Alright guys I finally have another dkoldies unboxing/review coming tomorrow (PS4). And let’s just put it this way… it’s worse than the desert PS3 😬
Oh boy. I'm really excited for the video!
I need to watch this!
Upload it now jacob!
@@iffy4509 it’s still being edited, won’t be ready until tomorrow
Has roaches?
honestly the random ebay listings with 100% feedback have never failed me when buying actually refurbished hardware. the small guys dont have the volume these bigger names have and put more love into what they sell
Agreed. eBay is always the first place I look when I’m buying used video games. Just have to spend a few minutes sifting through the listings to find what you’re looking for
Yup. I brought some old PS2 games for 10-20 bucks from little resellers and they could have charged much more as the disc quality was almost mint condition. Ebay never fails
That's the secret you want somebody with a 98.5% or higher rating and you'll be good to go
Exactly. I'm a full time ebay seller myself..... people think ebay is just full of scammers when in reality 99 percent of the time it's the seller who is getting scammed buy the buyer on ebay not the other way around
This is true. I refurbish ps4s on Ebay. I put a few hours into each of my consoles. I will sell ps4 slim 1TB for $185 with 60 day warranty and it will sit for for 2 weeks sometimes. I always read comments about people buying that same console for $220 only for it be dirty. I don't have the big name so that is how it goes lol.
4:48 They gave him the rare Hitachi drive! It's very reliable for reading discs and supposedly quick at reading them too.
Yeah I need to find one of those. Mine has a Philips :/
And for his rubber band talk around that time stamp, mine was worn down so I bought some small hair rubber bands from Walmart and it works perfectly lol
Interesting 🤨
@@Felixbucket I've got a Philips and a Samsung. My Samsung doesn't close sometimes and I have to slightly lift the disc tray a bit and then it closes.
I wonder what disc drive mine had I just remember the disc tray getting stuck..def Jam fight for NY lost forever 😭
@Jacob R if I remember correctly, it was easy to dump the Hitachi firmware, modify it, and write it to a similar model meant for PC. That's how games were ripped before the first Xbox mods came out. It's been a couple decades though so I might be wrong.
I purchased my OG Xbox from Ebay for $180 that had the disc drive belt/mechanism replaced, thermal paste on both chips repasted and the capacitors replaced. I consider that refurbished and worth the price.
Around 200 bucks does seem to be a reasonable price for a actually refurbished Xbox, I'd buy that, everybody buy that.
Wow. I can only seem to get 100ish for em...
Where are all these people spending 180?
Another weird one from Lukie Games… they kind of refurbish, but just quit the job half way? Lol
This is assuming that Lukie games is the one that did the refurbishing in the first place (could have been someone else that did it years ago)
@@jrob0021 hey it’s better than dkoldies atleast lukie games actually opens the console
LMAO
That has a Hitachi disc drive which was exclusive to very late 2004 to some 2005 models. It is the best disc drive to have. That has definitely been replaced on your unit since yours was from 2002. Interesting replacement since the Hitachi of Xbox drives are super hard to find.
i love the OG xbox. its so easy to disassemble and refurbish
I recently bought a Wii bundle for my mom on eBay and I will say it was packaged FAR better than anything I've seen from DK or Lukie in these videos. I've actually never seen something packaged so well in my life.
I loved the WWE games on the XBox 360 because you could rip CDs to the 360 hard drive and use the songs as the entrance themes for wrestlers. I used it to give guys their updated themes when they changed them.
What I think happened with the dust is that the console was cleaned out when they received it and the clock cap was removed and it just sat on a shelf or in storage someplace and accumulated a tad bit over time.
The amount of dust in that system I'd say doesn't look bad at all compared to what you see from DKO.
Now the thermal paste not being replaced was an odd one, no excuse there, if you're going that far into refurbishment, then just replace the paste, takes only a few minutes to do
yeah my guess is that the clock capacitor replacement was done a long time ago (before lukie games got it). I gave them the benefit of the doubt though. I honestly don't think lukie games ever opened this console
@@jrob0021 That would be unfortunate. Hopefully its just one of those cases rather than something constant. I've had bad experiences with DKO in the past but Lukie has done right by me the few times ive used them. Dreamcast I got was fully cleaned with new thermals and every game ive bought was in good condition.
