Now i was expecting Nostalgia Critic to rip on this movie
Didn't expect Doug to say that this flick was good lols
Tici Toty Tony This movie gets a pass and yet Interstellar is a complete waste of time. Hmmm...
Midnight Movie Madness the whole world is coming to a end
Midnight Movie Madness The next thing you know Furious 7 wins an Oscar for the best movie...
Igor Arutiunian Better that film than this.
Tici Toty Tony well Phelous and Brad Jones, Cinema Snob, hated it
"The best actor in this whole movie is the Arrow." *Green Arrow flies by*
+PrehistoricPKMN I thought I was the only one who thought that.
+ZarPof
lol same XD
+PrehistoricPKMN Laura Burns! You have failed this Skype-chat!
I can understand a LOT of criticisms on this movie...I CANNOT understand how people could think the acting was bad. Then again, YMS is a lame hipster who thinks the acting in every single movie ever made is bad, so not surprising in the least.
TheMovieDoctorful he never said their acting was bad
I am confused. All I hear about this movie is that it is either surprisingly good or really awful. Guess I will have to wait till it comes to my theater to find out.
KillerZeli The people who say it's awful are the very people the movie's targeting the anti-cyber bullying message towards.
psychokinrazalon So you're Implying that because I did not like the movie I'm a cyber bully?
It was neither really good nor really bad. It was incredibly...meh. The gimmick was good, and unique. But the story was really basic and towards the end I was hoping for some of these characters to die. I'd recommend Redbox.
jeff emerson I don't know. Are you?
psychokinrazalon Well if like's are anything to go by, Everyone is saying yes.
1:00 this is the first I've heard of Doug being married! :O
…You never watched the Fresh Prince Nostalgia Chick review? Or the A Simple Wish review commentary? Or the Scooby Doo review credits?
O.o I feel unworthy to call myself a Nostalgia Critic fan now
Well in that Fresh Prince review it was in the credits, and in the Scooby Doo review his ring showed up several times so he apologized in the credits. Check out this Twitter search twitter.com/search?f=realtime&q=%23ThatGuyWiththeRing&src=typd
this is a thing? this is a thing!

*SPOILERS* I think my favorite part about the movie was that at the beginning, the main character sees a page where it explains how to get rid of the ghost. You had to be completely honest with it, rid yourself of sins so that it would fulfill its vengeance. The main character found it easy to tell others to be honest about the shit they've done and she was willing to be painfully blunt about other's faults, yet at the end of the film, when it was her turn to be honest, she refused. Like she couldn't come to terms with what happened. Throughout the entire film she kept saying "it wasn't us, that's not us I swear, we didn't mean to" but then at the end when you see that SHE was the one who filmed the video in the first place, it's like wow. That's some pretty strong denial there. Honestly when I think of this scene, the first thing that comes to my mind is serial killers. They will usually deny that they killed people, instead wording it as "released them" "did them a favor" etc etc. It's bizarre but I can believe it.
“What is a troll?!”
An actual quote from the movie.
For me it's one of those things I know but can't describe because I just can't find the words I need
I thought because it was only on the one computer it was going to be dumb and boring and they like never leave the room
Doug Walker: This movie is really clever and good.
Team Snob: This movie is fucking stupid garbage.
Well shit.
randomjunkohyeah1 Watch Phelous's review. It's so negative that he plans to review it.
PersonaX
Yeah, well, you know, that's just, like, uh, your opinion, man.
randomjunkohyeah1 Ghost memes. Plot holes, or at least plot points that don't even make sense in the context of the movie. It was pretty bad, but had some good moments. I'd say it was terrible but had good ideas.
Which video did snob say that?

Midnight Screenings of the film.

Would you call this Anti-cyberbully message subtle?
Took the words right outta me.
TheSuperGamefreak It is subtle, but some people nowadays are better at discovering hidden meanings and the like, so it comes off as less subtle than it really is to the average moviegoer.
psychokinrazalon Your version of subtle must come from a different dictionary, because the entire movie was hung on this thing.
Malcom Stringer People have different definitions of what subtle entails. For me, this movie wouldn't be subtle, but it would to an average moviegoer. At any rate, a movie doesn't need to be subtle to get its message across in a way that's efficient while still being fun to watch. This movie does that beautifully.
