This hurricane was really life changing. It really reminds me of the day after tomorrow. It was a nightmare to go through. I almost got myself knocked off my feet by the strong winds. It was a scary couple of days for people to go trhough. Even me and love storms like these. But this storm made me stay cuddled up in the bed praying
Stephanie Kelly I hear ya. I don’t know what’s happening, it’s truly scary. But...we NYer’s always pull thru! Stay safe & healthy, we’ll make it thru this!
What has changed since Sandy? Not much. Yeah the city has an updated disaster plan but do you have one for yourself? All Manhattan people should look into safely prepping. Those candles and a rambunctious 4 year old are a recipe for a house fire. Glad I don't live next door to them. Be safe! I did a discussion of Sandy as my first video on my channel for example of what to expect next time.
nah we gave up if something breaks or if their was another disaster we will sit our fat asses down pray or try to entertain our self then we regret not having a plan SIMPLE
And to think that was the result of a Category-1 without much rainfall. Yes it was during high tide, collided with a nor’easter, and was one of the largest tropical cyclones ever. But i could only imagine a Cat-3 or more with heavy rainfall content, much like what has devastated the Gulf Coast in recent years, making landfall in the Northeast, and how that could actually be worse. To that storm, whenever you come, your name will someday live in infamy.
Hurricane Sandy was the scariest experience of my life. I was 7 when it happened, and I remember I was in my bedroom, under a blanket. And I was reading comics. But I was worried about my family, because almost my entire family lives in Manhattan. I used my tablet to watch news, and when I saw all the floods and damage, I damn near had a heart attack. Then the next day, I went to New York with my parents, and saw all the damage. It was so painful to look at. ...when the fuck did I get so depressing ._.
I was there when that happened! My rental apartment was on the 26th floor in the Financial District, and we didn't get the memo to leave, so we stayed in the apartment for 2 days before venturing out. Blehhhhh, getting up those stairs, lol. It was fascinating though; the amount of water in basements and coming out of the subway entrances, the people all being kind and helpful. It was actually heartwarming.
Ive been in this storm. The power just died in my apt and i was on floor 19. Since the power was down for like a week, i had to walk down all those floors just to get to queens where i would stay there temporarily.
In hurricane sandy a tree blew over in my front yard but not on my house and have another tree that blew down and lastly I have a fence and trampoline Half of it blew over my fence and into my neighbours yard and broke a small peice and fixed it and it still works to this day.
Its so crazy to see a New York barely lit up. Just went down there, my hometown, to donate. Its so devastating. People and cars are just lined up everywhere and houses are gone. My thoughts go out to everyone in the east coast!
Hard to believe, but at one time, reporters were not these gruesome, selfish and obnoxious things seen today; they were actually respected and honored for their skills, not their celebrity.
I'm glad that out of an 11 minute and 38 second video, all you took out of it was that. And honestly what was the problem with that? It was showing the changes, even the little ones, caused by the hurricane.
Yes, let's only focus on these privileged Manhattan narcissists having to climb down some stairs and ignore those on Staten Island and the Rockaway Peninsula who til' this day are still suffering from the strom.
The uh 'strom' was indeed pretty bad. It didn't really matter where you were living in NYC or NJ. People in NJ didn't have power for over a week. It was literally millions of homes the power company had to restore. It was a disaster. They had multiple other states going to help out. People as far as Texas. It doesn't get much farther away than that. Trust me, no one was ignored. Forget the news clip.
I live in NJ, it was a VERY scary storm! My family just got power yesterday. We were without power for over 9 days. We are the lucky ones, many are still without power. It was freezing for everyone even with generators! COLD,DARK AND JUST SCARY.
one year later almost nothing was rebuilt. usa usa! building light, cheap wooden house right at the ocean. usa usa! no dams at the coastline- to expensive. usa usa! don t put power cables in the ground- too expensive. usa usa! never learn from mistakes: usa, usa! as long a camera is on we help each other, one week later you are on you own: usa, usa! the house is gone and they give food and clothes: usa, usa! we want everything cheap and easy. but we r shocked everytime it habens again. USA, USA!
A lot of the brick and stone buildings of the 19th c. were built after the giant quake which rang church bells in Boston destroyed most of the buildings, which were wood for the most part. 200 people died which was quite a lot considering the population then, but the city was quite devastated and they had to start all over for the most part. I am a former NYer and experienced 2 quakes there and I left.
I remember where i was 2 sandy struck my neighborhood i had nothing to eat or drink so we had to go to my grandmas house to stay safe it was so drafty at my house!
Appreciated in NJ....just got power back last night...slept good and gonna go see if I can do something to help out others not fortunate enough....a couple friends lost their homes...many boats. I was thinking about the guy who loses his boat that he loves so much crying over his loss until he hears about his neighbor who lost his house to the sea, when they both find out about the woman who had her two children ripped from her arms to die and how they realize now they've lost very little.Thanku
One problem with that is the unions who did not let any other power trucks help. I was in the storm my brother lost everything. I work saving the animals. This storm was the worse ever. Thank you Alabama for you willing to help many people were upset about the unions sending them back. Hugs and thank you....we are strong still sometimes everyone can use a little help.
I remember this when I lived there. Now I reside in Florida and nyc has absolutely ZERO plan for hurricanes. Just went through IAN and the plan here is far better. NO shortage of anything and no problem getting around
scariest experience of my life, was visiting a relative in ny, manhattan and it hit. we didnt think it would be that big... i thought i was going to die. scary crap
Here on Union Square we had no lights or power. I woke up in the dark, and being the superintendent back then, sprang into action mode. Moments later I heard a tap at my door, thanking God someone was coming by to help, or so I thought. It was my insomniac neighbor downstairs, to whine that my 'heavy walking was keeping him awake.." Whatever. I went out and met others, kind of wandering around, disoriented by the darkness.. Con Ed on 14th street opened its lobby doors and set up areas where people could come in, sit, and charge their cellphones. It became a kind of meeting place and hub, as things moved slowly, through the dark, back into the light. Weird. We saw the best, and the worst of New Yorkers.
@givenup24 I've been like that for a week. I live in New York, Long Island. I literally have no power and its been a week. I had to wait on lines for gas. By foot and car. It's been hard brother.
A Category 1 storm does this much damage?? Wimps! Glad to have moved out of NJ back in '79! Is nice and comfy here in S. Florida-even after surviving five hurricanes in the last 20 years.
I remember back when hurricane sandy happened. I was just an itty bitty 4th grader in safe Minnesota. I remember walking into the living room with my parents sitting on the floor glued to the tv. I saw in giant letters, "hurricane sandy rages." My face fell. I didn't fully understand what was happening but I knew it wasn't good. I watched the report with my parents for about an hour.
What a lot of people didn’t realize is that at this time, almost all of NYC was still running on copper telecom lines. Everyone’s calls and internet were using these lines that run underground. It forced Verizon to completely rip out all of the copper cabling and replace it with fiber. There’s still a lot of copper underground but this absolutely crushed the city’s infrastructure. Google “Verizon nyc sandy cable vault”, you’ll see what I mean.
I was born in Romania, my mother was too poor to take care of me when my father ran off so i was put into an Orphanage. The place was terrible, poor, nothing to do it was practicably a shack...after living in those conditions for a while i was put up for adoption and came to the US where my life got better.. I went from Rags to where i am now.. so don't assume and judge people you don't know... i know whats its like to have your life ripped away from you... Thats what made me a stronger person
Im from germany anderen ive been to ny exactly a year ago. I cried when i saw this... I loved ny anderen now it looks like a City after a disastermovie Ort something...
I live in the South Bronx, and Soundview was unaffected but come on......What hit NY was like heavy winds, compared to toll the Caribbean took. Especially Haiti.
And now 9 years later we're dealing with corona !!! Man U cant say never say never

