To get an idea of wind direction and speed, you can throw some of your pocket sand. But not all of it, you never know when you will need it!
Everyone needs to keep pocket sand!
Creed more heck works in 308 175s at about 2700-2900 fps
Great video. I always like to see the low-tech alternatives. I only wish you would have walked us one step further and converted your 5 moa solution to mils since we were in mils earlier in the video. Thanks for putting out quality info.

I have a piece of mason line tied to the front of the stock of my rifle. Otherwise I use feel to guess speed based on previous wind readings and direction. Mirage and vegetation too

This is great, any chance this can be done with 22LR? I shoot only 22LR now as it's more enjoyable for me. Suggestions anyone?
What grain weight are the bullets you're using for the Creedmoor hack? Looks like it only works until about 500 m for 129 gr. hornadys

That was what I was taught. But I’m not sure if they’ve updated it. For MOA:
(Height in Inches x 95.5)/height in mils = distance in yards
The best kestrel out there by far is notebook and pencil!

As a first purchase, Kestrel 3500 or laser range finder? Hoping to range steel to 1 mile
Range finder is much more important than a kestrel in my opinion.
@@plzdontshootmydog6256 I would think so too. I measure out and set up my own range so I know the distances there, but hunting or other impromptu plinking it would be super nice to laz a target instead of range estimation with my reticle.
dont think the 3500 goes out that far. Fairly positive it caps at an 800 yard firing solution
@@GreatValueVarget I don't need the kestrel to do my firing solution, just weather and atmospheric data. Temp, humidity and pressure is all I need. I use Strelok on my phone
If you are shooting steel you probably don't need a rangefinder period...just use your reticle to range your target since you should know the size of the steel plate. I'll often times put GPS waypoints on my targets and can estimate them using the reticle then see how close I am to the waypoint on the GPS. I don't bother with a Kestrel since over a mile the wind will be different downrange and you should learn to read mirage, grass, dust, tree branches, leaves, etc.
