.

    Hi Toby, can you run SoundToys Plugins on GarageBand? I'm having some problems with this. I just bought Little MicroShift 5. I downloaded the dmg and ran the installation. This went fine, but then when I opened Garage band this error message came up "GarageBand unexpectedly quit while trying to use the Audio Unit “Little MicroShift” by “Soundtoys”.
    This plug-in may require an update." Then when I go to the Audio Units where my other plugins are (eg. plugin alliance), SoundToys does not applear I have the license for the Sound Toys plugin authorised through the iLock app. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    • @TobyRyan
      @TobyRyan  Před 7 lety

      Yes! They do work in GarageBand. I caught a couple tweets from them saying there was an issue with iLok software needing an emergency patch / update. It apparently made a lot of developers plugins that rely on iLok to not work until it was updated and running the latest. From the error message, I'm betting the validator that scans plugins on GarageBand startup caught that issue. I would try re-downloading and re-installing the MicroShift .dmg and updating the iLok license manager (usually by downloading their latest installer from them too). If those things don't fix the issue, I would contact Soundtoys support and see if they can help. In the meantime, if GarageBand won't open and you need to work on projects, remove the .component file of MicroShift from the Plug-Ins "Component" folder (found in this folder path @ 3:25), at least until it gets resolved.

    I'm still having trouble trying to add this Vinyl Pluggin. It's kind of frustrating can anyone help ? I have a mac and I'm trying to add the izotope vinyl pluggin to my GarageBand

    • @TobyRyan
      @TobyRyan  Před 7 lety

      Hey Yanni! The Vinyl plugin is fire 🔥 (as is all of their stuff). iZotope just recently released a 'Product Portal' app to download, install, activate and manage all your iZotope products in one place. I highly recommend getting it. Made installing all my products of theirs sooo much easier and faster than what it used to be. They're really good about providing steps to get it working too. www.izotope.com/en/support/authorization/about-product-portal.html
      After you download, install and activate, then you can go to GarageBand, fire up a new track and throw on Vinyl in the Audio FX area like at 3:56 in the video. It's a fun plugin. The process of installing/activating plugins from popular companies like iZotope is pretty standard and comes with the territory. Each company is a little different process but once you go through one, you'll know what to expect with the next and get some sweet tools out of it. Have fun!

    Absolutely cannot get this to work. Audio units are enabled. I downloaded the .au plugin from zoom for ms side mic . installed it into the components folder, restarted garage band 2 separate times. all I have under plug-ins is compressor and channel eq. I also installed the vst just for grins. Garage band doesnt seem to know about either. any ideas?

    • @TobyRyan
      @TobyRyan  Před 7 lety

      Hey David, if a plugin doesn't show up in the menus but other plugins do, it probably means that AU in question is a 32-bit version. Make sure to download and install the 64-bit AU version as the newest version of GarageBand is 64-bit only. If you're also running the latest macOS, you'll also want to make sure the company/developer of the plugin has made it compatible with the latest OS. Thanks for watching!

      @davejohnston Před 7 lety

      Hey, thanks for the reply. actually, NO plugins show up on a 2015
      macbook pro running GB 10.1.3. I have read a few threads that
      bemoan El capitan, and GB where plugins are concerned.
      I also have 10.0.1 on a mac mini 2012...... apple plugins DO show up. Unfortunately, the au that zoom offers is only 32 bit. They offer a 64 bit .vst. so the zoom ms decoder will not work with newer v's of GB.
      Two separate things going on. 1- the latest v of GB does not like plugins at all, and 2- zoom doesnt play nice with either v that needs a 64 bit .au. I guess I'll be using cubase for ms side mic decoding...... as GB also does not support phase inversion, or splitting a stereo track. Thanks again!

    • @davejohnston
      @davejohnston Před 7 lety +1

      I found a work around
      Zoom h6 ms mic decoder software does not work on GB (10.9-mavericks >newer) These require 64bit decoders.
      Macs with 10.8-mountain lion

      Sometimes plugins don't work and an alternative is needed. Glad you found one that works! I've actually used that one and it works great for mid-side equalization. I also like and use Midside Matrix by Goodhertz. goodhertz.co/midside-matrix it's always great to have options in the case one doesn't work as intended.

    • @davejohnston
      @davejohnston Před 7 lety +1

      Thanks again. Interestingly, I tried a few of them, and they all
      worked.......... on v 10.0 which comes with mavericks. They will not
      work on 10.1 which comes with el-capitan. I uninstalled GB from
      el-cap, and installed the older v from mavericks, and the plugins work.