Yes
After hearing this, all I can imagine is the actual cursor being an actor
"Gentlemen, it says in my script I have to "click on a justin bieber album and login to tumblr"...I refuse to do that, so either I go or that scene goes. I'll be in my trailer."
Watching this makes me happy that I was a very untraditional teen and never did those stupid things most do. It has cost me some experiences but most of the time I'm pretty proud of it.
I'm like the 1% at my high school who's NOT a complete idiot! NERDS FOR LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!
Do you happen to have Asperger's (I mean no offense, I have it myself, actually)? One of the 'symptoms' is being more resistant to trends, fads, and pop culture. Some people might think of that as bad, but I consider it a sort of blessing.
Yes, yes I do actually!
***** I happen to be in the same boat, and I'm glad I wasn't like the other people at my school.
ExExister I hate hipsters.
Just watched "Unfriended" on my laptop.
It is so much better on your own computer. I can't imagine this being as good in a theater.
+HwoarangtheBoomerang
I kept thinking I was getting messages and skype calls.
Then I remembered I had no friends ):
I know what a troll is... but I've NEVER heard of "I Never"...
cesarjimenezanimator you say I never never (something you've never done) and anyone in the game who has done it takes a shot or other dare if you cant drink
avi saks It's more fun as a drinking game haha
Better known as "Never Have I Ever..."
cesarjimenezanimator Me either! Good to know I'm not alone.
cesarjimenezanimator It's the game that I always win
ONE THING that really got on my nerves throughout the movie was WHERE WERE ALL THE FUCKING PARENTS during all that screaming and the lights going out and all that damn noise like WTF?!!!
it only explained that about two teens- the main girl and her boyfriends dad went out for drinks. Nothing was said about the other teens parents and even if all the parents were gone and had an excuse for not being at the house that's a bit unrealistic for 6 teenagers to be on skype at home all alone with not one parent in at least one of the households- so stupid to me but that's tv -
this wasnt in the finished movie
but in a trailer posted to the Facebook page and mitch jumps off the roof of his apartment. most of these teen love alone it only sounded like jess lived with her parents
*Spoiler*
I honestly think the ending would have been more effective if they left the girl alive instead of doing the paranormal activity of she's behind you and roar at the camera thing. Having the video up and everyone now saying bad things about her and having to live with it would have been more fitting and if you really want the poetic justice have the last scene of her now killing herself after seeing what people posted about her.
It wouldn't have made up for the movie being so boring and annoying but hey, at least it would've been interesting.
Sadly, the people who wrote and directed this movie are nothing but hacks with no understanding of true horror.
God, I fucking those last ten seconds.
It was seriously the final nail in the coffin.
Sit around with a group of friends on Skype and talk about god knows what?? Sounds like a normal night to me! XD
Same
Yeah
Emily Domanick cant they just get up and leave lol what if their parents come into the room is that addressed how can the internet kill you is it like the happening lol
I don't want to give away too much, but the ghost basically used torture methods and blackmail to keep them logged on.
Kawaii Thulhu sacrifice my friends over Skype that’s normal too for me

ARRGAAHHHH!!! THAT STORY ABOUT IT FOLLOWS!!!
therealmanos Seriously! Who does that shit?!!
Midnight Movie Madness me
Lithium Flower Goddamn it.
therealmanos That guy was a dick.
therealmanos It really upsets me that we could be watching an It Follows review instead of this crappy movie's review.
I liked the movie, it delivered on it's promise built up a good amount of suspense and was very clever with the use of technology when it came to the glitches/ghost trolling.
What I especially liked was the little details revealed in the main character Blaire, when she would write something and then delete it and then write something else instead. I think the main reason the movie built up a lot of tension and suspense was because of how realistic it felt, like Doug said in the beginning they interact very naturally (with a few minor exceptions of course... who doesn't know what a troll is seriously?) and it's because of the realism that there's a growing sense of danger and I was never bored watching it. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to see a very simplistic horror movie that really nails the "found footage genre" in a clever and intriguing way.
i loved that accent sounds like tommy
Doug is married?
Shock
same exact reaction (waaaaaattt)
I wonder if she will get involved in one of the nostalgia critics episodes
He's mentioned his wife many times. I'm assuming you're new
Max Glaysher She was the voice of the gps in a couple ask that guy videos, other than that she doesn't want to be in videos. For more in depth explanations watch a bunch of convention videos of Doug.
