There also exists the kind of mixed public saunas where people do wear swimwear. It's usually the kind of places where people go winter swimming. The variety of rules and different places might be confusing. I think it has to do with the outside area being public also to non-saunagoers and because both the sauna and the dressing rooms are entered directly from the outside.

Lol...the nudity is not a big deal when you have grown up to it that you see other people nude no matter what their sex is. Since families usually go together in sauna you end up seeing both of your parents nude. I think the problem that other cultures have with nudity is that it is so tightly tied to sexuality what it is not in this country. Those are two different things and seeing someone nude doesn't hurt anyone. When you include other things to it that it where the damage starts to come into the picture. I find it often really funny how hysterical attitude there is towards nudity in other places *coughUScough*. What comes to the vihta, what is the birch branches tied together called, besides the other explanations you have already gotten here is one more. If you have noticed when you sit in sauna your skin starts to peel the dead layer off so if you scratch or rub your skin you end up having this loose material over your skin and under your nails. Beating yourself with vihta helps that process, well as long as you don't go violent with it lol, so that when you go wash yourself after the sauna you are able to wash that dead layer off from yourself.

😂😂😂😂that's very true. I am learning that nudity doesn't mean something sextual. And with those leaves, Al go easy on them 😂😂

It's funny how so many Finnish people say there's nothing sexual going to sauna naked, especially with strangers with the opposite sex. Nudity in this day and age is always tied to sexuality and Finland is no exception. There's a reason most saunas and locker rooms are divided by gender. Most people are naturally uncomfortable being naked with other people, especially with the opposite sex because of the unavoidable and undeniable biological sexual tension between sexes. Most of us can behave and keep our composure with the opposite sex, but some can't, even when fully clothed, so why risk it?
Many women would think to themselves: "Hmm, I wonder if he's got something sexual in his mind and will do something to me?" and many men think that: "I truly hope she's not thinking that I have something sexual in my mind and will do something to her." That's understandably uncomfortable for both, and this doesn't occur when you're with people of the same sex.
Family members are sometimes different, especially when the children are little, but it would be quite awkward today for everyone if we were to go to sauna naked either with my mom or my sister, let alone my teenage daughter, who I've told very early that she won't have to come to sauna with me anymore when she so decides. Of course she now only goes with her mother these days, as it should be. My sister is a year younger than me, and we reached puberty about the same time, and we haven't been to sauna together naked ever since. And why should we?

@@Tauno211 Right, I too am pretty used to having sauna with the guys after the women have had their turn. But it's probably also an effect of people not having big saunas anymore. The one in my home seats three people, or four if we're good friends. Same for the sauna in my old friend's summer place. If there's more than those four people it makes sense to take turns anyway so ladies first. If there's just the 3-4 that can comfortably sit it makes no difference to me if someone's wife or girlfriend prefers to not go alone. I'm there for sauna.

I once met a guy originating from Guinea at a town of Gordoba, Spain and he asked me if there is racisim in Finland. I told him that first thing we do is strip him naked and then put him in to a 100 celsius wooden shed and then we force him in to a freezing lake or sea and he has to do this back and forth for several times. The look on he's face was priceless 😂

This is not only the case in Finland. In all German- and Dutch-speaking areas of Europe, saunas are usually naked and mixed up.

At least last time I was in Caribia SPA in Turku, the steam sauna was like you described. Normal saunas are separate in public places. For me it doesn't feel all that odd. :)
The birch branches thing is called vihta or vasta, gives a really nice smell and you are not supposed to be beat someone silly, just so blood circulation gets activated and it feels good.
Edit, the music at the start is rather loud compared to you talking..
