MOON KNIGHT: Is the Third Personality Actually His Arch-Enemy? | HIDDEN VILLAIN Explained

  • Moon Knight's third episode confirms that there is a third personality in the show--someone who alarms even Marc with his brutality. So who is this new alter? We think that it's Moon Knight's original villain: Raul Bushman. Bushman is the mercenary who originally hired Marc and left him for dea din the desert--and then killed Marlene's father (adapted to be Layla in the show).
It could that Marc thinks another man killed her father, but it was actually this brutal alter ego. Someone who is so bloodthirsty that Marc hid his existence form himself.

This just confirmed that there is a third identity in the show. And based on the body count and the brutality, this alter is something completely different. The mystery personality is a huge change from the comics.
So we got to try and answer who is the 3rd personality and what does that mean for Marc and Steven.
We think we know exactly who the 3rd personality really is.
And if we are right about our prediction, the identity of the mystery alter could be one of the show’s biggest and most shocking twists yet.
In the 1st episode, we saw the crazy switcheroo between Marc and Steven, as they swapped control over the body.
There is this moment in the first episode, where Steven finds himself surrounded by bodies. Carnage we assumed was caused by Marc.
There is a similar moment in episode 3. But this time it’s Marc that finds himself surrounded by bodies. And Steven is certainly not responsible for this bloodbath.
And so this means only one thing - there is another identity sharing the same body with Marc and Steven.
Before we theorize on who this 3rd alter might be, we got to explain Moon Knight’s other personalities in the comics, because this will make it easier to explain how it plays out in the show.
We covered Moon Knight’s multiple identities in length in this video, so I promise we won’t dive into the comics too much. Especially because they are making so many changes to the nature of the alters.
As I’m sure you are aware by now, Marc Specter suffers from dissociative identity disorder, a mental illness that causes him to manifest multiple personalities. In the comics he has a lot, but there are 5 main alters. There’s Marc, the initial identity. Then there’s Moon Knight, Marc’s vigilante persona. Mr Knight, who is a vigilante detective.
Marc has 2 main civilian alters, both created to infiltrate all forms of society.
The first is Steven Grant. In the comics he’s a billionaire playboy philanthropist, who grants Marc access to high society.
And finally there’s Jake Lockley. A taxi driver who serves as Marc’s eyes and ears on the streets.
Fans have been wondering if they will even see the Jake persona in the show. And now we might have gotten our answer, the mystery identity is most likely Jake Lockley.
But he’s going to be drastically different in the MCU.
After all, Steven is not a rich businessman, he’s quite the opposite of his counterpart in the comics.
There’s also Mr Knight, and he was altered for the show as well. Instead of being a cerebral detective, Mr Knight seems to be simply Steven’s masked identity. Though the suit the snazzy allows Steven to gain a lot of confidence.
All of this means that Jake Lockley is going to be altered for the show as well. He is presented as a brutal and deadly personality. So it’s doubtful he will be a taxi driver, unless he’s a taxi driver like Travis Bickle. Now that will be awesome!
But the Jake persona will be a lot more obscure than that.
So here’s how I believe it could work.
When Marc started working as a mercenary, his life was in constant danger, he was always in life and death situations - even before becoming Moon Knight.
Marc might be ferocious who has no problem inflicting pain and even death, but he’s not a murderous savage. He has conscience and moral rules. But his job required him to be ruthless, kill without asking questions.
His mental disorder began protecting him from his killings. His mind created a new personality, a scapegoat to carry the burden of the trail of bodies he left behind. And thus, Jake Lockley was created.
Marc’s dark side, his murderous alter, the one that has no limits.
Steven and Jake represent the extremes of Marc’s nature, two polar opposite aspects of his personality.
Steven acts as Marc’s softer and kinder nature, while Jake represents his more vicious and deadly side.

I think "Jake" also appeared somewhere else in the show so far too. I think a different personality asked Steven's coworker out for thar steak date cause it definitely wasn't Steven and I doubt it was Marc. I also think Steven being caught on camera after the bathroom fight was also the other personality and not Marc. Marc would've been smart enough to hide from the cameras and wouldn't have wanted Steven to lose his job. The other personality won't have cared.