While watching the movie, I seriously couldn't shake the image of this "Entity" or "Spirit" sitting in purgatory or wherever the heck it is, with a Macbook, giggling while surrounded by other ghosts helping them violently troll their friends.
Does Hell have a starbucks?? Do they have an apple store? Think of these while watching the movie, and it makes it 10x funnier.
Me and my friend laughed for about an hour after the movie, making up the craziest scenarios about Hell having the internet.
... I think Doug and Rob are REALLY hard to scare!
Doug was scared by a character in a Care Bears movie.
You Tube No, no, that was Nostalgia Critic. Doug is a completely different person.
Ohh Ok
andrewkful Unless it is a cartoon, in which case Fivel Goes West causes them to leave skid marks.
***** Fivel Goes West isn't that bad is it? I mean Tanya's pretty annoying but the rest is tolerable. And it's more lighthearted than An American Tail but not on an insulting level like Secret of NIMH 2.
ROTTEN TOMATOES
Critics rating: 61%
Audiences rating: 37%
It really annoys me when people treat trolls and cyber bullies as the same thing.
Doug, if you had seen It Follows, you would have had alot more to talk about, because Unfriended looks like your average found footage film, and sure it might have some entertaining moments, but It Follows is literally an original film with a 70's tone to it and really good material. You should really check it out. And if I'm wrong then just let us know what your opinion was about it.
SPOILERS
I liked this movie. It unnerved me. But my major problem with it would have to be the ending. They'd could've gone with something a lot better but instead they decided to take the cheesy route and end off with a jumpscare death. Personally, if I were the ghost (and pardon me for sounding terrible), I wouldn't kill the person who ruined my life, I'd leave them to live with the pain after I ruined theirs. They could've done that and and ended off with a much more phycological and sinister ending rather than just her dying with a jumpscare. Maybe they could've showed the aftermath and quickly shown the toll that would've took on our main character, and I dunno (pardon for me sounding terrible again), she could've committed suicide and become the next Laura. Just my thoughts.
my thoughts exactly!
-------SPOILER------
Huh... I feel like the way the movie ended kinda already does that. I personally think the movie had quite an open ending.
Near the end (right before Blaire dies), Laura's ghost says: "what u've done will live here forever" after Laura posts the video exposing Blaire as the person who filmed the video of Laura.
Blaire gets a lot of hate comments for that and people tell her to kill herself and such, which is pretty much exactly what happened to Laura when the video of her peeing herself was posted...
That kinda makes me think that Blaire actually became the next Laura, since the entire situation is so similar.
But I dunno, it's probably just me overthinking this entire movie :D
pretty much
+PhantomNews01
Yeah. Suicide or a death without seeing Laura. Something like Adam or Mitch's death.
How do you know Blaire died? you dont know for sure
It's been a good 3-4 years since I've seen any of Doug's work. Nice to take a moment and watch a recent review, glad he is still doing it and it is easily accessible here on youtube.
I think this movie was decent. But I think the girls in the movie are pretty cute!
and yet dont know simple games like never have i ever?
I had never heard of Never Have I Ever until I went to a party after my senior prom. It can happen.
+Mar Mar Fgp ur profile pic XD
It Follows was like horror's Eyes Wide Shut. Most audiences are going to hate it, but people who like art films that have interesting metaphors without jump-scares will love it.
What a shitty picture
I thought a bit that way about the Babadook, but I don't think the mainstream is QUITE that stubborn. There are some people like that, but I'd say it's less than half. I have a friend who I reccomended the Babadook to that I KNEW he was going to watch it directly before or after Unfriended (a more mainstream movie for sure) but he surprised me and said he thought it slow and a little boring but good.
Gravitynaut You're right about that. They both relied on psychological tension instead of jumpscares, they both had great atmosphere and camerawork, and they both had monsters that were allegories or manifestations of a feeling. Like how Mr. Babadook was grief, and the creature from It Follows was sexual angst and fear for teenagers. I think that is actually a much better comparison.
joey sands Is your picture, seriously, just a piece of doo-doo?
@joey sands If nobody liked It Follows, it would NEVER have above an 80% on rotten tomatoes
How to deal with Cyberbullying.
Step 1: Block person.
Step 2 (Optional): Leave computer.
I didn't know Doug reviewed this movie. I was glad to have found this in my recommendation. And even though he thought it was unrealistic for Blair to not know what a internet troll or "Never Have I Ever" was, I actually never heard of those until I saw this film and I was close to these characters ages when this came out.
