  • We've talked quite a bit about Andrew's Raiders on this channel, but they were the only raiders of the Civil War. In this episode, we're at Fort Preble in Portland, Maine which was built in 1808 and witnessed an attempted raid by Confederates in 1863. Very interesting place!!!

Growing up wasn't much on history but now I love it. History is about where we started how we got where we are at and to not make the same mistakes we did in the past but to be better.

I love both sides of Civil War History,
A friend of my family told the story of his mother. She was a little girl living on a farm in Florida just her mom and siblings. She said the Union Army came through, stole all of their food supplies, live stock and dumped the flour on the ground. This happened to many homes of the elderly, and the mothers and her children in the South. I'm sure this also happened in the North as well.
We hear a lot about Andersonville, check out the Union POW Camps in Rock Island, Illinois and one near Chicago. Both were just as notorious as Andersonville. My 2 times greatu uncle was a POW at the Rock Island Camp.
On my Grandmother's side of the family, my 2 times Great Grandfathers, both from Tennessee, One fought for the Union Army and the other one, the Confederate Army. I'm proud of both of them, they fought for what they believed. I'm thankful we are one nation. I respect both Flags. I would never fly the Confederate Flag above the American Flag. I despise these hate groups using the Confederate Flag to represent them.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
Have a blessed day, stay safe and healthy. 🥰👍👌🙏🦅🔔🗽🇺🇸

Another good video. I was definitely not aware of the Confederate raid, and it reminded me of the Great Locomotive Chase when you described it. Naval history in the Civil War is so understudied compared to the land war. I am guilty of that as well, although I have been to a few naval-focused museums. If you are ever around Newport News, VA, I highly recommend that museum.

I grew up in casco bay and I'm a sucker for exploring these forts, been to almost everyone on most of the islands back in 70's and 80's. Some know been buried or torn down but there are still some amazing granite forts still in excellent condition, the best fort is fort gorgeous which is a Pentagon shape with 2 hugh cannons laying on the ground. Maybe one day you'll come back and go to it there's a landing still. Great vid enjoyed the history, some I've never heard before. Thx.. cA

I never knew the confederates made it that far north by sea! Again I learned something. I want to say thank you for making these videos. Not only because you share a love of history like so many of us. But speaking for myself I want to add how much I look forward to these little mini vacations. Places I may never get to visit. And during this pandemic and working in health care this gives me a reason to sit with a cup of tea, and take a moment to bypass all the worries and stress of these times. You are not only sharing history young man, but you are offering a great service to your fellow man at this time. At least that is how I feel. Thank you. Continue on. Be safe. And blessings to you and your family.

If you ever get to Washington State, check out Fort Casey State Park - about 45 minutes N of Seattle on Whidby Island.
Also, Fort Warden State Park in Port Townsend, WA. Before C19, we'd sail on my friend's Yacht for the Port Townsend Jazz Festival.
It's a very long (3 hours?) to drive, or you can hop on a WSDOT Ferry, but must check out the Ferry schedules AND MAKE RESERVATIONS, preferably a few months out.
I'm over 60, and have lived here since I was 6 weeks old.
Best weather in Seattle? The last week of July - end of August.
If you're ever in town, look me up. I will give you a personally guided tour of the so many amazing things.

Some great history, and they have kept such good care of the Fort, and it's grounds. Have a Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year.

JD, if you haven't already covered Morgan's Raiders from the Civil War, their story might be of interest to you.
John Hunt Morgan led a 3,000 man cavalry raid out of Kentucky into Indiana, then Ohio. The goal was to cause some distractions to relieve pressure on Confederate armies in Tennessee. Well, it worked, but in a suicidal sort of way. Several thousand Union pursuers conducted a running battle with Morgan's men that went for several hundred miles. Morgan kept looking for escape routes across the Ohio River but all were blocked. He ended up in northeastern Ohio where he and the remnant of his forces were conclusively defeated in the Battle of Salineville. It was the northernmost land battle of the war. Salineville is pretty close to where I live, and went to college.

Your history lesson is making me remember history I learned while traveling as well now lol. I had to go back to catch the name of the other fort you mentioned in your video, Fort Scammel. At first I thought you said Fort Scammon. That is the name of an old earthworks fort that overlooked the city of Charleston, VA (now WV). Not too much left to it now, just earthworks in the middle of a bunch of houses, but still a strategic site during the Civil War in that area. Thought it was kind of humorous so thought I would share.

Were Union prisoner of war camps worse or were Confederate camps worse?

    • @TheHistoryUnderground
      @TheHistoryUnderground  Před 3 lety

They were both pretty bad. A similar number and percentage died in each, but there were slightly more Union POWs who died in the camps than Confederates.
