  • Christians, smoking, and drinking alcohol, brings alot of controversy. How should the topics be handled? That is what I aim to gracefully answer in this video.

Hey, Wilson. This is the most well-spoken, biblically guided video I’ve seen on the topic. As a practicing Christian, I %100 agree. Like many in the South, I grew up in the evangelical purity movement, so I feel strongly about this topic after spending some time seeking the truth. Now I enjoy cigars (more so than pipes these days)
in moderation. Thanks so much for your thoughts and for being true to the scriptures. God bless! Bryce

My father was an alcoholic, who came near death twice due to the alcohol and his liver. Accordingly, when I became of age, I made the conscious decision not to drink. For me, it was simply too great a risk, that I might go down the road of my father. My father also was a smoker, who occasionally smoked a pipe. He gave me some of his favorite pipes and I also enjoyed an occasional pipe in my 20's. Over the years, I gave the pipes away. Recently, my grown son felt led to buy me a pipe, like those my father had. When we gathered for family vacation, my grown sons would enjoy a cigar. I simply declined. This was probably the impetus for the one son buying the pipe of my choice. It did draw me back to my own father and, now, I'm enjoying an occasional pipe, and will do so when family gatherings end up with sons enjoying a cigar. For me, pipe smoking was never inherently bad, so I'm okay with enjoying a pipe, as my dad did and with my sons. Alcohol, on the other hand was a problem for me, so I continue to decline. To close, on a positive note, my prayer for my dad was was that he live long enough to know Jesus. Six months before he died, my parents visited us at our duty station in The Netherlands. He came to Jesus during that trip.

@blessing71 - you should and must do as your faith and heart direct you, but living in fear is not of that genre. I understand you growing up with a father like that as I also had a father who was similar in his differences,
and yet fortunately I do not have the gene for alcoholism so I can enjoy a beer or Mai Tai or a gin and tonic from time to time and then walk away and never even think of it again for weeks or months.
If it's a temptation that you fully believe you could not handle then best you stay away, but I hate to see people put themselves under an unnecessary law for the sake of fear or superstition - some cannot handle it where others can - you must know which you are and live accordingly.

When I began reading my Bible, I sat outside with my dog and a cigar. As a chaplain today, it is still one of my most cherished moments in the week.
I was surprised (slightly) how many in church thought this was terrible, including pastors and then I found Charles Spurgeon's quote defending his nightly cigars.

As an alcoholic myself, sober for 5 years, early on in sobriety I was angry at alcohol, bars, people who drank, etc, until I was told that I mustn’t look down on alcohol as an institution. It’s not alcohols fault, the INDIVIDUAL makes the decision to put it inside themselves. Love that quote, thanks brother!

Powerful video bro! It is so great to not only hear tips on Pipe smoking from you but how you bring in Jesus into the videos as well, so awesome. For me, growing up in a family of evangelicals, both my grandpas were pastors and all I heard growing up was, "Drinking is a sin", "smoking is a sin", "watching an R-Rated movie is a sin", the list went on and on and on. Trying to explain to my grandpa and parents was always like hitting a wall with them. I asked my parents a question one day, "Mom, Dad, would Jesus show someone how to sin or even go as far as to help someone commit a sin?"...My parents thought about it and wondering where I was going with this question, "they said, why no, he would definitely NOT do that !"...I then said to them, "if we are in agreement that Jesus would not show someone or help someone commit a sin, then why would Jesus instruct his disciples on how to make wine for the wedding by filling the jars with water that turned to wine?"......Their eyes were wide open and they couldn't answer that as they had never heard that before. I told them, "In the Bible, the only thing Jesus mentioned about wine was, don't get drunk, reason is, if people are drunk, they will end of doing something they will regret later, but Jesus never said anything about it as sin. Let's just say after all these years, they finally realized they had grown up and were raised in a legalistic mindset. The bottom line is, our hearts must burn for more of Jesus daily, obeying what the Holy Spirit directs us to do and sharing the gospel with as many people we meet each day. My 19 year old daughter passed away last year from a rare cancer, we prayed and believed she would be healed, she was healed but she went to Heaven to receive her healing. The last year has been so hard on our family and we miss her tremendously, but we know we will see her again in Heaven and we cannot wait to get there. I hadn't meant to type this much btw. In this day and age we are in with Covid 19, wars, the elections, riots in the streets etc..etc.. Jesus is coming so soon and I pray those who are on the fence about their life in eternity make a decision to choose Jesus before it is too late and that door closes. Life is so short and just a flash. Have a blessed day bud.