Agreed. I think Jake will be a bit of a Patrick Bateman type. Charming, smart, but also kinda always calculating murder. Jake might have killed Layla's dad not knowing who he was. If Marc has experienced his DID prior to Khonshu, Jake might have been his main alter with Steven emerging after Marc tries going into hiding. I think Jake is aware of both and protects them as needed. The date is his attempt to get them to move on from Layla. He makes sure that Steven never wakes up in the cot by taking over from Marc post suit. He replaces the fish and the door tape to keep Steven's little bubble intact. But then something happened to Jake, throwing him off of the balancing act he was doing between Marc and Steven, probably something to do with the scarab. And I think Khonshu knows-he refers to "the one who controls the body". Makes sense if Jake acts as the facilitator between Spector and Grant.

I don’t want Jake to be evil. Dark protector would be good. Like he also just wants to protect Steven and the world, but he’s totally on board with utilizing violence to do so. He replaced the goldfish and asked out the coworker, and he’ll be the one to save Khonshu even though Marc and Steven both hate him because he’ll say they need him.

OR he hates Khonshu just as much since Khonshu doesn't say anything about even noticing the third personality. Could be the third personality, if it is Jake, doesn't hold back or show fear or be cowed by the god. After all Arthur said Khonshu can't really do anything to his Avatar, so having one that you can't control is...well frightening.
But hero or villain (or perhaps in-between) the third guy, if he's Jake or not, is going to be very interesting.

I'm with you on being okay with a dark protector willing to cross lines in extreme situations to keep Marc and Steven safe who isn't actually an evil, deranged killer. There are already way, way, WAY too many 'this person is mentally ill and therefore totally going to kill you in your sleep' characters out there, when in reality, the person someone with a mental illness is most likely to kill, by a longshot, is themselves. Depictions of mental illness as dangerous to other people is part of WHY suicide is so common -- people don't feel like they can reach out for help, or they do reach out for help and the people they reach out to are afraid of them. Marvel has never let me down before when they've tackled difficult subjects, and I'm going to be really unhappy if this is where they screw it all up.
I don't know if anyone from Screen Rant is reading this comment, but if you are: Please think over the implications of the stories you're advocating for, because this is irresponsible, insensitive, and honestly I would have expected something like this from some of the other Marvel commentators out there, but not you. I'm disappointed. You're better than this.

@@purplecat4977 i see what you’re saying and I agree to a certain degree because I do think it could potentially glorify or at the very least contribute to the stigma, as you suggest, but mental illness CAN hurt other people- that’s the burden isn’t it? So yeah maybe killing would be extreme but excessive violence wouldn’t be too far off from the certain burdens mental illness brings, like say an abused individual projects their abuse on others around them; this is kind of what they’re[ScreenRant] is eluding to.
His time in all this conflict as Marc has developed a defense mechanism that is way too defensive it’s offensive and off the rails, so to counteract this he gave Steven the wheel. He is ill and hurt and needs help, Khonshu isn’t helping; Khonshu is only bringing out the worst in him. I’m sure some part of Marc prefers Steven because at least he fights Moonknight/Khonshu, but at the end of the day, Steven doesn’t grasp the weight of responsibility like he[Marc] does and so he has to do what is necessary for the world and, more personally, for Layla.
I think, if anything, having an extreme defense mechanism further deepens the well and complicates his position even more because, as you say, those that need help are afraid of hurting others- but sometimes people, anyone, but especially those who have their own issues, when they feel backed into corners people go feral and defensive- to avoid that we end up hurting ourselves to spare our loved ones pain, which can only hurt them more.

I definitely think it’s Jake and I agree that he’s probably the dark, violent type. I think the writers are hinting at this with all the symbolism of balanced scales and day vs night. Even the trailer used the song “Day and Night” which would be the perfect description of Marc if Jake were the darker identity. Marc himself would be the scale that has to balance Steven (light/day) and Jake (dark/night).

I really hope they don't go down this road of an evil alter. It's a trope that almost always happens whenever a character has DID. I would much prefer to have Jake be a protector at all costs alter, brutal yes, but not evil. He can be the one who sees Marc and Steven as his wards, he protects Marc from the "necessary" violence and protects Steven from knowing about his alters at all so he can have a "normal" life.
I also don't think that Jake has to have an issue with not being in control of the body. It could be like in Legion with Cary and Kerry. Kerry hated being out when all the fun stuff like fights were over, she didn't want to have to deal with eating, showering, going to the bathroom, all that mundane stuff so she would just hang out in Cary, let him take care of all that. Since they made Mr. Knight an extension of Steven and Moon Knight of Marc, i'd love it if they have Detective/Inspector Knight for Jake. Since Jake works by gathering intel in the streets, giving him the suit as a detective is perfect. It may have same character design like Noir Spider-man in the Spiderverse but white. Also, giving Steven the formal suit of Mr. Knight kinda make sense, setting him up as a billionaire businessman in the future. I hope each suit receives a different power-set from Khonshu as well.