I hope Doug reviews the sequel "Dark Web"
He... He's married...?Well, then. So, my search continues.
Or you could just do what Roman emporers would do
What's that?
yeah! okay! I'm gonna kill a woman and impersonate her because someone in a youtube comment told me to! That'll be fun!
+Elizabeth Lingurar dude he's joking
As was I.
This movie did something that many few horror movies I've seen were able to do; it unnerved me. Many think in order for a movie to be scary, it has to have you screaming or cowering or whatever, but that's not always the case. I rarely ever jumped and I never looked away from the screen when watching this, but I still found this film to be fairly disturbing. It's not like the ghost was satisfied with picking them off one by one, but rather fucking with them first in the form of cute texts with emotes and whatnot. It was adorable, amusing, and yet, highly disturbing. There were also small references to real-life teen suicides, like Amanda Todd.
I don't understand why so many people in my generation are so hateful towards anything that even remotely references current pop culture. They pine after the 90's or the 00's, but they can't see the good things that are right in front of them. The name "Unfriended" is great because it's something that people can instantly recognize and relate to. Those calling people "dumb" for liking this movie are the ignorant ones imo. Most of the arguments in the comments I see is that it's cliche (I've seen my fair share of cyberhorrors and this one was pretty original in its own right), or that it's instantly dumb because internet saavy teens are in it. I don't mind dissenting opions, but at least give a decent argument. The acting was great as well. It felt like these were actual shitty kids getting their just desserts in a way relevant to today's culture and not actors in a studio, unlike the usual unrealistic portrayal of asshole teens in horror movies. Aside from some pacing issues at times and the deaths being over a bit too quickly for my liking, this movie is definitely one that you cannot judge from the trailer alone. Go see it, people; it's definitely worth at least a watch on Netflix.
butterstix24 The idea is one of the worst idea's for a horror movie ever. Right along with that stupid 'Devil' movie.
Inexplicable Enigmas First of all, this idea is not that bad, since it is relevant to today's society, and offers a good chance and analyze the mentality of present day people. And secondly, even if it is understandably ridiculous to some people, it's the execution that matters, the same way how eating a burger or a potato chip can feel intense and dramatic when presented right. And this movie is pretty darn good in its execution, considering how they made a ridiculous idea so unnerving.
If you've never seen a horror movie ever or only watched shitty horror movies then sure this movie can be unnerving for some. But to others who bask in horror movies every editing trick, dialogue, and jumpscare was predictable and boring.
The editing was atrocious as things like a printer is clearly audible even though the video call is glitching out, or how the videos clearly show the characters teleporting. The acting was not in any way great. Though I put blame on the boring dialogue that didn't give them much of anything to work with. The main character was the furthest from an internet savvy teen as she made horrendous mistakes that no "internet savvy teen" would do. I mean she goes to chatroulette for help The characters weren't just assholes they were straight up monsters that by the end I couldn't care two shits about. Speaking of the ending they couldn't have picked the most pussy way out of it. The most cliched horror movie trope of all time and they go with it.
Lauren M I absolute love your deconstruction of this movie and why it's good. I personally love the film, especially since it's one of the few movies to actually scare me.
Preview Review
Their deconstruction is mostly them praising the movie for being "different" even though it followed every horror trope imaginable. Not to mention completely dismissing any actual arguments.
I'd classify it more as a slasher.
Horror movies kinda depend on you caring for the character, or putting yourself in their shoes.
Here you just kinda see some complete shitbags die.
11:00, "who doesn't know how to play 'I Never'?" *raises hand*
Thumbs up from me for the Aninite 2010 T-Shirt he is wearing. The only time an Austrian like me could actually see him on a convention (awesome memories) lol.
Maisie Williams made a movie earlier this year Called Cyberbully.
They even made a movie with this name in 2011 for ABC TV, so this movie
would be the one jumping on the band wagon.
That movie was good
Theresa Cherco no it was not
The 2011 movie Cyberbully legit makes me want to hurt the writers of the movie because you can put turns off the computer in every scene and things would be better
A.J Gustave i know i not i'm going to see it
I'll never forget the "I can't get the cap off," scene. Probably the best thing about it. The rest of the movie was too melodramatic and hipster...-ish for me.