Would hate to see them just being another DKO
That can't be the case since there was caked on dust in the heatsink fan. It can't be in there like that unless someone had the system on over several days.
I personally think the factory pink thermal pad is timeless, the heatsinks are always sealed extremely well as you can see when trying to remove the heatsink.
I wish they still used the same stuff on newer consoles
At least Lukie Games said that it's shipped with a 3rd party controller unlike DKOldies
Lukie Games is like gambling if the console is refurbished, but it's like 70% not refurbished 30% refurbished.
Beats dkoldies
Nice video and great job on it too! I'm actually trying to get another OG Xbox console again myself because the one I had connected to my TV won't power on now since the clock capacitor in the console possibly went up and is preventing the system from powering on. I've had that Xbox though for a few years since it worked very well for me and the last time I remember using it was sometime late last year, like back in November or December sometime before the holidays since I still remember my Xbox still working back then although it doesn't seem to work now, unfortunately, which sucks. The Xbox that I was also using was one that I've ordered from Amazon apparently since I got mine from Amazon. I didn't get it from GameStop or DKOldies or anywhere else. I do have an Xbox 360 which still works fine so far and my Xbox 360 is backwards compatible with most of my original Xbox games that I have, but there are a few OG Xbox games that I have that won't work on the 360 since I still need an OG Xbox to play those certain games apparently.
Man this makes me feel good about buying a refurbished original Xbox for 120 a couple weeks ago. I would have bought one from eBay and refurbed it myself but I was in a time crunch (impatient) and didn’t want to wait. Went to vintage stock and they fully cleaned the system and it looked brand new inside, removed the clock capacitor also removed all the residue and put in new thermal paste. And it came with 3 games (2 of which I sank tons of hours in when I was a kid) and an OEM controller
5:29 oh boy... nascar games were my childhood! I still play them on my ps2 today! I even have nascar 2005
About the clock situation on the Xbox, the clock cap is designed to store the time for a few hours if power is lost, not just turning off the console but still having it connected to power. Also, there are a few different revisions of the motherboards, which can have the caps in different locations. Later boards, like 1.6, have the clock cap located by the IDE port that the DVD drive connects to for example
Note: Another good thing about the OG Xbox, is you didn't need a network connection for the majority of the games. Possibly the worst feature of future generations of consoles, is that you would have to wait for them to install to the HDD/SSD, THEN wait longer for the console to download all the relevant patches for said games. You think a 10-30 second "loading" screen was bad? Try 15-30 minutes just to start playing.
I probably wouldn't just straight-up remove the clock capacitor, I would replace it. Having to put in the time each time you boot doesn't sound like a super big deal, but it gets pretty annoying pretty fast
Xbox without a clock cap won't actually lose the time unless you unplug it, so if you leave it connected to power you should be good.
I dont remember there eing a second fan on the og xbox was it something they added with the original and removed with the newer or vice versa?
Is that fan on the GPU heatsink a stock feature? I've never seen an Xbox with a fan anywhere besides the rear.
When I snagged that OG Xbox at the Goodwill Outlet for $5, the cashier held the line up saying she might not be able to sell me the unit due to stored consumer data, and I explained straight up that "Uh, this is an almost 20 year old console, I'm sure by now that the original user's data is out of date and unusable." at this point, the line was almost 15 buyers deep, even one complaining, "Oh let the guy have his console.". Glad they did, because yep, manager said the same and I walked out with a perfect working console (well, I did have to remove the clock cap, but otherwise it worked fine once an AV cable was connected).
Finding that near new condition Duke controller though, for $8, was the best though. I dunno why everyone hates it, tiny hands maybe? It's roughly the same size as a DC controller, and those worked great as well.