Wilson, amazing video! I was raised Assembly of God Pentecostal. Growing up my home was very against drinking, smoking, cursing, ect. I picked up pipe smoking and cigars in my early 20s but I took it to caution, kept it hidden and didn't want anyone to know. I enjoy pipe smoking and I felt no addictive attachment to it. You did a great job explaining and I'm glad you made this video. Some over on my channel have even asked me how my church/family feels about my pipe smoking and truthfully I don't know. I do know that those in my Christian family that do know about my pipe smoking are perfectly okay with it. Again, Thank you for this.

Thoughtful discussion of what is often a sensitive topic. Why sensitive? When it’s pointed out-as you do-that idolatry is the core issue, the Spirit shows us our own idols and we fall silent. I’ll never forget as a kid sitting through a sermon that railed against tobacco. Afterward one of our church’s black sheep stood outside smoking a cigarette. He was young and athletic, and as the visiting preacher came out, the young man softly drawled, “Y’all kinda fat, ain’tcha…” The silence was, as they say, deafening. You put it much more kindly.

I think that if we go by the 'rule of thumb' of moderation, we will be alright. As an alcoholic, I know that I cannot drink at all but most people can drink in moderation and it is no big deal. The same goes with pipe smoking which is just fine as long as we use moderation.

Not only do I understand that it is functionally incomparable to smoking cigarettes, I also want to be ready to explain myself to family and friends, if ever it comes up. I dont plan to do this publicly, but In the event it is brought up, I should at least be above reproach in other areas in my life before I can honestly defend this. I appreciate your maturity to this topic, understanding that this topic being a tool of division IS a reality, and to be flippant about it is to show a lack of love for the Bride of Christ. Love it

A good and balanced talk, sir. I appreciate your posture and approach to this subject. I presume that anyone calling himself theSpurgeonPiper should recognize the following: "God alone is Lord of the conscience, and has left it free from the doctrines and commandments of men which are in any thing contrary to his word, or not contained in it. So that to believe such doctrines, or obey such commands out of conscience, is to betray true liberty of conscience; and the requiring of an implicit faith, an absolute and blind obedience, is to destroy liberty of conscience and reason also."

Unfortunately, many have not been truthful with the Scriptures regarding Christian liberty, the Gospel, the weaker brother, and the stronger brother. At the same time, unfortunately, there are many in the YRR group that seem to desire to flout their Christian liberty in the face of those who disagree with them. Bottom line: conversations about liberty rooted in right exegesis of the Scriptures lead to healthy, biblical fellowship

I am a pastor, a pipe and cigar aficionado (self proclaimed lol) and I don’t see anything wrong with Christians drinking however I strongly urge church leaders and pastors to NOT and here is why: smoking a pipe or cigar they’re natural (99.9%) and it does not alter your mood/attitude/mind, however alcohol does. And I know we say well I know my limit and that’s good and well but look at what happened with Brian Houston of Hillsong. He might had known his limit but it took one time and boom. Misty Edward’s? She knew her limit but one time boom. It takes one time of too much. I love to set back and relax with a mixed drink on the beach, but as a pastor I need to guard my heart and myself. I got to guard my students in the youth. So, I don’t drink alcohol. I don’t have an issue with being addicted to it though my family has had a history of the issue, but I do know when I get drunk I’m very flirty and just friendly and that’s where trouble starts. So, just my 2 cents!