Am I the only one who felt bad for Mitch the whole movie? I felt more bad for him than I did for Laura & she's the one who the movies about. The fact that Blaire cheated on Mitch not once , but TWICE with one of their friends (Adam) to see if what she did was meant to be or if it would lead to something "more". It's fucked up. Especially the part where Mitch watches the whole entire video of Blaire & Adam having sex is super fucked up. I know I wouldn't ever wanna experience that type of shit in my life.
+Clark Kent best part is that she kills the guy she cheated on him with to save him and then kills him herself at the end. lool
+Frenetic Gamer loool yeah and she did it so calm too
Yeah... And Mitch was the only character who wasn't completely awful! He could be nice! So it's kind of awful. I really liked this movie though, don't know about you guys, but I thought it was really good.
sierra garabed I enjoyed it. Definitely more immersive and fun when its watched on a computer. I didn't find it too scary though and hated Blaire.
Cheating is such a trivial thing to be upset over, let alone the reaction Mitch gave. Like, oh shit! Everyone's dying, but I'd rather be mad about being cheated on. Teenagers are so trivial, turn little things into crisis.
When Doug said this movie can teach a lot to a certain age group, yet he's not part of that age range, I have something of my own to add:
I'm just a few years younger than Doug, and this movie spoke a lot to me, but in a different way than it probably would to teens. This'll probably sound sappy, but just bear with me.
See, I work both in youth ministry and in substitute teaching, and hope to become a fully certified teacher, and this movie helped me to see that in those positions, directly working with teens, I have something of a responsibility to teach the kids entrusted to me the importance of treating others with kindness and respect, as a way of kind of doing my own part to help keep things like what happened to Laura in the film from happening in real life as much as possible.
Unfriended: the world's biggest advertisement for Skype.
How to prevent 'cyber-bullying'
Step one. Get bullied.
Step two. Turn off the computer.
Step three. Realize how stupid all these 'anti-cyber-bullying' things are.
RaksadaRX unfortunately it's not always that easy for everyone.
I would agree if I could actually find a cyber bully (sure, there are mindless trolls and just plain dicks, but that is still different) anywhere. Never did any texting, I hate texting, so maybe it's all there or something.
How original!
Berry Box Mostly because said person is too addicted to the internet.
***** or shelters themselves in it and is their only reality.
You should have seen "It Follows," it is so much better!
Definitely.
Christian Neihart It was better, but that doesn't mean this was horrible. I thought It Follows was a masterpiece of modern horror, but Unfriended was a well above-average horror movie. Tons better than most horror movies. Plus, could you imagine him and his wife seeing it? At least with this movie, you can go home and have sex or whatever. After It Follows, it would make anybody want to become a nun or some such shit.
Jim Halpert Meh, I honestly thought that The Babadook was much better than It Follows. But that's just me.
LordMalice6d9 I have yet to see the Babadook...
Christian Neihart It follows was a good concept, but I hated the fucking characters IMO.
I still need to see this!!!
A better way to introduce the term "troll" to old audience members:
Have a character patronizingly start to explain one to her, and she can stop him/her after the jist of it to say she knows what one is.
Damn it, I Think I need to see the movie before I see the review... brb!
Leilson José pointless comment is pointless
MegaKrage huehuehuehue
Ever seen the anime Durarara? They had the same theme with the story told by internet chat room.
True
yszman AH yeah, I love Durarara.....but sometimes it's tough to follow. XD
Chiibi Tsukino i love Durarara to its so good
Yeah, but with DRRR it's more suicide than a bloody murder when involving chat rooms. And nothing happens to the people using the main chatrooms.
I love this channel, it gives a more personal view of Doug, his actual personality
I love this movie ... first watched it in the dark on my laptop. Since rewatching it, it's how I recommend others view it for the first time. Gets uncannily realistic at parts.
Regarding Ken -- he drops a couple lines of dialogue indicating that he buys their drugs and has a car, so it's easier to believe that he's in their friend group.
I bet watching the movie on a MacBook would be wild lol
This was a very funny and entertaining movie. Really enjoyed it.
When i first saw thumbnails of reviews for this movie, i thought it was some controversial video about a girl getting wayyy too upset over someone unfriending her on social media. Guess i was wrong.
The arrow deserves an Oscar nod for next year.
i was trying to get a screenshot of you smiling and everytime you did i just smiled back ily
I do have to say me and my friends, as people the same age as these kids, just talk on skype for no reason.