I need to get my X Box out, I haven't connected and played it for about 18 months. I never set the time as in the past I disconnect it. I consider still near mint as it is protected whilst in storage. It still has a scart connection so need to try a HDMI converter.
Jacob r I had bought a xbox 360 s from ebay saying it was tested but whenever I turn it on using hdmi it says not compatible with this signal. If you know what's wrong please tell me.
with all the repairing i do of guitar effects pedals i think some of those solders on the caps which i though looked new, looked like new solder. i think they did a cap job and skipped the thermal.
I have an Xbox that I never opened but plan to. Would the thermal paste coming off be an issue is the system was never used or seen daylight?
I've had bad experiences from them. 4 out of 5 games I purchased didn't have their instruction manual but listed as complete.
8:40 I may know why that is. I have an original Xbox that has a manufacture date of April 3
2002 mine still has the original Thomson disc drive in it. The Thomson drives were known to fail. It's most likely given how close the manufacturer date is. I would say the one you purchased originally came with a Thomson disc drive.
Hey I have been watching your videos for a while now. Just curios what do you do with all your consoles you have?
The OGxbox disc drives are a nightmare to get working and a third party replacement doesn't exist yet but I hope a shop like stoneagegamer or just anybody can make reproduction drives for it. Every Xbox I've got which is about 7 only 1 had a working disc drive hahaha.
This refurbishment was probably done by a repair shop back in 2011 and sold to Lukie Games a decade later. That explains the paste application (looking like 12 years old and not 22) and replaced clock cap. Credit for them finding good stock, but no guarantees this was all done by them.
What 'cleaning solution' do you recommend that does not make smudges on consoles?
Pretty much anything except whatever this company is using lol. Never seen anything leave this kind of residue on a console.
@@jrob0021 I think any cleaning solution would do that.
I love my og xbox, I still have mine as a child, we burned all my dads music and would play Tony Hawks Underground 2 and listen to the music on that game! I also just bought a xbox halo special edition I refurb. and that also had a bunch of burns songs and save data. I dont delete because the history of it is so cool!
i build guitar effects amp amplifiers I use capacitors like the clock capacitor. it looks like they did an entire cap job all the electrolytic capacitors looked newer than the other components
I'm nervous to open my OG Xbox and check things out is there any suggestions to updating it, without tearing it up? I've had it since I was 14 years old, in 04.
Ooo, a 1.0 model thats one of the more sought after models, the 1.0 and 1.1 have a 1mb tsop chip that can be reflashed by bringing some points on the main board, 1.2-1.4 have a 256kb tsop
I have a bunch of nascar games . The papyrus ones on pc and ps1, nascar heat 02, thunder 2002-5 on xbox. Nascar 2011, inside line. 14, 15 on 360 heat evolution- ignition on onex/ sx. Very nice change of pace from forza and gran turismo
The "cleaning solution" they use that leaves the residue is Fabuloso.. its a dollar store brand and has been recalled.
6:25 Danny when you say "burn CDs" do you mean "rip CDs"??
that greasy stuff on the console is probably an automotive product like Mothers Back to Black. (which is made for cars with faded plastic). it is a old trick to make scratched /faded consoles look better.
Are you in kansas city too? I noticed your joe's barbecue shirt.
Nah, I’ve just been there before
is there an issue with the video at 6:48?
With certain fake controllers you can do a shell and button swap and make it look OEM. My nephew had a fake Xbox 360 controller and I turned it into what looked like an OEM controller using my broken OEM controller. You might be able to make that fake DualSense controller made for PS4 look like the real thing using OEM DualSense parts.
Early 2000s gaming was a blast, so much nostalgia.
There was definitley something on that disc tray when you first opened it up, looks like a crumb of some sort
I actually knew about the burning CDs to your original Xbox feature thanks to San Andreas. I had some old Jesse McCartney CD's lying around and you can even name the custom radio stations.
...Take a wild guess what someone with my avatar would name a custom station involving Jesse McCartney. Bit of a hint: It involves the name Sora.