    • @TobyRyan
      @TobyRyan  Před 8 lety

      +JayDerDude make sure you also enable "Audio Units" via the GarageBand Preferences - Audio/MIDI tab. Then Quit and re-open GarageBand again and TX16Wx should be in Instruments menu of the Audio Units section.
      If it's still not appearing, you might try re-installing the AU version installer again. I've had some installs not completely install the first go round on some plugins. Then Restart your Mac and open GarageBand, double checking that Audio Units is enabled and also that you can select it in the Instrument selection menu.

      +Kyle Exten for AU instruments to become available, it requires the Software Instrument choice when creating/adding a new track. It sounds like you're using the Audio Track (microphone icon) which only allows Audio FX. Fire up a new track, select Software Instrument from the menu and then load up your sampler plugin of choice in the AU instruments button in the info tab. Let me know how it goes!

    • @TobyRyan
      @TobyRyan  Před 6 lety

      What you’re looking for is the “.component” file in the folder you downloaded. Developers sometimes call it an “AU” (Audio Units) on their websites. Sometimes they’ll say if it’s 32 or 64-bit. You want 64-bit. GarageBand only uses 64-bit AU .component files. Anything else does not work. Then drag that .component file into your components folder like shown in this video - after that - restart GarageBand by quitting the app and reopening - your new plugin should appear in the plugin list menu under the developer name. If it does not appear (I’ve found many plugins that don’t work.) double check the website to make sure it’s really a 64-bit .component file that you’re downloading. If the developer doesn’t offer it, I’d try a different plugin from somewhere else. pluginboutique.com is a good place to find free plugins that work in GarageBand.

    it didnt do that it just downloaded the package and it wont in garageband

    • @TobyRyan
      @TobyRyan  Před 7 lety

      Sometimes when they don't work, theres a few things to check: Is the plugin 64-bit? (GarageBand only supports 64-bit now.). They usually provide that info on the developer's plugin download page. Make sure Audio Units are turned on in the GarageBand > Preferences menu under "Audio/MIDI" and "Effects" is checked. Lastly, there are two types of plugins: Software Instruments (synths, pianos, etc.) and then Audio Effects. For Instrument plugins to work, when creating a new track select "Software Instrument" from the menu and then "Instruments" under the info tab (the little letter "i" like in the video at 4:07.). Audio Effects (such as compressors, EQs, reverbs, etc.) can be loaded up on any track in the "Effects" area under the little "i" info button.

    • @TobyRyan
      @TobyRyan  Před 7 lety

      +Peter Achilles As far as plugins, the ones I've used are Nectar and/or VocalSynth by iZotope, Harmony Engine Evo by Antares and finally, Little AlterBoy by Soundtoys. All being a little better and targeted at specific types of sounds. I've not found a great 'free' plugin yet that performs close to these. If you find one let me know! From what I've come across, singing each part is the way to go for the most convincing harmony (and also free). Something to be aware of when searching for plugins, the word "harmonizer" is often a 'chorus' effect type of plugin. CZcams Eventide Harmonizer or Soundtoys Microshift and you'll know what those sound like. While really great on vocals, it may or may not be what you're looking for, but if so, TAL makes a great chorus plugin.

      Some developers that sell their plugins like XLN and their Addictive Drums plugin often have their own custom installers and they're similar to the package file installer, meaning it walks you through the process and installs it for you, right where it needs to go. After installation, then you open up GarageBand and you're good to go.

      Hi! No worries. The new macOS updates simplified a few things for this installation process. What's awesome is you can now hold the Control button on your keyboard and left click on the installer, select 'Open' from that pop-up menu. A dialogue then pops up and asks if you're sure. It'll let you install it anyway. This specific right menu action temporarily opens up security for that specific installer, then turns it back on without having to go through the whole process of turning it off and on in the system preferences. Pretty great! ✌🏻

      Hey Brian! I had a chance to download and install it and it appears to working great, but only after I restarted my Mac. I've started noticing (since High Sierra), more and more plugins require full restarts before they will appear in the Instruments menu. I also had to click yes to a button in a window that asked about lowering security. I'm running macOS version 10.13.2 - Dexed is version 0.9.3 - and GarageBand is 10.2 - I downloaded from KVR www.kvraudio.com/product/dexed-by-digital-suburban this FM synth seems like a really good find.