I'm prepared to hate this movie just from the awful ads. That obnoxious chick in flannel screaming in my ear every time I try to watch a video without adblock really bugs me.
Evan Chase heard that the ads were really bad in comparison to the movie itself. Kind of like HTTYD2, which had an awful trailer and the movie was good.
Evan Chase Don't judge a movie by it's trailer. "Inside Out" had some pretty shitty marketing, but look at how awesome it turned out. While I am not comparing this movie to Inside out, it is still worth a watch.
Pat Adams Of course Inside Out would be awesome, it's Pixar.
***** Yes, but the advertizing was awful. And Pixar has produced some movies that were less-than-stellar.
+cesarmanuel51 +Pat Adams i just watched inside out today.
it was pretty cool CX
i saw this movie a few months ago and i liked it. i thought it was a intersting concept
I recommend watching this movie on a laptop! The computer interface looks very realistic, and it adds to the creep factor. It legitimately adds a star!
has anyone realized in these cyber bully movies its always a girl and never a guy that got bullied. i think that's not right
Is "I Never" the same as "Never Have I Ever"?
Never will I ever play Never have I ever
Yep sir
My brother and I really wanted to see "It Follows" because of the rave reviews but the only theater that was showing it in good old Annapolis, MD was and hour away :(. So we'll just have to wait for the dvd. We both really enjoyed "Unfriended." Like you said, it was creatively done and very unique and very enjoyable. I am definitely going to buy this too when it comes out :)
I love the total lack of music 🎶 but THEN have music come in ONLY FOR the final minute of the film to highlight that this is the end. Works perfectly.
I still havent seen the movie, and I still dont really want to. My opinion is probably outdated but the one thing that draws me away how the fact the the ghost wants to know who put up the video of her drunk...and no one wants to say anything. I would have been perfectly fine if 1 or 2 people died, that sets the message of "Give me what I want or I'll kill you all", but from the trailers I keep seeing everyone dies.....For god sakes fess up to the fucking crime...why are you so goddam selfish that you would let your friends die because you didnt just fucking fess up? I dont want to see it because that form of stupidity frustrates the shit out of me. I think the concept if fucking horrifying. Ghosts scare the piss out of me more than anything on this earth. And from what I've heard the detail is phenomenal with what a teens computer would be like....but I just dont think I will enjoy it
+ThatGiambalvoGuy But the whole twist of the movie wasn't that she was stupid, it's the fact that she's a manipulative bitch who traded away her friend's lives for her own.
And you know what's worse? Blaire found a forum that said (she even FREAKING highlighted it with the damn mouse) that if Blaire confessed she would've been freed and none of the deaths would've happened. Goodness, I know you're supposed to hate the characters but what's the point? Laura wasn't an angel either so what the hell?
I've never played "I've Never"
I'm going to see this tomorrow (April 30 in australia when it comes out) So Excited!!!!
Your discussion on the different uses of scary devices reminds me of an essay that Ann Radcliffe wrote where she contrasted "terror" vs "horror". In her essay, she described terror as the mind jumping to conclusions and scaring itself, while not showing much in the way of scary imagery. It's a good read if you ever have the time, and very interesting when considering the genre.
She considered terror (it was her own style) to be superior to showing just plain blood and gore and violent imagery, which she termed horror. Her argument was that showing too much shut off the mind and undid any and all of the buildup the terror provided before hand, and sometimes could be too over the top. But then the types of scary stories she was complaining about that went too over the top involved monks using magic talismans to spy on naked women they desired, detailed description of bloody murders, mobile skeletons, people stepping out of portraits, ghosts that pop up and give away the plot twist in their conversation quite blatantly, and gigantic helmets falling out of the sky like an Acme anvil. That's what her competition was writing at the time, and what her essay was complaining about and trying to set herself apart from.
Radcliffe argued that the supernatural didn't exist, but it didn't stop her characters from thinking that it existed. True, like Scooby Doo she went out of her way in the end to explain EVERYTHING supernatural as having a perfectly logical and rational explanation, but where she was a better author was when her characters were still undecided on whether or not what they were facing was truly supernatural or not.