The cleaner they could be using is tire shine it’s meant to make plastic look shiny and less scratchy but that cleaner is really meant for a car but if it’s on plastic it doesn’t feel clean it feels dirty and waxy
the old clock cap definitely leaked and they did not clean up the leakage. you can see the residue and corrosion still there
I still have my modded xbox it has the n65,nes and snes games downloaded onto it. My favorite game was cs:go and playing my eminem recovery album in game.
Love the little editor's note in the video. Always good to know that kind of stuff
i still have my jail broken xbox. it is a newer one that doesn't need the cap removed. i loaded it up with emulators, and games, but they are hit and miss with controls working. i butchered the av cable to get the hd component output that makes a big difference
I love that meme that’s on the pc in the background 😂
I still have my original Xbox from when I was in the eighth grade lol. Still works like the first day. Cut a lot of yards that summer to save up for release day.
Remember to cut the clock capacitor before it explodes.
Probably this was refurbished in 2011. The problem is that it's 12 years ago and they should have cleaned it again.
I will give them the controller just because OG XBOX & XBOX 360 are hard controllers to find that’s OEM. I’m always looking in town at my local gaming stores, I’ve even driven hours away to other places and it’s RARE to find them. So up charging that makes sense.
If I wanted to get my PS3 fixed and get thermal paste where would I send it?
Have you ever seen one of these companies ever replace thermal paste? I haven’t
I have that same version o g microsoft xbox mine has a philips dvd drive i removed the clock capacitor i cleaned fixed inspected refurbished repaired restored reapplied new thermal paste on the central processing unit and graphics processing unit most importantly clean the motherboard dvd tray gears belt and controller ports
Loved playing death metal on the San Andreas station via my library.
I recently ordered Mario 3d land for my 2ds xl it arrived damaged. The main thing I like about them though is there nice customer service.
I used to play need for speed hot pursuit 2 on my Xbox with my custom soundtrack back in the day.
NASCAR Thunder 2003 I sunk hours into. It was amazing for a game from 2002, soundtrack was great
You got the best disk drive I got one for mine when the thomson failed, extremely fast read speeds
Try mentioning how much did it take for the parcel to arrive to you.
The 2004 has a new hitachi disc drive new clock cap laser cleaned thermal paste added works great
From what I can see with lukie games and DKoldies, they seem to think refurbished is just a little bit of a wipe over 😂.
Nascar heat baby! My dad and I would just drive backwards and the crashes were awesome. 02 03 maybe?
hard drive might be replaced as well
I have x3 OG Xbox from 2002 and they all have Western Digital HDDs
6:23 yes indeed it was the best feature in the OG xbox !
That pink thermal paste requires some elbow grease to remove lol
The physics, legit the reason those games were so good is because for the time the physics engine in those games were state of the art
Pretty sure the cleaning solution they use on the outside is armorall for cars... wouldnt be supprised
dude i bet they used Lysol wipes. I used to try to clean stuff with those but they always leave a gross feeling residue or film over everything
Yours was manufactured April 10, 2002?
I have one from April 15, 2002
So they were probably in the same factory
idk i just found that cool
I think you need to make a tutorial video on how to refurbish a console for these companies 😂😂
I literally found a working one at goodwill yesterday lol
Just waiting for someone to say “ hey that’s my old Xbox😮” 😂😂
Lukie's games seems a little bit better than Dkoldies. But these two big corporation gaming companies need to be taking some notes. Like they should clean out the consoles and put new thermal paste.
Honestly, if I lived in the US, I would try out at least 5 times to buy one hardware from a store that sells good ol' consoles, it can give a better overall image of "Is this company trusty or not to purchase old consoles from?", and if 80% or more of the hardware you buy from one of them refurbishing stores, is actually fully cleaned/repaired, then I'd say it's a good choice of a store, and 20% or less left could be just the mistakes they may have happen. I'm British and I know none of the stuff the 'muricans know.
I agree. That generation of EA NASCAR games was epic!
