So today I'm revealing two new bags to my collection (I think you guys have already seen the third!). I purchased the Gucci bag at a consignment store in Palm Beach. The other two I bought on eBay from Japanese sellers. This was my first experience with buying preloved designer goods from Japan. I've always been wowed by their comparably low prices and I finally bit the bullet! Plus, it didn't hurt to be getting cashback from Ibotta (Check the link below)
I purchased from two different sellers and the both came with varying levels of "old" or "musty" odor. The Louis Vuitton bag is from 2013, while the Gucci is vintage and over 30 years old. Obviousy the vintage piece smelled worse, but I have to admit I was quite surprised that the newer LV had one as well. (Also, as a note: this was completely disclosed in the eBay listings, and I purchased knowing that these bags were going to need some TLC!)

KWShops Yes, I’ve purchased a couple of vintage Louis Vuitton bags from Japanese sellers on eBay and they have ALL smelled. I’ve also noticed the lining in pockets have peeling on vintage bags. Although I hate the musty odors and cleaning the bags can be tedious and a pain, the prices are great so that’s why I continue to buy.
I've purchased a lot of vintage and newer LV from Japan. My rule is to not purchase anything with sticky or peeling pockets (usually caused by humidity), and I've never had one item smell of anything at all so far. Even a couple of items that were listed as possibly having storage odor had none.
I just purchased 2 vintage beauties from EBay and I can’t wait til they get to me so that I can work on them.

KWShops i purchased a 2002 LV looping Gm from a Japanese seller on EBay. The bag was in great condition except for the smell. Just like your Gucci I was able to pull the lining out of the bag and clean it. I put the dust bag in the washer, cleaned and conditioned the vachetta and cleaned the canvas with alcohol free baby wipes and the smell is completely gone

I’ve restored several vintage Gucci bags by carefully dry brushing the lining using a suede brush to remove all the flakes. Your method using the Bissell is much, much faster! Did 2 bags that way and they turned out great. Thanks for posting!

Saw this video and got inspired and now just starting to explore the vintage world (why I never thought of this before!). My first purchase of vintage purse is a Burberry crossbody bag all prestine condition, the strap has sign or usage but still good, but dirt and flaking inside. The dirt is like charcoal ( my husband's words) which is on point. But I scrubbed it with handsome and diet came off and I see inside is brighter color. So I have a new vintage purse and very spacious! Happy to have found your video and channel!

Here’s a tip for the smell get a car air fresher the ones you hang place the air fresher in a ziplock bag poke a few holes in place in the bag & just keep doing that once a week trust me the smell will go away my vintage celine clutch had the worst smell ever lol

Yes! I just talked about ibotta and ebay bucks on my pre-loved site comparison video :) I am loving the hair and the estrela! Every bag I've bought from Japan has had an odor, too. Some are musty or moldy from previous users but all of the big sellers stored the bags in these warehouses so even the newer ones that were taken care of by their previous owner will still have some musty storage smell. I often buy the bags without that kind of lining so if I can't use some upholstery product like you did, I often do a mixture of vinegar and water and it cleans and helps remove odors as well. What are your thoughts on the Jeanne wallet I had it in my cart and I have yet to pull the trigger because my folio case from LV has had glazing cracking after only 2 months and I know LV’s wallets are all glazed and now I’m not sure I have a Lv vintage card case that I love with a snap it’s smaller than the regular card cases I find it fits perfectly in my smaller bags love the other vintage Gucci too $100 for it that is surely a significant savings way to go ! Great finds !

I like your handbags I do the same buy pre-loved and have to clean them at times I use a blow dryer to dry them off .on your louis vuitton you can put a different strap on it . if you want to change up once in awhile.

I purchased a LV speedy 30 and it's got that vintage, old basement smell. It doesn't have lining, so no idea how to clean it on the inside and get rid of the smell. If anybody has any tips, I really appreciate it!

Hi- I have a vintage gucci camera bag, but the zipper is broken and won't catch. You mentioned a cobbler in your video. Do you think they would be able to fix zippers? if not- do you have any recommendations? Thanks!
For zipper replacement (or any part replacement), I would honestly try the gucci repair services instead of a local cobbler. Just to ensure correct parts/colors are used. Also, authentication can be difficult with independent repair work.
For bags, I let my local cobblers do things like re-sew, clean and dye if necessary
...unless it’s leather surgeons. They can do anything!

Sadly I returned my Gucci 1973 ... the bag was just too small and the chain was really long on me (I’m about 5’5”).
If you have a larger phone, like an iPhone+ I don’t think it would fit inside. I also carry this as a clutch by tucking the chain

Why does vintage bags have smell ? Thanks for your response.
Vintage bags at times have a odor to them based on how old the bag is, it will develop a smell overtime ever got a brand new bag and it smells fresh its the opposite from a vintage bag that has been use and worn it no longer has that fresh smell.

I’m thinking it was the fuzz from the material itself (micro-suede). Another reason I’m not a huge fan of this lining material. I’m no expert in textiles, but I don’t feel that this bag bag was cared for the way it should have been over the years.