Interestingly enough that divide between "terror" versus "horror" that was written about the turn of the Nineteenth Century is still applicable as an argument of discourse two hundred years later, and that really goes to show how influential the two strains of thought have been on the genre. :)
Though as a side note I should warn you, if you do seek out her works, in her non-scary moments Ann Radcliffe essentially wrote Twilight before Twilight existed. Her style of scary story telling, when she finally gets around to all the scary stuff, is actually quite good because it often toys with characters' senses of what was real and what was illusion. It's usually worth it getting through all that proto-Twilight stuff to get to the genuinely scary parts of her stories and novels. And if you need a recommendation on just how good a scary story teller she is, I'll just say this: she arguably had the strongest influence on Edgar Allen Poe. Poe even admits that IIRC and praised her writing. Poe in his own work simply took the best part of Radcliffe's scary story telling and extended it to the entire length of his scary stories.
Better than it follows. Better idea too.
Liam Lenz Thats your opinion. This is mine.
Wow. There are a ton of people shitting on this movie in the comments. I don't get it. This movie was great. The acting was believable, the message was perfectly delivered, and most of all it was scary. Sure other horror movies are scarier, but computer glitches will never be the same for me. I seriously don't understand why so many hate this film.
YourMovieSucksDOTorg did a 3 part review on it. Probably most people are agreeing with that.
I watched it and it was a really great comedy. Good horror movie? No freaking way.
This movie is FUCKING AWFUL, unless you watch it as a comedy. Then you will enjoy it!
To each their own situation I think. I find certain things scary or incredibly uncomfortable that others wouldn't bat an eye at. For you it seems this situation would scare you and for others, they just found it funny.
I agree. One of the scary moments was when Ken looks in his room for the video feed. When he finds it, he stops and stares wide-eyed. What was he looking at? We don't see it...
And I'm going to be honest, jumpscares are being abused so much in Hollywood. That ending jumpscare? Got me.
This movie was utterly hilarious. This should've been pegged as a comedy.
This was the first scary movie I watched with my friend. The sound scared me more than the movie lol We both covered our ears.
I found the movie really clever and enjoyable. It's a great message for a growing problem. If I had to pick something to nit pick from the movie is the glitching on the main girl's screen, if the perspective is from her computer there would be no glitching or poor connection.
he likes this, but hates interstellar.. i dont get that
filmneek Interstellar had its head up its own anus. The scientific conversation in it was great, the planets were cool, the space station was cool, the cinematography was fantastic.
But the whole, "Oooh, he went into an alternate dimension made by us to communicate with his daughter in the paaasssst, whoooa" and the loaded acting were a real turn off.
well many MANY people disagree, as in most argue that the third act was in fact the best because it contained the most emotion and catharsis. it was maily the critics who just shunned all the apparent 'illogic' of the film but then again, its a sci fi... anything can happen in it.
filmneek Makes no sense.
I loved the idea and the pacing of the movie as well - thought it was too convenient though that when Blair (I think that's her name if I remember correctly) was doing other things on the computer screen besides looking at Skype, all of the people in the call were silent xD
Thank you this helped me actually understand the whole movie.
I keep hearing the movie is bad, but after watching it, I don't see why. Do people just hate modern horror movies that much? I thought it was really good. Like, an 8 or 7 out of 10. The acting was PHENOMENAL, especially towards the end with all the emotions. The only thing that REEEALLY bothered me was that there was never an explanation, although I guess that'd be kinda hard to do with this movie. I find the format of a Skype chat really interesting, and the reactions were really believable. It was also believable that it was from an actual screen, not just a bunch of effects. I don't see why people hate this movie so much :/
I really don't like the ending. And how the main character is so stupid. That's basically it.
Yeah the ending's a bit "eeeeh..." But I didn't really see much wrong with the protagonist. She's kinda unlikeable, yeah, but in a realistic way
The protagonists went to fucking chat roulette to get help, has no idea what a troll is, couldn't figure out why the recycling bin couldn't be emptied even though it's telling her why, and can't follow simple instructions. She's the reason a girl committed suicide and she acts like a perfect little angel. She is far from being just unlikable she's a monster who I was rooting to die by the end of it.
WIFE!?!?! Doug Walker is MARRIED :D
He has been since 2011.
***** i never knew that
2012 actually.
Oh ok. I thought it was 2011 or 2012. Thanks!
Love your reviews! Wasnt so high hopes for this movie but I'll plan to see it sometime
The best example of this was a Modern Family episode from last season. Took place from the point of view of one characters computer the whole time. It was awesome!!!