I don't think they'd make his 3rd personality a villain, as Hollywood already faced backlash for creating a false perception that people with DID mostly have a violent psychopathic persona. Since the series has made efforts to study about mental health issues professionally, I don't think they'd follow this theme. Mark's other personalities might include his mother or father, as a parental archetype.

  • @TheDelinear
    @TheDelinear Před 2 lety +2

This is what I was thinking and it all makes so much sense. One more thing - in the comics the suited characters are different personalities, in the show they are just Marc and Steven with Konshu's suit. This leads me to believe the third personality will have his own version of the suit. What if that is the MCU's version of Midnight Man?
I don't think he'll be a straight up villain, but I can definitely see him being a dark anti-hero in the vein of Venom or Punisher. Midnight Man also worked for Bushman at some point in the comics, so if they're rolling Bushman's character into Jake, it would fit so well to have Midnight Man be his suited identity.
If they do go down this route, then I am definitely predicting at least one scene where the three identities battle each other mentally, so we get to see Moon Knight and Mr Knight pitted against Midnight Man. I can see how they may have to relinquish control of the body to Jake to rescue Konshu or prevent Ammut, and they have set up that the one who controls the body has a lot of power now, meaning Steven and Marc will have to team up to take the body back.

If we're going on the idea that each alter represents core aspects of Marc's personality (Steven being the intellectual side), Jake could represent Marc's thrill at killing an enemy in combat. Marc's psychosis may be the result of having killed innocent people rather than enemy combatants. Khonshu refers to Steven as 'the idiot', so he's aware of Marc's mental illness. That means Khonsu's aware of everything else going on in Marc's mind. IF I'm right, Khonshu's got some explaining to do regarding keeping that information from Marc. Not evil, a trauma response. The brain tries to shut down the memories of the traumatic event(s) to protect itself. It cannot handle the thought of, let's say, offing all those people so brutally. So, Jake essentially is the protector of the brain. The body keeps the score of the trauma, so it never really goes away. The brain tries to hide it. Marc has a code. Steven has a heart. Jake comes out when Marc can't quite do whatever needs doing. Then he dips because the brain moves him to where Marc or Steven can't/won't access who he is. Once the primary two personalities realize this, he's going to spiral. Maybe that's what sends him to the psych ward (if it's not Harrow's doing alone).

Jakes suit is shown in the moonknight episode outro. That outro contains various key elements and plot points of the show like three personality of marc, the eniad, jake, mark and stevens suit and also some unexplored Back story of marc

I must admit, the 3rd being Jake was something I'd considered. But Jake being connected to the Bushman character was something I'd never considered, and it wouldn't be a stretch for Marvel to go that route. I dig this theory!!

I think having a dark killer 3rd personality is also going to play well into the question that Steve has been asking, If an innocent person has an evil thought, does it make them evil? If an innocent personality has an evil personality, is that innocent personality doomed as well in Ammit eyes?

Wow such a awesome turn on Moon Knight. Now it’s like a karma system where Steven is nice and non threatening, Mark is a killer but is still somewhat nice, and Jake is a ruthless killer. He is truly a balancing of the scales

Odd how Layla keeps running into Marc very conveniently both in London and Egypt. Layla and Harrow are working together. Harrow probably is getting Layla to play along by saying he's "treating" Marc's DID, Shutter Island style.

    • @TheDelinear
      @TheDelinear Před 2 lety

She didn't "conveniently" run into him in London. She said, when he turned Marc's phone on, she was able to track its location and assumed that meant he wanted to be found. Of course that doesn't mean your theory is wrong - after all, Konshu is definitely interested in Layla as a potential new avatar, so maybe Ammut is interested in her too.

At almost the end of the credits, you can see another suit. If you pay attention its like a Mummy without the cape. Like imaging it's this Jake suit. That could be interesting...

Alice Eve played a character with DID on Iron Fist. Her story arc was similar. In the finale she discovers she might have a third altar responsible for the brutal murder of her captors. Of course the show was canceled, so they didn't get to pull that thread. Fortunately enough, it seems they're doing it here.

There was a moment where mark says to steven tha he guesses steven wants a bloodbath then to wich steven startled replied no. I understood this scene to mean they both still believe the other killed the men earlier and are a bit nervous of each other being in charge

This theory of "Jake" Being bushmans alt makes sense, even with the scene with the two fake detectives talking about all the bad he has done in the past. We are lead to think that was Mark, but I bet they where actually things "Jake" or Bushman Jake as I will call him has done