This is a fantastic video. Appreciate the open dialogue. As a non-denominational Christian I appreciate you sharing your thoughts. One point I’m curious about though, and I thought of it only in listening to your video that ties to the sanctity of the human body. Can the argument not be made that the partaking of anything “harmful” simply because of the pleasure it brings be considered defiling the temple that is the human body? And in so doing, become that sin? Bear in mind, I do smoke and drink occasionally, so I’m certainly not arguing, but am curious about your thoughts here
    Cheers brother and be well.

    • @TheSpurgeonPiper
      @TheSpurgeonPiper  Před 3 lety +3

Hey Adam, thanks for the kind words. Off the cuff, I would say no for two reasons. 1) The category of what is "harmful" isnt quite black and white. Though many would outright deem alcohol "harmful", Scripture speaks of it in a positive light at times, especially in the OT. It is seen as a sign of blessing for the OT people in various passages. On the other end, some foods could be considered "harmful" (heavily processed foods for example) but very few would say it would be sinful to eat a Twinkie, pizza, etc.
      2) Pauls says in 1 Cor 10:31, "So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God." And 1 Tim 4:4, "For everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving." The issue isnt the object itself but the disposition that couldnt give "glory to God" or "receive it with thanksgiving".
      I appreciate the comment!

10:44 the issue is the heart. You are so right!!! Just as those who are enslaved by their passions to drink or tobacco (or anything else) so are those who condemn it (the physical object) by any means are falling to pride, which is father of all sin, and are often standing in judgement of others (so both pride and judgement).

Great talk. Does addiction really be where sin enters? I know most coffee drinkers are dependent on it. Does that then make it sinful? I think it's more about damaging our body or not caring for it properly than the dependence. Ultimately it's that it doesn't get in the way of our loving and serving God and others.

As someone who loves coffee, that is an important question. Personally, I have cut down my coffee intake (only drinking it in mornings usually) without any major issues. But it no doubt can/is an addiction for some.
Does addiction really be where sin enters? I'd say so. When this topic comes up with others in my church, I ask the other person, "Are you dominated by ?" The apostle Paul is helpful here where he says in 1 Cor 6:12 "All things are lawful but I will not be dominated by anything." If it is dominating me in any way, I need to address it.

basically EVERYTHING that keeps you away from being on your knees in intense prayer or doing good deeds like feeding the poor and caring for the elderly etc is a sin. That includes coffee, watching TV, reading non-religious literature, or being, just like me, on the internet browsing around watching pipe vids, smoking a pipe, sleeping too much, eating chocolate, staring at the neighbours jiggly hooters, being agitated in traffic etc. These are all sins more or less and in one way or the other. In an ideal world we would spend our entire day praying and repenting and lead a monastic type of life. However we humans are very weak and we will never reach that level of holiness. But that doesnt mean that we should give up and go totally loose. We can enjoy our pipes, but we have to keep in mind that in an ideal world we wouldnt. and that it is a form of sinning.
At the end of the day we still need to ask God for forgiveness about it, and the many many other things we did during the day

As a reformed Baptist I say, cheers. I have a very old personally signed Spurgeon book. Not to me obviously, I’m not that old. It was a hand written note at the beginning of the book to a woman that supported one of his orphanages. Signed by his brother as well. I’m guessing that was before they had their fall out in the downgrade controversy. Soli Deo Gloria

Hit the nail on the head.....it’s a heart issue, we have this thing called choice. God put Adam and Eve in a perfect place but still gave them a choice to obey. Galatians 6:7 “whatsoever a man sows that shall he also reap”. If a person were to “sow” by chain smoking 4 packs of cigarettes a day they’d likely “reap” emphysema, COPD, or some form of cancer. If a person were to “sow” by eating only 3 apple pies a day then they’d likely “reap” high blood sugar! diabetes, and other health issues due to an unbalanced diet. Moderation is the key and being conscious to not cause another to stumble. Thanks for sharing, keep on spreading the good news!