I would've told the guy that he was being really rude. The guy who spoiled everything. I haaaatte people who spoil horror movies or any movie. Unless I specially chose to, such as watching doug. You should probably report that guy.
simple solution to the problem from the gate... how about close skype. or turn off your computer. interesting idea yes. but the characters are so so dumb.
Pretty sure one of the plot points is that, if they log off, they die. Then again, I haven't seen the movie, so I could be wrong.
Lol damn you really hate this movie
MegaKrage Considering the tag line i saw in an ad was: If you log off you die. Or something to that effect that leaves an issue.
there is really no explanation on why they die if they log off. which most horror movies don't explain main plot points anyway but still.
MegaKrage I haven't watched the movie, i plan to, but as i seen it. They're being haunted by a ghost most likely of the larua barnes character. There is also the trailer where the "killer" has said they want to play a game to find who posted the video.
"Glitch starts talking with them"
Wreck it Ralph looks amazing
I just love Doug. He gets so authentically carried away telling anechdotes and stories it's just impossible not to get carried away listening. A joy to watch, given it's a super rare treat in adults. Admirable, dude, you're the best :)
Am I the only one who's bored of cyber bullying assembly's? I'm not okay with it, but it's getting old, no one, literally nobody in my year has a been cyber bullied.
By the way, if you are getting bullied, that's horrible but my school doesn't have that problem.
Great mario impression...
+Film Central ?
+Jaria Sims literally nobody in my year has A been cyber bullied.
Trying to stop cyber bullying is like trying to stop porn
Both "It Follows" and "Unfriended" sucked.
I have my expectations set for horror movies now on a scale from Unfriended to The Babadook.
I am pretty sure that nothing will ever top The Babadook. It actually presented a real and tangible plot. It represents something that happens to every one of us. It was a far fetch from the standard fictional demon or possession story.
Jguy365 The Babadook has been topped unless your talking about this year than yes
Jguy365 The amount of depression and grief the main character in The Babadook goes through is definitely not something that happens to everyone, or many at all.
***** Yes, obviously, but what the main character in The Babadook faced was a very extreme degree of that, not just a normal amount that everyone else does. It's like saying Antichrist is a representation of what the majority of people go through when in grief.
Cabin in the Woods, my friend. Go see it
Jguy365 Even if you don't like "Unfriended", I can assure you that the bar is set much, much lower. If you haven't seen a worse horror film than "Unfriended", then consider yourself fortunate.
I actually agree with Doug so much on this film, because I really didn't want to see this, but I enjoyed it so much for all the reasons he mentioned!
I still remember this story I heard a while back about a kid on Xbox live being strangled by some guy he insulted who hacked his system, found his address and came to kick his ass. Yes he was fucking crazy but seriously, be careful what you say to people.
Best thing you can do is avoid this movie.
Please tell me this movie was bullshit
The B World Movie was entertaining. But it wasn't scary..like, at all.
The B World go see TheCinemasnob his friends did a video on it
The B World Nope.
Grump Taco you mean ...like chucky , i love chucky , but come on honesttly chucky 123 are scary? No ._. Even some disney movies are more scary
Vork77 Phelous did a video on it too
I'm gonna wait for the DVD. I wonna watch it on my laptop as I think that'd add to what they were trying to do.
First time I hear that Doug is married and I've been subscribed to him for two years
YMS ( your movie sucks ) called this movie Garbage
And he's right.
It's already been done more than once. There are a few short films which use exactly the same subject, and Maisie Williams appeared in 'Cyberbully' on Channel 4 the other month.
Doug you are so awesome. I love you here and I love you on James channel.
I've never heard of "I Never" till I saw this video.
i was so impressed with this movie that I bought the Blu-ray/DVD combo pack
About the group of friends thing, I played football and baseball and did track, but I was the only athlete in my group of friends who were in the band or theater
The characters argue so much about who posted what, it makes the Blair Witch kids arguing over the map sound like a pleasant conversation over a cup of tea
Seen yesterday loved it
there should be a nostalgia critic of this where they're all acting the movie out lol that'd be funny
Wow, didn't expect Doug to like it.
What's a troll? LOL
Spoony wants to know "What's a paladin?" :)
OH MY GOD Doug is wearing an Aninite´10 shirt? :O
I certainly do hope he sometime or another comes back to austria, I didn´t discover him until 2011 -.-