At 5:35 You're right about that I always loved order racing games they were just funner and every way 🤣
I normally just buy from ebay but I got a ps4 pro from gamestop for 280 and I think it's fine haven't cracked it open but it works
What would you recommend buying retro consoles from?
I remember playing Madden to my music on the OG Xbox. It's a fond gaming memory of mine. I played madden a year or two ago and I swear its the worst choice of music I've ever heard. It's all rap I've never heard before. I just want my late 90s and early 2000s rock/alternative playing while I'm checking my stats.
I thought you said that this video was coming out on Friday.
Good stuff man 😊😊
That packing material was totally fine, stop complaining (could have maybe used another sheet of bubble or the air packs tbh but not horrible). And no I'm not defending Lukie Games.
Edit: Yo, the console was originally "refurbed" on my birthday, kinda cool.
Nascar games... the only one I played was like Nascar 96 I think for PS1. All I did was hunt Jeff Gordon and smash into him.
And yes, copying CDs to the hdd was awesome. I still have my original with uh, a lot of throwbacks to 03-05 on there. I remember playing I think Forza somewhat recently and thinking "no way they included these songs on the soundtrack" and then realizing "oh, that's the music I put on the hdd". Good times.
If you feel greasy after wiping with your finger, it is likely that the equipment has been sprayed with IPA but not wiped.
Those lips in the xbox is Jacob's new look lol
That's gotta be Armor All on the outside
Cia guy: So what's the next step of your master plan?
Jacob: Crashing this plane, with no issues!
OG Xbox does not use a thermal paste, so common wisdom does not apply here. it uses a PCM (phase change material) pad which is dry when cold and soft when warmed up. The color is either pink (like what you got) or black. It does not need to be changed since it is not a paste and does not have the short service interval of a paste. It can last for many decades. Putting in thermal paste will not improve cooling performance (that has been proven by modders), but will have a shorter service life in the long term. When you get an OG Xbox it is really easy to tell if the material is doing its job - touch the heat sink (carefully) after a bit of use. It'll be nice and warm. Btw it's worth mentioning that PCM pads are getting popular again these days.
Otherwise they have done a mediocre job at best refurbishing the console. They haven't removed the contamination in the clock cap corner (which is why it is so dirty - dirt sticks to that like it's glue) and that CPU fan is just dreadful. Also Xbox DVD drives have trouble opening not because the belts get "dirty", but because they get dry and lose their elasticity (especially on Samsung drives). Not opening the drive to replace the belt and clean/lubricate everything is bad. Overall I'd give them 5/10
gta custom radio station was the best
Considering that i just bought one for 50 bucks, with 2 controllers, all three lord of the rings games, and after opening it up and finding it clean.... dang
Lol no
to "burn" a CD is to physically write data onto it.
The xbox can read and store CDDA from a disc and play it ingame
🤓

If you dont sell that Xbox, I recommend replacing the OG hard drive with a 2tb one and modding the Xbox (chip or TSOP) it and using it with insignia (OG Xbox live replacement).
no point doing 2tb drives anymore then cerbios is a thing
That thermal paste is basically bubble gum lol.
Pro tip, blast the heating with a hair dryer to get the paste to come off, then wipe with a dry paper towel or cloth. Once there's only a thin film left you can use IPA and a microfiber cloth
Cool tip, I'll try it next time I need to deal with that stuff. The way I've always removed it was using acetone (lol) and it's worked but it's kind of a pain because you have to be careful not to get it anywhere other than the chip itself and the bottom of the heatsink.
Use a coffeemaker filter instead of a paper towel. It will not leave any paper particles residue. This is also great when replacing thermal paste on a computer CPU.
Yes I had a PS2 also and then one day I went over to a friend's house and he had the Xbox and it mediately abandon PlayStation on the spot because that's how great the Xbox was at the time and I've been with Xbox ever since
At this point people are better off looking for gaming stuff at thrift stores and eBay, I found a fantastic condition Xbox 360 Edition Minecraft at a Goodwill the other day, so its much better just doing it this way