I don't have long conversations about this. If I encounter another Christian who thinks it's wrong for me to smoke my pipe, I just point them to Narnia and say "Don't be a Nikabrik; be a Trumpkin." (Trumpkin smoked a pipe and danced; Nikabrik did neither). Nikabrik's extreme asceticism ended up leading him to trying to call back the White Witch to defeat Miraz.

Great job and courage on you! I am Eastern Orthodox so this is not an issue for us but I know it is for Protestants. God created all things for good. It is how we use them that makes them sinful.

Hello sister. Im also Orthodox. I enjoy smoking pipe and taking nasal snuff. However it is still a sin. But so are many other things. drinking coffee, sexual intercourse, eating too much, sleeping too much and the list goes on and on.
Basically anything that keeps us away from spending time on our knees in prayer and repentance or to do good deeds like feeding the poor and caring for the elderly etc is a sin in one way or the other.
In an ideal world we would not use any stimulants at all, coffee, tea, sugar, tobacco or waste time on things like watching tv, internet, reading non-religious literature etc etc. In an ideal world we would pray the Jesus prayer on our knees non stop, strictly adhere to our fasting rules and lead a life like our Holy dessert fathers did,.... basically a monastic life style. This is what the Orthodox ideal is
However we are far from perfect. Ofcourse we can enjoy a glass of gin tonic or have a slice of delicious sticky moist chocolate cake or smoke a pipe. But we still have to keep in mind that it is a form of sin... even tho a teeny tiny one and even if it seems harmless and innocent.
In our Orthodox Churches it is indeed not an issues. simply because basically all Orthodox people know this naturally. its as if this is in our genes or something. lol.
Cheers. and may the never-ending prayers of our Most Holy Theotokos be with you.

Bro. Good vid. As a preacher my self, you hit the nail on the head. In this case it is the heart ❤️ not the the item that causes sin. I was an independent Baptist preacher for years and grew up in the 70’s where everything you did was hell bound activity. A lot of this came from the Billy Sunday and Pentecostal movement decades ago. You basically would have to live in a closet and have meals slipped under the door. LOL Back in the day you were guilt tripped to death when dealing with these topics. Not much Christian liberty at work. Good review with this.

I always fall on Romans 14 and "disputable matters"... some try to argue that the weak ones are the ones partaking in disputable matters, but I think its pretty clear that its the opposite. Those that shy away from them out of fear are those that are weaker in faith. Let me be clear: its not a competition, and that statement is not knocking those individuals... to each their own. Nonetheless, they need to embrace the same concept of "to each their own" on those grey areas and understand the freedom within them. There should be no judgment on either side, and their needs to be understanding on both ends.

  • @persecutedbiblebeliever5493

Good. You alluded to sound Scriptural truth. Christian liberty in that which is not specifically declared as evil, should be handled with an attitude of grace in dealing with our fellow Christians, as long as it does not cause a brother or sister to stumble. As you probably know, Charles Haden Spurgeon smoked cigars--until he deemed he was influencing his preacher boys poorly; then he stopped. Spurgeon would not allow a brother to stumble over his personal liberty. That being said, we must respect and care for the Temple of The Holy Spirit (our bodies) as best we can--both ours and our brothers. TEMPERANCE IN ALL THINGS.

I grew up and live in Alabama. My Southern Baptist Church taught no drinking..cussing .dancing..dipping..card playing..movies..and NO lottery!!! But as I matured in the faith and been pastoring for 34 years I realized that I was a legalist and not a very compassionate christian. But now that I hold to the Reformed Baptist position I believe in christian liberty.
Drunkenness is a sin but drinking no. But I respect everyone's position.