I hear ya. I don’t know what’s happening, it’s truly scary. But...we NYer’s always pull thru! Stay safe & healthy, we’ll make it thru this!
Actually 8 years :/
But Manchester is blue sir

Can’t believe it’s going to be 10 years wow

Ms. Vital Survival it’s a good thing the city didn’t have a serious damage
Mankiran Kamaal I call that serious damage.
And to think that was the result of a Category-1 without much rainfall. Yes it was during high tide, collided with a nor’easter, and was one of the largest tropical cyclones ever. Nick Gold you sound very casual, and you didn’t give any details.
thanks for posting this :-D
"The Perfect Storm" movie is actually almost identical to this storm, in terms of development
*I remembered that school was closed for weeks*
My school was closed for a week
mine was closed for 2 days and it was in Brighton beach ny
I’m thankful I live in Crown Heights (Middle of brooklyn). All we got was some heavy rain.
Thank you for your empathy.
"Never seen anything like this before"

In hurricane sandy a tree blew over in my front yard but not on my house and have another tree that blew down and lastly I have a fence and trampoline Half of it blew over my fence and into my neighbours yard and broke a small peice and fixed it and it still works to this day.

I remember when I was in states island and some people were living with me and my siblings listening to music
Apparently climbing 12 floors by stairs is newsworthy in the US.

Nick Gold You can't spell. "Were," It's we're. *Sigh*
Nick Gold Don't speak for everyone also. Speak for yourself.
Proud Plays And reacts Shut the fuck up
I'm glad that out of an 11 minute and 38 second video, all you took out of it was that. And honestly what was the problem with that? It was showing the changes, even the little ones, caused by the hurricane.

Hi there. I'm looking for somewhere to live that is less decadent. Could you recommend somewhere for me?
Here on Union Square we had no lights or power. I woke up in the dark, and being the superintendent back then, sprang into action mode. So jersey shore from jerseyshore gone? The pier?
Never expected to see a hurricane hit New York.
What a lot of people didn’t realize is that at this time, almost all of NYC was still running on copper telecom lines. Everyone’s calls and internet were using these lines that run underground. Like Your here in 2020, while its August 15th and we are already in our 11th named storm. Breaking 2005’s record.
@Keepskatin Amen! The most wise comment I have read
Good to hear I'm not alone, it's just ABC that can't upload a video with proper sound.

Good answer!!
Sandy affected the subways so bad. It’s the reason why they’re so many delays and even after corona.
