If you're trying this project for yourself, I recommend using a fairy godmother instead which makes this process much quicker and easier.
That may be true, but you only get to keep the dress till the midnight.

@@EvlNabiki I'm afraid I can't vouch for the store-bought ones. My local stores don't sell them but you might have luck if you try.
True, but you have a time limit, and the fairy godmother you use can end up a bit crazy
Your patience in dealing with so many frilly, slippery layers while sewing seam after seam *and* filming the entire process is incredible! And the result is absolutely stunning!!!
When she was spinning around in that Movie Accurate petticoat having the time of her life . I was so happy for her. So many layers. So much pain. A master of her craft 🥺🥺😭❤️

One of my favorite things about the dress in the movie is the incredible amount of movement in the skirt. It looks like you are doing a great job in replicating all of that movement.

If you could only see my face at the end of this video. It is such a pleasure to see how close you got to the real thing. It moves just like the one in the film. I'm in awe.

I’m curious if you have calculated how many miles of seams you have sewn on this? I did a wedding dress years ago that had nearly a mile of seaming and it was nowhere near as fluffy and beautiful and detailed as this is. C’est manufique!

I’m a electrical / mechanical robotic machinery engineer, I build install some amazing bits of machinery, but I must say following your story recreating what is arguably one of the most beautiful gowns ever made, makes my work look easy, I applaud you 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

never mind how many yards of fabric, just how many MILES of sewing thread did you use ?
I used 3000 yards of thread to hem all the flounces, and probably about 500 yards making the petticoat.

Nice, I've been following this project for months now. I commend you for undertaking such a massive project all by yourself. That must be daunting to take on so many tasks such as patterning, cutting stitching, etc. All these are normally separate jobs in a costume shop. Some things I learned with working with these fabrics is to baste before cutting so that the fabric doesn't manipulate itself., and also using stabilizer while sewing seams so that the Seans themselves don't stretch causing uneven hems.. Normally, you can troubleshoot a lot of these factors but with 9lbs of fabric, the extra stress on the under layers does end up with a less than symmetrical shape. Again, you are doing the work of 25 people, and it looks beautiful. Just figured I'd chime in, because I love what you do.
Baste before cutting what ? (This is helpful to me too haha)
@@ln8784 you baste the delicate fabrics together before cutting them. you can't use weights because that also can stretch it. and the scissors cause the fabric to also slide slightly. I even seen people cut really delicate chiffon while it was hanging in order to get a good cut. Cutting is an art form in itself and very different.... it can really delay stitching when fabric isn't cut and marked correctly.
@@dchaissejohnsier ahh thank you! Do you only need to do this when she’s working with 2 or more layers ontop of eachother? It would be a Crazy amount of extra time if you did it for every single piece
@@ln8784 I would do it on all seems. A teflon foot might help the pulling as well. It is time consuming and costly. That’s why I commend her on doing the work of probably 5-10 people. Sewing is always a ticking time bomb. It is always 10,000 times more complicated then it looks.
@@dchaissejohnsier wait just so I get it right, are you supposed to baste every single piece before you cut anything out of the fabric , or only baste together the seams of 2 pieces of already cut fabric , before sewing them down and attaching them ?

The amount of floof that is this petticoat makes me REALLY happy to see you swoosh about in. I want to make something like this for myself, just in a gradient of medium pink to lighter-than-baby-pink-but-not-white (from inside to outside) with the other skirt looking like an upside down rose

I told my mom that I was determined to make a wedding dress with this skirt style, I am not in a relationship nor am I getting married any time soon. She told me I was crazy but I am determined and I have begun my research! Because this is definitely a project that's going to take some time.
For those making this gorgeous petticoat, those "little triangles' at the waistband would add additional bulk to the waistband and hip line. The shape of the triangles is formed by the top of the godets getting stitched directly flat to the base petticoat. Keeping as few layers at the waist is important to maintaining that narrowest point of the corseted shape at the waist without unnecessary bulk.
That depends on if you want to be period correct or just costumey.
PC petticoats have a drop waist to remove the bulk from the waist, with flounces spaced out to give the proper fluff. Godets aren't used in Victorian dresses. It's all in how you gather the fabric.
Extant ballgowns are quite gorgeous and move freely due to the cages underneath.
You did a fabulous job on this petticoat! It took an incredible amount of patience and skill. I'm intermediate level with sewing but I want to be like you when I grow up.
Just think how easily you could socially distance in that petticoat 💕

Truly Victorian has a couple of nice cages (the proper term) patterns to use for the base. She's using the Elliptical cage.
A crinoline is a type of petticoat.
There are many good patterns from Past Patterns, Truly Victorian and Laughing Moon for corsets, chemises, drawers, and flounced skirts. (This is what the dress is based upon.)
Make sure to use cotton or linen for the foundation garments for breathability or you'll be sweating like a pig with all those layers, especially if polyester is involved (it doesn't breathe at all).
The cage is made from sprung steel which is flexible and strong enough to hold up lots of petticoat layers.
The corset not only gives the right body shape, but also helps support all the weight of the cage and petticoats. (I don't reccomend wearing those layers without one. It'll hurt.)
@@JenniferBristol Oh ok, cages and any sort of hooped petticoat are called crinoline in french (my 1st language)
I know TV has an elliptical cage but the shape is different. I also know about the other pattern companies. I've bought a few for different projects.
However, I like to support creators I follow from time to time and I've been watching her content since her previous cinderella ballgowns. 🙂
@@NerdySillyGirl it's actually the same exact shape as the cage she has. Plus, there are suppliers for corset and cage parts that not everyone realizes is out there.
We can still support a creator like her by also pointing her in the right direction, too, so she can also point people to those sources, and then add her modifications.
I think it's great she's helping ladies see the fantasy side of what historical reenactors do, and getting them interested in dressing up, too. That's how ladies and gentlemen find out about Dickens, Civil War, Gold Rush, Wild West, Revolutionary, Rendezvous, and other historical events, besides cosplay to dress up for.
It's fun to dress up in another era, and play.
@@JenniferBristol you're actually quite rude aren't you? I tried staying open minded after your 1st message but you insist on what you think is right. If you've followed the entire series you would have known that she wanted to recreate a copy of the original cage, which is not the same as the TV one.
You like historical recreation, yeah ok, you're not the only one. You assumed I didn't know anything about sewing nor historical costuming and came with a preachy tone. There's no "one correct" way to do it. Especially concerning a cosplay.

There was something someone said (possibly Sandy not too sure) where they said that all the layers and colours of the dress were supposed to give the feel of an ocean wave. This completely captures that it looks so beautiful!
I am sure that the original designer of the Dress knocks on your door with a bunch of flowers, wine and cheese!!! The dress looks and flows/falls right as the original film dress in the film. Here's a horror story for you: Imagine having to sew all of this by hand.
I make all of my stuff by hand because 1. I don't have backup needles or my sewing machine. 2. I don't know how to thread a sewing machine 🤣