What about caffeine? I see it in church. They serve tea / coffee. Taboos are a man-made item. Hence like he said the heart is the key and also moderation. I as a pipe smoker don't do it every day or even multiple times a day. When I do enjoy my pipe it is always outside, by myself, and great reflection time. Good example is tonight, I spent a very beautiful fall mid-west weather in the hot tub. During this time I did thank God for the night, the smells, the stars, and all the minor nuances of beauty in the world that is taken for granted.

  • @pipesmokercowboychris

Alcohol isn't a sin in itself, but what you do with it. I'm a Lutheran and we use wine for communion, but will do special if someone has problems. Pipe or just tobacco use in general isn't a sin at least in my opinion. Very good video.

Great video. Being a Pentecostal and smoking a pipe is pretty rough. Im not convicted of smoking a pipe and im pretty sure when i walk into my church the aroma of my clothes and beard are a dead give away. I don't feel convicted of my pipe smoking but it is an addiction. I moved from smoking cigarettes to pipe smoking because i know pipe tobacco is better than cigarette tobacco.
I think one of the biggest problems with people in the Pentecostal sect of Christianity is a lack of mercy on people who struggle, and that may be well said of all Christianity. I just keep in mind, if we could conquer sin ourselves, then Christ carried the cross up that lowly hill in vain. And he didn't. ❤❤❤
Thank God for our Heavenly Father, his Son Jesus Chist, and the Holy Spirit who seals us for the day of redemption.🥳💓

catholic churches lot of the time let people drink wine at a stage in the ceremony
Eastern Orthodox Churches mix up breadcrumbs and wine and give every person a spoonfull during the ceremony

Everyone has his or her own relationship with God, and there is no one path to grace and a good life, you will be guided by your conscience but judged by your heart. I'm not particularly religious and certainly not an organised church kind of guy, so maybe I have no place to comment, but lol.
My take on God and alcohol is symple. Did Jesus turn water into wine or fruit juice? Do Catholics not use wine to represent the Lords blood, I think the key is moderation controlling your drinking, not the other way round.
As for smoking, I agree that pipes cigars and cigarettes are different beasts ( although I enjoy all 3). I can understand the objection to cigarettes as they have the addictive element and therefore the control issue, but pipes in particular are an inward reflection tool that help us who use them to work through our thoughts and deeds both good and bad to hopefully become better and i find a pipe smoking pastor not only acceptable but reassuring as it shows he is a thoughtful man at least. Greed and gluttony and excess may be sinful, but when we were cast out of paradise for our sins and life was made hard, women caused to endure the trials of birth and man to toil on the land would not the God that made us that loved us and knew our frail nature not allow us a few simple pleasures to make life a little more bearable. I don't just think God doesn't mind these things I think he gifted them to us, and like all his great gifts they are to be enjoyed but not overly exploited. Keep it moderate and be thankful for His simple gifts of peace.

Smoke 'em if you got 'em! Slam 'em or Dram 'em if you have 'em! ...."ALL things are PERMISSIBLE....not all things are BENEFICIAL." Those are the two operative words. Moderation is key for some Abstinence is good for others. @ the end of the day only God will know one's heart...(which is the heart of this message). If i were drinking atm id lift a glass to you (lifting coffee instead) but most certainly smoking a bowl with all the liberty that surpasses all understanding! ✌😎

I think you’re right. I’ve felt the same for a long time now. I’m 62. Sin is all about mistakes. Taking things to extremes. Bad decisions. Not about the specific detail of our everyday life. We’re all going to die one day. We won’t be judged on some puritanical scale. I feel if it takes me further from God , don’t do it.

  • @vjazz79

Wilson, spoken like a caring shepherd. All things in moderation. Not all things are sinful but anything can bcom sin (i.e. working too much, lack of financial discipline, attitudes, etc). Scripture & a personal level of conviction should drive our actions. Ultimately (despite what 'we' think or feel) if the Holy Spirit brings something to our understanding (good or bad) it is sin & idolatry to reject or resist His promptings. Very good discussion. I dare say, we should have more of these (over a pipe)!
