- In Colombia, cultivation of coca, the main ingredient of cocaine, has nearly tripled over the past five years. As part of the 2016 peace agreement between the government and the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), the country has embarked on a unique experiment to try to end coca farming and production, but freeing Colombia from its cocaine problem is proving difficult. Charlet Duboc travels to the remote towns where coca farming is a way of life to examine the struggle for a cocaine-free Colombia.

The leaves are grown legally in Peru, the locals brew them into teas, as well as just chew them. It is very helpful with altitude sickness in the high Andes (especially for travellers)

I was in Bogota in a club in a bad area, my friends friend was just ordering stuff from the waiter. The waiter would go outside and come back. A gram of coke was only about $3.33 USD. Joints about 50 cents. Some places sell joints for about 33 cents.

3. People sell cocaine
If you want to get rid of the problem then legalize.

Killings would not stop, rivalry will still continue and corrupt politicians and police will never be put to justice since they were given a jail free card. Plus its effects, the only thing that the government can do is to identify the problem in the society and address it. Cocaine is more than just addiction, it reflects the least concern in the society and the problems stirring from it.
Like the guy says there's no way to completely get rid of the drug. There will always be a demand so why don't we legalize the drug. When we legalize the drug we put it in the category of cigarettes. This will kill you but it is ur choice as an adult if u want to do this. It takes money from cartels who are in the business, puts tax money into the economy, it's regulated making it safer and you know it's not loaded with impurities, farmers and pickers of the leaves will have a stable job
I agree with you but it's not that simple. Millions of people are addicted to drugs now, imagine if those drugs were legal, millions more would become addicted, eventually leading to more spending from health services etc. It would literally become an epidemic. It's a 2-sided argument for sure.
Adding to what Billbo Froggins said, I think that legalizing cocaine would also normalize kinds of behaviour and motivations that are common among people who think it's okay to deal with narcotics. For example, as far as I can tell tobacco companies are known to be among the most ruthless in their business practice, I don't think you'd want more of that.

Great to see this presenter back. She previously did a great food tour series.
Really hoping there's a full episode or something that goes into greater detail than this. No mention of the fact that the Colombian government has failed to keep their promise, as part of the peace deal, to protect the farmers that were forced to switch from growing coca leaves to other crops despite the fact that they're under constant death threats from fringe paramilitary groups that profit from coca production and have moved in in the wake of the power vacuum created by the FARC leaving those production areas. The fact that financial resources to police the areas where this stuff is grown don't actually reach their destination (graft) plays a large part in explaining the inability to curb production post-peace deal.
Switzerland is known for watches, Germany for their cars, USA for weapons and among them all Colombia is known for cocaine.
Regardless of anything, one can not deny the fact that it has very high demand in the world. So in case authorities want that to stop, don't go after the suppliers because the demand will still be there and someone will have to produce it.

I was just in Armenia Colombia last month visiting wifes family. Was there for 2 weeks. Had such a good time. People where great, food was wonderful. I didn't feel in danger at any time. In what part of colombia is this going on? Is it closer to the borders?

I've watched a BBC reporter and now a Vice reporter enter the fields where the coca plant is processed, but for some strange reason the "Authorities" can't locate the processing plant. Interesting.......
You have to respect that guy making it, yeah cocaine is very bad for the world but he's doing what he can to make money to feed his family whatever the risk.
